Edward A. Marciniak

EDWARD A. MARCINIAK May 21, 1925 – March 20, 2002 Edward A. Marciniak, 76, residing on S. 36th Street, South Bend, IN died at noon on March 20, 2002 in his residence. He served as a Post Office Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service retiring in 1983. Mr. Marciniak was born on May 21, 1925 in Chicago, IL to the late Anthony and Eva (Sobieski) Marciniak and lived in the South Bend community most of his life. On September 21, 1963 in South Bend, IN he married Rose Vicsik, who survives. Surviving along with his wife, Rose of South Bend are his son and daughter-in-law, John and Jayne Marciniak of Niles, MI; and a step-son and his wife, Phillip and Ramona Wagner of South Bend; and eight grandchildren, Ricky, Jr., Nova Ann, Christina, Dustin, Catanna, Marci, Felicia and John Boy. Two sons preceded him in death, Robert Marciniak in 1979 and Ricky Wagner in 1981. Mr. Marciniak was valedictorian of the 1943 graduating class at Washington High School. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2002 in the Chapel at Highland cemetery, South Bend. Rev. will officiate. Following services friends and family will gather at VFW Post 360. MARIE RICKER, AGE 95, OF WALNUT CREEK NURSING HOME, PLYMOUTH, INDIANA, DIED AT 12:35 A.M. SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 2002, IN THE NURSING HOME. SHE WAS BORN ON APRIL 26, 1907 IN WAKARUSA, INDIANA TO ALFRED AND LEAH (MUTTI) BIRK. PRECEDING IN DEATH WERE HER PARENTS, HER SON, HAROLD RICKER, HER GRANDDAUGHTER, SUSAN CONNER, HER SISTER HELEN BATES AND BY TWO BROTHERS, EDGAR AND RALPH BIRK. Alice F. Weldy

October 9, 1915 - July 12, 2002

Alice F. (Sorenson) Weldy 86, residing at St. Paul’s Retirement Community in South Bend, Indiana passed away at 3:35 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2002 at St. Paul’s Retirement Community. She was born October 9, 1915 in Porter County, Indiana as the daughter of Myron and Elsie (King) Dillingham and has lived in this area since 1937. In 1934 she married Robert B. Arnold who passed away in 1938, in 1944 she married Arthur L. Sorenson who passed away in 1983, in 1986 she married Myron D. Weldy who passed away November of 1998. Mrs. Weldy was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Habijanac in 1998, a sister, Marcia Greenawalt in 1998 and a brother, Leonard Dillingham in 1999. Mrs. Weldy is survived by two sons, Robert (Joan) Arnold of White Heath, Illinois and Keith (Becky) Sorenson of Elkhart, Indiana; two stepsons, Leroy Sorenson of Colorado and Arthur Sorenson of Chicago, Illinois; a stepdaughter, Lois I. Rouch of South Bend, a brother-in-law, George Greenawalt of Colombus, Nebraska, twenty grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Mrs. Weldy was a member of Ridgedale Presbyterian Church where she was involved in the choir and Ladies Circle. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Rose Croix Chapter where she served as Past Worthy Matron. She retired from Abstract & Title Company, South Bend. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2002 at the Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, 1406 E. Ewing St., South Bend. Rev. Jack Volkers, pastor, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow in Olive cemetery, Wakarusa. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Palmer Funeral Home – River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Stanley A. Dias

January 23, 1931 - August 23, 2002

Stanley Anthony Dias, 72, residing on Old Spanish Trail, South Bend, passed away at 7:05 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2002 in his home surrounded by his family. He was born January 23, 1931 in Mishawaka, Indiana as the son of Charles & Stella (Giszewski) Dias and has remained a lifelong resident of this community. He graduated in 1935 from Mishawaka High School. He served as a truck driver for many years and retired in 1994 from Alvan Trucking Company. Stanley had a great passion for music. He played the drums and sang on any occasion he could. He also had the opportunity to play on the Midnight Jamboree in Nashville, TN with Dottie West. He served his country enlisting in the United States Marine Corp. on August 23, 1950 and was honorably discharged on August 22, 1953 as a Corporal. He was a member of the Osceola American Legion Post #308, Veterans of Foreign Wars, South Bend Moose Lodge #58, and became a member of the Osceola United Methodist Church on April 14, 2002. On November 26, 1960 in St. Monica’s Church, Mishawaka, he married Thelma LaVern Conrad Jones. He is survived by his loving wife Thelma LaVern, along with two daughters, Sandra (Rodney) Hager of Orleans, IN; Anita (Dave Krol) Jones of South Bend; and a son Doug (Sue) Jones, Sr., of South Bend. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a sister Jeanette (Harold) Grebe of Mishawaka. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Dias Jr. on July 10, 1951. Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2002 in Osceola United Methodist Church, 431 North Beech Road, Osceola. Rev. Brian Beeks, pastor will officiate. The family will receive friends one half hour prior to services Wednesday in the church. Memorial contributions on behalf of Mr. Dias may be offered to Osceola United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society, 535 W. Edison Road, Mishawka, IN 46545. Frances J. Webb

August 9, 1920 - February 5, 2002

Frances J. Webb, 81, residing on West Jefferson Blvd., Mishawaka, passed away at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2002 in her home. She was born August 9, 1920 in South Bend, IN as the daughter of Claude & Gladys (O’Connor) Brooks and has remained a lifelong resident of St. Joseph County, IN. On June 29, 1936 she married Leo W. Hartz. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1965. Then on June 29, 1971 she married Walter E. Webb. He passed away in August 1986. She was also preceded by a brother George Everett Brooks, a step-son Richard Behnke, and two daughters-in-law, Lois Hartz & Kathryn Behnke. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Patricia & Ronald Wiles of Mishawaka; a son and daughter-in-law William L. & Paula Hartz of Conroe, TX; three step daughters, Edna (“Buck”) McDonald of Osceola; Thelma Mae (Lawrence) Taylor of Allegan, MI; and Beverly Van Buren of Niles, MI; a step son Robert (Janice) Webb of South Bend; sixteen grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Marcella Martin of Islamonade, FL; and Beverly Schrader of New Carlisle, IN; and a brother Donald Brooks of Las Vegas, NV. Mrs. Webb retired in 1970 from the Bendix Corp. where she worked on the assembly line in Dept 9A. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxillary of V.F.W. Post #360, Mishawaka, and a member of St. Andrew’s United Church of Christ. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2002 in Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Dale Speckman, pastor of St. Andrew’s United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. Friday in the Palmer Funeral Home. The family would like to offer special thanks to Dr. Emmett Roe and staff, Merrill Pharmacy, and the Staff of Hospice of St. Joseph County for their wonderful care and assistance through a very difficult time for the family. We will always remember all you have done for us.

Mildred L. Anderson

Mildred Lucille Anderson April 14, 1908 – September 10, 2002 Mildred Lucille Anderson, age 91, residing on West Washington Street, South Bend, passed away at 3:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2002 in St. Joseph Care Center-West from Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born April 14, 1908 in Creal Springs, Illinois as the daughter of John & Ona (Mount) White. She served for many years as a Registered Nurse in Private Duty. She was an active member of the Ladies Auxillary of American Legion Post 50. Mildred is survived by her granddaughter, Deborah (Dale) Grimes, of South Bend; and two great-granddaughters, Charity (Mike) Ford, and Victoria Grimes, both of South Bend. Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at Southlawn cemetery. Rev. Don Francis will officiate. There will be no visitation. Memorial donations on behalf of Mrs. Anderson may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Owen R. Kindig

March 5, 1924 - August 12, 2002

Owen R. Kindig, 78, formerly of Osceola, IN passed away at his home in Newark, OH. He was an electron microscopist research associate at OSU Veterinary Pathobiology for 25 years, retiring in 1988. Mr. Kindig was born on March 5, 1924 in Elkhart County, IN to Harrison L. and Pleasant J. (Donathen) Kindig. On December 6, 1942 in Elkhart, IN he married Margaret “Peg” Prout, who survives. Along with his wife of nearly 60 years, Peg Kindig of Newark, OH he is survived by his daughter, Karole (David) Doran of Louisville, KY; his son, O. Richard (Beth) Kindig, Jr. of Newark, OH; four granddaughters, Emily (Mircea) Crisan of Columbus, OH, Rebeccah (John) Koreny of Seattle, WA, and Rachel and Lydia Kindig of Newark, OH. He is also survived by his three sisters, Clarice (John) Miles of Osceola, IN, Joan (Keith) Cook of Jimtown, IN and Margaret Goss of Goshen, IN; and a brother, Martin Kindig of Fishers, IN. Owen was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lucille Marten; and two brothers, Dean Kindig and Ronald Kindig. Owen graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1942 and later from Ohio State University. He served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps in World War II in the Okinawa Campaign with the 6th Marine Division . He was a member of Columbus Bible Students Ecclesia, Columbus, OH for 56 years and served as an elder for 40 years. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2002 at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Chapel, 515 High Street, Worthington, OH. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Marion F. Kile

April 1, 1922 - March 27, 2002

Marion F. Kile, 79, residing on Squire Drive, South Bend, IN passed away at 5:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at Regency Place of South Bend. Mr. Kile served as a school administrator retiring in 1985 from Jordan Vocational School, Hazel Park, MI. He was born on April 1, 1922 in Goshen, IN as the son of Frank J. and M. Ferne (Erb) Kile and has lived in the Michiana area since 1998 coming from Warren, MI. On December 23, 1945 in Elkhart, IN he married Esther Drange, who survives. Along with his loving wife, Esther Kile of South Bend, survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Mark Christensen of Buchanan, MI; son and daughter-in-law, Randall C. and Lynn Kile of St. Petersburg, FL; four grandchildren; a sister, Mary E. (David) Carr of Elkhart and two brothers, Robert G. (Betty) Kile of Cabool, MO and Philip D. (Gwen) Kile of Lake City, MI. Mr. Kile was active in Youth Protection, Hazel Park, MI; listed in community “Leaders and Noteworthy Americans”; and a member of American Industrial Arts Association. Mr. Kile was presently a member of Gospel Center Missionary Church and a former member of Cedar Road Missionary Church, Osceola; Royal Oak Missionary Church, Michigan and Redeemer Baptist, Michigan. Mr. Kile was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Kile graduated from Concord High School in 1940; from C.E.I. in 1948. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Bethel College in 1952 and his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Goshen College in 1953 and completed his Master’s degree in 1963 at Wayne State University. Funeral services for Marion F. Kile will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at Gospel Center Missionary Church, 930 S. 30th Street, South Bend, IN. Rev. Phil Jerome and Rev. Charles Husted will officiate. Burial and graveside services will follow in Prairie Street cemetery, Elkhart, IN. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday in Palmer Funeral Homes, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Contributions in memory of Mr. Kile may be offered to Gospel Center Choir or to Bethel College, Mishawaka, IN.

Leo J. Simmermeyer

February 21, 1931 - June 21, 2002

Leo John Simmermeyer, 71 years old, residing on Sable Ridge Drive, South Bend, passed away at 12:45 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2002 at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Mr. Simmermeyer was born on February 21, 1931 in Franklin County, IN to the late Otto C. and Marie (Etter) Simmermeyer. He has lived in our local area since 1949, moving from Batesville, IN. On June 30, 1956 in Morris, IN, he married the former Ruth Voegele who survives. Along with his wife of 46 years, Ruth, survivors include three daughters, Karen (Scott) Hansen of Granger, Kim (Marty) Dailey of South Bend, and Karla (Rudy) Sawoscinski of South Bend; five grandchildren, Jennifer Dailey, Jason Simkins, Nicole Dailey, Kristina Simkins, and Michael Dailey; two step grandchildren, Heather Hansen and Stephanie Hansen; two sisters, Mary (Cliff) Burks of Lafayette, IN, and Gussie (Butch) Ertel of South Bend; and one brother, Robert Simmermeyer of Batesville, IN. Mr. Simmermeyer also had a very best friend whom he treated like a son, Tom Liddell. Two sisters, Theresa Sparks and Esther Ransom, and three brothers, James, Thomas, and Michael Simmermeyer, all preceded in death. Mr. Simmermeyer worked at Studebaker Corporation for 19 years and retired on March 31, 1997 from the Human Resource Department for Allied Products Corporation after 28 years. He was a member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church where he was a member of the choir forever. He was also a member of the Studebaker Male Chorus. Over the years, he was involved in many community organizations, including, K of C, United Way, St. Joseph County Scholarship Foundation and the “Romeo” Club (Retired Old Men Eating Out). Mr. Simmermeyer served his country with the United States Army. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 24, 2002 at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church. Rev. Terry Fisher officiating. Interment will follow at Highland cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, June 23rd, at the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, and one hour prior to services in the church on Monday. A rosary service will be given at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Maurice G. Stayton

July 29, 1921 - August 2, 2002

Maurice G. Stayton, 81 years old, residing on Ash Road, Granger, passed away at 5:42 a.m. on Friday, August 2, 2002 at the Elkhart General Hospital. Mr. Stayton was born on July 29, 1921 in Mishawaka to the late Glenn Oliver and Mabel Louise (Holm) Stayton. He has been a lifelong area resident. On November 30, 1941 in South Bend, he married the former Iva Fay Miller who preceded in death on March 2, 2000 after 59 years of marriage. Mr. Stayton was also preceded in death by one sister, Janis Hunsberger, and one brother, Barny Stayton. Mr. Stayton is survived by his three daughters, Judy (Gary) Secor of Elkhart, Sharon (Chuck, Sr.) Sowders of Mishawaka, and Debbie (Tim) Kling of Elkhart; one son, Jerry (Becky) Stayton of Osceola; ten grandchildren, Kelley Nease, Shelley Dietz, Stacey Buczolich, Jill Deckard, Jerry Stayton, Jr., Jennifer Webb, Roy Webb, II, Michele Jennings, Adam Kling, and Alex Kling; nine great grandchildren, Zachary Nease, Garrett Nease, Jacob Dietz, Alec Dietz, Paige Dietz, Jared Deckard, Jordon Deckard, Dean Stayton, and Alec Jennings “A.J.” Schinider; one sister, Lenora Elder of Plymouth; and three brothers, Oliver Stayton of Graham, WA, Russell Stayton of Elkhart, and Cleo Stayton of Bristol. Maurice retired from Vincent Bach Corporation in 1985. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Elkhart and UAW #364 in Elkhart. He enjoyed his retirement playing euchre, golf, and tinkering with cars. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Maurice was greatly loved and will be missed by his family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2002 at the Palmer Funeral Home, 1109 Lincolnway West, Osceola. Rev. Daniel Boes, pastor of Twin Branch Bible Church, and Rev. Dave Stauffer, assistant pastor of New Life Baptist Church, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Fairview cemetery, Mishawaka. Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, August 4th, at the Palmer Funeral Home, Osceola. Contributions in memory of Maurice G. WILLIDEAN A. COHEN, AGE 84, FORMERLY OF COLONY COURT, MISHAWAKA, INDIANA, DIED AT 2:30 P.M. SATURDAY, AUGUST 3, 2002 IN FOUNTAINVIEW PLACE OF MISHAWAKA. SHE WAS BORN ON APRIL 12, 1918 IN ROCHESTER, INDIANA TO JAMES AND ZELLA (BARBER) GREER. HER PARENTS AND TWO SISTERS, DOROTHY KNIGHT AND MARY VANGUNDY PRECEDED IN DEATH. ON JANUARY 20, 1939 IN SOUTH BEND SHE MARRIED SAMUEL COHEN, HE PRECEDED IN DEATH ON JULY 26, 1998. WILLIDEAN RETIRED FROM INWOODS STORE IN SOUTH BEND IN 1985. SURVIVING ARE; TWO DAUGHTERS AND THEIR HUSBANDS, NANCY AND FRED WILMA OF MISHAWAKA, IN., AND PAM AND MARK MILLER OF NORTH LIBERTY, IN., TWO SONS AND THEIR WIVES, DENNY AND JAN COHEN OF NEW CARLISLE, IN., AND BARRY AND KIM COHEN OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA. ALSO SURVIVING ARE FIFTEEN GRANDCHILDREN AND EIGHTEEN GREAT GRANDCHILDREN FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE AT 11:00 A.M. Walter H. Engle

July 4, 1923 - February 16, 2003

Walter Harry Engle, age 79, of Loughlin Dr., Mishawaka, passed away at 8:06pm, Sunday, February 16, 2003 in his residence. On July 4, 1923 in South Bend, Walter was born to the late Harry H. & Marie (Gelnet) Engle. On September 18, 1943 in Harlingen, TX he married Virginia Belle Hinz, she passed away on September 11, 1982 after thirty-nine years of marriage. Walter served his country with the United States Army Air Corp. during WWII and in 1984; he retired from the South Bend Tribune, where he was employed as a printer. Walter was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. Survivors of Walter include his five children; Dallas (Joyce) Engle of Ephrata, PA; Rev. Darrell (Dianne) Engle of Plum Branch, SC; Dolores (Robert) Rast of Mishawaka, Kenneth (Lois) Engle of Aiken, SC; and Kevin (Charline) Engle of Wooster, OH., seventeen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a sister; Mary Ransberger of Mishawaka. Funeral services for Walter will be held at 10:00am, Friday, February 21, 2003, in Palmer Funeral Home, 1109 Lincolnway West, Osceola. Rev. Doug Erickson, pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Thursday, from 4:00-8:00 pm. In Lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contributions be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church, 59220 Bremen Highway, Mishawaka, IN 46544.
