Woodrow O. Power Jr.

FARMERSBURG - Woodrow "Woodie" O. Power Jr., 65, of Farmersburg, died at 10:13 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was a bass guitar player with Gospel Friends, Turning Point and numerous other gospel groups. He also had a private recording studio, where he recorded gospel groups from Indiana and Illinois. He was a retired railroad engineer with Conrail, where he was employed for more than 15 years. He was born Nov. 12, 1938, to Woodrow Power and Veneda Giller Power of Farmersburg. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; two daughters, Sherri Blasley and her husband Richard of Poland, Ind., and Barbara Escott and her husband Michael, of Brazil; one son, Woodrow Power III of Farmersburg; five grandchildren; five step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday in Farmersburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Ransford officiating. Interment will follow in Westlawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. Monday until services in the church. Mattox-McHugh is in charge of arrangements.

Patricia Thomas

MECCA - Patricia "Pat" Thomas, 63, of Matthews and formerly of Mecca, died at 10:17 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2004, in her residence. She worked in housekeeping in Clinton County Hospital and previously delivered newspapers for the Indianapolis Star, the Terre Haute Tribune, the Journal Review and the Daily Clintonian. She was born Jan. 25, 1941, in Ladoga to Rutherford Davis and Mildred Day Davis. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lamo Eugene Eup, on Dec. 6, 1977, and her second husband, Bill R. Thomas, on Sept. 10, 2002. Survivors include her mother, Mildred Day Runyon of Crawfordsville; two sons, Lamo Eugene Eup Jr. of Matthews and Robert Martin Kiger Jr. of Waveland; two brothers, Jim Davis of New Market and Junior Davis of Waveland; one sister, Betty Edison of Arkansas; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by two sons, three brothers and one sister. She was a member of Mecca Wesleyan Methodist Church. She enjoyed sports and coached Pee Wee Basketball, Little League, Babe Ruth and Girls Softball in Mecca. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in Barnes Mortuary in Rockville, with the Rev. Don Perry officiating. Burial is in Hixon cemetery in Mecca. Visitation is Monday 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Paul Wesley Raley

CRAWFORDSVILLE - Paul Wesley Raley, 70, of Crawfordsville and formerly of Sullivan County, died Friday, June 11, 2004, in Crawfordsville. He was employed by Raybestos in Crawfordsville until his retirement in 1993. He was born June 16, 1933 in Sullivan County to Fred Raley and Nellie House Raley. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Riley Raley of Crawfordsville, whom he married on Oct. 10, 1959, in Lafayette; one son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Mary Raley of Crawfordsville; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lynn Bowls of Lexington, Ky., and Lora and Tom Paxton of Butler; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and one brother. He served in Korea in the U. S. Army from 1953 to 1955. He attended the Church of God in Crawfordsville. Services are 7 p.m. Monday in Hall Funeral Home in Kingman with Rev. Jimmy Burchell officiating. Visitation is 6 p.m. Monday until services in the funeral home.

Adele Beitans

Adele Beitans, 80, of Terre Haute, died at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in St. Vincent's Hospice in Indianapolis. She was a retired food processor with Fairmount Foods. She was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Asune, Latvia, to Mr. and Mrs. Janis Spila. Her husband, August Beitans, died Feb. 6, 1982. Survivors include her son, the Rev. John Beitans of Indianapolis. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Latvian Catholic Association of Indiana. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Russell Zint officiating and the Rev. John Beitans co-officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with prayer service at 7 p.m.

Mary-Margaret Byerman Bowles

Mary-Margaret Byerman Bowles, 54, of Terre Haute died June 8, 2004, in Kilmarnock, Va., after a brief illness. She was the director of student services in the Women's External Degree program at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. She was born Feb. 21, 1950, in Richmond, Va., to Milton R. Bowles and Margaret Bowles. Survivors include her mother; two sisters, Betsy Bowles Brown and husband, Todd, and Lynne Bowles; brother-in-law, Dr. Curtis H. Smith; niece and nephews, Madison, Marshall and Miles Smith, all of Kilmarnock; good friend and former husband, Dr. Keith Byerman of Terre Haute and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Marilyn Bowles Smith. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in English and American studies in 1972 at Anderson College, a master's degree in American studies in 1974 at Purdue University and a master's degree in library and information science in 1995 at Indiana University. For more than 10 years, she was editor of Bridges, a newsletter for Women's External Degree students and served as junior class advisor, coordinating Ring Day. She was an adjunct instructor, teaching English composition, literature and women's history courses. In 1996, she was awarded the Sister Mary Joseph Pomeroy Faculty Excellence Award. She also was active in college staff organizations. She was an English instructor at ISU, a graduate teaching instructor at Purdue University and worked in the dean's office of natural science at the University of Texas in Austin. She also served as project archivist for the Martin Photograph Collection, a 50-year pictorial history of ISU and undertook study of the Young Women's Club in Terre Haute. She loved gardening, travel and sharing time with friends. She said her accomplishments were a "reflection of the range of opportunities made possible by a liberal arts education." A memorial service is Saturday in Kilmarnock. A memorial service will be at St. Mary-of-the-Woods later. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and the Diabetes Foundation. At the family's request, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College has established the Mary-Margaret Bowles Ring Fund to which friends may contribute.

Rev. James P. Dooley

The Rev. Dr. James P. Dooley, 82, of Indianapolis and formerly of Terre Haute, died Thursday, June 3, 2004. He had been a teacher at Schulte High School, Shawe High School in Madison, and the Latin School in Indianapolis. He also had served at Sacred Heart Parish, St. Anthony's in Madison, and St. Mary's in Rushville. He had been employed as a psychologist in the drug addictions unit of Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis for 20 years. He was born November 17, 1922. He is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine Gibson Dooley; his brother, the Rev. Paul Dooley; and his sister, Alice Dooley. Dooley was preceded in death by his brothers, the Revs. Francis Dooley and Joseph Dooley. Dooley was a graduate of Cathedral grade school and St. Meinrad School of Theology. He was ordained a priest in 1947. He received a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Ottawa. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated noon Saturday by the Revs. Paul Dooley and Adolph Dwenger with the people of St. Bridget's Church in St. Phillip's Episcopal Church, 720 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in Indianapolis. Visitation is 10 a.m. in the church until services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Martin University in care of Father Boniface Hardin at 2171 Avondale Pl., Indianapolis, IN 46218.

Virginia Riggs Hindman

Virginia Riggs Hindman, 64, of Middleville, Mich., and formerly of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Middleville. She was born Nov. 14, 1939 in Hart, Mich., to John Francis Riggs and Florence Riggs. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Raymond and Brenda Hindman of Hart, Phillip and Judy Hindman of Grand Rapids, Mich., Stacey and Dan Jones of Maine, Douglas and Missy Hindman of Hart, Cathy and Scott Westmaas of Middleville, Mich., Mary and Phillip Brouwers of Grand Rapids, Terry and Julie Hindman of Arizona, and Carrie Hindman of Arizona; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Gerald Riggs and his wife Evelyn, William Riggs and his wife Cindy, David Riggs and his wife Linda, LaVon Lamphere and her husband Richard, LaVerle Youngstrom and Nancy Beggs. Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday in Harris Funeral Home, 267 N. Michigan Ave., Shelby, Mich. Graveside services will immediately follow visitation on Friday in Ferry Township cemetery near Shelby. Directions to the funeral home are available by calling 1-888-216-9744.

Carrie Lucille Sappingfield

Carrie Lucille Sappingfield, 86, died at 10:50 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, in Royal Oaks Nursing Home. She was born in Vigo County on Jan. 28, 1918 to Thomas Arthur Reagin and Carrie Shackleton Reagin. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Riley Sappingfield in 1974. She is survived by two sons, William and his wife Martha Sappingfield, and Thomas and his wife Pamella Sappingfield; one daughter, Linda and her husband Frank Chesher; four brothers, Charles Reagin, Gerald Reagin, Jim Reagin and Harold Reagin; five sisters, Thelma Dean, Anna May York, Evelyn Mason, Sue Reagin and Mary Reagin; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, John Reagin, Arthur Reagin, Kenneth Reagin and David Reagin; and one sister, Almira Stallman. She had served in the Women's Air Corps during World War II. She was a member of American Legion Riley Post 328, the Eagles Auxiliary and the Genealogy Society. Services are 10 a.m Friday in Debaun Funeral Home Idaho Chapel, with Pastor Dick McShanog officiating. Burial is in Oak Hill cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Donations can be made to Friendly Benwood Community Christian Youth Camp. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Sarah Shaheen Shahadey

Sarah Shaheen Shahadey, 87, of Terre Haute died at 6:02 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was born in Wajih Hahja, Lebanon, on Feb. 27, 1917, to Sam Shaheen and Freda Shaheen. She and her husband were the former owners of Jack & Jill Children's and Maternity Shop in downtown Terre Haute, where they worked with their family. Her husband of 55 years, Frank F. Shahadey, died May 18, 1996. Sarah's survivors include two brothers, Eli Shaheen and his wife, Afaf, and Gilbert and his wife, Jeannette; four nephews and one niece, Sam, Kevin, Scott, Gilbert and Sarah Shaheen, all of Louisville, Ky.; one brother-in-law, Mike and his wife, Beverly; three sisters-in-law, Helen Shahadey, Louise Shahadey, and Linda Shahadey, all of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews, Shirley Nasser and her husband, George T., Mary Helen Ellis and her husband, Kaleel, Rosemarie Tanoos, Richard Tanoos, Julie Kay Lake, Rosemary Kassis and her husband, George, Joan Nasser and her husband, Bob, Loretta Nasser and her husband, John, Michael Mareena, Mary Jo Tom and her husband, Michael, Marilyn Farver and her husband, Jack, Denise Issa and her husband, George, Farris Shahadey and his wife, Dawn, Frank E. Shahadey and his wife, Paula, Charles Shahadey Jr., Michael Shahadey and his wife, Missy, John David Shahadey and Lynn Shahadey; one godson, Kaleel M. Ellis III; as well as several other great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother-in-law, Charles F. Shahadey; five sisters-in-law, Corrine "Kreme" Mareena, Marie Shahadey, Eva Shahadey, Rose Farah and Nora Shahadey. Sarah also had many special caregivers during the last several years. Sarah was a lifelong member of the St. George Orthodox Church at 1900 S. Fourth St. In 1999, Sarah became the largest individual benefactor in the history of the church, which resulted in the construction of what is now known as the Frank F. and Sarah Shahadey Memorial Kitchen. Sarah was also a lifelong member of the St. George Ladies Society. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the church with the V. Rev. Fr. Alexander Atty of Louisville presiding, assisted by the Rev. Elias Corey and Sub-Deacon Charles Shahadey Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park followed by a meal of mercy hosted by the St. George Ladies Society in the St. George Social Center. Pallbearers are Sam Shaheen, Kevin Shaheen, Gilbert Shaheen, Michael Mareena, Farris Shahadey, John David Shahadey, Richard Tanoos and James K. Ellis. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in St. George Church, with the Trisagion prayers at 7 p.m. If friends so desire, the family suggests donations be made to the St. George Orthodox Church of Terre Haute which shall be designated to a fund used to preserve the memory of Sarah or to the St. Michael Orthodox Church in Louisville. Envelopes will be available in the church. Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Edgar W. Stewart

Edgar W. Stewart, 91, of Terre Haute, died of natural causes at 8:58 p.m. on June 4, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He had worked for Terre Haute Malleable for 35 years, and previously for Devanold Mine and Interstate Mines as a coal miner. He was born Jan. 14, 1913, in Terre Haute to Bennett Stewart and Stella Roberts Stewart. His wife, Mary Heights Stewart, died in May 1972. Survivors include one son, Ed L. Stewart and his special friend Angela Ross, both of Terre Haute; two sisters, Carrie McClelland of Indianapolis and Mary Russell of Terre Haute; one brother, David Stewart and wife Janice of Biteley, Mich.; one grandson, Romino E. Stewart; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Stella Redman, Cassie Batton and Marie Russell; three brothers, Emery Stewart, James Stewart and Benjamin Stewart; and a special friend, Zudie Ayers. He graduated from District School No. 8 in Burnette. He was a member of Lost Creek AME Methodist church. Services are 1 p.m. Friday in Dunn Family Mortuary with the Rev. Guy Lipkins officiating. Burial is in Stewart cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services.

Ernest E. Tidd

Ernest E. Tidd, 87, of West Terre Haute, died at 10:27 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was retired from the Sisters of Providence at St. Mary-of-the-Woods after 42 years of service, during which he served many years as the farm manager and later as the grounds superintendent. He was born May 2, 1917, in Vigo County to Roscoe Tidd and Minnie Rhoden Tidd. Survivors include his wife, Anna C. Steppe Tidd, whom he married Jan. 30, 1943; four daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Gary Roth, Julia and Gary Ellis, all of West Terre Haute, Mary Ann and Jerry Day of Crawfordsville, and Peggy and Mark Lubbehusen of Rosedale; four sons and daughters-in-law, John and Sandy Tidd of Crawfordsville, Jerry and Mary Tidd of Bloomington, Paul and Sheryl Tidd, and Robert and Donna Tidd, all of West Terre Haute; a sister and brother-in-law, Madelyn and Ed Stanfield of West Terre Haute; sixteen grandchildren, Terry Roth, Dennis Roth, Shannon Scott, Emily Saidian, Ryan Tidd, David Tidd, Cody Tidd, Ethan Tidd, Kyle Tidd, Sara Tidd, Joel Day, Lauren Day, Landon Ellis, Josie Ellis, Maggie Lubbehusen and Mason Lubbehusen; and five great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Roth, Lindsay Roth, Morgan Roth, Cameron Scott and Kendall Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister. He was a member of St. Leonard's Catholic Church in West Terre Haute and also attended St. Mary-of-the-Woods Catholic Church in St. Mary of the Woods Village. Prayers are 9:15 a.m. Saturday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home with a procession to the Church of the Immaculate Conception on the St. Mary of the Woods College campus for Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Russell Zint officiating. Burial is in Bethesda cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. led by the Rev. Zint. Pallbearers are Dennis Roth, Ryan Tidd, David Tidd, Joel Day, Kyle Tidd, Cody Tidd, Ethan Tidd and Landon Ellis. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions can be made to the Sacred Heart of Jesus School with envelopes available in the funeral home.

Laura Whitecotton

Laura Whitecotton, 88, of Terre Haute, died at 3:55 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, in Harborside Healthcare Center. She retired in 1978 from Pillsbury Co. She was born July 25, 1915 in Staunton to Frank Riggs and Bertha Mewhinney Riggs. Her husband of 60 years, Virgil Whitecotton, died May 3, 1994. Survivors include three sons, Virgil Duane Whitecotton and wife Kathy, of Terre Haute, Lawrence Whitecotton and wife Janet, of Galatia, Ill., and Richard Whitecotton and wife Vicki, of Greenwood; two daughters, Betty Long and husband Paul, and Norma French and husband Larry, all of Fort Wayne; one sister, Cynthia Hotsenpiller, of Terre Haute; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many friends. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Philip Riggs, John Riggs and Ernest Riggs. She was an honorary member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, and was past president of the International American Federation of Grain Millers local union at Pillsbury Co. She was an avid gardener. She was very talented, a wonderful homemaker and a good friend to all who knew her. Services are 10:30 a.m Saturday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Avenue, with the Rev. Charles Parr officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to services Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Building Fund, 9097 E. Sugar Grove Drive, Terre Haute, IN 47803.

Ruth Hinzy

CLINTON - Ruth Hinzy, 77, of Clinton, died at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2004, after a lengthy illness. She was born Nov. 11, 1926 in Clinton to Edward and Katherine Dirker. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Garold Hinzy and son Mark Hinzy of Clinton; one sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Sam Curry of Clinton; one brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Margaret Dirker of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Alice Dirker of Clinton and Betty Baird of Phoenix; and one brother, Francis Dirker of Clinton. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Clinton where she was sacristen for 15 years. She was the first registered dental assistant in the state of Indiana and was the dental assistant for the late Dr. L. O. Wheeler. Mass of Christian Burial is in Sacred Heart Church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Joseph Villa officiating. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Frist Funeral Home with Rosary at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley or to the church. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.
