Betty J. Harrell
PLYMOUTH — Betty J. Harrell, 83, 805 Baker Street, Plymouth, passed away in the presence of
her loving family at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2007, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical
Center, Plymouth.

Born in Walkerton on May 13, 1924, Betty was the daughter of Lewis T. and Edith L. Dipert
Kelver.

She graduated from Walkerton High School in 1942.

On May 30, 1942, in Walkerton, Betty and William L. Harrell were married . William preceded her
in passing on August 26, 2000.

The family lived in Argos from 1957 to 1998. Before and after those years, they lived in Plymouth

Betty was a school bus driver for the Argos Community School System for 11 years.

Her God, her church and her family were very important to Betty.

For 30 years, she taught Sunday school and Junior Church at the Assembly of God in Plymouth.
She sang and played the piano, organ and guitar.

She was a 4-H volunteer for many years.

Betty is survived by six children, two sons and four daughters.

Her sons are William E. and Rose Harrell, Argos: Paul L. and Carrie Harrell, Plymouth.

Her daughters are Barbara J. and John Pittman, Plymouth: Catherine L. and Larry Zimmer,
Jacksonville, Ill., Susan K. Miller, Plymouth and Darlene L. and Jim Zimmer, Fort Collins, Colo.

Sixteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and one step- greatgreat-granddaughter,
together with a sister, Pauline Knowlton, Walkerton, survive as well.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son and five sisters: Marge
Neidlinger, Mildred Williams, Lois Klatt, Dorothy Harrell and Mary Lou Johnson and three
brothers: Elmer Kelver, Harold Kelver and Wayne Kelver.

Friends are invited to come and share memories and celebrate the life of Betty Harrell from 4 to
8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St.,
Plymouth and one hour prior to the services at the Church on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, in the New Song
Community Church which is on the south-east corner of Jefferson Street and Kingston Road.
Rev. Justin Chambers, and Rev. Lowell Ott, pastors of the church, will officiate.

Burial will be in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorial gifts in Betty’s memory may be made to the Marshall County 4-H or to the New Song
Community Church.

Max E. Tharp
PLYMOUTH — Max E. Tharp has been called upon once again to serve. Max, 84, died
unexpectedly of natural causes, at his home, 120 Elliott Ave., Plymouth, at 12:29 a.m. on
Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007.

When Max is remembered, people will speak of his hard work, compassion and dedication to his
church, family, country and community. He shared a masterful talent in funeral service that
spanned 60 years.

Max was born in Bourbon, the son of Marvin R. and Mary Spencer Tharp, on Dec. 27, 1922. At
home he worked in the family creamery. He graduated from West High School with the class of
1940.

Max served his country in the United States Army in World War II stationed in Northern France
from 1943–1946. Upon his return he began working at the Johnson & Son Funeral Home with
Ralph Johnson and Max’s brother-in-law, Francis Johnson.

On Feb. 1, 1948, in Plymouth, Max and Marian L. Walterhouse were married .

He then pursued his career in funeral service and graduated from the Indiana College of
Mortuary Science in 1949 and received his Embalmer/Funeral Director’s license. Max had a gift
of remembering the events of nearly every funeral service and family. He continued to serve as
a consultant for the funeral home as recent as this past Tuesday.

Work was his life hobby, yet in his later years, he enjoyed the many activities of his
grandchildren.

A long-time member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Plymouth Lions Club, and the
V.F.W. Post 1162, he was also a Republican precinct committeeman and served on the Center
Township Advisory Board for a number of years.

Max is survived by Marian, his wife of 59 years, and by their children, two sons and a daughter.

His children are Jack A. and Pamela Tharp of Noblesville; James R. and Karen K. Tharp of
Speedway and Jill L. Tharp of Indianapolis.

Five grandchildren also survive, they are: Zachary Tharp, Amber (Doug) Doster, Rachel Tharp,
Leah Tharp and Lorian Tharp. A great-grandson includes Jack William Doster.

A sister, June Gilligan of Banner Elk, N.C., and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, a sister; Martha E. Johnson, and a brother; Robert S.
Tharp.

Friends are invited to share memories and celebrate the life of Max Tharp from 3 to 7 p.m. on
Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, in the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St.,
Plymouth.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, in the Trinity United Methodist
Church, 425 S. Michigan St., where friends may call one hour prior to services. The Rev. William
Kaster, pastor of the church, will officiate.

Burial will follow in New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth with Military Honors accorded him by the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1162 and American Legion Post 27.

Memorial gifts in Max’s memory may be given to the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Ethelyn A. Titler
SAND CREEK – Ethelyn A. Titler, 94, passed from this life on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007 at the
home of her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Larry Taylor, in Walkerton.

Ethelyn was born July 22, 1913, the oldest child of Ernie and Anna (Luthey) Leininger. On April
7, 1938, she married George W. Titler in Metamora, Ohio; a marriage of 62 years. George
preceded her in death in 2000.

Ethelyn worked side by side with her husband at the farm in the Sand Creek area. For 25 years
they enjoyed spending winters in Bradenton, Florida. She also traveled extensively throughout
the United States with her family. Ethelyn was an active member of Bethany Assembly of God
Church in Adrian.

Ethelyn is survived by her daughter Gloria and her husband Larry Taylor of Walkerton; two
grandchildren, Lowell (Nancy) Taylor of Polo, Ill. And Kimberly (Michael) Bucheit of Valparaiso;
and two great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Reid Taylor. In addition to her husband, George, she
was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Vern Leininger, and two sisters, Ada Kentner
and Orpha Wyse.

Funeral services for Ethelyn will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, 2007 at the Wagley
Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Packard cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Friday
from 9 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Contributions in memory of Ethelyn may be directed to
the Plymouth Church of the Brethren. Envelopes are available at the Wagley Funeral Home.

John C. Leonard
PLYMOUTH — John C. Leonard, 84, of 14484 Crest Lane, Plymouth, passed away Saturday,
Aug. 18, 2007 at his home.

He was born Sept. 16, 1922 in Springfield, Ill., to John and Rose (Delaney) Leonard. John
served his country, in the Army, during WWII, in the 76th Infantry Third Army. He married Iona
Sparks in Saint Paul, Minn. On April 1, 1944. John owned grain elevators in Chenoa, Ill. John
and his family moved to Plymouth in 1970. He managed Agway Seed for 17 years.

John was a member of Saint Michael Catholic Church, V.F.W. Post #1162, and the Knights of
Columbus. John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His greatest joy was his family.

John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Iona; their sons, John and Kara Leonard, III of Brighton,
Australia, Kenneth and Elizabeth Leonard of Springfield, Ill., Philip Leonard of Plymouth; their
daughters, Sheila and Sam Easley of New Milford, Conn. And Barbara and Rick Miller of
Plymouth; his brothers and sisters, Russell and Gloria Leonard of Decatur, Ill., Rose Brock of
Saint Lucie, Fla., and James Leonard of Illiopolis, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by a daughter Mary; his brothers, Richard Leonard
and Eugene Leonard; and two grandsons, Dustin Easley and Philip Pearson.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2007, at 11 a.m. in Saint Michael
Catholic Church, Plymouth, with the Rev. Father William Kummer officiating. Burial will be in
New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth. The V.F.W. Post #1162 will present John, with Military
Honors, at the graveside.

Family and friends are invited to share in the visitation on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, from 4 to
7 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison St., Plymouth, IN, 46563. The
Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Funeral Home.

The family would like for any memorials contributions to be given to Saint Michael Catholic
Church or to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc.

Floyd "Buzz" Chambers
KNOX — Floyd “Buzz” Chambers, 73, of Knox, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007 at Starke Memorial
Hospital.

He is survived by sons: Rick (Marlene) Chambers of Knox and Randy (Beverly) Chambers of
Knox; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers: Bob of Aldine, Chuck and Alan,
both of Knox and Bill of South Bend; and sister, Charlotte Snyder of South Bend.

Visitation is Wednesday, Aug. 22 at noon CDT until the time of services at Rannells Funeral
Home, Hamlet Chapel.

Funeral services are Wednesday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. CDT at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Crown Hill cemetery, Knox.

Mark Edward Scott
TIPPECANOE — Mark Edward Scott, 46, of Tippecanoe, passed away unexpectedly at 6:25
p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007 in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center of Plymouth.

He is survived by his two daughters: Sherri Foust (Mrs. Joe Tackett and Stephanie Scott all of
Tippecanoe; three grandchildren; his mother, Marilyn Scott of Tippecanoe; and three brothers:
David Scott and Doug Scott of Tippecanoe and Steve and Kim Scott of Argos.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 10:30 a.m. in the Tippecanoe Community
Church, 2940 18b Rd. in Tippecanoe. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church
before the funeral services.

Visitation is Wednesday, Aug. 22from 2 to 8 p.m. at Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home 115 S.
Main St. Bourbon.

Burial will follow in the Summit Chapel cemetery at Bourbon.
