Tad J. Van Der Weele, 55, beloved son and brother, and accomplished artist, passed away
surrounded by his loving family, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M. on Nov. 13, 2008
after a courageous battle with cancer.
Tad was born in Rochester on Sept. 13, 1953 and grew up on the family farm in Argos. He was
an Eagle Scout and attended the National Jamboree in Idaho in 1969. Tad was a 1971 graduate
of Argos High School, received a B.A. from Indiana University's School of Arts & Sciences,
graduating with honors, and received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of
Washington, Seattle. Tad worked 24 years as a social worker for the University of Washington
Hospital before retiring in 1999. Tad also developed software for social work departments and
continued to use his computer expertise with doctor’ s offices, clinics, and organizations.
A simpler life, blue skies, and a vibrant, supportive arts community are what drew Tad to move
to Silver City, N.M. in 1999. He loved Silver City and took great pride in his clay
and painting studio, weelearts, where he was able to work full-time and create his sculptural
ceramic pieces, abstract paintings, and digital prints. Many of his pieces were inspired by his
love of the family farm and woods.
Tad was a computer whiz, great cook, voracious reader and poet, and he distinguished himself
as a member of the Silver City Arts Community. He was honored this year when his three-piece
ceramic work titled, “The Mutability Compass”, was selected by the New Mexico Capitol Arts
Commission to be placed in the permanent art collection of the State of New Mexico. It currently
hangs in Santa Fe at the State Capitol Annex building. He also received an award for the Best
Sculpture in the 2007 Mimbres Region Arts Council’s, “Weekend at the Galleries” exhibit. That
same year, he won Best 2-D Award in the Human Figure Exhibition in the Western New Mexico
University’s McCray Gallery.

Airedale Terriers: Max, Maggie, & Boomer, Tad is survived by his parents, Lynn and Virginia Van
Der Weele of Argos; sisters: Teri (Kent) Bair of Argos and Tami (Art) Brock of Noblesville; and
brothers: Jack (Lori) Van Der Weele and Jon (Patti) Van Der Weele also of Argos; 13 nieces
and nephews; an aunt, Ann Lemon of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and an uncle, George (Margie)
Schlosser of Argos.
Tad followed the beliefs of the Tibetan Buddhism in his life and in his art. He often practiced at
the Iron Knot Ranch in southwestern New Mexico, a retreat center founded on the belief that the
true nature of all living things is inherently pure, wise, and compassionate.
A celebration of Tad’s life will be held Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 from 1 to 4 p.m. with a
celebration of memories starting at 3 p.m. at the Community Life Center, Argos United Methodist
