ROCHESTER — Ethel Marie Mathias, 91, of Rochester, died at 6: 15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23,
2008 at Life Care Center of Rochester.
She is survived by a son, James I. Mathias of Rochester; sisters: Hattie Baldwin, Agatha Marsh
and Thelma Frettinger, all of Rochester; and brothers: Charles Moon of Mishawaka, William
(Marilyn) Moon of Rochester and Donald (Ema) Moon of Florida.
Visitation is Friday, Nov. 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester.
Funeral services are Friday, Nov. 28 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at the
Rochester IOOF cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Church of God, and The Old
Cross Road Baptist Church of Gilead.

Myrtle VonCiele Toborg
PLYMOUTH — Myrtle VonCiele Toborg, 67, of Plymouth, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 at home.
She is survived by daughters: Janell Larew of Plymouth and Audra (Frank) Gaines of LaPaz;
son, John (Tina) Toborg of Madison, Wis.; brother, Robert Petit Jr. of Merrillville; and 11
grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, Plymouth, is in charge of the arrangements.

Sandra Jo Cook
PLYMOUTH — Sandra Jo Cook, 71, of 101 N. Liberty St., Plymouth, passed away Monday,
Nov. 24, 2008, at 6: 50 a.m. at Miller’s Merry Manor, in Plymouth, following a brief illness.
Sandra was born on Oct. 4, 1937, in Plymouth, to Merton and Jessie (Becker) Synder. Sandra
and Fred Cook were married on Oct. 9, 1955, in Plymouth. Fred passed away on Jan. 2, 2005.
Sandra worked in the S.P.D. Department at Saint Joseph Medical Center, in South Bend. She
was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross in Plymouth and in South Bend. During
those years she served in many capacities. She served for 31 years at the Notre Dame football
games, as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and her last assignment was in the Press
Box at the games. She was a member of the Michiana Nutones and the Plymouth Baptist
Church. Sandra was a 28-year cancer survivor.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Jo (Craig) Belting of Osceola; her sons: Fred “Dan”
(Lori) Cook of Jackson, Tenn. and Jim Cook of Plymouth; her mother, Jessie Snyder of Bremen;
her sister, Nancy (Darrell) Lee of Argos; her brothers: Stephen (Marge) Snyder of South Bend
and Stewart (Rose) Snyder of Plymouth; her sister-in-law, Bonnie Snyder of South Bend; five
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred
Cook; her father, Merton Snyder; and her brother, Bruce Snyder.
A time of visiting with the family will be Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the VAN
GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 W. Madison St., Plymouth, IN 46563.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at the VAN GILDER
FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Douglas Jividen officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill
cemetery, Plymouth.
Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross of Saint Joseph County or the American
Red Cross of Marshall County.

Mary Lou Truex
NAPPANEE — Mary Lou Truex, 79, of Nappanee died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 24 at 4: 30
p.m. at her home of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 19, 1929 in South Bend to Ruben Schmucker and Mary Rink and was a
lifetime Beech Road resident. She married Roy Truex Jr. Nov. 9, 1947. He preceded in death
July 3, 1986.
She was the owner of Schmucker LP Gas, which was started by her parents. They have been in
business more than 62 years, serving the greater Nappanee area, and it was said "business was
her life."
She is survived by a niece, Kelly Enkoff of Indianapolis, cousins: Pat (Rolland) Heckaman of
Nappanee, Nancy Hickey of South Bend, Cheryl (Wayne) Cline of Goshen and Denny (Brenda)
Heckaman of Goshen; business associates and close friends: Keith and Ronda Klotz of
Nappanee; and caretaker: Ursula (Mike) Luttman of Nappanee.
Visitation is Friday, Nov. 28 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral
Home in Nappanee. Funeral services are Saturday, Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be at South Union cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Camp Millhouse.

James L. Chaney
WALKERTON — James L. Chaney, 50, of Walkerton, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008 at his
home in Battle Creek, Mich.
He is survived by his mother Cristine (Miguel) Torres of Knox; wife, Judy Chaney of Battle
Creek, Mich, ; one son, Christopher Chaney of Walkerton; three daughters: Katrina (Billy) Miller,
Amanda Chaney and Rhonda (Edward) Chaney, all of Rochester.
Visitation took place Sunday, Nov. 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home and
funeral services took place Sunday at 4 p.m.

Henry C. “Khin”, Jr. Murray
PLYMOUTH — Henry C. “Khin” Murray, Jr., 42, of Plymouth, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008 at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.
Mr. Murray had lived in Plymouth since 1988, moving there from Texas. He was a former construction worker and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Plymouth.
Mr. Murray was born on July 23, 1966 in Freeport, Texas to Henry C. and Margaret (Jerrell) Murray Sr. On Dec. 8, 1990 in LaGrange, he married Maureen T. Mynhier. Mrs. Murray survives in Plymouth.
Also surviving is a daughter, Amanda E. Murray of Plymouth; his father and step-mother, Henry C. and Barbara Murray Sr. of Gilmer, Texas; his step-father, Joseph Collings of Bacliff, Texas; a sister, Caren Wise of Salem, N.C.; a brother, Donald Murray of Houston, Texas; a step-sister, Susan Huggins of Gilmer, Texas; and two step-brothers: Jason Collings of Minneapolis, Minn. and Robert Brem of Lake Jackson, Texas.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Margaret Collings in 2006, and a daughter, Leah K. Murray on July 31, 1992.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date, with private inurnment of the ashes in Greenwood cemetery, LaGrange.
Memorials may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Arrangements are being handled my Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange.

Betty M. Peranteau
Born in Mauston, WI on Aug. 25, 1934
Departed on Oct. 17, 2011 and resided in LaGrange, IN.

Betty M. Peranteau, 77, of LaGrange, IN died Monday, October 17, 2011 at her home.
Moving from California to LaGrange in February of 2001, she had been a cashier at Wal-Mart in Sturgis, MI from 2001 until 2009.
Mrs. Peranteau was a member of the Shipshewana Church of the Nazarene in Shipshewana, IN.
Mrs. Peranteau was born on August 25, 1934 in Mauston, WI to Arthur and Dolores (DeHane) Anderson. They both preceded her in death.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Thomas of Woodbury, MN and Debra Thomas of LaGrange, IN; a son, John Thomas of Long Beach, CA; three granddaughters, Christine Kron of Lewis Center, OH, Leslie Guriddi of Anaheim, CA, and Rene Hanrahan of Rosemont, MN; and six great-grandchildren.
She was looking forward to being re-united in Heaven with her son, Randy Thomas and her great-granddaughter, Amber Lynn.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at 3: 00 pm at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange, IN with Rev. Andy Dayton officiating.
Visitation will be from 1: 00 pm until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Punch Bowl cemetery in Hawaii.
Memorials may be made to the Shipshewana Nazarene Church.

Marcella M. Schmeltz
ARGOS — Marcella M. Schmeltz, 90, died at Willow Creek Assisted Living.
Marcella is survived by her sons: Dale (Joan) of Hillsdale, Mich. and Leroy (Diana) of Belleville,
Mich.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild and her brother, Raymond (Mary) McGriff of Argos.
Visitation was held at the David C. Brown Funeral Home in Belleville, Mich. Saturday Nov. 29, 2008 from 2 to 8 p.m.
Visitation will also be held at the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos, Ind. From 4 to 8 p.m. Monday Dec. 1, 2008.
Funeral services will be Tuesday Dec. 2, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to In-House Hospice Solutions.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos.

Victor Raymond Ivanuski
PLYMOUTH – Victor Raymond Ivanuski, 83, died of natural causes in the Catherine Kasper
Living Center, Donaldson at 3: 05 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008.
Born in Soland Springs, Wis. on May 23, 1925, Victor was the son of Stanley Ivanuski.
He graduated from Kelley High School in Chicago, in 1943. During World War II, he served in a
U.S. Construction Battalion in the United States Navy, commonly known as the “Seabees.” As a
Gunner’s Mate 2/C, Victor was an explosive expert and saw action in the re-invasion of the Phillipines.
In the spring of 1945, in Chicago, Victor and Alice Bishop Harper were married . Alice died on
Christmas Eve of 1993.
After his discharge, Victor used the GI Bill to attend Wilson Junior College in Chicago. In 1950,
during the Korean War, he was called back into service. Following his second service
discharge, he enrolled in the Illinois Institute of Technology.
He worked for the Institute’s not-for-profit research program. A chemical engineer, Victor solved
many problems for the military and the Atomic Energy Commission. He was also involved with
the Space Program and is credited for devising a fluffy paint that reflected heat. It is used on the
back-packs of the astronauts and on the moon-lander to help keep the temperatures from
getting too high.
A lot of his work was — and is—“top secret.”
Victor retired from the IITRI in 1983, but was frequently called back to Chicago to work on
various problems.
He and Alice, using a settlement from a train accident, bought a home and 20 acres in Polk
Township of Marshall County in the 1980s.
An excellent duplicate bridge player, he served as the director of both the Monday morning
duplicate games at the Moose Family Lodge and an evening bridge club that met at Miller’s
Merry Manor.
In addition to bridge, Victor enjoyed watching sports on TV and was an ardent Chicago Cub fan.
He is survived by a nephew, John Michial Hammitt, Seebright, N.J., and a niece-in-law, Lois A.
Hammitt, Chandler, Ark.
Two great-nieces, Christina Lynn Hammitt, Birmingham, Mich., and Debra Renee Hammitt,
Chandler, Ark., and a great-nephew, David Jeffrey Hammitt, also of Chandler, survive as well.
Victor was preceded in death by his wife, Alice, and a sister, Catherine Hammitt.
A graveside service will be held in the New Oakhill cemetery at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008.
The Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth, is in charge of
arrangements.

Dorothy F. Wedding
KOONTZ LAKE — Dorothy F. Wedding, 90, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at Koont.
She is survived by three daughters: Phyllis (Ron) Smith of Winter Haven, Fla., Joan (Roger)
Back and Donna (George) Martis, all of Walkerton, Ind.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren
and one sister, Marion Peters of DeMotte, Ind.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 from 3 to 8 p.m. CST and Thursday one
hour prior to the service.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Dec. 4 at 11 a.m. CT at Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel.
Burial will follow at the Grovertown cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111
Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.

Willard D., Sr. Williams
Willard D. ‘Will’ Williams Sr., 76, formerly of South Bend, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 in
Milwaukee, Wis.
He is survived by his wife, Leona "Lee"; children: Willard, Jr. (Jeanne), Teresa and James Sr.
(Ada); 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters: Betty Kaiser and Doris Sliter; and
brother, and Harold (Judy) Farver.
Services were held at the Krause Funeral Home, New Berlin, Wis. Monday, Dec. 1.

Herbert A. Keck
WALKERTON – Herbert A. Keck, 82, a lifetime resident of the Walkerton and Teegarden area,
died of natural causes at 7: 25 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, in the Saint Joseph Regional
Medical Center, Plymouth.
Herbert was born in Teegarden on Feb. 24, 1926. He was the son of James M. and Lydia E. (Matz) Keck.
He graduated from the Tyner High School with the Class of 1944.
Herbert served in the United States Armed Forces for three years in the European Theatre.
On Feb. 26, 1950, in Teegarden, Herbert and LaVerne C. Lemert were married .
He was an employee of the Bendix Corp. in South Bend for 45 years, retiring in 1989, as the
Chief Time Keeping superintendent.
Herbert loved to sing, read and do crossword puzzles. He enjoyed doing outdoor work around his home.
He is survived by LaVerne, his devoted wife of almost 59 years, and by their three sons. They
are: Lorie A. (Kathy) Keck, of Lost Creek, Ky., Robbie L. (Suzan) Keck, and Jamie R. Keck, all
of Walkerton.
A sister, Treva G. (Glenn) Rodgers of Nappanee and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
survive as well.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Harley J. Keck.
Friends are invited to visit with the family and celebrate the life of Herbert from 3 to 8 p.m. on
Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, and after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at the Johnson-Danielson
Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth and continue one hour prior to services in the church.
Funeral services for Herbert will be at 10: 30 on Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at the First
Brethren Church of Teegarden where he was a longtime member. His sons, the Rev. Rob Keck
and Lorie Keck will officiate.
Interment will be in the Morris cemetery, west of LaPaz on U.S. 6 where military honors will be
provided by members of the Plymouth American Legion Post 27.
Memorial gifts in Herbert’s name may be made to the First Brethren Church, Teegarden.

Phyllis Ruth (Shirar) Keller
BERNE — Phyllis Ruth (Shirar) Keller, 77, a resident of Swiss Village in Berne, died at 11: 30
p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008 at Adams Memorial Hospital. At her request, her body was
donated as an anatomical gift to Indiana University.
She was born on Dec. 5, 1930, in Plymouth to Alvy F. Shirar and Eva A. (Webster) Shirar. She
was a homemaker. While living in Berne she was an active member of the First Missionary
Church as long as her health permitted. She loved youth and was involved in helping with the
First Missionary Youth Quizzing program for several years.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Sue (Kenneth J.) Ruddy of Newnan, Ga.; one son,
Frederick P. (Diane) Keller of Guam; one granddaughter, Jennifer Lee Keller of Guam; a sisterin-law,
Peggy Shirar of Coupeville, Wash.; a niece, Kathy (Larry) Neiman of Coupeville,
Washington and a great-nephew, Zachary Neiman of Coupeville, Washington.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald J. Shirar.
She was faithful to her Savior, Jesus Christ and is now in His presence in Heaven. No funeral
Service will be held.
Memorials may be given to the Swiss Village Endowment Fund, Swiss Village, 1350 W. Main Street, Berne, IN 46711.
