Helen Ann Suttle

Helen Ann Suttle, 68, of Terre Haute died at 12:05 a.m. Thursday, June 3, 2004, in her residence. She was formerly a singer, musician, songwriter and composer. She had appeared at several clubs and lounges in the Wabash Valley, and at Pat O'Brien's in the French Quarter. She had performed with Boone Dunbar and Jim Nabors, and the Imperials recorded one of her songs, "I'll Let Nothing Separate Me From The Love of God." She was born Oct. 9, 1935, in Oaktown to Charles Ellis Holt and Helen Dunn Holt. She is survived by her husband, J. Howard Suttle. Other survivors include three sons, Randall Lee McNeill and his fiancee, Joanne Chesterfield, both of Terre Haute, Steven Ray McNeill and his wife, Susan, of Indianapolis, and Clinton J. McNeill of Memphis, Tenn.; one daughter, Debra Ann Mason of Indianapolis; two sisters, Ruth Holt and Nancy Gambill, both of Sullivan; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three nephews; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild. She was a graduate of Farmersburg High School. She was a member of the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame and the Terre Haute Jazz Club. Cremation is scheduled. Callahan Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Wanda June Campbell

Wanda June Campbell, 76, of Farmersburg died at 3:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2004, in Shakamak Good Samaritan Center in Jasonville. She was born May 9, 1928 in Greene County to William H. Hope and Marie Conway Hope. She had been a cook in several restaurants in the Terre Haute area. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas K. Campbell Sr. in December 2001. Survivors include two sons, Thomas K. Campbell Jr. and Edward Campbell; two sisters, Juanita Fish and Liz Johnson; one grandson, Michael Lammers; and four great-grandchildren, Amy McBroom, Joshua Hart, Ryder Acuna and Carson Acuna. She also was preceded in death by her parents. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Monday. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery, Soldiers Circle, where her husband is buried. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with the arrangements.

Paul Wassill

Paul Wassill, 81, of Terre Haute died in his residence on Wednesday, June 2, 2004. He was a pressman for Bemis Co. for 27 years. He was born July 12, 1922, to John and Susie Chlyebak Wassill in Youngstown, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 40 years; one stepdaughter, Eloise Dove, of Terre Haute; one stepson, Ben Dove, and his wife, Melinda, of Terre Haute; three grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Wassill, Susie Bramble, and her husband, Robert, all of Terre Haute, and Helen Bechtol of Wabash; one brother, John Wassill and his wife, Virginia, of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, a lifetime member of American Legion Post No. 104 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 972, and the Disabled American Veterans. Services are 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Roselawn Funeral Home with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park with Father Russell Zint officiating. Visitation is 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. VFW Post No. 972 will conduct military services.

Malcom A. Steele Jr.

Malcom A. Steele Jr., 87, of Terre Haute died Monday, May 31, 2004, in Richmond, Va., after a long illness. He was born Oct. 22, 1916, to Malcom A. and Nelle Filbeck Steele. He began his 50 year service with the United States government first as an inspector of Pratt and Whitney airplane engines at Ford Motor Co.'s River Rouge Plant in Dearborn, Mich., followed by three years of service in the United States Army. While in uniform, he was assigned to a group headed by Edwin P. Hubble which was preparing for the construction and operation of the supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnels at Ballistics Research Laboratories at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Md. Hubble requested that Steele remain as civilian chief of operations in 1946. During his tenure at the lab, Steele worked on the development of the Schleiren camera and other hypersonic data recording instrumentation essential in testing and perfecting projectile and aircraft flight, which ushered in the space age developments of the 1960s and '70s. Steele served many capacities at the lab before retiring in 1993. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ruth; two sons, Malcom Steele III of Nashville, Tenn., and John Worth Steele of Glen Allen, Va.; a daughter, Sandra Steele Glasheen of Glen Allen; and five grandchildren, Margaret, Will, and Anne Steele and Chad and Sterling Glasheen. Steele graduated from State High School in Terre Haute and from Rose-Polytechnic Institute, receiving a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering in 1939. He was a life member of the National Parent-Teacher Association and the former treasurer of the Maryland State PTA. He also was a member of Ashlar Lodge No. 91 F&A.M.; in Dearborn, and was recently honored for his 60 years of Masonic service. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Christ Church Episcopal at 5000 Pouncey Tract Road, in Glen Allen. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church's "Praying It Forward Fund." Arrangements were made by Bennett Funeral Home in Glen Allen.

Haylee Dawn Switzer

Haylee Dawn Switzer, infant daughter of Terry D. Switzer Jr. and Paula M. Switzer of West Terre Haute, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. Survivors include her parents; one brother, Cody R. Switzer ; paternal grandparents, Terry and Irene Switzer of New Goshen, and Nancy Switzer of West Terre Haute; maternal grandparents, Paul and Janice Beasley of West Terre Haute; paternal great-grandparents, Jack and Betty Switzer and Leona Maples, all of West Terre Haute; maternal great-grandfather, Willis Cooper of Terre Haute; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal great-grandfather, Howard Maples. Services were Thursday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home. The Rev. Jamie Switzer officiated. Burial followed with a graveside service in Pleasant View cemetery in West Terre Haute.

Jesse E. Smith Jr.

SULLIVAN - Jesse E. Smith Jr., 80, of Sullivan died at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at Miller's Merry Manor. He was a retired operations manager for Rider Truck Lines and a former employee of the C & E. I. Railroad for 15 years. He retired in 1986. He was born Sept. 4, 1923, in Sullivan to Jesse E. Smith Sr. and Martha H. Bell Smith. He is survived by two sisters, Miriam Billman of Terre Haute and Martha Susan Wilkey of Tucson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Richard Smith. He was a 1941 graduate of Sullivan High School and attended the Indiana Teachers College for three years. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. He also was a member of the Sullivan Masonic Lodge No. 263 and the Scottish Rite. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan with the Rev. Timothy Fleace officiating. Burial is in Center Ridge cemetery in Sullivan. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Veneta I. Amerman

Veneta I. Amerman, 84, of Terre Haute, died Monday afternoon, May 31, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided very comfortably for the last several weeks. She was a homemaker. She was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Terre Haute to William H. Boothe Sr. and Rosetta Woodruff Boothe. Her husband, Jack B. Amerman, whom she married Sept. 7, 1939, preceded her in death on July 3, 1981. Survivors include one son, Richard L. Amerman, and his wife, Janet; two daughters, Donna Mahan, and her husband William, and Rose Marie Snow; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson, all of Terre Haute; one brother, William Boothe and his wife Georgia of Riley, two sisters, Betty White, and her husband Otis of Terre Haute, and Ina Lorene Batton of Newburg; two sisters-in-law Eloise Werremeyer and Roberta Watkins of Columbus, Ohio; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and a multitude of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Thomas W. Amerman, who died January 3, 1984, and his wife Catherine "Sug", who died March 21, 1996; and one brother, Lee Roy Boothe, who died June 13, 1998. She was an active member of North Terre Haute Forest Park Bible Church where she served as organist, pianist, music director and teacher for many years. She was a member of Otter Creek Extension Homemakers Club for 42 years and held many offices and served on numerous committees. She and her husband Jack lived for 50 years in the home they built themselves on Isabel Street in North Terre Haute. Recently she had been a resident of Brownstone Manor Apartments on Ohio Street, where she moved in September, 1998, and very much enjoyed the facilities and activities with her friends and neighbors there. Services are 3 p.m. today, in Roselawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gene Jeffers officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services. The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of or the American Cancer Society.

Robert C. Patterson

Robert C. Patterson, 60, of Terre Haute, died at 12:15 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, in his residence. He retired in 1999 from Bethesda Corporation after 121/2 years of employment as Maintenance Supervisor. He was born on April 15, 1944 in Indianapolis to Cola Patterson and Vivian Pyle Patterson. His wife, Beverly Sickles Patterson, of Terre Haute survives him. Other survivors include several sons, Timothy Patterson of Oklahoma, Michael Patterson of Indianapolis, Robert Patterson II of Nashville, Ind., and Dennis, Larry, Jeff, Karl, Kenneth and James Sickles, all of Terre Haute; three daughters, Carla Parker and Theresa Mullins, both of Terre Haute, and Tara Dunn of Indianapolis; one sister, Rae Jean Crossin of Kentucky; a step-mother, Elizabeth Patterson of Georgia, 29 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a Vietnam veteran and served in the United States Army with the 972 Signal Corp. Services are 1 p.m. Friday, June 4 at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home with Rev. John Fischer officiating. Burial will be at Calvary cemetery with military funeral honors conducted by VFW Post No. 972. Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. today at Callahan & Hughes. If friends so desire, memorial contributions can be made to Vista Care Hospice of Terre Haute.

Stephen Jackson Hall

Stephen Jackson Hall, 65, of Terre Haute, died at 11:31 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, in his home. He was born April 30, 1939, in Miami to Ralph Hall and Margaret Jackson Hall. Survivors include his loving wife of 12 years, Kay Carpenter Hall; two sons, Dan Carpenter and his wife, Kerry, of Portland, Ore., and Curt Carpenter and his wife Lori of Terre Haute; one daughter, Renee, of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Marjorie Murr and her husband, Bill, of Arizona; one brother, Harold Hall of Australia; three grandchildren, Alex, Tyler and Sammy; two nieces, Nancy and her husband, Duncan, and Kimberly, both of Australia; and four nephews, Christian of Australia, Brian Hall of North Carolina, and Scott and Ryan Murr. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was educated for 16 years and received a degree from Puget Sound. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Disabled American Veterans, Post 2. Graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m., Highland Lawn Chapel. AM VET Post 2 will perform the service, with the Rev. Bill Herb officiating. Mattox-Ryan is in charge of the arrangements.

Robert E. Ray

Robert E. Ray, 66, of West Terre Haute, died at 3:07 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was formerly employed with Indiana Gas and Chemical Company. He was born April 5, 1938, in Hammond to Robert Ray and Virginia Hall Ray. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Wilkins Ray, whom he married on Aug. 25, 1993, in Las Vegas; a sister, Janet Marshall of West Terre Haute; two sons, Robert P. Ray of Terre Haute and Jeremy Ray of West Terre Haute; a daughter, Jacki Ray of Terre Haute; three stepsons, Norman Brossman and Shane Smith, both of West Terre Haute, and Dusty Correll of San Jose, Calif.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Wreatha Rodriguez. Services are 7:30 p.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home. Cremation has been scheduled. Visitation is 4:30 p.m. to services Friday.

John William Stevens

John William Stevens, 59, of Terre Haute, died Monday May 31, 2004 in his home. He worked at Ivy Hill in the maintenance department. He was born February 22, 1945, in Terre Haute to Thomas and Eloise Wagle Stevens. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Laura Jeffrey Stevens; two sons, John William Stevens, Jr. and Matthew Thomas Stevens, both of Terre Haute; three daughters, Johnna Marie Frakes, Isabella E. Goodpastore and Loretta Lynn Forbes, all of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren, Brookie Frakes, Roxanna Frakes, Danny Joe Forbes, Coty Forbes, Laura E. Forbes, Edward Goodpastore and Zeke Goodpastore; three sisters, Violet and her husband Delbert Watson of Noblesville, Nora Jane Banta and her husband Glenn of Terre Haute, and Wanda Haney and her husband Steve of Terre Haute; three brothers, Raymond Stevens and his wife Violet, Charles Stevens and his wife Margaret, all of Terre Haute, and Pete Stevens and his wife Chris of Oklahoma City; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Stacie Stevens. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church and VFW Post 346. He served during the Cuban conflict and was in the Vietnam War, serving as an E5 with the 101st Airborne Rangers 502. He was also a POW during the Vietnam era. Services are 2 p.m. today in Roselawn Funeral Home with burial in Roselawn Memorial Park. VFW Post 346 will conduct military graveside services. Visitation is noon to 2 p.m. today in Roselawn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to the family.

Lillie A. Sears

Lillie A. Sears, 58, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in her home. She worked for IHM in housekeeping at DADC. She was born Jan. 30, 1946, in Robinson, Ill., to Donald and Agnes Martin Dennis. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Kenneth. Other survivors include one daughter and her husband, Stacey J. and Jeff Bowman of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Lacey Ann Bowman and Jeffrey Kenneth Bowman of Terre Haute; her mother, Agnes Davis of Terre Haute; two brothers, Larry Dennis of Oblong, Ill., and Bob Dennis of Sacramento, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5, in Roselawn Funeral Home with entombment in Roselawn Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until services on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley.

Hayley Dawn Switzer

Hayley Dawn Switzer, infant daughter of Terry D. Swizer Jr. and Paula M. Switzer of West Terre Haute, was stillborn Tuesday, June 1, 2004, in the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis. Survivors include her parents; one brother, Cody R. Frances Hunter

BRAZIL - Frances Hunter, 82, of Brazil died at 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare Facility. She was formerly employed at Continental Carnavar, Arketex, and Eastern Trucking as a traffic manager. She was last employed at Indiana State University Bookstore. She was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Noble Rex Fox and Frances McKinley Pittman Fox. Her husband, Melvin, preceded her in death Sept. 19, 1996. She is survived by her brother and his wife, Charles R. and Maryella Fox of Terre Haute; one niece, Beverly l. Fox of Roswell, Ga; one nephew, Charles E. Fox of Terre Haute; one great-niece, Beth Ventura and her husband, Craig Hall of Atlanta; one great-nephew, Robert Dant of Roswell, Ga.; a cousin, Jane Volz of Bloomington, Ind.; special friends, Marcella Owen and Martha Fox. She also was preceded in death by her parents. Frances had resided in Bethesda Gardens for the past two years and had a host of caregivers there whom she adored. She also loved cats and cat collectibles. Services are Friday at 1 p.m. in French Funeral Home in Brazil, with Greg Comp officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview cemetery in Brazil. Visitation is Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Clay County Humane Shelter.
