Albert 'Gene' Bailey

Albert "Gene" Bailey, 85, of Terre Haute died at 1:42 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was a retired regional construction manager for McDonald's Corp. He was born Sept. 9, 1918, in Highland Park, Mich., to John Bailey and Mary Rozelle Bailey. His wife, Sarah Roberta McLaurine Bailey, whom he married Nov. 24, 1940, died Dec. 11, 1978. Survivors include one son, A. Eugene Bailey and his wife, Patricia, of Raleigh, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Andrea Bailey Mascarinia and her husband Leo, David Eugene Bailey, Beth Bailey Sinkus and her husband, David, and Capt. Bryan Bailey. He also was preceded in death by one son, John McLaurine Bailey, who died Memorial Day weekend in 1987; and one sister, Bessie Dunkel. He was a member of Christ Central Christian Church Disciples of Christ. He received the 1980 Presidential Award from Ray A. Kroc, president and founder of McDonald's Corp., and also received a proclamation from the governor of Indiana proclaiming March 10, 1988, "Gene Bailey Day" in Indiana. He was an avid Indianapolis 500 fan, attending the race 47 years. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Maris Walters. Burial is in Hollywood cemetery in McComb, Miss. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House in Indianapolis

Dorothy Margurite Becherer

Dorothy Margurite Becherer, 94, of Terre Haute died Thursday, May 27, 2004, in Davis Gardens Health Care Center. Arrangements are pending in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home.

Daniel William Grayless

Daniel "Danny" William Grayless, 42, of Terre Haute died Thursday, May 27, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was born July 2, 1961, in Terre Haute to Daniel S. Grayless and Mary Willoughby Grayless. Survivors include his father; two brothers, David E Grayless of Terre Haute and U.S. Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer Four, Dennis C. Grayless and his wife, U.S. Marine Corps Master Sgt. Celia Grayless, of Olathe, Kan.; one sister, Libby Llewellyn of Terre Haute; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many friends, including the Cloven Hoof Motor Cycle Club. He was preceded in death by his mother; maternal grandparents, George and Elizabeth Willoughby; and paternal grandparents, William E. and Winona M. Grayless. He was a member of Sons of the American Legion. He enjoyed collecting NASCAR and Harley Davidson memorabilia. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tim Brown officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home for memorial contributions if friends so desire.

Martha R. Roby

Martha R. "Martie" Roby, 62, of Terre Haute died Saturday morning, May 29, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was a beautician in the Terre Haute area for more than 33 years. She was born Feb. 27, 1942, in Freelandville to Ray Singleton and Hazel Hamke Singleton. Survivors include her former husband, Bernard Roby of Terre Haute; four brothers, Warren Singleton of Tucson, Ariz., Wayne Singleton of West Lafayette, Paul Singleton of Bruceville and Randy Singleton of Washington, Ind.; one sister, Mary Wright of Indianapolis; six nieces and nephews, Renee Singleton, Brian Singleton, Angela Singleton, Ben Singleton, Cameron Wright and Tyler Singleton; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was a graduate of Freelandville High School. She loved cooking, flower gardening, was an avid sports fan of many sports including NASCAR, loved to watch and feed the birds, and enjoyed stained glass and antiques. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Thursday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Joel Burget officiating. Visitation is 1 p.m. until services Thursday.

Tom Wence

Tom Wence, 57, of Terre Haute died Friday, May 28, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was employed by AET as a mechanic for 23 years. He was born June 8, 1946, in Moultrie, Ill., to Jerrold L. Wence and Bertha M. Wence. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn "Kay" Rollins, whom he married Sept. 28, 1973; his mother of Terre Haute; two sons, Tom Brown and Tim Brown; two daughters, Shelly Holt and her husband, David, and Carol Edington and her husband, Brad, all of Brazil; two sisters, Margaret Hodge and her husband, Chet, of Mesa, Ariz., and Wilma Wildman and her husband, Raymond, of Illinois; grandchildren, Josh and Morgan Holt, Kaylee and Emilee Edington; and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Scottish Rite, Masonic Lodge, was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a member of the Shrine. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with his family and not one left without a hug and a kiss. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tim Russell officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with a memorial service at 8 p.m. by Riley Lodge Free & Accepted Masons.

Nova Evelyn Verpleatse

Nova Evelyn Verpleatse, 82, of Terre Haute died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 30, 2004, in Southwood Health & Rehabilitation Center. She retired from U.S. Baking Co. and later retired from CBS Records. She was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Dubois County to John Deel and Irene Dillard Deel. Her husband, Theophile "Bay" Verpleatse, whom she married Aug. 3, 1946, died in 1985. Survivors include one brother, Ottis Deel of Huntingburg; two sisters, Nellie I. Williams of Terre Haute and Mary E. Snelling of Birdseye; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Deel and Howard Deel; and one sister, Amanda Atkins. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Deel officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Wednesday.

James Earl Mason

DUGGER - James Earl Mason, 64, of Dugger died at 4:19 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, in Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a retired miner. He was born Dec. 1, 1939, in Sullivan County to James Lewis Mason and Freda Reeves Mason. Survivors include his wife, Carole Anders Mason; one son, Robert Gene Mason and his wife Stacey of Linton; one daughter, Jeanna Shields of Linton; one brother, Mike Mason of Linton; one half sister, Nikki Mason McCoy of Dugger; two grandchildren, Savannah and Garrett Mason; and very dear friends, Dr. and Mrs. Fariborz Nasseri. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Bertha Jo Mason Kendall; and a brother, Billy Gene Mason. He was a member of Dugger Church of Christ, Dugger Masonic Lodge, Sullivan Elks Lodge, and Scottish Rite and Zorah Shrine, both in Terre Haute, and the Shrine clubs in Sullivan and Greene County. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Newkirk's Funeral Home, with J.B. Smith officiating. Burial is in Dugger cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a Masonic memorial service at 7:30 p.m.

Jack D. Turpen

SULLIVAN - Jack D. Turpen, 74, of Grantsburg, Ill., formerly of Sullivan died at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, in Union County Hospital in Anna, Ill. He was the former vice president of Borg Eriksion Corp., retiring in 1977. He was born Sept. 6, 1929, in Merom to Delmus Duane Turpen and Ruth Mae Pinkston Turpen. His wife, Ruth Keenan Turpen, died in 1997. Survivors include one son, Mark Turpen and his wife, Denise, of Grantsburg; one daughter, Pam Flora and her husband, Dave, of Vienna, Ill.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Tim Turpen, who died in 1985. He also was a grain farmer, cattle rancher and was recognized as a strong businessman. He graduated from Sullivan High School and was a member of Sullivan First Christian Church. He served in the Navy, was a member of Post 139 American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2459, and was the first recipient of the Adam Sajko Award. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Alexander-Kean Funeral Home. with the Rev. Dale Wise officiating. Burial is in Center Ridge cemetery, with full military honors by American Legion Post 139 of Sullivan, Post 197 of Shelburn and Post 298 of Hymera and VFW Post 2459. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday.

Martha R. Roby

Joe Grey Jr.

BRAZIL - Joe Grey Jr., 81, of Brazil died at 12:50 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, in his residence, due to complications from mucosal melanoma cancer. He worked as manager for Dix Lumber for 25 years. He was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Brazil to Joseph Grey Sr. and Anna Nicholson Grey. Survivors include his wife, Joy Raines Grey, whom he married Dec. 16, 1943; his daughter-in-law, Janet Grey of Brazil; a grandson, Clint Grey of Brazil; a granddaughter, Alissa Grey of Indianapolis; one brother, Don Grey and his wife Phyllis of Brazil; two sisters, Betty Harris of Brazil and Shirley Boyce and her husband Don of Greenfield; nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Michael Grey, on Oct. 19, 2000; three half brothers, Floyd Grey, Lester Grey and Herbert Grey; and a half sister, Elizabeth Wagle. He also worked at Associated Door and Plywood for 10 years, S.H. Pawley Lumber in Center Point and Brazil, and following his retirement in 1986, he worked with his son, Mike, with Grey Custom Woodworking, in home-building and cabinetry. He graduated from Brazil High School in 1941, and attended Indiana State University. He served in the First Air Force during World War II, was a gunnery instructor in Westover Field, Mass., serving for three years and achieving the rank of sergeant. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in French Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tony Alstott officiating. Burial is in Clearview cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Caring Ministry at First United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Aline M. McGlone

BRAZIL - Aline M. McGlone, 77, of Brazil died at 8:10 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2004, in Holly Hill Health Care, where she had been a resident patient since 1999. She had been employed for many years at the former Quaker Maid, a food processing plant in Terre Haute. She was born June 2, 1926, in Vigo County to Arthur and Jenny Krockenberger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale McGlone in 1988. Survivors include one son, Dennis D. McGlone and his wife Janet of Terre Haute; and several cousins. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, an infant brother, and a grandson in childhood. In later life, she resided in Clay County and had done volunteer work at Holly Hill before becoming weakened by illness and entering the facility. She graduated from Garfield High School in Terre Haute, attended Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terre Haute and Senior Citizens' Center in Brazil. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Miller Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Philip G. Myers officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Wednesday.

Robert E. Watts

CLINTON - Robert E. Watts, 68, of Clinton died at 6:06 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was born Feb. 1, 1936, in Montezuma to George Washington Watts and Helen Patterson Watts. Survivors include his wife, Loretta Mullins Watts; one son, Paul A. Watts; two daughters, Darla Willming and Sherry Gosset; one sister, Charlotte Purcell; one brother, Donald Watts; and eight grandchildren. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Brown Funeral Home in Montezuma, with the Revs. Kenny Bass and Larry Snyder officiating. Burial is in Thomas cemetery in Newport. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

William Ferrall Rippetoe Jr.

William Ferrall Rippetoe Jr., 71, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Terre Haute died Sunday, May 16, 2004, in his residence. He was a purchasing manager with Custom Tubing. He was born in Terre Haute and was a resident of Fort Wayne for 30 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia. Survivors include one daughter, Denise "DeDe" Reed of Aurora, Ill.; two sisters, Miriam Orelup of Danville, Ind., and Joyce Robinson of Santa Claus. He was an Air Force veteran. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with visitation immediately preceding mass. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery. Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., assisted with local arrangements.
