Leroy Boatman Sr.
UNIVERSAL - Leroy Boatman Sr., 69, of Universal died at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in his residence. He was born Aug. 1, 1933, in Sesnee Park, Ill., to William Boatman and Lella Gose Boatman. Survivors include his wife, Mary Pritchard Boatman; three daughters, Becky Brockmeier, Lella Jones and Cindy Searing; one son, Leroy Boatman Jr.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. There are no services or visitation. Cremation is scheduled. Frist Funeral Home of Clinton assisted with arrangements.
Marie M. Hardman
BRAZIL - Marie M. Hardman, 82, of Brazil died at 1:20 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She was born June 3, 1920, in Clay County to William Edward Pearce and Helen Marie Brunett Pearce. Her husband, Robert E. Hardman, died April 6, 1997. Survivors include six sons, Patrick Hardman, Don Hardman, John Hardman, Robert Hardman, Ron Hardman and Walter Hardman; two daughters, Mary E. Hardman and Helen Crawford; three sisters, Loretta Martin, Helen Pearce and Mary Lashbrook; two brothers, Bernard Pearce and Edward Pearce; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Prayers are 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Moore Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Saturday in Annunciation Church of the Blessed Mary, with the Rev. Kenneth Ciano officiating. Burial is in Restlawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in Moore Funeral Home, with rosary service at 7 p.m.
William J. Smith
MONTEZUMA - William J. Smith, 73, of Montezuma died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, in West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. He was retired from Panhandle Eastern Pipeline and was previously employed by Montezuma Utilities. He was born May 26, 1929 in Mooresville to Cecil Smith and Ethel Rike Smith, and was raised from early childhood by Irv Swaim and Pearl Swaim of Tangier. His wife, Patsy R. Smith, whom he married
July 15, 1951, died in 1994. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Fred Carey of Montezuma; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Susan Hobson Smith of Rockville; one brother, Cecil Smith of Scipio; one sister, Virginia Green of Bowling Green, Ky.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by two sons, Christopher Smith and William Joseph Smith II. He was a member of Montezuma Christian Church and attended Coloma Friends Church. He was a graduate of Tangier High School and was an Air Force veteran, serving from 1949 to 1952. Services are 11 a.m. today in Coloma Friends Church, with the Rev. William Flanigan officiating. Burial is in Oakland cemetery, with graveside military rites. Visitation was Thursday, in the church. Barnes Mortuary of Rockville, assisted with arrangements.
Roberta J. Blair
Roberta J. Blair, 70, of Terre Haute died at 7:04 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital emergency room. She was retired from Sears, Roebuck and Co. where she had worked for many years in sales and stocking merchandise. She was born Dec. 24, 1931, in Terre Haute to Robert P. Long and Marion F. Campbell Long. Survivors include her husband, Harold G. "Arch" Blair Jr., whom she married
Sept. 16, 1951; one daughter, Sharon McGee of Terre Haute; one son, Steven M. Blair and wife Beverly of Sullivan; one brother, Edward Long and wife Donna of Rosedale; one sister, Mary Lou Blizzard of Greenwood; and three grandchildren, Kris M. Blair, Matt S. Blair and Sarah D. Blair. She was a Garfield High School graduate. She was known as "Bobbie." Services are 1 p.m. Friday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with the Rev. Eddie Hammond officiating. Fred H. Butts Sr.
Fred H. Butts Sr., 80, of Riley died at 7:38 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in his residence due to complications of multiple myeloma. He was co-owner and manager of Monninger Concrete Products for nearly 20 years. He was born April 18, 1922, in Clay County to Homer H. Butts and Katherine Milner Butts. Survivors include his wife, Patty Ann Monninger Butts, whom he married
Sept. 25, 1956; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gay Ann and Marc Weaver of Pimento and Sue Ann and Mark Galenski of Hartford City; two sons, Fred H. Butts Jr. and wife Beth Anne and Jeffrey M. Butts, all of Terre Haute; one sister, Jeanne Nugent of Brazil; one aunt, Grace Taylor of Terre Haute; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Butts. He was a World War II army veteran. He previously worked as a locomotive fireman and a train engineer for Pennsylvania Railroad. He attended Maryland Community Church. He was a longtime member of the American Angus Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. For the past 20 years he farmed and was active in farming until recently. He enjoyed his family, the farm and being outdoors. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Callahan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Vince McFarland officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.
Betty Jane Cottrell Erdle
Betty Jane Cottrell Erdle, 62, of Terre Haute died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She worked at Columbia Records and owned and operated Prime Time Video on Park Avenue. She was born Feb. 5, 1940, in Terre Haute to William Herschel Cottrell and Maxene Cottrell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Lee Erdle. Survivors include her mother, Maxene Cottrell; her fiance', Glen Cown; two daughters, Brenda White and her husband Timothy of Atlanta and Tammy Wallace of Cincinnati; one brother, Norman E. Cottrell and wife Jean Cottrell; several grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend, Peter Lamb. She also was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Donna Sue Erdle; her father; and two brothers, William Ralph Cottrell and Jess Cottrell. She graduated from Otter Creek High School in 1958. She also worked as a nurse's aide in Union Hospital and as a cashier at Kroger. She lived in several places in the Midwest. She was an associate member of the Fraternal Order of Police; a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972; and the American Legion. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Floyd Miller officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Orville Max Liffick
Orville Max Liffick, 81, of San Antonio, Texas, and formerly of Terre Haute died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002. He was a career military man, having served in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy. He was born April 18, 1921, in Vigo County to Orville W. Liffick and Doris Watson Liffick. Survivors include his wife, Rigmor Betty Christofferson Liffick; one son and daughter-in-law, "Bill" and Jeanie Liffick; two stepsons and their wives, Larry and Marty Cramer and Gary and Susie Cramer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Norman Farrell and Cyndi and Tom Hermann; six grandchildren, Jeanine, Polly, Jessica, Jaclyn, Jason and Jolene; two step grandchildren, Michael Cramer and Lorie Kempen; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Erman Liffick and Ernest Liffick. He was a Vietnam War veteran. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel. Burial is in New Harmony cemetery. Thelma Louise Servie
Thelma Louise Servie, 81, of Terre Haute died at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital, due to heart failure. She was retired as a bookkeeper from Fair Furniture Store. She was born March 25, 1921, in Clinton to John Oscar Roach and Lenna Lilias Lee Roach. Her first husband, Richard "Bill" Otte, and her second husband, David Morgan Servie, preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Ferguson and her husband Charles of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Jill Ann Lydick, Casey Francis Callahan and wife Toni Jo, and Katie Lynn Callahan, all of Terre Haute; and five great-grandchildren, Taylor Leigh Adkins, Maddison Mackenzie Callahan, Olivia Channing Callahan, Katelyn Grace Callahan and Camren Kennedy Callahan, all of Terre Haute; one brother-in-law, Albert Servie and wife Anna of Sanford, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins. She also was preceded in death by one sibling, Jesse Roach. She was a 1938 graduate of Garfield High School and a graduate of Terre Haute Business College. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Herb and the Rev. Ryan Berryhill officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today.
Shirley Ann Pearison
SHELBURN - Shirley Ann Pearison, 66, of Shelburn died at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Millers Merry Manor Healthcare in Sullivan. She was a packer for Ivy Hill Packaging in Terre Haute. She was born Jan. 28, 1936, in Shelburn to Millard Noel and Lela E. Trueblood Noel. Survivors include two sons, Steve Pearison and wife Chris and Mike Pearison and wife Sandy, all of Shelburn; four grandchildren, Joseph Pearison, Chelsey Pearison, Melissa Edwards and Jennifer Stamper; three brothers, Claude Noel of Apple Valley, Calif., Wayne Noel of Chesterton and James Noel of Shelburn; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rosalie Wright of LaPorte and Dixie Bose of Carmel. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen Noel and Leon Noel; and three sisters, Phyllis Price, Ruth Riggs and Leah Noel. She was a member of Shelburn Church of God. Services are 2 p.m. Thursday in Mattox-McHugh Shelburn Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Adams officiating. Burial is in Liberty cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. today.
Olive M. Waters
BRAZIL - Olive M. Waters, 89, of Brazil died at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Holly Hill Health Care where she had been a resident for the past year. She was born April 4, 1913, in Clay County to Homer McCullough and Minnie Waggoner McCullough. Her husband, Vaughn Waters, died April 24, 2002. Survivors include one brother, David McCullough; five nephews; five nieces; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Union cemetery, with the Revs. Max Brunton and Randy Slavens officiating. Visitation is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Miller Memorial Chapel.
William Leon Davis
William Leon Davis, 63, of Fontanet died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was a painter for Camp & Sons and the Union Hall. He was born Aug. 25, 1939, in Terre Haute to James Albert Davis and Helen Lybarger Davis. Survivors include one daughter, Kellie Mayes and her husband, Albert of Hillsdale; one granddaughter, Mandie Benskin and her husband, Dennis; one grandson, Jerry Steadman Jr. and his fiancee, Heather Hux; two great-grandchildren, Paige Benskin and Kierstin Steadman; two brothers, James Davis and Gilbert Davis and his wife, Nancy; one sister, Nancy Kirby; and nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; his mother, Helen Bell; and one brother, Charles Davis. He was an Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 290 of Rosedale. Richard L. Kline
Richard L. Kline, 83, of Muncie and formerly of Terre Haute died Friday afternoon, Feb. 7, 2003, in his residence, following a brief illness. He retired as a correctional officer after 24 years of service, before moving to Muncie. He was born in Terre Haute, to Charles E. Kline and Mary List Kline. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Kline; one son, Richard L. Kline Jr. and his wife, LoAnn of Key West. Fla.; one daughter, Susan Chalfant and her husband, Robert of Muncie; two grandsons, Charles R. Kline and his wife, Barbara of Loveland, Colo., and Anthony Rufatto and his wife, Alexandria of Muncie; one granddaughter, Allison Ebert and her husband, Sean of Roselle, Ill.; one great-grandson, Noah Kline of Loveland; one brother, James Kline and his wife, Virginia of Terre Haute; and his caregiver, Shammon Estep. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Charles Kline. He was a member of the High Street United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Shrine Club and the Elks Club. He was a 1938 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School. Memorial services are 4 p.m. Sunday in High Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Chris Danielson officiating. June V. Mattox, 81, of West Terre Haute died at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, in Vermillion Convalescent Center in Clinton. She retired from the Vigo County Assessor's Office after many years of service. She was born Nov. 3, 1921, in West Terre Haute to Floyd Victor "Bill" Trueblood and Elsie Campbell Trueblood. Feb. 3, 1940, in Terre Haute; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roy E. and Chris Mattox of Attica and Tommy R. and Ann Mattox of Bloomingdale; one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Cyril Cole of Mishawaka; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert Wesley and Kay Trueblood of Terre Haute; one sister-in-law, Ruth Madden of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Pete Trueblood and Larry Trueblood. She was a member of Shepherdsville Trinity Church and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 428 of West Terre Haute. Services are 10 a.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. BLOOMINGDALE - George D. Snodgrass, 77, of Bloomingdale died at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, in his residence. He was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Bloomingdale to Marion Snodgrass and Ethel M. Barr Snodgrass. His wife, Mavis Moehring Snodgrass, died October 1998. Survivors include one daughter, Karen Crooks; two sons, Gerald Snodgrass and Brian Snodgrass; one brother, James G. Snodgrass; one sister, Lucille Jenkins; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services are 3 p.m. Friday in Barnes Mortuary in Rockville, with the Rev. Wendell Adams officiating. Lillie Mae Hadley
Lillie Mae Hadley, of Terre Haute and formerly of Oklahoma City, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2003, in her residence. She was a homemaker. She was born in Oklahoma to James Collum and Clara Melton Collum. Her husband, C.A. Hadley, died March 11, 1981. Survivors include her companion, Harry Schaffer and his sons, Ed D. Schaffer and his wife, Martha and Shawn L. Schaffer and his wife, Laura, all of Terre Haute and his grand children, Jessica Rose Schaffer, Jacqueline M. Schaffer, Julia Kate Schaffer, Jadin H. Schaffer, Gabriel Alexander Schaffer and Michael Orion Schaffer; one brother, Gary L. Clemmons of Oklahoma City; and one sister, Mary Kellums of Terre Haute. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the Oklahoma City Shrine. She enjoyed working with crafts, gardening and mushroom hunting. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with Donna McKenzie officiating. Burial is in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Oklahoma City. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Schaffer, David R. Shaffer Jr., Steven Shaffer, Bradley K. Shaffer, Ed D. Schaffer and Shawn L. Schaffer.
