She was born in Prestonsburg, KY on February 28, 1913 to Alex & Caroline (Prater) Howard. She married Amos Owens on March 31, 1931. He died March 2, 1985. Rosie was a homemaker, a farmer and member of the Gospel Hill Pentecostal Church of God, Silver Lake. She is survived by four sons; Edward (Faye) Owens, Claypool, IN / Earman (Ivy) Owens, Silver Lake, IN / Earl (Kathy) Owens, Tacoma, WA / Ellis (Dee) Owens, Alexandria, IN. Four daughters; Mrs. Bill (Norma) Meade and Mrs. Don (Sue) Murphy, both of South Whitley, IN / Centha McKenzie, Roann, IN / Mrs. Larry (Bonnie) Shepherd, North Manchester, IN. 29 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren and 28 step great-grandchildren. Two daughters, Edith Minnix and Juanita Wolford are deceased. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, six sisters, three grandsons, one daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law, a half brother and a half sister. Carrie Poe, 74, North Manchester, IN died at 9: 42 p.m. Saturday, August 30, 2008 in Timbercrest Healthcare Center. She was born February 17, 1934 in Emma, Floyd County, KY to George & Cardella (Jarrell) Burchett. On October 14, 1954 she married Cecil Poe. He died August 15, 1997. Surviving are four sons; George (Pama) Poe, Cecil W. (Mary) Poe, Harold Poe, Jack (Becky) Poe, all of North Manchester, IN ; four daughters, Carol Tackett, Emma (Wayne) Barrett, Rose (Rick) Grossnickle, all of North Manchester, IN and Bonnie Winterrowd, Cromwell, IN. A daughter-in-law, Sonia Poe, Roann, IN. One brother, Charlie Collins, Milian, MI; three sisters, Sylvia Daugherty, Warsaw, IN, Jeraldine Mangun, Mentone, IN, Opal Woods, Albion, MI, 32 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Two sons, John Lee Poe, James Dean Poe; 2 brothers, 1 sister, 2 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild are deceased. WILLIAM S. BUMGARDNER, 84, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN
William S. Bumgardner, 84, North Manchester, IN died at 7: 45 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2008 in Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester, IN. He was born February 17, 1924 in Pike County, KY to Floyd & Dorothy (Tackett) Bumgardner. On August 3, 1946 he married Ann P. Carter. She survives. Bill retired from Celotex, Lagro, IN after 39 1/2 years of service. He was a member of Church of the Nazarene, North Manchester, IN and a volunteer fireman for North Manchester Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed making doll chairs out of wood clothes pins for his family and friends. He also collected flashlights and pocketknives for many years. He never met a stranger and would ask everyone he met if they knew the Lord. In addition to his wife, Ann, he is survived by one son, William Bumgardner, Cincinnati, OH; two daughters, Ola Geneva "Genie" Wildridge, Wabash, IN and Barbara Ann (Robert) Hart, North Manchester, IN; two sisters, Rachel (Carl) Damron, Rochester, IN and Mary Meyer, Rochester, IN; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Miriam Anna Shull, 91, formerly of rural Claypool and Whitley County died at 5: 25 p.m. Friday, August 22, 2008 at the home of her daughter in Fort Wayne, IN. She was born in Wabash County, IN on September 4, 1916 to Howard & Effie (Montel) Overholser. On December 27, 1941 she married Gerald L. Shull. He died October 19, 1979. Surviving are two sons; Howard Shull, Ft. Wayne, IN and Lamoin "Jerry" (Teresa)Shull, Plainfield, IN. One daughter, Mrs. Mike (Mary Ann) O'Neal, Ft. Wayne, IN. One son-in-law, Jim Hartog, Argos, IN. Seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One daughter, Joyce Hartog and one brother, Dewight Overholser are deceased. Bev LaMont Allen, 63, North Manchester, IN died at 6: 40 p.m. Thursday, Augsut 21, 2008 in his resdience. He was born in Richmond, KY on December 22, 1944 to Bev & Mary Hallie (Carpenter) Allen. On March 20, 2007 he married Loretta L. DeYarmon. She survives. Also surviving are four sons; Steven Allen, Wabash, IN / Joshua Allen & Danny Allen, Florida and Dustin Allen, North Manchester, IN. Two daughters; Margarett May Allen, North Manchester and Kayla Means, Warsaw, IN. Four brothers, Gerald Allen, Kentucky / Thomas Allen and Claude "Wayne" Allen, both of Florida / Dewight Allen, Texas. Five sisters; May, Mildred "Millie", Mary Leece, Louise, and Jessie. Two grandchildren, Michael LaMont Allen and Elix Joseph Allen. One daughter is deceased. LaMont was a US Army veteran and before becoming ill was a welder at Par-Kan Co., Silver Lake, IN. She was a homemaker and retired from Bay State Abrasives, North Manchester, IN. She was a US Navy Veteran serving 1943-1945 and a member of Olive Branch Church of God, Roann, IN. On December 15, 1945 she married Hubert Reed. He died August 24, 2001. She is survied by two sons, Greg Reed, Woodburn, IN and Myron (Cheryl) Reed, New Haven, IN; two daughters, Mrs. Rick (Melanie) Baber, Wabash, IN and Mrs. Stan (Christine) Robison, Roann, IN; One daughter-in-law, Lisa Reed, North Manchester, IN; ten grandchilren and thirteen great grandchildren. LLOYD E. STANLEY, 90, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN
Lloyd E. Stanley, 90, North Manchester, IN died August 21, 2008 at 1: 25 p.m. in Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester, IN. He was born July 18, 1918 in Huntington County, IN to Noah & Bertha (Chalmers) Stanley. Lloyd was a retired farmer and was also employed by the Indiana State Highway Dept. He also was a dispatcher for the North Manchester Police Department. He then worked for the North Manchester Water Utilites Department. He then was a dispatcher and fire truck driver for the Chester Township Fire Department until his retirement in 1983. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran. He graduated from Bippus High School, Bippus, IN and was a member of the North Manchester Lions Club and United Methodist Church, North Manchester, IN. On December 31, 1941 he married Agnes P. Gaff. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Wayne Stanley, North manchester, IN and Glen Stanley, Indianapolis, IN; one daughter, Kay Leslie, Warsaw, IN; six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren and two step great great grandchildren. He worked in maintenance with SPX Contec in Pierceton, IN for 8 years and previously at North Manchester Foundry for 20 years. He was an avid fisherman and a knifemaker. On August 10, 1984 he married Lisa Dotson. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Travis Lee Reed & Tyler Reed both of North Manchester, IN; two brothers, Greg Reed, Woodburn, IN and Myron (Cheryl) Reed, New Haven, IN; two sisters, Mrs. Rick (Melanie) Baber, Wabash, IN and Mrs. Stan (Christine) Robison, Roann, IN. LaVerne C. Montel, 75, Warsaw, IN died at 2: 30 p.m. Sunday, August 17, 2008 in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw. She was born in Wabash County, Indiana on February 28, 1933 to Blaine F. & Effie (Amburg) Garber. On July 10, 1964 she married Larry L. Montel. He Survives. Also survivng are one son, Brent (Sarah) Montel and a daughter, Rhonda (Brian) Wood, both of rural Claypool, IN. Three grandchildren, Kyle Wood, Kory Wood and Joshua Montel all of rural Claypool, IN. One brother, Earl (Dee) Garber, Mesa, AZ. Two sisters, Wanda (Mrs. John) Trout, Ft. Pierce, FL and Linda Sue Garber, Wabash, IN. She was preceded in death by one brother. She was a 1951 graduate of Laketon High School, member of Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren and Wabash County Rural Youth. For 25 years LaVerne was a 4-H leader of the Monroe-Go-Getters which she founded. For 38 years she was an OB nurse at Wabash County Hospital and retired in 1992. He was born July 18, 1926 in Niles, MI to Walter M. & Thelma (Olinger) Poston. On June 6, 1948 he married Iona D. Shaffer. She survives. Bill was a barber for 50 years and operated the O.K. Barber Shop in North Manchester, IN. He was a member of Congregational Christian Church, North Manchester, IN, American Legion, VFW, Masonic Lodge Deming 88, and Disable American Veterans all of North Manchester, IN. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Michael (Bonnie) Poston, Clemmons, NC and Kim A. "Louie" (Rida) Poston, Cullman, AL; two daughters, Deborah Dee Young, Fort Wayne, IN and Mrs. Ken (Diana Lee) Lybarger, North Manchester, IN; two sisters, Betty Shannon, Everston, WA and Jean Baccellia, Sedona, AZ; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was born May 19, 1937 in Logan, WV to Thomas & Eileen (Chafins) Sizemore. On May 5, 1987 she married John Watkins. He survives. She was a homemaker and member of Hillside Holiness Church, North Manchester, IN. In addition to her husband she is survived by one son, Gerondia Adams, Detroit, MI; three brothers, Roddie (Phyllis) Sizemore, North Manchester, IN, Randy (Brenda) Sizemore, West Virginia, and Eugene (Jean) Sizemore, North Manchester, IN; one sister-in-law, Naomi Sizemore, Romeoville, IL; two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Max E. Rhoades, 83, Elkhart, IN died at 4: 30 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2008 in Riverside Village, Elkhart, IN. He was born June 8, 1925 in Roann, IN to Dewey & Iva (Hoppas) Rhoades. He graduated from Silver Lake High School and was a WWII Navy Veteran. Max was an auto technician at Sorg Dodge in Goshen, IN retiring in 1989. In 1946 he married Marjorie L. Rowland. She died in 1954. He then married Elizabeth Darlene "Betty" Kline on November 11, 1955. She survives. He and his wife enjoyed traveling in the west. He was an avid woodworker. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Malcolm (Sue) Rhoades, New Castle, IN and Rick Rhoades, Goshen, IN; three daughters, Myra (Dennis) Wilson, Edwardsburg, MI, Maria (David) Purciarele, Bristol, IN and Lisa (Troy) Gill, Elkhart, IN; three brothers, Arden (Mary) Rhoades, Warsaw, IN, Phillip (Cheryl) Rhoades, Goshen, IN, and Eddie (Sharon) Rhoades, Oelwein, Iowa; four sisters, Wanda Hoover, LaGrange, IN, Norma (Merl) Tethrake, Milford, IN, Donna (Keith) Troup, Goshen, IN and Melba (Robert) Flieschauer, LaGrange, IN; fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was born at Salyersville, KY on March 3, 1954 to Fred & Myrtle (Manns) Conley. She married Jerry Pennington and he survives. Also surviving are two sons; Jeffrey Pennington, Mishawaka, IN and Chris (Jami) Pennington, Ft. Wayne, IN. Two daughters; Jessica (Rafael) Diaz, North Manchester, IN and Cathy (Brian) Mabry, Temple, TX. Four brothers, Rev. Amos (Eloise) Conley, Tennesee; Norman (Shirley) Conley, Chickamauga, GA; Alfred (Sherry) Conley, Akron, IN; Jerry Conley, North Manchester, IN. Six sisters, Zefie Jackson, Akron, IN; Gracie Jackson, Akron, IN; Martha (Ray) Hancock, North Manchester, IN; Christene (Bill) Cornell, Akron, IN; Lorene Tesh, North Manchester, IN; Izania (Bruce) Thorington, Peru, IN. Six grandchildren. One son, Jerry W. Pennington died in 1990. One sister is also deceased. Since 2007 she has been caring for children in her home. Earlier she has been employed with Manchester Metals, Dollar General Store, BKB, United Technologies and in the kitchen at Peabody Retirement Community and Miller's Merry Manor. Nancy loved her children and grandchildren more than anything in the world. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and with her spare time she loved to garden, word search and knitting. Eugene Laytart Sr., 66, Mentone, IN died at the home of his son at rural Warsaw, IN on Saturday, August 2, 2008. He was born January 23, 1942 in Richmond, IN to Alvin & Edith (Mann) Laytart. His mother survives at Fountain City, IN. He retired from Par-Kan Co. at Silver Lake, IN. He married Edith Meyers and she died in 2002. Also surviving are one son, Eugene (Miriam) Laytart Jr., Warsaw, IN. Four daughters, Mrs. Larry (Vicki) Dills, Akron, IN; Mrs. Gary (Cherrie) Gray, Richmond, IN; Alice Dills, Franklin, NC and Mrs. Brian (Eugenia) Chasse, Northwood, NH. Two brothers, Sonny Laytart, Columbus, OH and David Laytart, Phoenix, AZ. Two sisters, Mrs. Doug (Betty) Ashenfelter, Fountain City, IN and Ann Kelly, Richmond, IN. She was born April 7, 1916 in Kosciusko County, IN to William H. & Lillie May (Schonauer) Tschantz. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1934. Nora was a homemaker and a cook in the former Servia and Sidney Schools. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, North Manchester, IN. She was a former member of the United Methodist Women and Eastern Star. On February 7, 1936 she married John T. Speicher. He died January 5, 1999. She is survived by one son, Jim Speicher, North Manchester, IN; one daughter, Peggy Bernardin, Somerset, IN; five grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. One daughter, Penny Deal, died in 1999. Two brothers and three sisters are deceased. SERVICES: MONDAY, AUGUST 4, 2008 AT 10: 00 A.M. AT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN. CALLING: SUNDAY, AUGUST 3, 2008 12: 00-4: 00 P.M. AT DELAUGHTER-MCKEE MORTUARY, NORTH MANCHESTER, IN. Pastor Larry Ray and Mary Inderlied will officiate. Burial in South Whitley cemetery, South Whitley, IN. Memorial contributions may be made to Peabody Caring Circle, 400 W. Seventh Street, North Manchester, IN 46962 or Wabash-Miami Home Health Care & Hospice, 710 N. East Street, Wabash, IN 46992.
