Betty E. Lucas

KNIGHTSVILLE - Betty E. Lucas, 75, of Knightsville, died June 9, 2004, at 5:38 a.m. in Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility. She was born Oct. 3, 1928 in Grafton, W.Va. to R. Edward and Dessie Shaw Hays. Her husband, Kenneth J. Lucas, whom she married on Feb. 14, 1947, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Larry and Veronica Lucas of Knightsville, Mark Lucas of Evansville, Rebecca "Becky" Jackson and her husband Brandy of Brazil, and J. Michael and Carol of West Terre Haute; 10 grandchildren; Stephanie Browning and husband John, Lauren Lucas and her fiance Matt Latta, Craig Cook and wife Bridget, Shaun Cook and wife Jennifer, Cari Cook, Chip Cook and wife Lori, Braiden Butts and husband Travis, Jerod Lucas, Jeremy Lucas and Janelle Lucas; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ronnie Hays and his wife Maryellen of Wolcottville; and other extended family. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one grandson, Ryan Lucas. Her family moved to Indiana when she was a young girl. She graduated from Broadripple High School in Indianapolis, and moved to the Brazil area following her graduation, where she met her husband. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a faithful member of the First Church of the Nazarene who enjoyed singing in the church and being an avid prayer warrior. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in French Funeral Home in Brazil, with the Rev. George Hewitt officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview cemetery. Visitation is from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Mary-Margaret Byerman Bowles

Mary-Margaret Byerman Bowles, 54, of Terre Haute died June 8, 2004, in Kilmarnock, Va., after a brief illness. She was the director of student services in the Women's External Degree program at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. She was born Feb. 21, 1950, in Richmond, Va., to Milton R. Bowles and Margaret Bowles. Survivors include her mother; two sisters, Betsy Bowles Brown and husband, Todd, and Lynne Bowles; brother-in-law, Dr. Curtis H. Smith; niece and nephews, Madison, Marshall and Miles Smith, all of Kilmarnock; good friend and former husband, Dr. Keith Byerman of Terre Haute and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Marilyn Bowles Smith. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in English and American studies in 1972 at Anderson College, a master's degree in American studies in 1974 at Purdue University and a master's degree in library and information science in 1995 at Indiana State University. For more than 10 years, she was editor of Bridges, a newsletter for Women's External Degree students and served as junior class advisor, coordinating Ring Day. She was an adjunct instructor, teaching English composition, literature and women's history courses. In 1996, she was awarded the Sister Mary Joseph Pomeroy Faculty Excellence Award. She also was active in college staff organizations. She was an English instructor at ISU, a graduate teaching instructor at Purdue University and worked in the dean's office of natural science at the University of Texas in Austin. She also served as project archivist for the Martin Photograph Collection, a 50-year pictorial history of ISU and undertook study of the Young Women's Club in Terre Haute. She loved gardening, travel and sharing time with friends. She said her accomplishments were a "reflection of the range of opportunities made possible by a liberal arts education." A memorial service is Saturday in Kilmarnock. A memorial service will be at St. Mary-of-the-Woods later. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and the Diabetes Foundation. At the family's request, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College has established the Mary-Margaret Bowles Ring Fund to which friends may contribute.

Jeramy Lee Gilliam

Jeramy Lee Gilliam, 21, of Indianapolis, and formerly of Mooresville and Vigo County, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2004. Jeramy goes to join his mother, Cyndie Ferguson Owens and his stepfather, Donnie Owens. He leaves behind his loving family; father, Michael Gilliam of Terre Haute; daughter Devon Wagner of Iowa; brother Michael Gilliam II of Terre Haute; and sister, JoAnn Taylor of Edmonds, Wash. Family and friends will honor his memory at 5 p.m. Thursday in Jones Family Mortuary in Mooresville, with Rev. Charles Paxton officiating. Calling hours are 3 to 5 p.m. before services. Cremation has been arranged.

Amanda 'Lucille' Daugherty

Amanda "Lucille" Daugherty, 85, of Terre Haute, died Monday, June 7, 2004, in Meadows Manor East following a five-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born Sept. 10, 1918, in Jonesboro, Ill., to Thomas and Ava LeFever Weaver. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter F. Diekmann; and second husband Coy Daugherty. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Kitty Diekmann of Chesapeake, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Mike Stiegelbauer of Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Stacy Stiegelbauer of Terre Haute and Nicole Stiegelbauer of Louisville, Ky.; nieces Carole Jones and Sherry Catt, both of Oblong, Ill. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Edith "Pinkie" Deaver; and two stepsons, Kenny and Jim Diekmann. She was a lifetime member and past president of the Eagles Auxiliary 291, and was past president of Daytime Grandmother's Club 488. Lucille volunteered at Gibault Inc. from 1990 to 1999 with their Christmas mailings. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Thomas Funeral Home, with Brother Mark Grayless officiating. Burial is in Woodlawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Gibault, Inc. P.O. Box 2316, Terre Haute, IN 47802.

Dorothy I. Franklin

Dorothy I. Franklin, 93, of Terre Haute, died at 10:50 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare Facility. She was retired from St. Anthony Hospital as a cook. She was born March 30, 1911, in Vigo County to Otto Francis Larkins and Amanda Hyde Larkins. Her husband, Donald Franklin, preceded her in death in 1969. Survivors include one sister-in-law, Mary Frances, of Beech Grove; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by a son, Leonard Franklin, in 1985; three brothers, Charles Larkins, Elmo Larkins and Norvin Larkins; one sister, Pauline Stevens; and her parents. She was a member of Gospel Tabernacle Church and previously attended New Life Tabernacle Church. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Gospel Tabernacle Church, with Brother Terry Manuel officiating. Burial is in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today in the church. DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Avice Knipmeyer Conrad McKibben McCrae

Avice Knipmeyer Conrad McKibben McCrae, 100, of Terre Haute, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, in Westminster Village. She was born Sept. 3, 1903, in Higginsville, Mo., to Frank H. Knipmeyer and Mary Downing Knipmeyer. She came to Terre Haute in 1920 where she graduated from Garfield High School in 1921 and Indiana State Normal School in 1924. She taught in the Terre Haute school system, was a soloist at St. Stephens Episcopal Church and was a cantor at Temple Israel for 14 years. She was a member of St. Stephens Church, a regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the country club of Terre Haute, a life member of the Young Women's Christian Association, The Women's Department Club, Union Hospital Service League, and the Vigo County Historical Society, where she served on the board of directors. She also served on the board of directors of the Chauncey Rose Orphans Home and was the vice-president of the Rose Fairbanks board. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry W. Conrad, Joseph P. McKibben and Thomas S. McCrae; and her son, Lt. Alfred H. Conrad. She is survived by a sister, Lura Lenge, of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, Samuel G. Knipmeyer of Ellendale, Tenn.; son, Henry W. Conrad of Terre Haute; daughter, Dr. Marie McCrae of Durham, N.H.; a daughter-in-law, Mary Farmer Conrad of Terre Haute; and four grandchildren, Alfred W. Conrad of Santa Monica, Calif., Mary Downing Sanchez of Hendaye, France, Scarlett McCrae of Portsmouth, N.H., Laura H. McCrae of Dover, N.H.; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and stepchildren too numerous to mention. A memorial service is 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Stephens Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Joseph H. Chillington officiating. Private burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements. Eva M. Harkness

Eva M. Harkness, 63, of Terre Haute died at 3:42 a.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born Feb. 3, 1941, in West Terre Haute to Leo R. LeClercq and Louise Hedden LeClercq. Survivors include her husband, Robert Harkness, whom she married April 29, 1960, in Terre Haute; her mother, Louise Topolski of Terre Haute; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Bob Cleeton of Terre Haute; two sons, William Harkness and his wife Jennifer, and Robby Harkness, all of Terre Haute; an adopted daughter, Loretta Osborn; two sisters, Mary Lou Evans of Terre Haute and Judy Erfft of Center Point; four brothers, Leo "Duck" LeClercq, Floyd LeClercq and Danny LeClercq, all of Terre Haute, and David LeClercq of Florida; seven grandchildren, DeLana Harkness, Adam Harkness, Katie Harkness, Ryan Harkness, Brittany Cleeton, Olivia Cleeton and Tyler Cleeton; and two step grandchildren, Jessica Lee and Mark Lee. She was preceded in death by her father. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, American Legion Post 104 Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 Ladies Auxiliary, the Voiture 21 40 & 8 LaFemme, Eagles Lodge Auxiliary and past state president of the Firefighters Auxiliary. Services are 1 p.m. today in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home with Sister Connie Kramer officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until services today. Pallbearers are Jay Hamblen, David Hamblen, Scott Hamblen, David "Boogie" Mount, Rick Horsley and Bill Felker. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Voiture 40 & 8 Nurses Training Program.

Carrie Lucille Sappingfield

Carrie Lucille Sappingfield, 86, died at 10:50 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, in Royal Oaks Nursing Home. She was born in Vigo County on Jan. 28, 1918, to Thomas Arthur Reagin and Carrie Shackleton Reagin. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Riley Sappingfield, in 1974. She is survived by two sons, William and his wife, Martha Sappingfield, and Thomas and his wife, Pamella Sappingfield; one daughter, Linda and her husband, Frank Chesher; four brothers, Charles Reagin, Gerald Reagin, Jim Reagin and Harold Reagin; five sisters, Thelma Dean, Anna May York, Evelyn Mason, Sue Reagin and Mary Reagin; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 10 a.m. Friday in DeBaun Funeral Home Idaho Chapel, with Pastor Dick McShanog officiating. Burial is in Oak Hill cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Jack Patercsak

Jack Patercsak, 68, of Terre Haute died at 3:25 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2004, in his residence. He retired from Bemis Co. Inc. He was born June 24, 1935, in Vigo County to Michael Joseph Patercsak and Charlotte Bernadine Ross Patercsak. Survivors include his wife, Darlene Roloff Patercsak, whom he married Aug. 9, 1958; two daughters, Lori Bauer and her husband Gary, and Lecia Bumpus and her husband James, all of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Robert Bauer and his fiancee Lindsay Robbins, Ryan Bauer, Jaclyn Bumpus, Lauren Bumpus and Emalie Bumpus; great-grandson, Gavin Bauer; one sister, Kay Stevenson and her husband Bob of Terre Haute; a half-sister, Lynn Carpenter of Terre Haute; a stepbrother, Henry and his wife, Helen Carpenter, of Terre Haute; a stepsister, Charlene Wilson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Thomas Henry Carpenter; a son, Jack Patercsak II; a half brother, Gary Carpenter; and a stepbrother, Fred Carpenter. He was an Army veteran. Prayer service is 10:45 a.m. Wednesday in Karanovich-Giovanini Funeral Home in Clinton. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church, Clinton, with the Rev. Joseph Villa officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Foundation, in care of Karanovich-Giovanini Funeral Home; or to Sacred Heart Church in Clinton.

Sarah Shaheen Shahadey

Sarah Shaheen Shahadey, 87, of Terre Haute died at 6:02 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was born in Wajih Hahja, Lebanon, on Feb. 27, 1917, to Sam Shaheen and Freda Shaheen. She and her husband were the former owners of Jack & Jill Children's and Maternity Shop in downtown Terre Haute, where they worked with their family. Her husband of 55 years, Frank F. Shahadey, died May 18, 1996. Sarah's survivors include two brothers, Eli Shaheen and his wife, Afaf, and Gilbert and his wife, Jeannette; four nephews and one niece, Sam, Kevin, Scott, Gilbert and Sarah Shaheen, all of Louisville, Ky.; one brother-in-law, Mike and his wife, Beverly; three sisters-in-law, Helen Shahadey, Louise Shahadey, and Linda Shahadey, all of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews, Shirley Nasser and her husband, George T., Mary Helen Ellis and her husband, Kaleel, Rosemarie Tanoos, Richard Tanoos, Julie Kay Lake, Rosemary Kassis and her husband, George, Joan Nasser and her husband, Bob, Loretta Nasser and her husband, Father John, Michael Mareena, Mary Jo Tom and her husband, Michael, Marilyn Farver and her husband, Jack, Denise Issa and her husband, George, Farris Shahadey and his wife, Dawn, Frank E. Shahadey and his wife, Paula, Charles Shahadey Jr., Michael Shahadey and his wife, Missy, John David Shahadey and Lynn Shahadey; one godson, Kaleel M. Ellis III; as well as several other great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother-in-law, Charles F. Shahadey; five sisters-in-law, Corrine "Kreme" Mareena, Marie Shahadey, Eva Shahadey, Rose Farah and Nora Shahadey. Sarah also had many special caregivers during the last several years. Sarah was a lifelong member of the St. George Orthodox Church at 1900 S. Fourth St. In 1999, Sarah became the largest individual benefactor in the history of the church, which resulted in the construction of what is now known as the Frank F. and Sarah Shahadey Memorial Kitchen. Sarah was also a lifelong member of the St. George Ladies Society. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the church with the Rev. Alexander Atty of Louisville presiding, assisted by the Rev. Elias Corey and Sub-Deacon Charles Shahadey Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park followed by a meal of mercy hosted by the St. George Ladies Society in the St. George Social Center. Pallbearers are Sam Shaheen, Kevin Shaheen, Gilbert Shaheen, Michael Mareena, Farris Shahadey, John David Shahadey, Richard Tanoos and James K. Ellis. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in St. George Church, with the Trisagion prayers at 7 p.m. If friends so desire, the family suggests donations be made to the St. George Orthodox Church of Terre Haute which shall be designated to a fund used to preserve the memory of Sarah or to the St. Michael Orthodox Church in Louisville. Envelopes will be available in the church. Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Clayton E. Terry

Clayton E. Terry, 87, of Terre Haute died June 7, 2004, in Davis Gardens in Westminster Village. For 26 years he was employed as a house-to-house salesman for Omar Bakeries followed by nine years driving wholesale routes for West & Tastee Bakeries. He then retired and gained a reputation as a "fix-it" man for small appliances and household repairs. He was born July 2, 1916, in Crawfordsville to Thomas Vora Terry and Cora Busenbark Terry. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ethel Manges Terry, in September 1997. Survivors include one son, Pastor Walter Terry and his wife Bonnie of Scott County; one daughter, Eileen Thurman and her husband Gary of Kansas, Okla.; two grandchildren, Sarah Pugh of Stratton, Neb., and Richard Thurman of Joplin, Mo.; and one great-granddaughter, Amy Pugh of Stratton. He also was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Florence Newton, and two brothers, Thomas and Leslie Terry. He was a resident of Westminster Village for 17 years. He was a member of Oregon Baptist Church and belonged to Toastmasters. Visitation is 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday in Oregon Baptist Church, with a memorial service at 11. Inurnment is 1:30 p.m. Friday in Oak Hill cemetery in Crawfordsville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideon International or the building fund for Oregon Baptist Church.

Donald S. Yeisley

Donald S. Yeisley, 62, of Terre Haute, died at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 7, 2004, in his residence. He was born Dec. 13, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa. Survivors include his wife, Penny Harwing Yeisley; one daughter, Becky Yeisley of California; one son, Brian Yeisley of Indianapolis; one sister, Kathy Reoder of California; and one grandson, Rorrie Yeisley. There are no services or visitation. Callahan Funeral Home at 2425 Wabash Ave. assisted with arrangements.

Samuel A. Lloyd

FARMERSBURG - Samuel A. Lloyd, 83, of Farmersburg, died at 8:08 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in Sullivan Health and Living Center. He was formerly employed at Taylor Mail Service in Terre Haute. He was born in Shelburn on March 26, 1921, to Elmer Lloyd and Eva Wolfe Lloyd. He is survived by his wife, Eva Mae Walters Lloyd of Farmersburg; one daughter, Deanna Sue Roseman of Indianapolis; two stepsons, Thomas Vester and wife, Teresa, of Muncie, and Richard Vester and wife Deea of North Webster; one brother, Max Lloyd and wife Mary of Silver Spring, Fla., a sister-in-law, Pansy Parr of Sullivan; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard Lloyd and Chester Lloyd, and a sister, Bernice Havel. He was a World War II Veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, a member of Farmersburg Church of Christ, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger with Brother Mitch Hoesman officiating. Burial is in Woodward cemetery south of Dugger, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 972. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and before services Friday in the funeral home.

Mary F. Adamson

Mary F. Adamson, 87, of Franklin and formerly of Terre Haute, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, in St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove. She was head nurse of a neurological surgery unit in Pittsburgh, as well as a public health nurse in Mississippi and a private duty nurse before retiring in the early 1970s. She was born June 21, 1916, in Terre Haute to Harry V. Hamilton and Mae Newlin Hamilton Neese. She married James H. Adamson, and he preceded her in death in 1973. Survivors include daughter, Barbara L. "Bobbi" Vanderbilt; son, Harold W. "Woody" Adamson; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. She was a graduate of Union Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of Centenary Methodist Church, Law Wives, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Nightingales Nursing Association. She was a Cub Scout leader for four years, active with Boy Scouts of America and a volunteer for the Wabash Valley Council. No services are planned. Memorial contributions may be made to VistaCare Hospice. Arrangements are being handled by GH Herrmann Funeral Home in Greenwood.
