Juanita Dowdy, 68, of Spencer died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born Jan. 2, 1936, in Soddy Daisy, Tenn., to William Thomas and Reba Parton Perkey. Survivors include her husband, Charles Dowdy; two daughters, Sheila Maples and Cindy Dowdy; two sisters, Ida Garlet and Barbara Davis; and one brother, Jerry Perkey. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer. Burial is in Splinter Ridge cemetery in Owen County. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Wednesday.

Melvin L. Johnston

Melvin L. Johnston, 63, of Terre Haute died at 4:58 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Union Hospital. He worked for Goodwill Industries in the recycling area. He was born May 4, 1940, in Vigo County to Jessie T. Johnston and Virginia Spore Johnston. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Hafley Johnston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Tony and Terry Worthington and Lee Ann and Bob Crab, all of Terre Haute, five grandsons; two granddaughters; one brother and sister-in-law, Leonard W. and Phyllis Johnston of Clinton; two sisters, Mary Bunch and her husband Ed, and Kristi Cheatam and her husband Jerome, all of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation is scheduled. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Thursday in Frist Funeral Home, with the Rev. Virgil Sams officiating. There is no visitation.

Henrietta M. Lee

Henrietta M. Lee, 93, of Terre Haute died at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was an insurance underwriter with Buntin Conley Insurance Co., from which she retired. She was born Dec. 28, 1910, in Terre Haute to John Gordon Lee and Anna Elizabeth Morlock Lee. Survivors include one niece, Mary Lee; one nephew, John Gordon Lee; a sister-in-law, Anne Lee of Terre Haute; two great-nephews; and one great-niece. She was preceded in death by her twin brother, David Lee, on Feb. 20, 2000. She was a graduate of Wiley High School and Indiana State Teachers College. She was a member of Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church and Alpha Omicron Pi. Services are 1 p.m. Friday in Callahan Funeral Home at 2425 Wabash Ave. Burial is in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Visitation is noon until services Friday.

Berlin Miller

Berlin Miller, 95, of Terre Haute died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004. He was a retired farmer. He was born June 20, 1908, in Clay County to Herbert C. Miller and Nellie M. Snider Miller. His wife, Lillian L. Jackson Miller, whom he married in February 1929, died in 1990. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Freda Miller of Brazil; one daughter-in-law, Jane Miller of Patricksburg; four grandchildren, Beverly Johns and her husband Ralph, and Thomas Miller and his wife Julie, all of Patricksburg, Bob Miller and his wife Tina, and Brenda Kile and her husband David, all of Brazil; 13 great-grandchildren, Christa Foust and her husband Gary of Cloverdale, Scott Miller and his wife Lynn of Coatesville, Kevin Miller, Kellie Miller, Ginny Miller and Tony Miller, all of Patricksburg, Kenneth Johns and his wife Heather of Plainfield, Gwendolyn Tucker and her husband Travis, Brigitte Kile, Megan Kile, Logan Kile, Kirsten Miller and Kaleena Miller, all of Brazil; five great-great-grandchildren, Gabriel Foust, Savannah Hughes, Caleb Foust, Dakota Hughes and Isaac Foust; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He also was preceded in death by one son, Donald J. Miller in 1992; two grandsons, Mark Miller in 1990, and Roger Miller in 2003; and three brothers, Herschell, Howard and William. He had lived in the Cory, Riley and Patricksburg areas and had been a resident of Terre Haute Nursing Home for four years. He was a former member of Patricksburg Fire Department and helped with the Cory Apple Festival for several years. His hobbies included horse pulling, pony pulling and playing euchre. He was a member of Zion Community Church in Cory. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mattox-Fox Funeral Home in Riley, with the Rev. Jerry Caskey officiating. Burial is in Oak Hill cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Thomas All Morgan

Thomas All Morgan, 88, of West Terre Haute died at 10:50 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, following a lengthy illness. He retired from Public Service Indiana in 1978, after 44 years of service. He was born Jan. 6, 1916, to Thomas B. Morgan and Gladys All Morgan. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Frances Casebeer Morgan, whom he married in 1935 in St. Leonard Catholic Church in West Terre Haute; one daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and William E. Fagg of Terre Haute; two sons, Thomas Morgan III and his wife Dorothy of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Mark A. Morgan and his wife, Connie, of East Peoria, Ill.; one sister, Margaret Moriah Rogers and her husband, Ervin, of Lake Zurich, Ill.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Vaughn Morgan; and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Curry and Martha Jo Kepler. He was a member of the West Terre Haute Young Mens Club. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Leonard Catholic Church, with the Rev. Bernard Head officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with a rosary service at 7 p.m. There will also be visitation from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Patricia L. O'Connell

Patricia L. O'Connell, 73, of Terre Haute died at 1:47 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in her brother's residence near Lewis. She was an executive secretary with Eastern Express, from which she retired after 23 years of service. She was born Sept. 15, 1930, in Terre Haute to William Jennings O'Connell and Maude T. Wortman O'Connell. Survivors include one sister, Eileen McDaid and her husband Richard of Wooster, Ohio; one brother, William J. O'Connell of Lewis; 12 nieces and nephews, Patricia Lenne of Plymouth, Carol, Jim, Bill and Michael McDaid, all of Wooster, Brian O'Connell, Jennifer Latham, Eileen Downing, Shawn O'Connell, Riley O'Connell and Bridgett O'Connell, all of Terre Haute, and Staff Sgt. Patrick O'Connell serving in Germany; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Rita Christy. She graduated from Wiley High School and had attended Indiana State University. She was an enthusiastic fisherman, an avid reader and enjoyed nature. Services are 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Calvary cemetery. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. There is no visitation. DeBaun Springhill Chapel assisted with arrangements.

Pearl Louise Downs Plew

Pearl Louise Downs Plew, 90, of West Terre Haute died at 4:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, in Meadows Manor North. She retired from the Vigo County School Corp. in 1978, after many years of service as the cafeteria manager for West Vigo Elementary School. She was born Dec. 18, 1913, in Marshall, Ill., to Lote Downs and Stella M. Irwin Downs. Her husband, Harold Plew, whom she married Dec. 3, 1932, died June 5, 1978. Survivors include three daughters, Pat McFarlin, Joan Pruiett and Susan Bigger and her husband Allan, all of West Terre Haute; two sons, Jim Plew and his wife Linda, and Bill Plew, all of West Terre Haute; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Plew of West Terre Haute; 17 grandchildren, Linda Haywood, Brenda Goodier, Mike Pruiett, Bruce Pruiett, Jimmy Plew, Sean Plew, Ricky Plew, Kim Velligan, Lesa Plew, Shane Plew, Kevin Bigger, Ryan Bigger, Brent Bigger, Steve Plew, Debbie Rogers, Darlene House and Diane Deal; 23 great-grandchildren; a niece, Carol Lynn Whallon of West Terre Haute; and a nephew, Max Edward Downs Jr. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Richard Plew on Dec. 12, 2003; a granddaughter, Francheska Pruiett; three sisters, Edith Laughter, Geraldine Downs and Betty Jane Downs; and two brothers, Fred Downs and Max Downs. She was a 1931 graduate of the former Valley High School. She was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ, Vigo County Food Service Association, National Retired Cafeteria Managers Association, Retired Indiana Public Employees Association and the former Rebeka Lodge. Services are 2 p.m. Thursday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with Joe Irwin and the Rev. Steve Moore officiating. Burial is in Bethesda Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. until services Thursday. The family suggests that, if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to ARC of Vigo County, or Bethany United Church of Christ, with envelopes available at the funeral home.

Anna F. Neal

HYMERA - Anna F. Neal, 63, of Hymera died at 12:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was a homemaker. She was born Feb. 20, 1940, in Hymera to William H. Dean and Goldie L. Blevins Dean. Survivors include her husband, Larry L. Neal; one son, Larry D. Neal of Poolesville, Md.; one daughter, Cindy Crosby of Coalmont; five sisters, Ruth Evelyn Wilson of Angola, Norma Lee Sanders of Sullivan, Marjie Ellen Shaw of Terre Haute, Katie Knowles of Hymera and Alice Staley of Clay City; four brothers, Diz Dean and Hugh Dean, both of Hymera, Bill Dean of Fort Branch and Jimmy Dean of Sullivan; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of Hymera First Baptist Church and Baptist Women's Association. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in the church, with the Rev. David Wilson officiating. Burial is in Peavey cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Mattox Funeral Homes assisted with arrangements.

Catherine Stites

MECCA - Catherine Stites, 79, of Mecca died at 8:15 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was a homemaker and formerly a cook at the Motel Forrest Restaurant in Rockville. She was born Feb. 23, 1924, in Mecca to Alford N. Myers and Lovina Walton Myers. Her husband, William G. Stites, whom she married March 1, 1943, in Parke County, died Oct. 13, 1956. Survivors include four sons, Glen Stites of Montezuma, Joe Stites and Don Stites, both of Mecca and Larry Stites of Rockville; three daughters, Linda Ratcliff and Vickie Jackson, both of Mecca and Betty Gowen of Robinson, Ill.; 23 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one son, Ross Stites; four brothers, Edison Tommy Myers, Wilburn Myers, Roy Myers and Dick Myers; three sisters, Virginia Kent, Ester Lee and Evelyn Turbeville; one grandson and two great-grandchildren. She was a 1942 graduate of Mecca High School. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday in Barnes Mortuary in Rockville, with the Rev. Tim Guoli officiating. Burial is in Hixon cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Janett Foxworthy Hoke

Janett Foxworthy Hoke, 67, of Terre Haute died at 5:08 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was a registered nurse for 28 years and had been employed by both Union and Regional hospitals. She was born Dec. 29, 1936, in Vigo County to Shirley Foxworthy and Mary Bender Foxworthy. Survivors include two sons, John Leslie Hoke and his wife, Stephanie, of La Porte, and James Jeffery Hoke of Terre Haute; two sisters, Margie Harris of Indianapolis and Mary Groves of South Carolina; one brother, Bruce Foxworthy; two granddaughters, Drahcir Hoke and Hannah Hoke; and several nieces and nephews. She was a 1954 graduate of Glenn High School and went on to graduate from Missouri Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1960. She was a member of Hulman Street Assembly of God. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Patrick Newton officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Wednesday.

Helen "Rosie" Owens, 93, of Beech Grove died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004. Survivors include one daughter, Margie Forbes; one son, Ken Owens; one sister, Mary Balsdon; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Tuesday. Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, Indianapolis, assisted with arrangements.

Wayne L. Wells

Wayne L. Wells, 79, of Terre Haute died at 10:11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He formerly was assistant credit manager for DX Oil and was owner of Wells Florist after he retired. He was born May 17, 1924, in Pimento to Leo C. Wells and Emily Scott Wells. His first wife, Ruth Doyal Wells, died in 1984. Survivors include his wife, Clara Overton Clayton Wells, whom he married Sept. 18, 1989; two daughters, Elaine Kay of Kansas City, Kans., and Janet Wells-Ferres of Terre Haute; one stepdaughter, Judy Clayton of Terre Haute; two stepsons, Gerald Clayton of Forrest Park, Ill., and Ronald Clayton of West Terre Haute; two granddaughters, Sherry Fisher of Newburgh and Angie Ferres of Palm Harbor, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Brittnee Fisher, Jordan Fisher and Torey Fisher; step grandchildren, Robert Clayton of Valparaiso, Jennifer Josleyn of Hobart; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Brianna Clayton, Kayla Josleyn and Jacob Josleyn; and cousins, Dick and Jim Beatty, John Scott, Paul Scott, Bob Scott and Roseann Campbell. He was an Army veteran and served in active combat during World War II, graduated in 1942 from Pimento High School and attended Indiana State University. He was a member of Krietenstein Post 104 American Legion, Greater Terre Haute Bowling Association and was an avid bowler, golfer, fisherman and enjoyed camping. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Burial is in New Harmony cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

John Rasky Jr.

HYMERA - John Rasky Jr., 91, of Hymera died at 9:24 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in Sullivan County Community Hospital in Sullivan. He was born May 30, 1912, in Whitsett, Pa., to John Rasky Sr. and Julia Puskas Rasky. His wife, Elsie Rasky, died in 2001. Survivors include one niece, Lois Davidson; and one nephew, Larry Stanifer. Graveside services are 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Westlawn cemetery in Farmersburg, with the Rev. Bill Herb officiating and with military rites. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mattox-McHugh Funeral Home Shelburn Chapel.

Stephen D. Sawyers

BRAZIL - Stephen D. Sawyers, 57, of Brazil died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, in his residence. He was a line splicer for GTE and Verizon, retiring in 2000 after working 30 years with the utilities. He was born July 25, 1946, in Vigo County to William D. Sawyers Sr. and Thelma Ercell Lord Sawyers. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Peguero Sawyers, whom he married Feb. 14, 1969, in Merced, Calif.; one daughter, Jennifer Sawyers of Brazil; one son, Michael Sawyers and his wife, Qian Li, of Antioch, Calif.; his mother, Thelma E. Odom of Deer Park, Ala.; one brother, William D. Sawyers Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Elyssa Buck and Austin Sabla, both of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews; and several extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father. He had lived west of Brazil for the past 10 years and had been in ill health for some time. He was a 1964 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969. He was a member of Post 2 American Legion, Brazil Eagles Aerie 274, and Moose Lodge 780. To comply with his wishes, cremation will take place. Memorial services are 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Central Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, 4950 E. Wabash Ave., Terre Haute, with the Rev. Ric May officiating. Miller Memorial Chapel assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Hospice, 3900 S. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47802.
