LINTON - Berma Ann Place, 90, of Linton died at 4:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, in Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Jasonville. She was born Dec. 20, 1910, in Fayette, Ohio, to Alvin Shepard and Dora Boughman Shepard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Place Sr. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth "Skip" Van Doren and Fred Place Jr.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Monday in Fairview cemetery, with the Rev. Kenneth Adams officiating. Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan assisted with arrangements.

Harold E. Poppino

SHELBURN - Harold E. Poppino, 94, of Mishawaka died at 7:07 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, in St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in South Bend. He was born Oct. 6, 1907, in New Lebanon to Charles Silas Poppino and Edna Tuell Poppino. Survivors include his wife, Clarice Poppino; one son, Donald Poppino; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 2 p.m. today in Mattox-McHugh Shelburn Chapel, with the Rev. Russell Black officiating. Burial is in Little Flock cemetery. Visitation is 1 p.m. until services.

Robert E. Winings

ROCKVILLE - Robert E. Winings, 89, of Danville, Ind., and formerly of Marshall and Rockville died at 6:32 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, in Hendricks Community Hospital in Danville. He was a retired restaurant and motel owner in LaPlace, Ill., and a retired farmer in Parke County. He was born Sept. 8, 1912, in Arthur, Ill., to Lewis T. Winings and Cora Hiser Winings. He married Eloise Murphy on Sept. 8, 1937, in St. Charles, Mo., and she preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 2000. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Floyd Stahl of Foley, Ala., and Janet and Richard Himsel of Danville; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. He was a graduate of Arthur (Ill.) High School. He was an artist, taught oil painting, and during the Parke County Covered Bridge Festival would paint scenes of the bridge and trails at the Narrows Bridge. He was a member of Hendricks County Senior Citizens, where he also gave painting lessons. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday in Barnes Mortuary, with the Rev. Don Perry officiating. Burial is in Poplar Grove cemetery in Marshall. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Suzanna H. Grimes

Suzanna H. Grimes, 87, of Clarksville, and formerly of Terre Haute died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Clarksville. She worked at Columbia House 20 years. She was born Jan. 3, 1915, in Dillonvale, Ohio, to Ernest Traversa and Gabrielle Hirsch Traversa. Her husband, Archibald O. Grimes, died July 18, 1993. Survivors include one daughter, LaDonna Haase and her husband, Bill of Clarksville; one daughter-in-law, Jane Grimes of Terre Haute; one sister, Florence Jennings of Arizona; four grandchildren, Curt Haase, Kim Parker, Laura Grimes and Kristin Grimes; one great-granddaughter, Brittany Parker; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by one son, Paul Grimes, Nov. 18, 1999; two brothers, Emil Traversa and Gus Traversa; and two sisters, Mary Gutish and Helen Murphy. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Wayne Newton American Legion Post 346 Auxiliary and Lawton-Byrum Post 972 Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday in Holy Rosary Church, with the Rev. Ken Ciano officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in The Callahan Funeral Home.

Anna Marie Maggart

Anna Marie Maggart, 88, of Terre Haute died at 5:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, in Union Hospital. She was born Aug. 24, 1913, in Carterack, N.J., to Stephen Pollock and Julia Mucki Pollock. Her husband, David Maggart, died in 1958. Survivors include one sister, Irene Austin; and several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial is 11:30 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steve Giannini officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Visitation is 9:30 a.m. until services Monday, in the church. Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Russell D. Ringham

Russell D. Ringham, 74, of Terre Haute died at 1:50 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was a retired materials handler for Stran Steel. He was born Feb. 13, 1927, in Terre Haute to Raymond Ringham and Anna Splittorf Ringham. Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Watson Ringham, whom he married Sept. 9, 1950; two sons, Larry Ringham and his wife, Dixie and David Ringham and his wife, Karen, all of Terre Haute; one brother, Carl Ringham; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Raymond Ringham Jr. He was an Army infantry veteran of World War II. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Roush officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Harry F. Dyer

WORTHINGTON - Harry F. Dyer, 78, of Seymour and formerly of Worthington died at 4:35 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Memorial Hospital in Seymour. He was born June 23, 1923, in Worthington to A. Earl Dyer and Clara Wall Dyer. Survivors include his wife, Ruth M. Calvert Dyer; two sons, Ronald L. Dyer and Thomas K. Dyer; one daughter, Cheryl A. Orr; one brother, Wilson C. Dyer; two sisters, Grace Gourdouze and Marjorie Miller; and five grandchildren. Services are 3 p.m. Sunday, in Welch & Cornett Worthington Chapel, with the Rev Andrew Currao officiating. Burial is in Worthington cemetery. Visitation is 1 p.m. until services Sunday.

Glenn M. Harmon

SHELBURN - Glenn M. Harmon, 45, of Shelburn died at 10:31 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Sullivan County Community Hospital. He was born Feb. 8, 1956, in Illinois. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Bovenschen Harmon; one stepson, Billy Carrico; and one stepdaughter, Bonnie Gilbert. Services are 2 p.m. Monday in Banks & Brust Funeral Home, with the Rev. Terry Bush officiating. Burial is in Douglas Chapel cemetery. Visitation is noon until services Monday.

John I. Hiatt

CLAY CITY - John I. Hiatt, 80, of Clay City died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born April 22, 1921, in Delaware County to Ira T. Hiatt and Lula May Ritchie Hiatt. Services are pending at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home.

Kenneth Zellars

SULLIVAN - Kenneth Zellars, 46, of Sullivan died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born Jan. 1, 1956, in Sullivan to Fred Zellars and Clara Sturgeon Zellars. Survivors include his father; three brothers, John Ed Zellars, Danny Zellars and Pete Zellars; five sisters, Sharon Zellars, Ruby Southwood, Lori Zellars, Angela Woods and Lisa Walls. Graveside services are 2 p.m. today in Little Rock cemetery in Shelburn, with the Rev. Rick Southwood officiating. Holmes Memorial Chapel assisted with arrangements.

George Bernard Hamblin

George Bernard Hamblin, 86, of Terre Haute died at 9:46 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Union Hospital. He retired from Sears Roebuck in 1981. He was born June 14, 1916, in Paris, Ill., to Harley Hershel Hamblin and Ann Elizabeth Haase Hamblin. His wife, Ruth Morton Hamblin, died in 1996. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sheryl and Rodney Chambers of Branson, Mo.; two sons, George and his wife, Linda of Roscoe, Ill., and John and his wife, Kathy of Terre Haute; one sister, Patty Stark and her husband, Jack of Paris; eight grandchildren, Curt Chambers and his wife, Sherri of Madison, Wis., Carson Chambers and his wife, Michelle of Truckee, Calif., Eric Hamblin and his wife, Zoki of Derby, Kans., Jennifer Hamblin of Bollingbrook, Ill., Tara Hamblin of Roscoe, Ill., John Hamblin, Jared Hamblin and Jessica Hamblin, all of Terre Haute; and five great-grandchildren, Dakota Chambers, Taylor Chambers and Dylan Chambers, all of Madison, Alison Hamblin and Patrick Hamblin, both of Derby. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of First Baptist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Paris. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Newman officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, 4701 Poplar St., Terre Haute, IN 47802.

Mildred L. McGrew

Mildred L. McGrew, 76, of Terre Haute died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in Union Hospital. She was born Oct. 15, 1925, in Bloomington to Robert and Myrtle Deckard. Her husband, David L. McGrew Sr., died March 1, 1994. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David L. and Judith McGrew of Villanova, Pa., and Robert D. and Susan McGrew of Cornish, Maine; six grandchildren, Richard McGrew, Nicole Allison, Monique McGrew, Robert Shawn McGrew, Nathan McGrew and Cory McGrew; six great-grandchildren, Austin Ayotte, Aaron Ayotte, Brittany McGrew, Kaleb McGrew, Kyle McGrew and Ashlyn McGrew; one brother, Richard Deckard; and four sisters, Maggie Clark, Maxine Nichols, Martha Giles Bruner and Laura Mae Harding. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Mary McHaffey; and one brother, Mitchell Deckard. Services are 3 p.m. Wednesday in Roselawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Scott officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Ruthmarie BauerNewport

Ruthmarie Bauer Newport, 48, of Terre Haute died at 3 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, in her residence. She was a teacher at West Vigo High School. She was born May 12, 1954, in Terre Haute to Joseph Bauer and Norma Scott Bauer. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Michael Newport, whom she married Aug. 7, 1976; two daughters, Leah Newport and Marcee Newport, both of Terre Haute; two sons, Joey Newport and Christopher Newport, both of Terre Haute; her parents of Terre Haute; her grandmother, Marie Scott of Terre Haute; two brothers, Scott Bauer and Chris Bauer, both of Terre Haute; two sisters, Teresa Shaffer of Terre Haute and Katy Myer of Indianapolis; and nieces and nephews. She formerly worked at Seelyville United Methodist Church Pre-school. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Altar Society of the church, coordinated their annual Thanksgiving Day dinner and was a former member of St. Patrick Parish Council. She also was a member of Indiana State Teachers Association, Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, the Craft Club and was a Y-Teen advisor. She was affiliated with Invitational Schools, P.D.S. Committee, Community of Caring, Make a Difference Day, Relay for Life, CHIRP, Bunko Babes, the Schulte Group and THREDD. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in the church, with Monsignor Lawrence Moran officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers are Scott Bauer, Chris Bauer, Mick Newport, Doug Shaffer, Lee Myer and Tim Seprodi. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Callahan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick School, 449 S. 19th St., Terre Haute, IN 47803; or the American Cancer Society, 705 Putnam, Terre Haute, IN 47802.

Alden John Smith

Alden John Smith, 82, of Terre Haute died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, in Union Hospital. He retired in 1986, as an associate professor of business at Indiana State University. He was born Oct. 31, 1919, in Red Hook, N.Y., to Foster H. Smith and Florence Stall Smith. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lorene Mundy Smith; two daughters, Cindy Coplen of Plainfield and Ceil Seprodi and her husband, Tim of Terre Haute; one sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Edward Bowman of Red Hook; and a nephew, Robert Smith and his wife, Christine of California. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Margaret Smith; and two brothers, Merrick Smith and Raymond Smith. He was a veteran of World War II, having attained the rank of captain in the Army Air Force. He earned a graduate degree in ceramic engineering from Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., and had done graduate study at Indiana University, Indiana State University and Kent State University. Early in his career he spent several years in the ceramic industry in Tennessee and also in Ohio. He was a 36 year member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of several professional organizations. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in the church, with the Rev. Roger Herrig officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St.

Clyde Merle Wright

Clyde Merle Wright, 60, of Plant City, Fla., and formerly of Terre Haute died May 28, 2002, in Plant City. He was born June 1, 1941, in Terre Haute to Thomas Erwin Wright and Leannah Farrand Wright. Survivors include his wife, Rose Anna Fouts Wright; one daughter, Natalie Rebel; three sons, Clyde Wright Jr., Don Wright and Ronald Wright; one brother, Erwin Wright; two sisters, Shirley Graves and Eugenia Ellis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial services were in the Moose Lodge in Plant City. The National Cremation Society in Tampa, Fla., assisted with arrangements.
