David Cox

June 15,2004 ALEXANDRIA- David Cox, 91, of Alexandria went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, June 14,2004 at the Alexandria Care Center after an extended illness.

Dave was born in Carmel, IN on Dec. 23, 1912 and was the son of Archie F. and Mary (Brown) Cox. On Oct. 10, 1938 he married Phyllis L. Lamb.

Dave was the founder and retired owner of Cox’s Supermarket and Gift Shop in Alexandria and Connersville.

For over 50 years he was an active member of Union Chapel Community Church, Summitville. Dave served on the Board of Directors of Taylor University, Alexandria School Board and the board of Liberty Christian School. With his wife, they served as missionaries in Japan and Mexico. He was a member of the Hall of Fall of the American Shetland Pony Association. Dave was always very active in community functions and charities in the Alexandria area

A loving Father and Husband he leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 65 years, Phyllis, three sons; Kay (Wife-Sue) Cox, Phillip Cox, and John (Wife-Beverly) Cox all of Alexandria. Four grandchildren; Angela (Tony) Folkner, Erica (Neal) Brown, Lance Cox, Jessica (Charles) Cox and six great-grandchildren; Tony, Josh, Jacob, Josephine, Kylie, Benjamin.

Two brothers, Homer Cox and Glen Cox and two sisters, Alice Kerr and Jessie Dawson, preceded Dave in death.

Funeral services will at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in the Union Chapel Community Church, 14950 N. 100W, Summitville with Rev. Mike Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria. Friends may call at Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria, on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday one hour prior to the services at the church.

The Family requests memorials be made to Union Chapel Community Church or the Gideons in care of the funeral home.

Loren E. Davidson

Loren E. Davidson, 79, of rural Summitville died Monday in Community Hospital after a brief illness.

Loren was born in Van Buren Twp. on March 3, 1925 and was the son of Frank H. and Rebecca E. (Benefiel) Davidson. After the death of his parents, Loren lived and was raised by his sister Lola. On September 30, 1944 he married Estella M. Carr, who survives.

Loren retired from Delco Remy after 37 ˝ years of service. In addition to his employment at Delco Remy he worked the family farm until after his retirement.

Loren was a member of the Summitville Baptist Church and Summitville Lodge #691 F&AM. He also was a member of the Frankton & Tipton Antique Tractor Clubs. Loren was avid antique tractor collector and especially like the Minneapolis-Molene tractors.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years, are 2 sons; Wayne E. (wife-Emily) Davidson-Summitville, Raymond (wife-Cathy) Davidson-Elwood; 2 daughters; Darlene (husband-Bob) Murphy-Dandridge, TN, Irene (husband-Lee) Hollingsworth-Summitville. 1 Brother; Frank (wife-Jean) Davidson, Jr.-Stevensville, Montana. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; Christopher Davidson, Erik Davidson, Jeremy Davidson, Carrie Smith, Joshua Marciniak, Shawn Hollingsworth, Adam L. Hollingsworth, Seth D. Hollingsworth, Rachel Gambrel, Clint Davidson, Cheyenne Davidson and six great-grandchildren.

His parents, a sister, Lola Retherford, a brother, Roy Davidson and a grandson, Kyle E. Davidson, precede Loren in death.

Funeral services for Loren will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria with Revs. Mark Joyner and Mike Adams officiating. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The request memorials be made the Alexandria ERF Pantry in care of the funeral home.

Harry L. Johnson

Harry Lee Johnson, 39, of Anderson died Sunday, July 18, 2004 in I.U. Medical Center, Indianapolis after an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 7, 1965 in Anderson, Indiana and was the son of Danny L. and Susan (Boyer) Johnson who survive.

Harry was a former employee of the Hopewell Center, Anderson and was an avid NASCAR fan and a huge supporter of Jeff Gordon. Harry attended Alexandria schools and was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church, Anderson.

Surviving in addition to his parents are 2 sisters; Julie (Husband-John) Bivens-Anderson and Joni (Husband-Chris) Allen-Alexandria; 2 nephews, Brandon Key and Colin Allen , 1 niece, Brittney Allen. Paternal grandparents, Jimmie and Bonita Johnson-Alexandria, his special friend and NASCAR buddy, Tom Lesco-Anderson. Also surviving are several Aunts, Uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Alva and Alice Boyer.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at 10:00 am in Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria with Rev. Rob Mc Illwain officiating. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

The requests memorials to Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in care of the funeral home.

James S. Shewmaker

ALEXANDRIA - James S. Shewmaker, 82, of Alexandria died Wednesday, February 11, 2004 in Community Hospital after a extended illness.

Jim was born on Oct. 20, 1921 in Rush Co. and was the son of Thomas and Love (Preston) Shewmaker. On Dec. 21, 1962 he married Margaret L. Benge who preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2004.

He was retired from the John Manville Co. in Alexandria.

Surviving are 2 sons; William (Phyllis) Vannatta-San Antonio, TX, Edward (Brenda) Vannatta-Anderson. A sister; Elizabeth Hazelbaker-Anderson. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Shawn Everage, Andy Vannatta, Gary Vannatta, Jeff Vannatta, Victor Gorea, Jimmy Vannatta, Chris Vannatta and 5 great-grandchildren; Travis Vannatta, Rebeca Vannatta, Keisha Vannatta, Trevor Vannatta, Brianna Vannatta.

His parents and a daughter, Patricia A. Vannatta 4 brothers, William Shewmaker, Lewis Shewmaker, Cecil Shewmaker, Delbert Shewmaker; 1 sister, Isabelle Ball preceded Jim in death.

Funeral services will be Saturday, February 14, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria with Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 13, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

James A Rowland

James A. Rowland, Sr., 81, of Alexandria died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 in Community Hospital, Anderson after an extended illness.

Jim was born in St. Charles, VA. on Jan. 30, 1923 and was the son of William M. and Amanda J. (Jesse) Rowland. On May 8, 1948 he married Ruby Bishop who survives.

Jim was retired from Delco-Remy, Anderson and served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army.

Jim was avid coon hunter and fisherman. He loved to work in his garden and watch it grow. He was member of the United States Trotting Assn.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are 2 sons, James A. (Marilyn) Rowland, Jr.-Alexandria and Michael Rowland-Sheridan, Indiana. One sister, Reva (Walker) Cress-Alexandria. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. in Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria with Rev. Jeremy Rowland officiating. Burial will follow in Vinson Memorial Park Cemetery, Summitville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, July 16, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

John Vernon Mart

ANDERSON- John Vernon Mart, 80, of rural Anderson died Tuesday, March 2, 2004 at his residence after an extended illness.

John was born in Grant Co. on October 20, 1923 and was the son of Russell and Florence (Payne) Mart. On June 6, 1949 he married Beverly Perry.

John was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army and he retired from General Motors in 1980.

John attended the Wesleyan Church in Anderson.

Surviving is his wife Beverly, 2 Sons, Larry W. Mart and Danny N. Mart; 1 Daughter, Debra Baxter and 3 Sisters, Martha Chapel, Mary Jean Finch, Janice Jakeman. Also surviving are 9 Grandchildren and one Great-Grandchild.

There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Jimmie W. Johnson

ALEXANDRIA – Jimmie W. Johnson, 83, of Alexandria died Thursday in the Summit Convalescent Center, Summitville after an extended illness.

Jimmie was born in Indianapolis on Jan. 4, 1921 and was the son
of Harry and Pauline (Collins) Johnson.

Jimmie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Alexandria and Alexandria Lodge #235 of F& AM. and Alexander Bright Post #87 of the American Legion. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the Army Air Corp. He spent most of his enlisted time on Tinian Island in the South Pacific. He retired from the Alexandria Fire Dept. after 25 years of service. During his tenure with the Fire Dept. he served as Fire Chief.

After his retirement Jimmie spent most of his time fishing and became an avid golfer.

His parents, a brother, Robert Johnson, and grandson, Harry Johnson, preceded him in death.

His survivors include his wife of 62 years, Bonita (Bonnie) (Delong)Johnson, a son, Danny (wife-Susie) Johnson-Frankton, a daughter, Nancy Paddock-Alexandria, a Son-in-law, Robert Paddock-Alexandria, a sister, Ann Fowler-Stanton,MI, Sister-in-law, Martha DeLong-Summitville. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Angela (Scott) Carroll-Parker, Bobby (Amy) Paddock, Julie (John)Bivens, Joni (Chris) Allen.; 10 great-grandchildren, Brenna Baledge, Aaron Baledge, Suzie Bivens, Brandon Key, Brittany Key, Colin Allen, Ryan Robert Paddock, Larissa Paddock, Savannah Paddock, Casey Parker. Also surviving are several Nieces and Nephews and Cousins.

Funeral services will Monday in the First Baptist Church of Alexandria at 10:30 am with Rev. Cliff Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday at Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. and on Monday at the church one hour prior to the services.

Enroute to the Cemetery, the funeral procession will pass by the Alexandria Fire Station where the Alexandria Fire Dept. will give an Honorary Salute to their fallen comrade.

The family requests memorials are made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund in care of the funeral home.

Margaret L. Shewmaker

ALEXANDRIA - Margaret L. Shewmaker, 83, of Alexandria died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004 at her residence after extended illness.

Margaret was born on September 6, 1920 in Alexandria and was the daughter of George and Ethel (Silvey) Benge. On December 21, 1962 she married James S. Shewmaker who survies. Margaret was a retired homemaker and a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Blessed Savior, Alexandria.

Surviving in addition to her husband is 2 sons, William (wife-Phyllis) Vannatta-San Antonio, TX, Edward (wife-Brenda) Vannatta-Anderson. 2 brothers, Harry Benge-Jonesboro, George Benge, Jr.-Fairmont; 4 sisters, Leona Auler, Shirley Brotherton both of Alexandria and Betty Mottwieller-Elwood, Murlia Remmington-Richmond.

Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Shawn Everage, Andy Vannatta, Gary Vannatta, Jeff Vannatta, Victor Gorea, Jimmy Vannatta, Chris Vannatta and 5 Great-grandchildren, Travis Vannatta, Rebeca Vannatta, Keisha Vannatta, Trevor Vannatta, Brianna Vannatta.

Her parents and a daughter, Patricia A. Vannatta, preceded Margaret in death.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 in Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Matthew Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

William R. Morris

ALEXANDRIA – William R. (Bill) Morris, 64 of Alexandria died at his residence after a brief illness.

Bill was born in Alexandria on July 15, 1940 and was the son of Homer and Ada Marie (Frix) Morris. He was employed by Hi-Top Enterprises as a handyman.

Surviving are two brothers, Terry W. Morris and Earl L. Morris.

Cremation has been chosen. There will no public services.

Whetsel Funeral Service has been entrusted with the final arrangements.

Noah Paul Eugene Ferguson

ALEXANDRIA - Noah Paul Eugene Ferguson, infant son of Jerry and Jodi (Carmine) Ferguson died shortly after birth on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004 in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Surviving in addition to his parents are 2 sisters, Taylor Paige Sanders and Bailey Orion Ferguson both at home. Paternal Grandmother, Donna Ferguson, Maternal Grandparents, Buddy and Debbie Carmine.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in Babyland at Park View Cemetery, Alexandria. There will be no visitation.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Whetsel Funeral Service, Alexandria.
