Lifelong resident of Marshall County until two years ago, Roger W. Swanson, 56, 2121 Spalding Drive, Maryville, Tennessee, died on March 7, 2003. He had been ill with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia for ten days.

Roger was born in Plymouth, Indiana on October 19, 1947. He was the son of Roy E. and Emily Waclaw Swanson. His mother preceded him in death. He graduated from Tyner High School, attended Valparaiso University and graduated with a business degree from Indiana/South Bend in 1971.

He served in the Vietnam War as a member of the U. S. Army from 1966-1971.

He was the Director of the United States Golf Academy for 29 years, from 1971-2000. There would be as many as 4, 000 students a season under his leadership at the Academy, a division of the Swan Lake Golf Resort, which was a Swanson family enterprise until it was sold in 2000.

Roger was a former member of Sunrise Chapel, where he was an adult Sunday School teacher.

He was employed in Maryville at the Smith Mortuary, selling prepaid funeral plans and serving as their resident guidance counselor.

On July 31, 1971, in Plymouth, Roger and Linda Bailey were married . She survives. Also surviving are their children and their families; son, David Swanson, Indianapolis, Indiana; daughter, Melinda and husband James Krass, Walkerton, Indiana; grandsons, Noah Swanson, Aidan and0 Elliot Krass; father and step-mother, Roy and Dorothy Swanson, Argos, Indiana; sisters, Lynette (Anthony) Kross and Felicia (Mark) Batman, all of Plymouth.

A funeral service for Roger was held on March 10, 2003, with a military service on March 11, 2003. Burial was in the Tennessee Military cemetery, Knoxville, Tennessee. Col. Michael Matz, a life long friend, presented a folded American flag to Roger's widow, Linda.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the Swan Lake Conference Center, 5203 Plymouth-LaPorte Trail, Plymouth, Indiana. Memorial gifts, in his memory, may be given to Terry Martin, a family missionary friend or to the St. Jude's Leukemia Fund.

Van Gilder Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Manfred (Mike) Blum, 67, of 11815 Lawndale Avenue, Plymouth, passed away Monday, March 3, 2003 at 2:26 AM in Saint Joseph RMC Plymouth Campus, Plymouth, Indiana.

Mike was born on June 3, 1935 in Frankfurt, Germany. He was a refugee of Poland and Germany. He came to the United States when he was six months old. Mike moved to Plymouth from Chicago in 1989.

Mike married Jean K. Krupowicz on December 18, 1999 in Plymouth, Indiana. He was previously married to Joyce Gordon on August 6, 1960 in Chicago, Illinois. Joyce passed away on June 17, 1994.

Mike was retired from the Chicago Fire Department Engine Co. 97, 80, Squad 5, and was 10th Ward Precinct Captain. He served his country in the Army during The Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Plymouth Moose Lodge #741 and of the Saint Michael's Catholic Church Plymouth, Indiana.

He is survived by wife, Jean Blum of Plymouth; a daughter, Barbara Williams of South Bend Indiana; a son, Richard Blum of Indianapolis, Indiana; a step-daughter, Jeannie Lewis-Levett of Plymouth; a step-son, Bernard Krupowicz of Naperville, Illinois; and a sister in Florida. Also surviving are five grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation or service. Cremation is taking place. Van Gilder Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Rena M. Conner, 85, of 9802 Redwood Road, Plymouth, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2003 at 10:35 PM at Miller's Merry Manor in Plymouth, Indiana.

She was born on January 6, 1918 in Ottertail Township, Minnesota, to Joel and Emma (Buntrock) Miles. Her family moved to Plymouth around 1933.

She married Oscar F. Conner on August 22, 1948 and he passed away on September 3, 1980.

She was a seamstress for the Menser Industry of Plymouth, Indiana.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen and Rick Conley of Plymouth, Indiana; a step-daughter, Eloise Good of Argos, Indiana; a step-son, Ralph Conner of Titusville, Florida; a brother, Lester Miles of Battlelake, Minnesota; 3 grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one infant son and two sisters.

Services will be held Monday, February 24, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, Indiana with Rev. Ronald Humphrey offciating. Burial will be at the New Oak Hill cemetery on Monday, February 24, 2003.

Friends may call Sunday, February 23, 2003 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Van Gilder Funeral Home 300 West Madison Street in Plymouth.

Luella Wilcox Houghton, 72, of 222 Parkview Street, Plymouth, passed away Sunday, February 16, 2003 at 8:08 AM at St. Joseph RMC Plymouth Campus, Plymouth, Indiana.

She was born on February 22, 1930 in Bourbon, Indiana to Nicholas and Viola (Bean) Baltes.

She married Aaron Wilcox on June 29, 1947 and he passed away on August 18, 1975. She then married William Houghton on December 17, 1976 and he passed away on January 27, 1981.

She was a past member of the Woman of the Moose. She worked for Hehr International Inc. for twenty years and retired in 1990.

She is survived by daughters, Vickie and Kenneth Juhasz of Plymouth, Indiana and Kristine and David Spaid of Linden, Tennessee; sons, Robert and Rose Wilcox of Warsaw, Indiana and Thomas and Vicky Wilcox of Plymouth, Indiana; brothers, John Baltes of Florida and Jim Baltes of Georgia; grandchildren, Lisa Taylor of Champaign, Illinois, Rodd Spaid of Linden, Tennessee, Teresa McGuire of Syrcause, Indiana, Nicholas Laffoon of Plymouth, Indiana, Israel Wilcox of Bourbon, Indiana, Erica Wilcox of Warsaw, Indiana and Stephanie Wilcox of Warsaw, Indiana. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at 10:30 AM at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, Indiana with Rev. Charles Krieg officiating. Burial will be at the New Oak Hill cemetery in Plymouth, Indiana.

Robert Emerson Orr, 87, of 805 Baker Street, Plymouth, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at 9:40 AM at St. Joseph RMC, Plymouth Campus in Plymouth.

He was born on July 8, 1915 in Edinbrugh, Indiana to Estel and Katie (White) Orr.

He married G. Lucile Pyle on September 23, 1935 in LaPaz Indiana. She passed away on July 7, 1998.

He worked at R R Donnelly in the office as a time keeper. On February 14, 1950 he started Orr's Flowers. He served his country during WWII in the Army and was a member of the American Legion Post #424 of Bourbon, Indiana. Emerson was also a member of the Plymouth Country Club and was an avid golf player.

He is survived by sons, Robert and Christine Orr of Huntsville, Alabama, Mike and Jeannie Orr of Plymouth, Indiana, and Pat and Sheri Orr of Plymouth, Indiana. Also surviving is a sister, Mildred Blake of Orlando, Florida; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, February 15, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, Indiana, with Rev. Peter Warlow officiating. Burial will be at the New Oak Hill cemetery Plymouth, Indiana.

Evelyn B. Bradley, 87, of 8488 Southeast Swan Avenue, Hobe Sound, Florida, passed away Friday, February 7, 2003 at 4:00 AM at the Martin Memorial Hospital in Stuart Florida.

She was born on June 12, 1915 in Plymouth to Ora Franklin and Carrie (Grube) Wright.

She married Ellsworth C. Bradley on November 12, 1931 and he passed away on October 12, 1997. Evelyn moved to Hobe Sound, Florida in 1998.

She was active in the Republican Party during the elections and helped put together the idea of Pidco. They were a charter member of the Marshall County Pathfinder Campers and members of the Marshall County Historical Society, and the Marshall County Pioneer Family.

She is survived by sons, Stanley and Neva Bradley of Hobe Sound, Florida, Conrad and Cathy Badley of Palm City, Florida, Neil and Terry Bradley of Plymouth, Indiana; sister-in-law, Jessie Holland of Plymouth, Indiana; several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith; two infant brothers; and a half-brother Russell M. Wright.

Services will be held Friday, February 14, 2003 at 11:00 AM at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth, Indiana, 46563, with Rev. Steven Resner officiating. Burial will be at the New Oak Hill cemetery.

SCOTT J. HOLLETT FEBRUARY 25, 1922 TO FEBRUARY 7, 2003

Scott J. Hollett Sr. 80, of 10025 North Turkey Creek Road #8, Syracuse, Indiana, passed away Friday, February 7, 2003 at 2:21 p.m. at his home.

Scott J. Hollett, Sr., was born February 25, 1922 to Clarence Roe Hollett and Tillie Winona Scott Hollett in Plymouth, Indiana. On July 13, 1941, he married Helen Marie Brugh. Their children are: Scott J. Hollett and Martha, South Bend, Indiana, Jeffrey L. Hollett, Mesquite, Texas, Bruce H. Hollett and Melody, Frederick R. Hollett and Julianne, and Georgia Sue (Susie) Shez, Plymouth, Indiana. There are 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He is survived by one sister, Elizabeth L. Hollett-Kennedy, California. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother, Clarence R., sister, Mary Margaret Jackson, granddaughter, Debra Lynn Hollett, and great- granddaughter, Victoria Marie Palmitessa.

During his lifetime he served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the founder of Scotty's Hydraulic Service. He was officer and Charter Member of the first and second Elks Club in Plymouth, Indiana. He served as President of the Plymouth Improvement Association. He also served as President of the Equipment Service Association and was a member of the Order of the Arrow, in Boy Scouts of America. He escorted the Boy Scouts to Plymouth on the Philmont Trail and took a group of Boy Scouts to Cowie Lake, Canada. He has been a 3 Star General of the Cowie Lake Speckled Trout Club and was an Umpire for Little League.

Scotty started the business in 1957, in the basement of their home, at 900 North Walnut Street. In 1958, he moved the business to their garage. His first employees were his sons, Jeff, Bruce, and Fred, and his wife was his Secretary- Treasurer. As the business grew, in 1969 he purchased a building at 1204 North Center Street (the old Bergman Dry Cleaning Business). His nephew Orley W. Hollett came to work for him, too. In 1973, there was an addition made to the building on North Center Street and more employees were hired. In 1969, the business was incorporated as Hollett Enterprises, Inc. In late 1979, he built the building located at 1200 Markley Drive, and moved into this building in early 1980. He retired in 1984 and his wife retired from the business in 1993. Presently managing the business are his sons, Fred and Bruce, and his daughter, Susie Shez. He moved to Syracuse from Plymouth when he retired.

Services will be held Wednesday, February 12, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Van Gilder Funeral Home 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, Indiana with the Rev. Steve Mullin Officiating. Burial will be in the New Oak Hill cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Van Gilder Funeral Home in Plymouth.

Paul Nelson Truman

1923-2003

Paul Nelson Truman 79, of P.O. Box 413, Plymouth passed away at 7:00 P.M. on February 7, 2003 in Walnut Creek Nursing Home. He was born on June 9, 1923 in Columbia City, Indiana to Everett and Mazie Truman. In 1926 the Truman family moved to Plymouth where Mr. Truman graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941. The following autumn he attended lndiana University as a music major.

Like many of the sons of his generation, however Mr. Truman's academic career ended abruptly with America's entry into the Second World War. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant after joining the Army R.O.T.C. program at Indiana, he reported to O.C.S. at Fort Benning, Georgia in the winter of 1942. After a brief sojourn in England, Mr. Truman fought on the frontlines of the European continent, distinguishing himself in battle as the Company Commander of Co. K, 104th Infantry, 26th Division and later as a Task Force Commander in the 12th Corps, Third Army during the Siegfried breakthrough. His wartime decorations include the Silver Star and Battle Stars for three campaigns.

After the German surrender in 1945, Capt. Truman commanded the food and supply section of the Upper Austrian Military Government. It was there that he metthe love of his life, Inga Megomae. They were married in Plymouth, Indiana on June 15, 1947.

Though offered a regular army commission by Congressional appointment, Mr. Truman opted to join the family automobile business, Truman Motor Sales, Inc., after the war. His military life continued, as he activated and organized Indiana National Guard, Co. E, 293rd Infantry, 38th Division in 1948 serving as the Commanding Officer until 1950. On Veterans Day, November 11, 2002, Mr. Truman was honored as the Veteran of the Year by the Plymouth School Corporation, in a touching and much appreciated convocation before the student body of Plymouth High School.

Throughout his life Mr. Truman served Plymouth and Marshall County as an active community leader. His activities included the following: Treasurer, Marshall County Republican Central Committee, 1962-66; President, Plymouth Industrial Development Corporation, 1968; Member and President, Plymouth Community School Board of Trustees, 1978-84; Associate Director, United Fund; Member and Post Bugler, VFW Post 1162; Member, Plymouth High School building committee, Phase II; Member, Plymouth Arts Commission. As a lifelong musician, he was also a proud member of the I. U. Marching 100 and the Plymouth-LaPorte Marching Sabres.

Surviving are his wife, Inga; two children, Krista (Bill) Megomae Furry and Lawrence Everett Truman; five grandchildren, Gregory (Katie) Truman Furry, Megan (Jack) Nicole Elsey, William Edward Furry, Trevor Kress Truman, and Kayle Kress Truman; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 11, 2003 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at the First United Methodist Church, 400 North Michigan Street Plymouth, Indiana.

Services will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at 12:00 noon at the First united Methodist Church with the Rev. Dean Fager officiating. Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery. Military graveside services will be by V.F.W. Post 1162 Plymouth.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to the Plymouth Arts Commission at 321 North Water Street, Plymouth, Indiana.

Van Gilder Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
