Joseph Anthony Sciangola

Joseph Anthony Sciangola, 74, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in his residence. He had worked for General Motors in New Jersey, Anaconda and Mary Lane Apartments. He was born Nov. 28, 1929, in St. Louis to Sam Sciangola and Concettina "Jenny" Figliolo. Survivors include three sons, Wayne T. Sciangola and Larry J. Sciangola, both of Trenton, N.J., and E. Sam Sciangola of Princeton, N.J.; one sister, Madeline Nicholas and her husband Tom of Terre Haute; an uncle, Mike Figliolo and his wife Opal of Jacksonville, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Michael Sciangola, Michelle Daley, Jessica Sciangola and Stephanie Sciangola; two nephews, Sam J. Nicholas of St. Louis and Thomas M. Nicholas of Terre Haute; and one niece, Sharon. He was a 1949 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and an Army veteran. He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 541, Francis Vigo American Italian Club, and Krietenstein Post 104 American Legion. Services are 9:30 a.m. Monday in the church, with the Rev. Russell Zint officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery, with graveside military rites by American Legion Post 104. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave.

Wanda Larew Wells

Wanda Larew Wells, 79, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Terre Haute died Saturday, March 13, 2004, of cancer. She taught piano in her home in Lakeland until retiring in 1987. She was born Aug. 15, 1924, in Clinton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard S. Wells, whom she married in 1948. Survivors include three sons, Steven R. Wells of Longmont, Colo., Michael S. Wells of Lakeland, and Larry A. Wells of Sanford, Fla.; one sister, Marilyn Proctor of Newark, Del.; her stepmother, Mabel Larew of Terre Haute; and six grandchildren. She grew up in Terre Haute, graduated from Pimento High School and was a 1946 graduate of Indiana State Teachers college. She was a traveling music teacher in five Harrison Township elementary schools. Following their wedding, she and her husband, Richard, moved to Lakeland. She was a member of Florida State Music Teachers Association, National Music Teachers Association, Ridge Music Teachers Association, Sigma Alpha Iota and a former member of Tuesday Music Club. She also was a member of the Symphony Guild and Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she was a pianist and a member of the choir. Services were March 18, 2004, in the church in Lakeland. Dukes-Steen Funeral Home, Lakeland, assisted with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823.

Peter Watson Vanevenhoven

CLINTON - Peter Watson Vanevenhoven, 64, of Clinton died peacefully at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 31. 2004, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, after a hard-fought battle with kidney disease. He was a retired senior research scientist for Eli Lilly. He was born June 25, 1939, in Longview, Wash., to Robert and Dorothy Vanevenhoven. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Kati, whom he married June 9, 1962, in Menasha, Wis.; one son and daughter-in-law, Karl and Carol of Selah, Wash.; two sisters, Julie Mueller and her husband Kurt of Puyallup, Wash., and Linda Richie and her husband Bill of St. Cloud, Minn.; two brothers, Chris Vanevenhoven and his wife Debbie of Oshkosh, Wis., and Jim Vanevenhoven of Menasha, Wis.; several aunts, uncles and cousins; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his birth parents; and his stepmothers, Margaret and Vivian. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin and then went on to receive his Master of Science degree in biochemistry from Ohio State University. He joined Lilly in 1967 as a biochemist in Indianapolis, was assigned to the Clinton Laboratories in August 1969, as the plant was being built. He enjoyed a 27-year career working in technical services for animal health manufacturing and is known as "the main man, " the scientist who most influenced the development of several products for Lilly. He was a member of Rho Chi pharmaceutical honor society, ACS, National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited and Izaac Walton Clinton Chapter. He loved the outdoors and spent time during his life sailing and hunting with his beloved yellow Labrador, Babe. His hobbies included photography, travel, fishing, shooting, faceting gemstones, woodworking and attending auctions. He received dialysis and care from many special people over the past nine years at the Kidney Center of Terre Haute. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial services. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the American Kidney Foundation. Mattox-Wood Funeral Home in Terre Haute assisted with arrangements.

Vivian Irene Anderson

Vivian Irene Anderson, 79, of Indianapolis, and formerly of Terre Haute, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, in Indianapolis. She was born July 27, 1924, in Hollywood, Calif., to Charles Herbert Gibbons and Pearl Jones Gibbons. Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen Taylor Cackler; four grandchildren, Cynthia Coleman, Debora Harding, Gayle Robinson and Jennifer Cackler; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Coleman, Taylor Robinson, and Kadin and Sam Harding; one sister, Coloma Miller, of Terre Haute; and one brother, Harold Gibbons. She was preceded in death by her parents. Hendryx Mortuary, 11636 E. Washington Street in Indianapolis, is handling the arrangements.

Corrie M. Beel

Corrie M. Beel, 98, of West Terre Haute, died at 4:45 a.m. June 4, 2004, in Meadows North in Terre Haute. She was born Feb. 11, 1906, in Kentucky to Oscar Bright and Evie Davis Bright. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Beel. Survivors include one son, Jerry L. Beel of Owensville; two daughters, H. Clarene Fisher of West Terre Haute and Virgina Joan Mace of Livingston, Texas; one sister, Mayme Rice of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son, James Lester Beel; two sisters, Bessie Worthington and Rosalie Statzer; and two brothers, Warren Joseph Bright and William Clardy Bright. Services are 10:30 a.m Monday in Valley Funeral Home in West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Pete Lafko officiating. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home. Burial is in Bethesda cemetery.

Sonny L. Chaney

Sonny L. Chaney, 61, of Terre Haute, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2004, at her home. She was born Oct. 9, 1942, in Terre Haute to Earl and Marjorie Meissel. She was retired from Columbia House after 33 years as associate director of the Video Club. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Carl R. Chaney; two sons, Mark and Brett Gilmore, both of Terre Haute; seven stepchildren, Gary, Larry, Mark and Keith Chaney, Pam Lovellette, Vicki Jean, and Kathy Cunning, all of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Crystal and Tyler Gilmore; several step grandchildren; three cousins, Robert Meissel, Tommy Lou Brosche and Perry Brown, all of Terre Haute. She was an avid member of the American Rose Society, the East Coast KOI and Water Gardening Association, and the National Antique and Art Dealers Association. She also belonged to American Legion Post No. 104 and the Marine Corps League. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in Roselawn Funeral Home with the Rev. Ellen Nolte Racheter officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the or the American Cancer Society.

Michael J. Jones

Michael J. Jones, 57, of Terre Haute died at 5 a.m. Friday, June 4, 2004, in his residence. He was retired from Eli Lilly, Clinton facility. He was born Dec. 7, 1946 in Clinton to Joseph F. Jones and Evelyn E. Martin Jones. Survivors include his companion, Irene Austin; a daughter, Lisa Jenkins and her husband Lloyd, of Clinton; a son, Craig Jones of Indianapolis; his mother, of Port Charlotte, Fla., a sister, Nancy Sanders and her husband David of Terre Haute; a brother, Dale Jones of Bono; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father. According to his wishes, cremation has been scheduled with a memorial service to be announced at a later date. Fitzpatrick-Pearce is assisting with the arrangements.

Ruth E. Hoss Fell

Ruth E. Hoss Fell, 85, of Terre Haute, died at 1:45 a.m. Friday June 4, 2004, in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She had worked for R.C.A. in Bloomington, Ind., for Rose-Hulman as a housekeeper, and for Ivy Tech in the bookstore. She was born Aug. 24, 1918 in Hyatt Station to Charles D. Hoss and Isis M. Gines Hoss. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas R. Fell, in 1980. Survivors include one son, Douglas Fell and his wife Laura, of West Terre Haute; two daughters, Rhonda Cloud and her husband Dan of Elkhart, and Grace Krackenberger and her husband Gary, of Terre Haute; three brothers, John Hoss of Washington, Ind., Paul Hoss of Mooresville, and David Hoss of Orleans; five sisters, Mary Zackmire of Terre Haute, Eleanor Blackmer of Cherry Hill, Ill., Charlene Brazel of Frankfort, Ind., Marilyn Weaver of Belvedere, Ill., and Sharon Malvonavo of Roswell, N.M.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents, and four sisters, June Rose Hoss, Dorothy Hoss, Virginia Fell and Geniveve Hudson. She was a member of Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for many years. She also was an active member of the Woman's Missionary Society. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with Rev. Monte Vincent officiating. Burial is in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church.

Reba Jean Johnson

Our precious Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Reba Jean Johnson, 77, of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 3, 2004. She was retired from Columbia Records. She was born Nov. 5, 1926 in Sullivan Co. to Harold Clinton Wheaton and Ethel Leota Ring Wheaton. Her husband, Jack Johnson, preceded her in death on March 12, 1987. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Tim Morgan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Connie Johnson and Roger and Cindy Johnson; eight grandchildren, Rich Harden and his wife Lacey, Babs "Babsie" Edwards and her husband, Matt, Beth Knezevich and her husband Gene, Larry Joe Johnson and his wife, Michele, Troy Johnson and his wife Cindy, Carmen Jean Dailey and her husband, Mike, and Christina and Derek Johnson; fifteen great-grandchildren, Noel, Andre Jackson, and Elijah Harden, Grace Edwards, Viviane "Ms. Elle" Edwards, Blake Price, Brandon, and Bailey Knezevich, Kyle, Kaleb, Ashley, Travis and Adam Johnson, Riliegh-Mae Marshall, and Mika Dailey; two sisters, Joan Buczyrski and Ruth Luthi; four sisters-in-law, Barb, Ella and Marge Johnson and Sally Jo Corbin; three brothers-in-law, Ed Buczyrski, Jim Johnson and Hugh Corbin; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She also was preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bishop and Gertrude Johnson; a great-granddaughter, Kristen Johnson; two sisters, Ellen Pope and Ernestine Adams; seven brothers-in-law, Garland Adams, Denmon Pope, Ed Hayes, Fred Luthi, Bill, Claude and Rex Johnson, and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Jean and Betty Johnson. She was an active member of First Nazarene Church and her Sunday school class. Services are 1:30 p.m. Monday, in the First Nazarene Church with Rev. Larry Mathias officiating. Burial is in Center Ridge cemetery in Sullivan. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Monday in the church. Fitzpatrick-Pearce assisted with the arrangements.

Malcolm A. Steele, Jr.

Malcolm A. Steele, Jr., 87, of Terre Haute, died Monday May 31, 2004, after a long illness in Richmond, Va. He began his 50 year service with the United States government first as an inspector of Pratt and Whitney airplane engines at Ford Motor Company's River Rouge Plant in Dearborn, Mich., followed by three years of service in the United States Army. While in uniform, he was assigned to a group headed by Dr. Edwin P. Hubble which was preparing for the construction and operation of the supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnels at Ballistics Research Laboratories at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen Md. Dr. Hubble requested that Mr. Steele remain as civilian Chief of Operations in 1946. During his tenure at BRL, Mr. Steele worked on the development of the Schleiren camera and other hypersonic data recording instrumentation essential in testing and perfecting projectile and aircraft flight, which ushered in the space age developments of the 1960s and '70s. Mr. Steele served many capacities at BRL before retiring in 1993. He was born October 22, 1916, to Malcolm A. and Nelle Filbeck Steele, grandson of Worth B. and Delia Patterson Steele. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ruth; a son, Dr. Malcom Steele, III, of Nashville, Tenn.; a son, John Worth Steele; and a daughter, Sandra Steele Glasheen, both of Glen Allen, Va.; and five grandchildren, Margaret, Will, and Anne Steele and Chad and Sterling Glasheen. Mr. Steele graduated from State High School in Terre Haute and from Rose Hulman, receiving a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1939. He was a life member of the National Parent-Teacher Association and the former treasurer of the Maryland State PTA. He also was a member of Ashlar Lodge No. 91 F & A.M. in Dearborn, Mich., and was recently honored for his 60 years of Masonic service. A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Christ Church Episcopal, 5000 Pouncey Tract Road, in Glen Allen. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church's "Praying It Forward Fund." Arrangements were made by Bennett Funeral Home in Glen Allen.

Helen Ann Suttle

Helen Ann Suttle, 68, of Terre Haute, died at 12:05 a.m. on June 3, 2004, in her residence. She was formerly a singer, musician, songwriter and composer. She had appeared at several clubs and lounges in the Wabash Valley, and at Pat O'Brien's in the French Quarter. She had performed with Boone Dunbar and Jim Nabors, and the Imperials recorded one of her songs, "Il'l Let Nothing Separate Me From The Love of God". She was born Oct. 19, 1935, in Oaktown to Charles Ellis Holt and Helen Dunn Holt. She is survived by her husband, J. Howard Settle. Other survivors include three sons, Randall Lee McNeill and his fiancee, Joanne Chesterfield, both of Terre Haute, Steven Ray McNeill and his wife Susan of Indianapolis, and Clinton J. McNeill of Memphis, Tenn.; one daughter, Debra Ann Mason of Indianapolis; two sisters, Ruth Holt and Nancy Gambill, both of Sullivan; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nephews and two nieces. She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild. She was a graduate of Farmersburg High School. She was a member of the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame and the Terre Haute Jazz Club. Cremation is scheduled. Callahan Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Jerry Lee Barrett

CENTERPOINT - Jerry Lee Barrett, 57, of Centerpoint, died June 3, 2004 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He had previously worked at Allison's, then at Peabody Coal for 23 years as a heavy equipment operator. When the mine closed at Universal he began the business known as Barrett and Son Excavating. The last several years he had worked for the City of Brazil to install the sewer treatment plant and for the Center Point and Knightsville water and sewer treatment. He was born October 9, 1946, in Brazil to Robert and Dortha Megenhardt Barrett. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Shields Barrett, of Center Point, whom he married on September 1, 1967. Other survivors include his father, Robert Barrett of Cory; his mother Dortha "Dottie" Barrett Urbain; one daughter and son-in-law Stacie and Scott Ooley of Center Point; one son and daughter-in-law Brad and Rhonda Barrett of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Jacob and Austin Ooley, Tristan and Haliah Barrett, Kyeton and Landon Pettijohn, and Michaela Kaiser. He was preceded in death by his step-father, Levi Urbain; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Betty and Robert Shields. Mr. Barrett was raised in Center Point, attended Ashboro Elementary and graduated with the Brazil High School Class of 1964. He was a devoted son, husband, dad and grandfather. He enjoyed traveling with family, movies and fishing. Friends may gather Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at French Funeral Home in Brazil. At his request, cremation will take place with private family services at a later date. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department.

Max W. Markle

JASONVILLE - Max W. Markel, 76, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., and formerly of Jasonville, died Thursday June 3, 2004 in Lawrenceburg. He was employed by Citizen's Gas and Coke Utility for over 26 years. He was born May 8, 1928 to Ward "Pappy" Markle and Donna Markle. His wife of 41 years, Ruth Harlan Markle of Lawrenceburg, survives him. Other survivors include one sister-in-law, Gloria Harlan of Lawrenceburg; two brothers-in-law, Burt Harlan and wife Jane, and Blackie Austin and wife Carole, all of Lawrenceburg; two aunts, Marie and Joann Markle; several cousins, including Jack and Joann Herring, Bob and Alberta Thomas, and William and Phyliss English; seven nieces; four nephews; two great-nieces; and 11 great-nephews. He also had a very special relationship with Shannon and Dotty Morrison. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois Coffey; and an aunt, Dorothy Helderman. Markle was a graduate of the Switz City High School Class of 1946. He attended New Prospect Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg, and was a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church near Jasonville. Max became a member of the Masonic Lodge in 1960, and after moving to Lawrenceburg in 1994, carried a dual membership by joining the Mimosa Lodge No. 542. He also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star No. 103 and life member at the Lawrenceburg Veterans of Foreign Wars. Max served two years in the U.S. Army with most of his time being spent in Korea. Max was a man that shared his thoughts and love with many throughout the different locations in which he lived. Max has many, many family members and friends who will truly miss him. Services are 3 p.m. Monday at McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home, 631 E. Main St. in Jasonville with the Rev. Harold Thomas officiating. Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg, and 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home and continuing one hour prior to service time on Monday.

John Charles Alter

John Charles Alter, 88, of Terre Haute died at 10:58 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was a retired accountant with Indiana State University Business Office. He was born Aug. 25, 1915 in Fort Wayne to Joseph and Georganna Alter. His wife, Rosemary Smith Alter, whom he married April 21, 1940, preceded him in death on April 29, 1988. His second wife, Mary Ellen Krug Alter, whom he married in 1990, preceded him in death on Jan. 16, 2004. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Darrel Howard of Terre Haute; two granddaughters, Jennifer Brackney and her husband Dan, of Daphne, Ala.; and Julie Howard of Avon; one great-granddaughter, Grace Elizabeth Brackney; one step-daughter, Judy Krug of Moorehead, Ky.; one step-son and his wife, Tony and Anna Krug of Jefferson City, Tenn.; and three step-grandchildren, Annaka, Benjamin, and Caleb Krug. He also was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ray Alter; and one sister, Catherine Glock. Services are 2 p.m. today in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home. Visitation is noon until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association.
