Joan and her twin brother, Jim were born in Neenah, Wis., to Lucille and Louis Hansen. She graduated from St. John’s Hickey Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 with both a degree in nursing and a diamond from the wonderful Dr. Shafer.

She was elected to the Alexandria School Board, was a member of the board that built the high school and was also president. Service was an integral part of Joan’s life and she gave back generously to her community, family and friends.
Joan loved a good time and was a quick wit. Joanie made everything fun – whether it was playing gin rummy or just hanging out. She was a gourmet cook and a gracious hostess and knew how to throw a party on a minute’s notice. Everyone loved Joan. She was dearly loved by the staff at Summit Convalescent Center who treated her so tenderly during the last seven years of her life. She will be deeply missed by her husband, family and friends.
