Carolyn F. Strong, age 64, of 1202 Sycamore Street, Plymouth, Indiana, passed away at 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2008, at her home.

Carolyn was born on January 15, 1944, in Princeton, Kentucky, to Roy and Millie (Taylor) Kirk. Carolyn and William "Bill" Strong were united in marriage on August 15, 1969 in Plymouth, Indiana. Bill preceded Carolyn in death on November 1, 2003. She was a retired driving examiner with the State of Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles being employed from 1976 to 1989.

Carolyn is survived by her son, James Strong of Plymouth; her daughters, Oletta Webb of Plymouth, Lori (Jeff) Powers of Plymouth, and Julie Moyer of Arizona; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 27, 2008, at 1:00 p.m., at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, with Chaplin Thomas Padberg officiating.

A time of visiting with the Strong family, will be on Monday, October 27, 2008, from Noon until time of service at 1:00 p.m., at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563.

Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 112 South Center Street, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563.

Cynthia (Cindee) Carlson

Cynthia Carlson, age 60, of 912 North Michigan Street, Plymouth, Indiana, passed away Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 6:10 a.m., at Saint Joseph Regional Medical, South Bend, Indiana.

Cynthia was born, in Plymouth, on October 16, 1948, to George and Teresa (Hartman) Lemar. On January 12, 1985, Cynthia and John Carlson were married at the Plymouth Wesleyan Church.

Cindee was a member of the Plymouth Wesleyan Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. in Culver, Indiana. She had worked at the Culver Academies in the computer department and had been a child care provider.

Cindee is survived by her husband, John Carlson; her daughters, Stephanie Lynn (Randy) Schoolman of Plymouth, Jennifer (Brad) Hoop of Indianapolis, Indiana, Julie (Gabe) Blissmer of Plymouth; her sons, Cristian Lemar (Amy) May of Plymouth and Jerry (Stephanie) Carlson of Kouts, Indiana; her sister, Anna (Don) Neher of Culver; her brothers, David (Marilyn) Lemar of Washington and Jerry Lemar of Florida. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at 11:00 a.m., at the Plymouth Wesleyan Church, 11203 South Michigan Road, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563, with the Rev. John Branch officiating.

A time of visiting, with the Carlson Family, will be on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563, and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Church on Wednesday, prior to the funeral. The Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. will hold a service at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, in the Funeral Home.

Burial will be in the Swedish cemetery, Donaldson, Indiana.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Plymouth Wesleyan Church.

Shirley Keyser
Born in South Bend, Indiana on Jul. 21, 1938

Shirley R. Keyser, age 70, of 221 Lake Ave, Plymouth, Indiana, passed away at 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at the BroMenn Hospital in Normal, Illinois, following a brief battle with cancer.

Shirley was born on July 21, 1938, in South Bend, Indiana, to Foster and Edith (Seybold) Whiteman. On December 22, 1956, Shirley and Lamarr "Pete" Keyser were united in marriage in South Bend. Shirley was a member of the Tri-Valley Baptist Church of Downs, Illinois. She enjoyed bowling on several ladies bowling leagues, while her health allowed. Shirley was a well known Avon Lady, in the Plymouth area, for over 30 years.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Linda Weedling of Bloomington, Illinois; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Roy and Lavon Whiteman of Bloomington, Indiana.

Funeral services, for Shirley, will be held on Monday, October 20, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, with Pastor Darrell Cardwell officiating. Burial will be in Fair cemetery, LaPaz, Indiana.

A time of visiting, with the Keyser Family, will be on Sunday, October 19, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563.

The Keyser family would like for memorial contributions to be given to the Marshall County Cancer Association, Post Office Box 895, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563.

Arnold (Dick) Umbaugh

Arnold "Dick" Umbaugh, age 84, of 625 Oakhill Avenue, Plymouth, Indiana, passed away at 12:36 a.m. on Friday, October 10, 2008, at the Catherine Kasper Life Care Center in Donaldson, Indiana.

Dick was born on October 2, 1924, in Argos, Indiana, to Cecil and Esther (Cool) Umbaugh. He attended Argos School, for 12 years, graduating in the Class of 1943.

In May of 1943, Dick joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country. He received his basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois. He served aboard the U.S.S. Granville Transport Ship, as Pharmacist Mate 1/class, in the South Pacific, for two and a half years.

On April 21, 1946, Dick and the former, Berniece Samuelson, were united in marriage at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Donaldson.

Dick entered Hanover College in June of 1946, where he majored in Chemistry and Biology. He graduated from Hanover, in June of 1950. He attended one year of Medical School at Indiana University.

He returned to Plymouth and was a Lab Tech at Parkview Hospital. He later joined Investors Diversified Service and was a Financial Advisor for 28 years, retiring in 1985. Dick and Berniece moved to Saint Germain, Wisconsin, for eight years, where Dick enjoyed his hobby of fishing. They returned to Plymouth in 1993.

Dick was a Boy Scout, in his youth, and as an adult he took on the roll of Scout Leader. He was also very active in his church. He taught Sunday School and was on the church council many times. He was a member Rotary Club and the American Legion. Dick enjoyed spending time with his family.

Dick is survived by his wife, Berniece; their sons, Mark and Suzanne Umbaugh of Argos, Indiana, David and Vainca Umbaugh of Pebble Beach, California, and Dan and Barbara Umbaugh of Carmel, Indiana; his brother, Gerald Umbaugh of Kansas; his sister, Ercell and Morris Zink of South Bend, Indiana; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; Cecil and Esther Umbaugh; his sister, Lois Weidner; and his granddaughter, Sarah Jane Umbaugh

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2008, with one hour visitation prior to service, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Donaldson, with the Rev. Dennis Wenzel officiating.

A time of visiting with the Umbaugh family, will be on Monday, October 13, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563.

Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery, Donaldson.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the World Gospel Mission.

Ernest A. Ross
Born in Momence, Illinois on Feb. 3, 1926
passed away Oct. 8, 2008 and resided in Plymouth, IN.

Ernest A. Ross, age 83, of 400 West Washington Street, Plymouth, Indiana, passed away at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, at his home.

Ernest was born on February 3, 1926, in Momence, Illinois, to Charles and Iva (Poisel) Ross.

Ernest proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He was a member of the Plymouth V.F.W. and American Legion Post #27.

Ernest is survived by his daughters, Debra K. Holland of Walkerton, Indiana and Sara Jane and Jon Wentzel of Plymouth; his sons, James and Sue Ross of Plymouth and John and Mary Ross of Plymouth; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Ernest was preceded in death by three grandchildren; his sister, Bernice Withers; and his brothers, Howard Ross, Charles Ross, and Frank Ross.

The VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563, has been entrusted with the arrangements. According to Ernest's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral services.

Howard Wilhelm

Howard S. Wilhelm, age 92, of 420 West Marshall Street, Garden Court, Argos, Indiana, passed away at 9:30 a.m., on Monday, October 6, 2008, at Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester, Indiana.

Howard was born on June 5, 1916, in Argos, to William F. and Cora (Jefferies) Wilhelm. He had been employed at the Eley Sawmill, in Argos. Howard proudly served his country, during WWII, in the United States Army.

Howard is survived by his sisters, Mary and Donald Hayn of Argos and Dorothy and Bill Graham of Peru, Indiana. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME has been entrusted with the arrangements. A memorial service will be held at the Garden Court Conference Room, in Argos, on Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will be in the Maple Grove cemetery, Argos, at 11:30 a.m., following the memorial service.

Robert Selner
Born in Wakarusa, Indiana on Dec. 13, 1924

Robert G. Selner, age 83, of 120 Windsor Drive, Churubusco, Indiana, passed away at 9:56 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2008, at his home.

Robert was born on December 13, 1924, in Wakarusa, Indiana, to Emery and Gertrude (Birk) Selner. On June 11, 1949, Robert married the former Shirley A. Pittman, in Nappanee, Indiana. Shirley passed away on December 16, 2006. Together they raised their six children. They moved from the Plymouth area, to the Churubusco area in 1972. Robert had been employed by the Studebaker Company, in South Bend, Indiana and retired from the E.H. Tepe Company of Fort Wayne, Indiana, as the Stockroom Manager. Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He enjoyed camping with his family and friends. Robert was a member of the Churubusco Lions Club, Campers Association of Indiana, and was a past President of the Marshall County Pathfinders.

Robert is survived by his daughters, Sue and Tom Kowalski of Mishawaka, Indiana, Linda Martin of Lakeville, Indiana, and Cindy and Eugene Michael of Fort Wayne, Indiana; his sons, Tom and Sharon Selner of Plymouth and Bruce and D.J. Selner of Ashley, Indiana; nine granddaughters; five grandsons; three great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters; his sisters, Mildred Miller and Nancy Kindly; and his brothers, Charles Selner and George Selner. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his daughter, Penny Sue; his grandson; and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. David L. Detamore officiating.

A time of visiting with the Selner family will be on Friday, October 10, 2008, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, October 11, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the VAN GILDER FUNERAL HOME, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth, Indiana, 46563.

Burial will be in New Oak Hill cemetery, Plymouth.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association, 7363 East 21st Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46219.

Arline Johnson
Born on Nov. 24, 1919

Arline Inga Johnson passed away on Friday, October 3, 2008, at her home, in Plymouth, Indiana.

Arline was born on November 24, 1919, in Roseau, Minnesota, to George and Signe Lawmaster. Arline married the love of her life, Ingwald R. Johnson, on November 21, 1943, in Plymouth. Ingwald preceded her in death in 1967.

Arline's parents, George and Signe Lawmaster, a Swedish immigrant, met and married in Minnesota, while George was homesteading. Three children, Willie, Barney, and Arline, were born there. Later the family moved to their farm in Tippecanoe, Indiana, and three more children were born, Walter, Ollie, and Evelyn.

While growing up, Arline loved animals, especially her horse, Rex, and her dog, Sheila. Arline always accompanied her mother to sell produce at the Farmer's Market in South Bend, Indiana. She graduated from Tippecanoe High School and was a beautiful redhead.

While riding her horse Rex, she passed a log cabin, in Tippecanoe, where she met her future husband, Inwald "Snuffy" R. Johnson. They fell in love and were married on November 21, 1943, in Plymouth.

Ingwald and Arline had three children, Ingwald W. Johnson, Mike Johnson, and Kristina Johnson.

They have wonderful memories of all the aunts, uncles, and cousins gathering every Sunday at George and Signe's farm, for dinner, and then playing in the woods, barn, and along the Tippecanoe River.

Arline enjoyed driving for Real Rider Services. She made many friends with the passengers and truly cared about them. In later years, she spent a lot of sunny days out in her yard, enjoying the countryside, birds, and her flowers. She was a true lover of animals and of nature.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she will be missed by her family and friends.

Surviving are her sons, Ingwald and Mike; her daughter, Kristina; her grandchildren, Regina Mcclain, Kristen (Frank) Schittino, Ingwald Johnson (all of Florida) and Jennifer Biglane of Knox, Indiana; her great-grandchildren, Ryan McClain, Brandon McClain, Calvin King, Halie King, Carmella Schittino, and Kaylee Johnson, all of Florida, and Megan Biglane and Andrew Biglane of Knox; and her brother-in-law, Jerry Johnson of Maryland. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Joselyn.

A time of visiting with the family will be on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at 1:30 p.m., at the Van Gilder Funeral Home with the Rev. Denise Anderson officiating.

Burial will be in Tippecanoe cemetery, Tippecanoe.
