James VanVactor
KNOX — James C. VanVactor, 67, of 3735 South 150 East, Knox, passed away at 1: 57 a.m. on
Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.
Jim was born on July 8, 1940, in Lima, Ohio, to Joseph and Anna (Wagner) VanVactor. Jim
VanVactor and Deloris Little were united in marriage on Oct. 5, 1958 in Plymouth. This October,
they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
Jim joined the United States Air Force in 1958 and served for 22 years as a special agent for
“OSI.” He retired from the Air Force in 1979. Jim and Deloris then moved back to the Plymouth
area. He was the Town Marshal of Walkerton, before taking a position, as a deputy, with the
Starke County Sherriff’s Department. He retired from the Sherriff’s Department after 18 years of
service. Jim and Deloris raised buffalo on their farm. He was known as the "Buffalo Man" in the Knox area.
Jim was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of Donaldson, the Masonic Lodge of
Knox, the Hamlet American Legion Post of Hamlet, and had been serving on the Starke County Council.
Jim is survived by his wife, Deloris; their sons: Jeffrey and Jackie VanVactor of Bison, S.D.,
Terry L. VanVactor of Knox; their daughter, Judy Nowak of South Bend; his brother, Jon and
Ruth VanVactor of Plymouth; his sister, Joanne VanVactor of Indianapolis; his father, Joseph
(Joe) and Mardelle VanVactor of Plymouth; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by his mother, Anna, and his brother, Bill.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2008, at 10 a.m., at Van Gilder Funeral Home in
Plymouth, with the Rev. Edward Hasnerl officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery,
Plymouth. Military Graveside Honors will be presented by the American Legion Post of North Judson.
A time of visiting with Jim’s family and friends, will be Friday, June 27, 2008, from 3 to 7 p.m. at
the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth.
The family would like for memorial contributions to be given to the Evangelical Covenant Church,
Post Office Box 67, Donaldson, IN 46513.

Steven C. “Burger Boy” Scott
INDIANAPOLIS — Steven C. “Burger Boy” Scott, 46, of Indianapolis, passed away June 25, 2008. He was born June 19, 1962 to Howard and Jane Scott of Dayton, Ohio.
Steve attended Ball State University, and was self-employed. He was in charge of the Calendar Club franchises throughout the city in all major malls. His passion was music, where he was involved with the Blues Society in both South Bend and Indianapolis.
Visitation will be Saturday, July 5, 2008 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel, 9900 Allisonville Rd. Funeral services will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Survivors include his brother, Tom Scott; sister Janet Miller; former wife and friend, Kim Scott;
stepsister, Nancy Granberg, stepbrothers, Steve and Ron Granberg; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepmother, Louis Granberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.

Lori Ann Tomblin
PLYMOUTH – Lori Ann Tomblin, 43, died following an auto accident at 6: 04 a.m. Wednesday June 25, 2008.
Lori was born Nov. 11, 1964, in Illinois to Ann (Oliver) Meeks.
April 28, 1980 Lori and Michael M. Tomblin were married in West Virginia.
Lori was a caregiver; she enjoyed the outdoors, horse back riding, muscle cars, roses, cooking and her family. She was a mother to all the neighborhood kids. Lori had a great love for animals, especially horses.
She is survived by her husband, Michael; a son, Michael A. Tomblin (Corrie Wootan) and their children: Zachary, Alexis, and Kiley, all of Plymouth; a daughter, Goldie A.M. Tomblin (Jeffrey Bucher Jr.) of Walkerton; two brothers: Charles Meeks of Burr Oak, and Bob Meeks of West Virginia; a sister, Lonnie Skeens of West Virginia survives as well.
Proceeding in death was Lori’s mother.
Friends are invited to join the family in remembering Lori’s life on Saturday, June 28, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St. Plymouth. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 29 in the funeral home with the Rev. Steve Voelker of the United Church of Christ, Plymouth, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Tyner cemetery, Tyner.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Riley Newton
NORTH JUDSON — Riley Newton, 58, of North Judson, died Thursday, June 26, 2008.
Survivors include his mother, Elsie Newton of North Judson; a brother, Tommy Newton of North Judson and a daughter, Wannetta Newton.
Visitation is today, June 30 at 10 a.m. at Braman & Son Funeral Chapel, Knox. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral chapel with burial to follow at Oak Park cemetery.

Veneda M. Palmer
PLYMOUTH — Veneda M. Palmer, age 73, of 12589 Rose Road, Plymouth, passed away at 2: 20 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, 2008, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Veneda was born Aug. 15, 1934, in Plymouth, to Arthur and Pearl (Bradley) McQuisten. On Aug. 24, 1952, Veneda and Robert J. Palmer were married .
Together they ran their family business, Peaceful Meadows Campground in Plymouth. Veneda was the secretary for the Campground. She was also the secretary for their other business, Bob’s Electric, but her greatest joy was being a wife and mother.
Veneda is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Robert J. Palmer; their daughter, Linda S. Palmer, of Plymouth; their son, Robert M., Jr. (Valora) Palmer of Culver; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her sisters: Mable (Bud) Griggs of Mishawaka and Margaret Sherwood of Plymouth and her brother, Russell McQuisten of Plymouth.
A time of visiting with the Palmer family will be Tuesday, July 1, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 West Madison Street Plymouth, IN, 46563.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, Plymouth, with the Rev. James Irwin officiating. Burial will be in Maxinkuckee IOOF cemetery, Culver.

Redetha "Pat" Chodzinski
PLYMOUTH — Redetha “Pat” Chodzinski, 69, passed away in her home on Friday, June 27, 2008.
Pat was born Feb. 5, 1939 in Arkansas to the late Allen and Elsie Coffman. In June of 1965, in South Bend, she married Richard Chodzinski, who preceded her in death Aug. 15, 1993.
Surviving Pat are her son, Kevin (Tracy) Chodzinski of Osceola, grandchildren Tori and Chloe Chodzinski and many brothers and sisters.
Pat worked as a nurse, retiring in 1982. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, raising plants, watching birds and watching golf.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824, S. Mayflower Rd. South Bend. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at the St. Joseph cemetery, South Bend.

Thelma M. Ronk
PLYMOUTH — Thelma M. Ronk, 92, died at 4: 45 p.m. Friday, June 27, 2008 at Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth, Ind. Born in Carrol County, Ind. on Nov. 27, 1915, Thelma was the daughter of Walter R. and Emma Arion Edgerley.
A Plymouth resident since 1939, Thelma had attended schools in Carrol County. On Dec. 22, 1934, Thelma and Forest C. Ronk were married in Knox. Forest died Jan. 10, 1998.
Thelma was a homemaker and had worked as a waitress and as an escort for Mobile Homes.
She was especially fond of spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Thelma is survived by three daughters: Shirley (Ed) Rusher, Patsy (John) Kuhn of Plymouth and Peggy (Mike) Perdue of Rochester; a son, Bill (Karen) Ronk of Plymouth; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Gary Lawmaster and a great-grandson, Dustin Ronk.
Friends are invited to celebrate Thelma’s life today, June 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 7 a.m. Tuesday in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Charles Krieg will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions in Thelma’s memory may be made to the Dustin Ronk Memorial Fund or the Alzheimer’s Unit of Miller’s Merry Manor, Plymouth or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Martha M. Hoge Swihart
PLYMOUTH — Martha M. Hoge Swihart, 100, of 635 Oak Hill Ave., Plymouth, formerly of Argos, passed away at 2: 50 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2008, at Miller's Merry Manor in Plymouth, where she had been a resident since 1988.
Martha was born on Dec. 30, 1907, in Auglaize County, Ohio, to Lewis H. and Elizabeth (Settlage) Hoge. A graduate of Argos High School and Manchester College, she was a teacher at Talma, Ind. and Gas City, Ind. Martha was an active member of the former Argos Progress Club. On July 3, 1945, in Rochester, she married Sam R. Swihart, who preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1979. In December of 2007 she observed her 100th birthday.
Martha is survived by her daughters: Sally and Larry McKee of Plymouth, Suzanne and Clarence Draper of Georgetown, Texas, and Mary Lunde of DeMotte; her grandchildren: David Wheeler of Albuquerque, N.M., Mary Wheeler of Indianapolis, Linda Draper of Georgetown, Texas, Gordon Draper of Bryan, Texas, and Douglas McKee of Bangkok, Thailand; her great-granddaughter, Jenna McKee of Bangkok, Thailand; her sister-in-law, Mildred Hoge of Avon; and several nieces and nephews. Martha was preceded in death by an infant sister, Mary Hoge; a sister, Rachel Hoge Zumpfe, and her brothers: Howard, Harold, and Paul Hoge.
The VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, is handling the arrangements. Graveside services will be held Monday, July 7, 2008, at 11 a.m., in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth, with the Rev. Henry Sprunger officiating.

Wayne H. Smith
NORTH LIBERTY — Wayne H. Smith Jr., 60, of North Liberty, Ind. died Saturday June 28, 2008 in Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his wife Sherry (Green). Also surviving are his mother Margaret Rose Smith of North Liberty; two daughters: Tracy (Rich) Hamm of Plymouth and Wendy (Wayne) Flora of Walkerton; three sons: Howard and Timothy Smith of Texas and Larry Smith of Knox; 12 grandchildren; two sisters: Gloria Capri of Maryland and Sherri (Bud) Brown of Knoxville, Tenn. and a brother, Dale (Cathy) Smith of Plymouth.
He was preceded in death by his father in 2006 and a brother John Smith in 2002.
Visitation is today, June 30 at Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main St., North Liberty, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. where a Masonic service will be held Monday evening.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery.

Loretta A. West
PLYMOUTH — Loretta A. West, 63, of 305 S. Plum St., Plymouth, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008, at 8: 53 a.m. at her home.
She was born on Nov. 6, 1944, in Plymouth to Eugene and Geraldine (Frohning) Keller. She was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Loretta is survived by her mother, Geraldine Keller of Plymouth; her daughter, Tina and Jose Fernandez of Plymouth; her sons: John Hatfield, Ed Hatfield, Rick and Becky Hatfield, and Bill Hatfield all of Plymouth; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; her sisters: Rose and Don Campbell of Fort Wayne, Karen and Larry Pontius of Plymouth, Linda and Chris Knill of Plymouth; her brothers: Donald and Kathie Keller of Florida, Phillip and Linda Keller of Plymouth, John and Lydia Keller of Plymouth, Eugene and Cindy Keller of Argos, Kenneth and Terri Keller of Plymouth, Alan and Lorra Keller of Plymouth, and Kevin and Bridget Keller of Plymouth. She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Keller and her brothers, James Keller and Patrick Keller.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 3, 2008, at 10: 30 a.m., at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, with the Rev. Father William Kummer officiating. Burial will be in Saint Michael cemetery, Plymouth.
A time of visiting and sharing with the family will be on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth.

Ryan Scott Holloway
ROCHESTER — Ryan Scott Holloway, 20, of Rochester, died at 12: 30 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2008 as the result of an automobile accident.
He is survived by a son, Cayden; his mother, Kari (Jim) Felda of Kewanna; his father, Greg (Alice) Holloway of Grovetown, Ga.; sisters: Tiffany Felda and Amber Felda; and brothers: Calvin Holloway, Wil Holloway, Jake Felda and David Felda.
Visitation is Wednesday, July 2 from 4 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester. Funeral services are Thursday, July 3 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be at the Rochester IOOF cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Ryan Scott Holloway Fund.

Francis “Fran” Eugene Maze
PLYMOUTH — Francis “Fran” Eugene Maze, 64, of Thayer Street, Plymouth passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008 in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth Campus of natural causes.
He was born Sept. 30, 1943 in Plymouth to Charles W. Maze and Ruby Scott. Fran graduated with the Plymouth High School class of 1961.
Fran served three years in the United States Army. After an honorable discharge he worked for Sprint recently known as Embarq, where he retired in 2005 after 30 years of employment.
He is survived by his mother, Ruby E. Werner and Frederick L. Werner his stepfather of Fruitland Park, Fla.; one sister, Mardene Reid of Summerfield, Fla.; four brothers: James L. (Arlene) Maze of Ocala, Fla., Richard (Sue) Maze of Plymouth and Ronald E. Maze of Koontz Lake.
Also surviving are two step-brothers: Stephen Werner of Pittsburg, Pa., Jon (Mary) Werner of Leesburg, Fla.; and one step-sister, Lora Lee Rike of Ocala, Fla. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Two brothers preceded him in death: Charles Monroe Maze and Gerald W. Maze; and his father, Charles Maze Sr.
Friends will be welcomed by the family for a time of celebration and reflection on Wednesday July 2, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. and after 7 a.m. on Thursday July 3, 2008 in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Fran will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday July 3, 2008 in the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, with the Fr. Bill Kummer officiating.
Burial will take place in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Norma Jean Metheny
Mrs. Norma Jean Metheny peacefully entered into her eternal rest on Sunday, June 29 at 7: 30 p.m. in her home with her family at her side. She had been in failing health the past few years.
She was born the daughter of Howard Hudson and Olive Linn Hudson on June 1, 1926 at Laud, Ind. She was a resident of the area for most of her life. She had been a bookkeeper for Mentone Co-op and in her later years was bookkeeper for Metheny Elevator of Bourbon. She was also a graduate of Mentone High School and a faithful member of the Bremen Missionary Church.
Norma Jean was joined in marriage to Carl Metheny on Dec. 9, 1951. He survives along with their two children: Diane Horn Metheny and David (Lori) Metheny all of Bourbon. She was further blessed with her two grandchildren: Taylor and Tarann Metheny also of Bourbon. She has a sister, Patricia Gross of Warsaw; her two brothers: Donald (Betty) Hudson of Etna Green and Dale (Barbara) Hudson of Warsaw; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Hudson of Claypool.
She was preceded in death by her two brothers; Richard and Kenneth.
A funeral service to celebrate Norma Jean’s life will be held Thursday, July 3 at 2 p.m. in Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St. Bourbon with Rev. Gary Hinkle officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until time of funeral services Thursday in the funeral home.
Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill cemetery at Bourbon.
The family requests any memorial contributions be made to Hospice or Bremen Missionary Church in her memory.

Theann “Annie” Ferrol Mollette
ROCHESTER — Theann “Annie” Ferrol Mollette, 40, of Rochester, died Sunday, June 29 at 12: 20 a.m. at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.
Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Noftsger of Rochester; her husband John, at home; a son, Ryan (Haley Dille) Weese of Rochester; a granddaughter, Emma Michelle Weese of Rochester; six sisters: Nancy (Leroy) Lyke of LaPaz, Sara (John) Oliver of Rochester, Teresa Maynard of Rochester, Roxie Noftsger of Rochester and Helen (Jerry) Weese of Rochester; a brother, Peter (Kathy) Noftsger of Pelastine, Ind. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, July 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester.
Funeral services will begin Tuesday at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Rochester IOOF Cemterey.

Bryant Matthew Scott
MACY — Bryant Matthew Scott, 18, of Macy, died at 12: 30 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2008 in Mentone as the result of an automobile accident.
He is survived by his mother, Janice (Brad) Norman of Macy; father, Dewayne Scott of Kokomo; brother, Dewayne Hecht of Macy; and grandparents, Charles and Rosie Scott of Kokomo.
Visitation is Monday, July 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester.
Funeral services are Tuesday, July 8 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Plainview cemetery, Macy.

Nancy Ann Fatchett
WINONA LAKE — Nancy Ann Fatchett, 51, of Winona Lake, died at 6: 10 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2008 at Kosciusko Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 27, 1956 in Warsaw to Robert and Doris (Kincaide) Kesler.
She graduated from Warsaw High School, Class of 1975 and Ball State University, Class of 1980. A lifetime resident of Warsaw, she married Robert Fatchett on Dec. 5, 1997 in Warsaw.
She was a member of Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church and Tri Kappa Sorority. Nancy loved and was loved by everyone. She loved animals and was a supporter of the Animal Welfare League. She was also an avid football fan.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Robert Fatchett of Winona Lake; daughter, Kirsten Fatchett of Winona Lake; son, Cole Fatchett of Winona Lake; mother, Doris Kesler of Warsaw; sister, Susan (James) Wagner of Plymouth; brother, Steve (Kim) Kesler of Warsaw; and father and mother-in-law; Wayne and Shirley Fatchett of Moline, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Services will be held at Warsaw Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Warsaw, on Thursday, July 3 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Bill Burd and Rev. Ron Horgan officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2 at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw.
Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery, Warsaw.
McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, is in charge of arrangements.

Loretta S. “Shorty” Land Vigar
TIPPECANOE — Loretta S. “Shorty” Land Vigar of 3259 18B Road in Tippecanoe peacefully entered into her eternal rest on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at 2: 29 p.m. in Memorial Hospital of South Bend. She had been in failing health.
She was born the daughter of Joseph Land and Beulah Boone Land on Aug. 16, 1935 at Indianapolis. She was a homemaker and she loved to work crossword puzzles, do knitting, play Yahtzee and Rummy. She loved anything involving contesting. She was also very active in the Silver Dollars Saddle Club when it was active. She was a faithful member of the Full Gospel House of Prayer in Tippecanoe.
Shorty was joined in marriage to Harleyglen Vigar on Aug. 16, 1969. He survives along with their seven children: Maria & husband Wilbur Yoder of Topeka, LuAnn & husband Melvin Davis of Carrollton, Ky., Terie Ramirez & friend Mike Lackovic of Warsaw, Angie Chapman of Stuttgart, Ark., Susan & husband Larry Ingram of Taylor, S.C., Tina Orman of San Diego, Calif. and her son, Glen & wife Kim Vigar of Logansport. She was further blessed 23 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents a sister, Louise Thompson and two grandchildren.
A funeral service to celebrate Loretta’s life will be held Saturday, July 5 at 11: 30 a.m. in DeatonPage
Clemens Funeral Home, 115 S. Main St. Bourbon with Pastor Don Chadwick officiating.
The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until time of funeral services Saturday in the funeral home.
Burial will follow in Tippecanoe cemetery at Tippecanoe.

Agnes Eileen Haser Biank
GRANITE FALLS, N.C. — Mrs. Agnes Eileen Haser Biank, 79, of Granite Creek, N.C., passed away Friday, July 4, 2008 at Camelot Manor Nursing Care Facility.
She was born Aug. 5, 1928 in Elk County, Pa. to the late Edward Haser and Suzanne Mullen Haser. Mrs. Biank was a homemaker and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Biank and her sister, Julia Evers.
She is survived by two daughters: Karen Louise Plyler of Elkhart and Donna Frushour and husband Mark of Granite Falls; her son, Robert Edward Biank and wife Shirley of Ridgway, Pa.; four grandchildren: Anthony, Trevor, and Thomas Frushour and Brian Plyler; and her sister, Phyllis Kerr of Johnsonburg, Pa.
Funeral Mass for Mrs. Biank will be held at The Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Johnsonburg, Pa. Friday, July 11 at 10 a.m. with visitation preceding the service with Father Wilson officiating.
Mackie-High Funeral Home is serving the Biank family.
