BRAZIL - Janetta Ann Grieve, 33, of Brazil died at 12:50 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004, from injuries suffered in a vehicle accident on Miami Gardens Road. She was born April 29, 1970, in Indianapolis to John Dennis Elkins and Fredda Davis Elkins. Survivors include two sons, Christopher J. and Shane L. Dean; her mother; one sister, Margaret Jean Majstorovic; and one brother, John F. Elkins. Services are 4 p.m. Saturday in Moore Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carl Davis officiating. Burial is in Calcutta cemetery. Visitation is 2 p.m. until services Saturday.

Donald E. Huber

BRAZIL - Donald E. Huber, 78, of Brazil died at 6 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, in his residence. He was a design engineer with Arketex, Wilson Tech and Great Dane, designing buildings, machinery and semi-trailers. He was born July 15, 1925, in Rockville to William Huber and Freida Wagner Huber. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Suzanne Elizabeth Keever Huber; two sons, Matthew S. Huber and his wife, Melanie and Timothy A. Huber, all of Brazil; two sisters, Rhea McKenzie and Colleen Williams, both of Brazil; one brother, William Huber Jr., and his wife, Minneta of Sellersburg; two grandchildren, John Philip Huber and Janelle Renee Huber, both of Brazil; one sister-in-law, Jane Keever Miller; one brother-in-law, Edgar Miller of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Marvin; and one brother-in-law, Warren McKenzie. He spent his early childhood in Seymour until his family moved to Brazil in 1936. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1943 and attended Indiana State University. His interests included guns, hunting, fishing, politics and the performances of the Brazil Concert Band. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, a former Republican precinct committeeman, former president of the Brazil Band parents, a former Clay County reserve deputy and a former deacon, elder and trustee of the First Presbyterian Church. A World War II combat infantryman, he made the D-Day Invasion June 6, 1944, in one of the first waves of Allied Forces to land on Utah Beach. He was assigned to the 90th Infantry Division, where he served as First Scout and encountered much combat. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received in the Normandy hedgerow county, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the French Croix de Guerre with Palm, the European Theater of Operations Medal with Bronze Arrowhead for spearheading the invasion, the French Cross of the Combatant, the French Medal for the Liberation of France, The Good Conduct Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He attained the rank of technical sergeant. For more than 20 years he shared his combat experiences with the sixth graders of Greencastle Middle School. At his request, cremation is scheduled. A memorial service, with military honors will be scheduled for a later date. Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Brazil Concert Band, 8924 N. Kennedy's Crossing Road, Brazil, IN 47834. Moore Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Dorothy Helen Summers

BRAZIL - Dorothy Helen Summers, 61, of Brazil died at 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She worked as a cook at the Clayton Cafe for several years. She was born July 6, 1942, to Johnie E. Bryan and Dorothy Mae Batchlor Bryan. Her husband, Enos Q. Summers, died earlier. Survivors include three sons, Nathan Summers and his wife, Shonda and Forrest Summers and his wife, Beth, all of Plainfield and Shane Summers and his wife, Andi of Brazil; one brother, Ernest W. Bryan and his wife, Nancy of Brazil; four half brothers, Robert G. Bryan and his wife, Reba, Terry M. Bryan and his wife, Karen, Johnie A. Bryan and Brady L. Bryan and his wife, Arlene, all of Brazil; three stepsisters, Janice Summers and Sue Hyde, both of Brazil and Theresa Hyde of Turner; her companion of seven years, Mitchell B. Jackson; five grandchildren, Kenneth, Jesse, Joshua, Tara and Alyssa Summers; six step grandchildren; and 27 nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, Johnie and Cora Bryan; and two aunts, Geraldine Bryan McIntire and Maxine Bryan. She was a 1961 graduate of Brazil High School, a member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 419 of Plainfield and attended Brazil United Pentecostal Church. Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Moore Funeral Home, with The Rev. Carl Davis officiating. Burial is in Stilesville cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Patricia T. Patrick Sowards

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Patricia T. Patrick Sowards, 58, of East Lansing, Mich., died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, in Sparrow Hospital in East Lansing. She was the academic enrichment coordinator of the Office of Support Services at Michigan State University. She was born April 21, 1945, in Robbins Field, Ga., to Thomas M. Patrick and Frances Sferra Patrick. Survivors include her husband, Steven W. Sowards; her mother, Frances Sferra Bean of Bound Brook, N.J.; her stepmother, Ann Patrick of Terre Haute; and one brother, Jack of Bloomington, Ind. She was preceded in death by her father; and one brother, Miles Patrick. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University, where she worked as assistant director of Collins Living-Learning Center. She served the Episcopal Church both locally and nationally in support of ministry in higher education and attended All Saints Episcopal Church in East Lansing. Memorial services were Saturday, April 3, 2004, in All Saints Episcopal Church in East Lansing, with the Rev. Edward W. Jones, retired bishop of the Indianapolis Diocese, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Canterbury MSU Campus Ministry. The Holt-Delhi Chapel of Estes-Leadley Co. of Holt, Mich., assisted with arrangements.

Anne E. Kost Cantrell

Anne E. Kost Cantrell, 58, of Terre Haute died at 10:16 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, in her residence. She was born Nov. 30, 1945, in Vigo County to Dan Kost and Pauline Stepro. Survivors include her husband, Roy Cantrell; one son, Sean Griffin and his wife Michelle; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Ernie Strader and Shelly and David Strader; two sisters, Danna Kost and Barb Day and her husband Terry; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Jo Bowman, and Butch and Doris Bowman; eight grandchildren, Raychel Hatcher, Anna Hatcher, Zack Hatcher, Chelsea Strader, Curt Crowder, Georgia Rooksberry, Jake Strader and Samantha Strader; and one great-granddaughter, Molly Anne Fagg. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, on Nov. 14, 2003. Special thanks to Dr. Gopala and Sharon Woods, Dr. Rao (Miss Beautiful), Dr. Schmitz and Kevin, who was always waiting with a wheelchair. Most of all, special thanks to the whole Hospice team and Loretta Romanyk (our angel) and Amee Boucher. You're truly precious people. There are no services or visitation. Cremation is scheduled with burial in Bethesda cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 600 S. First St., Terre Haute, IN 47807.

William "Mike" Curley, 53, of West Terre Haute died at 9:50 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, in Union Hospital's emergency room. He had formerly been an ironworker with the International Iron Workers Union and was currently working as a laborer. He was born April 23, 1950, in Vigo County to John Curley and Pauline Vermillion Curley. Survivors include his wife, Charlene Curley; one son, Michael Patrick Curley and his wife Angela of Terre Haute; one grandson, Michael Patrick Curley Jr.; and an aunt and uncle, Christine and Donald Hayes of St. Mary-of-the-Woods. He was preceded in death by his parents, who had formerly lived in St. Mary-of-the-Woods; a daughter, Lauri Ann Curley; and a grandson, Jonathon Michael Curley. He was a member of the Young Men's Club in West Terre Haute. According to his wishes, cremation has been scheduled. There are no services or visitation. Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Mildred H. Frey

Mildred H. Frey, 91, of Terre Haute died at 2:40 p.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, in Royal Oaks Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. She was employed with the Vigo County School Corporation. She was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Brazil to John Norton and Inez Bettiz. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Frey. Survivors include one son, Terry N. Frey. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Brett Wilson officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Tuesday.

Myrtle Ellen Logan Boyd

BRAZIL - Myrtle Ellen Logan Boyd, 98, of Brazil died Sunday, April 4, 2004, in St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She taught at Reelsville Elementary School, retiring in 1973. She was born Dec. 31, 1905, in Putnam County to John H. Landes and M. Alice Girton Landes. Her first husband, Everett Logan, whom she married April 25, 1943, died Oct. 23, 1964; her second husband, Joseph E. Boyd, died April 15, 1988. Survivors include one stepson, Joe E. Boyd of Florida; two step grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Skomp of Indianapolis and Nellie Murray of Terre Haute; two brothers, Albert Landes of Brazil and Virgil Landes of Reelsville; many nieces and nephews, and many extended family members. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Rachel Duzenberry and Iva Miller; and two brothers, Lester Landes and Irvin Landes. She attended grade school through the eighth grade at the former West Union School in Putnam County, two years at Reelsville High School, then graduated from Van Buren High School in 1924. She received her bachelor's degree from Indiana State University in 1942 and her master's degree from DePauw University in 1967. She taught her first seven weeks in Parke County and the next 47 years in Putnam County. She attended church regularly at Northside Church of Christ in Terre Haute. She was a past member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 238. On May 6, 1971, the library at Reelsville Elementary School was dedicated and named in her honor. She was a devoted teacher, enjoyed cooking and feeding family and friends. She was well-known for making noodles, peanut butter fudge and candy. Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Lawson-Slack Funeral Home, with Mitch Davis officiating. Burial is in Croys Creek cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and before services Thursday.

Owen Laughlin James

CENTER POINT - Owen Laughlin James, 87, of Center Point died at 9:10 a.m.. Saturday, April 3, 2004, in Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility. He had been a resident there since November 2003. He was a grain and livestock farmer and also had dairy cows for many years. He was born March 10, 1917, in Clay County to Ben Oney James and Lucy Laughlin James. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Ewbank James, whom he married Dec. 27, 1936; two daughters, Myrna Heffner and her husband Joe of Center Point, and Myna Eaglin-Sharp and her husband Thomas of Brazil; one son, the Rev. Myron James and his wife Sharon of Harrodsburg; eight grandchildren, Marty Heffner and his wife Chris, Marlon Heffner and his wife, Tina, John Owen James and his wife Michele, Jeana Graham, Janeece Stringer and her husband Bret, Rebecca James, Aaron James and Daniel Laughlin Eaglin; 16 great-grandchildren, Austin James Heffner, Mallory Heffner, Meredith Heffner, Ian Heffner, Orry Heffner, Quinton Heffner, Michael James, Vincent James, Jamie Graham, Jessica Graham, Dallas Graham, Lacey Graham, Jarett Stringer, Miles Stringer, Casey Stringer and Lucas James; several nieces and nephews; and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Dessie Thompson, Neva Chambers and Tina Anderson; and one grandson, James Heffner, in infancy. He was born and raised on the family farm in Center Point and lived there all his life. He was well-known across the United States for his ability to train Belgium horse teams. He grew up using horse teams to plow, and still used them until 1956, when he bought his first four-row planter. He developed and used his ability to train horses for use from the state of Maine, through the Eastern and Midwestern states. He last participated in horse pulls in 2002 at the Indiana State Fair and in Saline City. He has received trophies in all categories of horse pulls throughout the U.S. He was a lifelong member of Center Point United Methodist Church. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church, with the Rev. Randy Slavens officiating. Burial is in Center Point cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in French Funeral Home in Brazil, and one hour before services Wednesday in the church. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Center Point United Methodist Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Violet W. Rose

BRAZIL - Violet W. Rose, 89, of Brazil died at 5:12 a.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, in Holly Hill Health Care, following an extended illness. She was a homemaker all of her active life. She was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Clay County to Edward Nevins and Anna Cooper Nevins. Her husband, Millard J. Rose, died July 4, 1994. Survivors include one sister, Mary J. Fisher of Brazil; several nieces and nephews; and a large extended family. She also was preceded in death by five brothers, Joe Nevins, Russell Nevins, Bill Nevins, Earl Nevins and Frederick Nevins, who died in infancy; and three sisters, Nellie Pope, Blanche Croy, and Edna Nevins, who died in infancy. She was the last surviving charter member of Way of the Cross Assembly of God, was a diligent worker and Sunday School teacher until her health failed. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Lawson-Slack Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jimmy Dowers, pastor of her church, officiating. Burial is in Clearview cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Lillie Mae Blake

Lillie Mae Blake, 64, of Terre Haute died at 3 a.m. Thursday, April, 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was owner and operator of the former Patches Daycare in Terre Haute. She was born June 13, 1939, in Waynesboro, Ga., to Rosie Velma Jordan and Willie E. Williams. Survivors include her husband of 28 years, Francis "Peanut" M. Blake; one son, Charles G. Holiday II of Linthicum, Md.; two daughters, Rena J. Blake and Donna W. Blake, both of Terre Haute; one stepdaughter, Monika Spinks and her husband Larry of Italy; one step granddaughter, Leslie A. Ray of Seattle; two brothers, Gregory V. Waters and his wife Alicia, and Clarence Waters, all of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Melanie Walker and her husband of Lansing, Mich.; and Valerie Williams of Wyandanch, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Mary Jeannette Cheatem of Terre Haute; one brother-in-law, Thomas A. Blake of Terre Haute; and a host of cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents. She attended high school in Waynesboro. After graduation, she attended Fort Valley State College in Fort Valley, Ga. She was a member of American Legion Post 340 Ladies Auxiliary and Second Missionary Baptist Church, where she was once a member of the usher board and the choir. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church, with the Rev. Cleytus D. Malone officiating. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in the church. Russell Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Fred Dettmer

Fred Dettmer, 66, of Hawk Point, Mo., died Friday, April 2, 2004, in Lincoln County Medical Center in Troy, Mo. He was born Sept. 27, 1937, in St. Louis to Robert Herman Dettmer and Nola Chastain Dettmer. Survivors include his wife, Betty Majors Dettmer; five sons, John E. Llamas, Donald Llamas, Michael Llamas, Charles Llamas and Timothy Crowl; one daughter, Madonna Lawrance; 25 grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Young and her husband Edward; one brother, Patrick Dettmer and his wife Sharon; a sister-in-law, Fanny Wagle; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins, aunts and uncles. Services are 3 p.m. Tuesday in Thomas Funeral Home. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. There is no visitation.

Orville Thomas Ferrand Sr.

Orville Thomas Ferrand Sr., 97 of Terre Haute died Saturday, April 3, 2004, in Meadows Manor North. He was born Dec. 7, 1906, in Putnam County to Lawrence and Nettie Ferrand. His wife, Wanda V. Ferrand, died Nov. 24, 1980. Survivors include two sons, Donald Ferrand and Robert Ferrand; one daughter, Patricia Banks; one stepson, Dan Bundy; three stepdaughters, Sharon Tyler, Carmen Arend and Ellen Kerins; 28 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence McGlothlin; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday in Roselawn Funeral Home. Burial is in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Monday.

Dora Lee 'Dodie' Schommer Johnson

Dora Lee "Dodie" Johnson, 69, of Terre Haute died at 11:12 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in her residence, following a three-month illness. She was a homemaker and was the advertising secretary for the former Meis Department Store. She was born March 28, 1935, in North Terre Haute to Harold E. Schommer and Glenna "Ruth" Haase Schommer. Her husband, Peter E. Johnson, died March 31, 2003. Survivors include two sons, Rick A. Johnson and his wife, Sandra and Peter Andrew Johnson, all of Terre Haute; one daughter, Leslie Johnson Valandingham and her husband, David of Terre Haute; one grandson, Erick Johnson and his wife, Tracy; six granddaughters, Ronda Goodale and her husband, Shane, Jodi Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Mackenzie Valandingham, Taylor Valandingham and Sydney Valandingham, all of Terre Haute; two great-grandsons, Richy Johnson and McCartney Johnson; three great-granddaughters, Mercedes Johnson, Briana Johnson and Cayley Johnson; one brother, Larry Schommer and his wife, Ada; one brother-in-law, Nils Johnson and his wife, Lois; two other sisters-in-law, Nancy Johnson Smith and Elizabeth Johnson Mercer; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Ronald Ray Johnson. She graduated from Otter Creek High School and was on the cradle roll at North Terre Haute Christian Church. Earlier, she was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone. Her lunch group of friends, calling themselves "The 53 Girls, " hold places of honor; they are Carole Daughtery, Virginia Davis, Wilma Jones, Betty Weber and Marilyn Mier. Services are 11 a.m. Monday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Maris Walters officiating. Graveside services will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, with pallbearers Rick Johnson, Peter A. Johnson, David Valandingham, Erick Johnson, Kurt Johnson and Nils Johnson. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.
