Mildred L. Putman, 95, formerly of Silver Lake and Claypool, IN died at 7: 05 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2008 in Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw, IN. She was born November 10, 1912 in Silver Lake, IN to John & Olive (Huffman) Gall. She graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1930. On January 26, 1942 she married Arvid J. Putman. He died August 16, 1986. She was a member of the Laketon American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the former Faith United Methodist Church at Silver Lake and active in the women's organization. In later years she was a member of the Packerton United Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Eldon (Arvada) Spangle, Claypool, IN and Mrs. Wayne (Beverly) Delaney, North Salem, IN; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was an accountant at Celotex/BPB America, Lagro, IN 1996-2001, Kelly Box, Inc., Fort Wayne, IN 2001-2005, Vera Bradley, Fort Wayne, IN 2005-2007 and a Human Resources Accountant at Halderman Farm Management, Wabash, IN 2007-present. Lynn was owner/operator of L.T.S. Accounting, North Manchester, IN. She was a Laketon Lions Club exchange student to Japan during her junior year and graduated from Manchester High School in 1976 and Manchester College with a BA in Accounting. Lynn was a den mother for her son's Cub Scout group and a member of Business and Professional Women being local Chapter President, District Director of District 2, and Candidate for Treasury of State. Bonnie R. Dixson, 77, formerly of Frost Proof, FL and Laketon, IN died March 6, 2008 at 8: 45 a.m. in Menorah Hospital South, Overland Park, KS. She was born May 5, 1930 in Mentone, IN to Harry A. & Florence A. (Eckman) Shafer. On June 11, 1950 she married Ronald "Gabby" Dixon. He survives. She was employed with Heckman Bindery as a Bench Sew for 20 years. She retired in 1990. In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, Dennis Ray Dixon, Fort Wayne, IN and Donald Jay Dixon, Thomason, GA; one daughter, Mrs. William (Deborah Kay) Prather, Kansas City, KS; one sister Doris Kyle, Lafayette, IN; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. SANDRA O. BORGMANN, 69, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN
Sandra O. Borgmann, 69, North Manchester, IN died at 9: 06 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2008 in an automobile accident in Huntington County, IN. She was born July 30, 1938 in Roaring Spring, PA and was a graduate of Roaring Spring High School. She completed her undergraduate degree at Juniata College in 1960 and married her husband, Egon Borgmann, on June 25 of that same year. She also completed post-graduate course work in Elementary Education at Temple University. She was an elementary school teacher in the Upper Darby (PA) School District and later committed her energies to raising her three children. Active in the church her entire life, she was at various times a member of the Roaring Spring First Church of the Brethren, Trinity Presbyterian Church and the Wilmington Church of the Brethren in Wilmington, DE, and after moving to North Manchester, IN, the Manchester Church of the Brethren. She was the beloved "Grammy" of seven grandchildren and enjoyed attending and supporting her grandchildren's sports and school activities, gardening, cross-stitching, and baking pies and prolific numbers of Christmas cookies to share with her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert S. and Mildred H. (Hoover) Over. She is survived by her husband, Egon Borgmann, North Manchester, IN; her children, Karin (John) Borgmann-Winter, Conshohocken, PA; R. Her parents, John & Carol (Mercer) Spriggs survive at North Manchester. She was a junior at Manchester High School and attended Christian Fellowship Church. Also surviving are four brothers; Carlos R. (C.J. Davis) Spriggs, Ft. Wayne, IN; Andy (Kathy Ross) Spriggs, Columbia City, IN; Brian E. (Sandy) Riley, Ledbetter, KY; Jason P. Michael G. Straka, 80, North Manchester, IN died Friday, February 29, 2008 at 1: 16 a.m. in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN. He was born January 25, 1928 in Whiting, IN to Paul George & Ann (Szanto) Sztraka. On December 15, 1951 he married Esther L. Frey. She died September 4, 2007. He graduated from George Rogers Clark High School, Hammond, IN and attended Purdue University. He served U.S. Army 1946-1951 and served in Korea. Mike was a member of First Brethren Church, North Manchester, IN. He was a retired steel worker with Inland Steel, East Chicago, IN. He is survived by two sons, Michael G. (Nancy) Straka, Laporte, IN and Randall (Patty) Straka, North Manchester, IN; one brother, Andy Straka, Whiting, IN; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Edith Viola Pressler, 93, Plainfield, IN and formerly of North Manchester, IN died at 3: 50 p.m. Thursday, February 28, 2008 in Hendricks Regional Health Hospital, Danville, IN. She was born in Huntington, IN on June 26, 1914 to Frank Lewis & Leto Florence (Nie) Stephan. On June 27, 1931 she married Ralph Royden "Roy" Pressler. He died August 25, 2001. Edith was a homemaker and collator at Heckman Bindrey, North Manchester. She was a member of the Church of Nazarene, Plainfield, IN. Surviving are three sons; Hallis "Bud" (Bonnie) Pressler, Wabash, IN ; Darwin (Jean) Pressler, Plainfield, IN ; Steven (Karen) Pressler, Nashville, IN. One daughter, Barbara (Charles "Chick") Lynn, Rome City, IN. Eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. EFFIE M. WELCH, 95, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN
Effie M. Welch, 95, North Manchester, Indiana, died at 11: 18 p.m. Wednesday, February 27, 2008 in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester, IN. She was born April 11, 1912 in Huntington County, IN to William L. and Stella M. (Shoemaker) Chalmers. On August 15, 1953 she married Oliver K. Welch. He died November 16, 1978. Effie graduated from Manchester College in 1946 and was a retired Huntington county Elementary School Teacher and Homemaker. She was a member of Extension Homemakers for 40 years, member of Wabash County Retired Teachers Association, member Manchester Church of the Brethren and participated in Womens Auxiliary through the church. She also attended Pleasant View Church of the Brethren, Whitley County, IN. She is survived by one daughter, Connie (Mark) Welch Stuffle, Bloomington, IN; Two grandchildren, Bryan (Kristin) Cook, Greenwood, IN and Shawn Cook, Bloomington, IN; and one great grandson, Elijah Cook, Greenwood, IN. ALAN THORNE HOWENSTINE, 84, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN
Alan Thorne Howenstine, 84, Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester, IN, died February 27, 2008 at 10: 55 a.m. at the Wabash Community Hospital, Wabash, IN.He was born to Paul and Lucile Howenstine, January 27, 1924 in Huntington, IN. After high school, he attended Manchester College where he was an outstanding basketball athlete ranking 2nd in the state for scoring his freshman year. He also earned Second Team All-Conference honors. He also was named to the College All-Star Team selected by sportswriters throughout Indiana. In his sophomore year he was ranked third in the state for scoring. He also earned First Team All-Conference honors. His career at Manchester College was cut short by his enlistment in the army in March 1943. While in the army he was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He also was awarded the Bronze Star for valor in action. After returning from WWII, he began farming in Huntington County, later returning to college for a degree in Elementary Education. Other colleges attended were the University of Mississippi and Ball State University. His teaching career began at Miami, Indiana, where he taught and then was principal. He was teacher and principal at Chester Elementary School, North Manchester, IN 1958-1963. He was principal at Nelson School, Morton Grove, IL, where the school library was named in his honor. He next became Superintendent of Schools in Union, IL and completed his career in Michigan City, IN where he was a teacher and Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He was named to the Sports Hall of Fame, Otho Winger Society, Alumni Service Award, all of Manchester College. He had also been a member of the Lion’s Club, Kiwanis Club, Phi Delta Kappa and several educational groups. Along with his wife, Melba, he is survived by a daughter, Gene Alayne Gard, a son, Kenton Alan Howentine (Janet), and one son, Kevin Kyle Howenstine, deceased. Also, surviving are three grandchildren, Skyler Epperson, Rachel Howenstine, and Carly Howenstine, as well as three great-grandchildren. A sister, Doris Hess survives; a brother, Douglas, is deceased. Private graveside services will be held for the immediate family with a memorial service at a later date. The family requests that memorials be given to the Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation, 3932D Swift Road, Sarasota, FL 34231 or Wabash County Community Foundation, North Manchester, IN 46962 or a charity of you choice.

COLLEEN V. SCHEETZ, 90, FORMERLY OF ROANN, IN
Colleen V. Scheetz, 90, formerly of rural Roann, IN died at 3: 10 a.m. Monday, February 25, 2008 in Rusk County Memorial Hospital, Ladysmith, WI. She was born May 1, 1917 in North Manchester, IN to Galen & Pauline (Weber) Cook. During her early years she was raised by her grandparents, George & Wilma Weber, in North Manchester, IN while her mother attended Purdue University. She graduated from Central High School, North Manchester, IN and Purdue University with a Master's in Home Economics Education. After college, she taught school in Laketon, IN, and at St. Bonifice School, Lafayette, IN and occasional classes at Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN. While traveling back and forth to campus from her grandparents home, she fell in love with 'the man in the rear view mirror' her bus driver, Ernest Scheetz. They were married April 28, 1944. He died June 19, 1995. Her married life (51 years) was spent in West Lafayette raising her children, teaching, being active in church functions and being "on call" for the neighborhood children. In later years, Colleen & Ernie, returned to the family farm outside Roann, IN. There they spent time with friends, were active in church activities and continued to be strong parents. After Ernie's death, Colleen moved to Wisconsin, and eventually spent her last 10 years with her other family at Queen of Angels in Radisson, WI. She was their "grandma", peaceful and loved. She will be missed by her son, Jeffrey and his partner, Lana Crafton, of Naples, FL and daughter, Doraleen Scheetz-Hollar and the late Patrick Hollar of Mankato, MN. Dorothea J. "Dot" Biehl, Urbana, IN died at 1: 30 a.m. Friday, February 22, 2008 in Miller's Merry Manor, Wabash, IN. She was born September 11, 1927 in Wabash, IN to Charles Edward & Onda Fay (Hockett) Willcox. On January 28, 1951 she married D. Gene Biehl. He died September 16, 2003. She graduated from Urbana High School class of 1945. Dot was a member of Urbana Yoke Parrish, Urbana, IN, Ladies Night Out Home-Ec Club and Wabash County Board of Health. She was instrumental in originating the Seven Mile Festival in Urbana and the Urbana Fire Dept. Halloween Parties. For many years she and her husband spent summers at Yogi Bear Park, Pierceton, IN. She was a homemaker and worked in food service at Manchester College, North Manchester, IN and the Honeywell Center, Wabash, IN. She operated Dot's Corner in Urbana for many years and later did home-style catering for weddings and parties. She is survived by four sons: Ted (Sandra) Biehl, Urbana, IN; Kris (LaDonna) Biehl, Urbana, IN; Roger (Eileen) Biehl, Urbana, IN; Jeff (Renee) Biehl, Urbana, IN; One brother, Tom (Joyce) Willcox, Wabash, IN; One brother-In-Law, Dean Biehl, Urbana, IN; and ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Rex Biehl, in 1994, and two brothers, John Willcox and Claude Willcox. SERVICES: MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2008 AT 1: 00 P.M. IN DELAUGHTER-MCKEE MORTUARY, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN. CALLING: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2008 1: 00-6: 00 P.M. IN DELAUGHTER-MCKEE MORTUARY, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN. Pastor Randy Myers will officiate. Burial in Speicher cemetery, Urbana, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to Urbana Lion's Club, c/o Stephen Gilbert, 306 W. 2nd St., North Manchester, IN 46962.
