John L. O'Neal

BRAZIL - John L. O'Neal, 63, of Brazil died at 7 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in Clay Health Center. He worked for Logan Clay Co., for 24 years, then at Great Dane Co., for eight years; he has been disabled since Christmas Day, 1990. He was born Dec. 18, 1937, in Vigo County to Elvin O'Neal and Mary Bell Vanatti O'Neal. Survivors include his wife, Mary Evitts O'Neal, whom he married Jan. 26, 1958; two sons, Rickey O'Neal and his girlfriend, Katie Kenworthy of Terre Haute and Johnny O'Neal and his wife, Penny of Coal City; one brother, Claude "Butch" O'Neal of Clinton; six grandchildren, Brandy Collins of Clinton, Derek O'Neal of Brazil, Suzzanne Hutchinson of Terre Haute, Jessica Tener of Knightsville, Christopher O'Neal of Coal City and Micheal O'Neal of Logansport; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins; and two sisters-in-law, Melvina Chesshir and her husband, Delbert of Brazil and Nellie Burrel and her husband, Don of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Aurthur B. Foulke, four sisters, Dixie Ann, Mable, Rose and Doris; one brother, Elvin Jr.; and one grandson, Sean O'Neal. He was a member of Community Missionary Church and enjoyed singing at the church and at the local nursing homes. He also enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting. He was a former member of Brazil Eagles Lodge Aerie 274. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Community Missionary Church, 21 W. Pinckley St., with the Rev. Bill Brown officiating. Cremation will follow, with burial of the cremains at a later date. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in French Funeral Home, and one hour before services Saturday, in the church. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Community Missionary Church, 21 W. Pinckley St., Brazil, IN 47834.

Lena M. Spencer

BRAZIL - Lena M. Spencer, 75, of Terre Haute and formerly of Brazil and Benton, Ill., died at 1:50 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, in Westridge Health Care Center in Terre Haute. She was a licensed practical nurse, employed for 23 years at Franklin County Hospital in Benton, retiring in 1991, and later worked part time in home health care in Brazil. She was born Aug. 13, 1926, in Willisville, Ill., to Thomas J. Hedges and Anna Beattie Hedges. Her husband, John Allen Spencer, died in 1948. Survivors include two sons, Jeff Spencer of Terre Haute and Lonnie Clymer and his wife, Traci of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Thomas Hedges of Grand Saline, Texas and Charles Hedges of Peoria, Ill.; two sisters, Betty McDowell of Ewing, Ill., and Beverly Sisher of Pekin, Ill.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Benton. Services are 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in Miller Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Brad Bumgardner of Rockville officiating. Following cremation, memorial graveside rites will be 1 p.m. CST Saturday, Dec. 8, in the Masonic and Odd Fellows cemetery in Benton, with the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home of Benton assisting with graveside arrangements. Visitation is 4 p.m. until services Saturday in Miller Memorial Chapel. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Clay County Memorial Foundation, an affiliate of the Wabash Valley Memorial Foundation, Inc., 2901 Ohio Blvd., Suite 153, Terre Haute, IN 47803-2239. Envelopes will be available at both funeral homes.

Clarence Max Turbeville

CLINTON - Clarence Max Turbeville, 86, of Clinton died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in Vermillion Convalescent Center. He was born March 8, 1915, in Clinton to Everett Turbeville and Julia Knight. Survivors include one sister, Alberta Nickle; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday in Helt's Prairie cemetery. Frist Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Opal Zuel

BRAZIL - Opal Zuel, 89, of Brazil, and formerly of Terre Haute, died Wednesday evening, Nov. 28, 2001, in Clay Health Center. She was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Bucyrus, Kan., to George Zuel and Alva E. Smith Zuel. Survivors include many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Graveside services are 1:15 p.m. Saturday in Summit Lawn cemetery, with the Rev. Richard V. Pippin officiating. Visitation is noon to 1 p.m. Saturday in Miller Memorial Chapel.

Daniel Bell

Daniel Bell, 77, of Terre Haute died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in Union Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Josephine V. Bell; two sons, Daniel J. Bell and Richard H. Bell; one daughter, Barbara Lewis; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Robert M. Bell

Robert M. Bell, 80, of Terre Haute died at 12:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in Union Hospital. He was a retired engineer from Penn-Central Railroad. He was born April 1, 1921, in Indiana to Edward S. Bell and Alga Cooksey Bell. His wife, Gerthyl Price Bell, died in 1983. Survivors include three sons, Robert Wesley Bell of California, Gordon Dion Bell and his wife Charlette of Lafayette, and Bradley Dee Bell of Terre Haute; three daughters, Karren Rene Morrow and her husband Joe of Crown Point, Brenda Loy Dempsey and her husband Milton of Peoria, Ill., and Georgia Elnora Frost of Terre Haute; one sister, Norma Jean Roby and her husband Shannon of Terre Haute; 17 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a half brother, Carl Edward Bell; and a grandson, Bradley Dee Bell II. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of Retired Railroaders Association, and was a member of the Baseball Club of the 1948 State Champions. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until services Wednesday.

F. Eugene Englehart

F. Eugene Englehart, 92, of Terre Haute died at 11:18 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in Union Hospital's emergency room. He was born Oct. 26, 1909, in Clay County to Edward Englehart and Leona Bullock Englehart. Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Englehart; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Scott officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is noon until services Wednesday.

Danny Desean Hatfield Jr.

Danny Desean Hatfield Jr., infant son of Danny Desean Hatfield Sr., and Ann Marie Hawkins was stillborn at 6:55 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in Union Hospital. Survivors include his parents; paternal grandparents, Everett Johnson and Mozine Murphy; maternal grandparents, Rita Allen and William Hawkins Sr.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial services are at a later date. Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

James Lee Hoke

James Lee Hoke, 66, of Terre Haute died at 2:20 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, in Union Hospital. He retired from Commercial Solvents. He was born May 13, 1935, in Terre Haute to James Leslie Hoke and Alice Marie Simmons Hoke. Survivors include two sons, James Jeffrey Hoke of Terre Haute and John Leslie Hoke of La Porte; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Anne and Peter Dean of Terre Haute, Carolyn and Jim Whitehead of Buckeye, Ariz., and Nikki and Danny Hatcher of Pine, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Drahcir Hoke and Hannah Hoke; seven nephews; and six nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Gilbert Dean Hoke. He was a Marine Corps veteran. Services are 1 p.m. Friday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Harold Throckmartin officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Marvin J. "Boo' Jackson

Marvin J. "Boo" Jackson, 36, of Terre Haute and formerly of Gary died at 12:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born May 13, 1965, in Hammond to Willie Jackson and Luella Jackson Jackson. Survivors include his wife, Geneva Haire Jackson; one daughter, Marissa Jackson; his father and stepmother, Willie and Sharon Jackson; three sisters; three brothers; and extended family members. Services are 11 a.m. CST Saturday in Smith, Bizzell & Warner Chapel in Gary. Visitation is 8 a.m. until services Saturday.

Alta Cecil Koch

Alta Cecil Koch, 91, of Terre Haute died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, while vacationing in Corpus Cristi, Texas. She was born Oct. 21, 1910, in Tecumseh, Neb., to Reuben and Edith Cecil. She grew up in Lincoln, Neb. Her husband, Dr. G. David Koch, whom she married in 1935, died in 1972. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and David Hanson of Terre Haute, and Lois and Walter Bee of Scotland, UK; one sister, Teola Wilson of Tecumseh, Neb.; three grandchildren, Walter Lemke and his wife, Aneita of Plainfield, David Lemke and his wife Merit of Munster, and Alice Bee of Edinburgh, Scotland; 1 step granddaughter, Caroline Lockhart of Scotland; five great-grandchildren, Richie Lemke, Melissa Lemke, Jonathan Lemke, Phillip Lemke and Lillian Alta Lemke; and five stepgreat-grandchildren, Jeff Broyles, Jeremy Broyles, Balla Broyles, Alasdair Lockhart and Rosemary Lockhart. She and her husband moved to Terre Haute in 1939, when Dr. Koch joined the Department of Science at Indiana State University. During her 63 years in Terre Haute she was active in the First Congregational Church, where she founded and directed the Children's Choir, served on the church board, was active in and past president of the Mayflower Guild, sang in the church choir, was pianist and organist. She was an active member and held offices in the Nathaniel Foote Chapter of The Colonial Dames 17 Century, Fort Harrison Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, ISU Faculty Wives, Vigo County Historical Society, Indiana Historical Society, Indiana Hugenot Society, Bevier Elting Family Association and PEO. She was instrumental in the formation of New England Women, Terre Haute Symphony Association, Wabash Valley Audubon Society and was a sustaining member of Sigma Alpha Iota and Theta Alpha Phi. She was an accomplished pianist, and was sought after as an accompanist. She was an artist, specializing in oil paintings, and was known locally as a speaker on many topics for local organizations. Over the years she was active in both Sycamore Players and Children's Theater. She was a genealogical researcher and author, having compiled three colonial era family lineages that are housed in research libraries throughout the country. One of these books won a national award. She had a lifelong interest in writing and people nationwide anticipated her Christmas poem every year. She was honored by the National Association of Christian Churches in their publication, "Women Who Have Made a Difference", and by the Bevier Elting Family Association with the Distinguished Service Award. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Terre Haute First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Donald Mullen officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel. If friends so desire memorial contributions may be made to the Terre Haute First Congregational Church.

Agnes Marie Neaderhiser

Agnes Marie Neaderhiser, 77, of Terre Haute died Sunday morning, Jan. 27, 2002, in her residence. She was a former deputy assessor for Vigo County. She was born Jan. 20, 1925, in Seelyville to Michael and Anna Bartos. Her husband, Jack I. Neaderhiser, died in 1981. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Michele Neaderhiser, and Mark and Ruth Neaderhiser, all of Terre Haute; one sister and brother-in-law, Mary Kay and William Price of Terre Haute; one grandson, Matthew Neaderhiser; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Michael and Stephen; and two sisters, Barbara and Helen. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church and was formerly a long time member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Private services are Wednesday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Ken Ciano officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St.

Kathryn Riley Brown

BRAZIL - Kathryn Riley Brown, 83, of Brazil died at 8:06 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in her residence, following an extended illness. She retired 24 years ago from Clay County Hospital, where she was employed for 18 years in the housekeeping department. She was born July 27, 1918, in Clay County to Fred and Mary Fulling. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Richard Riley and Mack Brown. Survivors include one daughter, Marsha Carter; two sons, Richard Riley and Edward Riley; grandchildren, Rick Carter, Lori Ross, Steve Carter, Lisa Slater, Bill Carter, Tracy Riley, Derek Riley, Michelle Pullins and Scott Riley; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Florence Beaman. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Lawson-Slack Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Greg officiating. Burial is in Center Point cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Tina Marie Clement

TANGIER - Tina Marie Clement, 29, of Tangier died at 11:27 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, in the emergency room of West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. She was born May 1, 1972, in Clinton to Tommy Arthur Truax Sr. and Dorothy Barker Truax. Survivors include her husband, William F. Clement; one son, Dyllan Clement; two daughters, Brittany Clement and Keely Clement; her mother; two brothers, Tommy A. Truax and Chad A. Truax; one sister, Michelle L. Jones; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Gooch Funeral Home in Rockville, with the Rev. Don Perry officiating. Burial is in Memory Garden cemetery in Rockville. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today and before services Wednesday.
