Shankerlal Karsandas Patel

Shankerlal Karsandas Patel, 90, of Terre Haute died at 10:35 a.m. Sunday, June 20, 2004, in Royal Oaks Health Care & Rehabilitation Center. He was born Jan. 1, 1914, in Unjha, India, to Karsandas Patel and Shivkorben Patel. He was the second child in a family of six children. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Parsanben. Survivors include four sons, Kantibhal and wife Vasanti of Sunnyvale, Calif., Manubhai and wife Tara of Bridgewater, N.J., Shashikant and wife Mradula of Terre Haute, and Hashmukh and wife Kamini of Audubon, Pa.; two daughters, Kamuben and husband Ishwarlal of Nairobi, Kenya, and Bhanuben and husband Ishwarlal of East Brunswick, N.J.; 10 grandchildren, Malinee, Atul, Mahesh, Kalindi, Meha, Ameet, Neesha, Neil, Ajay and Shilpa; and five great-grandchildren, Rajesh, Hema, Shay, Rohan and Sarina. He also was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters. He was a member of the Lions Club, was a businessman in Kenya and served on the County council in Kenya. At age 14, with only a sixth grade education, he left India to go to Kenya, East Africa. In Nairobi, capital of Kenya, he apprenticed in a grocery store. He worked very hard, usually 16 hours a day in return for minimal pay, room and board. He was a quick learner and good saver, which enabled him to start his own business. Hard work and good work ethics helped him become a very successful businessman quickly. He called his three brothers from India and they joined him in the business. He opened a bigger grocery store called Patel Provision Store in a small town called Thika, where he raised his family of four sons and two daughters. He was active politically and belonged to several civic organizations. In 1970, he retired at the age of 56 and moved to Ahmedabad, India, where he lived with his wife until her death in 1984. He then moved to the United States. Services will be noon today in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with Dr. Dilip Vedalankar officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services today. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 9135 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46226.

George Mason

SULLIVAN - George Mason, 77, of Sullivan died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at 7:20 p.m. in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was born July 1, 1926, in New Lebanon to George and Erma Pierson Mason. Survivors include his wife, Norma Knotts Mason; three daughters, Pamela Mason Daugherty and husband Jesse of Danville, Ind., Carla Mason Minglin of Terre Haute, and Linda Mason Ham and husband John of Sullivan; three sisters, Mary Mason, Rhoda Shryrock and Kathleen Scott, all of Sullivan; six grandchildren, Daniel Minglin, Angela Minglin Balitewicz, Jeffrey Ham, Kent Ham, Anne Stevens and Springer Daugherty; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Herbert Mason; and five sisters, Esther Gilbert, Alice Wilkins, Erma Roberts, Margaret Arnett and Helen Shorter. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sullivan. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Banks & Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan with the Rev. Mark Miller officiating. Burial is in Mt. Zion cemetery. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

John T. Jennings

John T. Jennings, 64, of Terre Haute, died Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in his residence. He was a construction worker through Laborers International Union of North America Local 204. He was born Oct. 26, 1939, in Houston, Miss., to James H. Jennings and Vennie Winters Jennings. His wife of 39 years, Dorothy Jenkins Jennings, whom he married on Dec. 5, 1964, survives him. Other survivors include four sons, Michael Love of Milwaukee, Antonio Walker, also of Milwaukee, Victor Traylor of Jackson, Tenn., and Cary Harps of Terre Haute; three daughters, Sheila Jennings of Terre Haute, Delnita Harps of Milwaukee and Cynthia Davis of Jackson; seven sisters, Ola Merriweather of St. Louis, Ruthie Chapman of Gun Town, Miss., Shirley White of Milwaukee, Mary Nelson of Jackson, Juanita Whitehead of St. Louis, Doris White of Milwaukee and Pearl Easter of Kansas City, Kan.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; two aunts; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Williams; and a brother, Henry Jennings. He was a U.S Army veteran. He was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, a lifetime member of Naptown Riders and a member of Laborers Union Local 204. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in Dunn Family Mortuary. Additional visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in Stephenson-Shaw Funeral Home, 807 N. Hays St., Jackson, Tenn. Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Baptist Church cemetery in Jackson, with the Rev. Marcus Reaves officiating.

Lawrence L. Liberty

Lawrence L. Liberty, 59, of Terre Haute, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in his residence. He was employed at Bemis Co. He was born Dec. 9, 1944, in Superior, Wis. to Albert Liberty and Margaret Gordon Liberty. His wife, Rhonda Liberty, preceded him in death on Nov. 22, 2003. Survivors include a son, Lawrence "Bo" Liberty Jr.; three daughters, Rebecca Walker, Cindy Lynch and Melissa Liberty; a sister, Jo Ann Liberty; three brothers, Bill, Danny and Albert Liberty; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with Curtis Mitchell officiating. The family extends a special thanks to Vista Care of Terre Haute.

Wilma Caryl Rodgers

Wilma Caryl Rodgers, 100, of Terrre Haute, died at 4:55 p.m. Tuesday June 22, 2004, in Davis Gardens Health Center. She was born Feb. 6, 1904, in Owen County to William Carl Rodgers and Mary Cisela Stuart Rodgers. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and eight sisters. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home in West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Allen Relford officiating. Burial is in Bethesda cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Saturday.

Richard A. Van Allen

Richard A. Van Allen, 86, formerly of Terre Haute, died at 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in his in Parke County residence. He was the retired general manager for the Terre Haute House. He was born Dec. 19, 1917, in Mt. Vernon, Ill., to Jefferson Van Allen and Mabel Graff Van Allen. Survivors include his wife, A. Jane Trimble Van Allen, whom he married on Nov. 28, 1947; four daughters, Abbie Lou Hilderbrand and husband John, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Kristie Lee and Rex Hampton Jr., Susan Jane Eisman and Zahni Dee Frey; five grandchildren, Katheryn Luster, Douglas Luster, Rebecca Yarrows, Amy Pence and Daniel Eisman; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a half brother, Frederick Van Allen; and a son-in-law, Steven Frey. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He had attended Honey Creek High School and graduated from Wiley High School. He was a 1952 graduate of Michigan State University School of Hotel and Institutional Management, where he was their class president. He was a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 86, and a former member and past president of the Terre Haute Lions Club. His current memberships included the Strawberry Hill Cannoneers, German Oberlandler Club, Michigan State University Alumni Association, Krietenstein American Legion Post 104, Lawton Byrum Veterans of Foreign Wars 972, member and past commander of Leon VonShleppler Disabled American Veterans Chapter 9, a member of the National Order of Trench Rats and belonged to the Rocky Fork Lake Association. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday in Debaun Funeral Home Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Spear officiating. Krietenstein American Legion Post 104 will conduct military rites at the beginning of services on Saturday. Cremation will follow. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. on Saturday in the funeral home. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Leon VonShleppler D.A.V. Chapter 9. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Mildred Katheryn Myers Woods

Mildred Katheryn Myers Woods, 84, of Terre Haute, died Monday, June 21, 2004 in Clay County Health Care Center in Brazil. She was a homemaker. She was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Sullivan County to Arthur Poole and Iva McCammon Poole. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gus Myers, and her second husband, Joseph Arthur Woods. She is survived by a son, Thomas Myers, of Peoria, Ill.; a stepson, Bob Myers of Terre Haute; a daughter, Pam Newport of Terre Haute; two granddaughters, Angela Harringer and Courtney Newport; one great-grandchild, Joshua Myers; a brother, Bob Poole of Fullerton, Calif.; three sisters, Margaret Spice of Terre Haute, Betty Woods of Fullerton, and Pauline Hopkins of Spencer. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Thomas Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Myers officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 10 a.m. Saturday until services in the funeral home.

Carl M. Wright

Carl M. Wright, 79, of Terre Haute, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in his home. Carl retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier and was a 50-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Jasonville to Oather and Jessie Peterson Wright. He is survived by his wife, Doris Lupold Wright, whom he married Aug. 20, 1964; four daughters, Carla Anderson and Deborah Tschernia, both of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Denise Calderwood of Bakersfield, Calif., and Pamela Shoemaker of Winter Garden, Fla.; three sons, Paul Wright of Plantation, Fla., David Wright of Casselberry, Fla., and Philip Wright and his wife Mary of Covington, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glen Wright of Jasonville and Paul Wright of Fillmore; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Weldon Wright. Carl was a veteran of World War II serving with the Marine Corps Dive Bombers Group in the South Pacific. He was a member of Berean Baptist Church and taught Junior and Senior High Sunday School classes for 30 years. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Roselawn Funeral Home with burial in Highland Lawn cemetery. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 will conduct graveside military rites. Visitation is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests friends make memorial contributions to the Berean Baptist Church building fund.

Judith L. Bozarth Carli Amerman

Judith L. Bozarth Carli Amerman, 64, of Terre Haute, died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in Terre Haute. She was a secretary at Union Hospital. She was born April 15, 1940, in Terre Haute to Merrett C. "Pete" Bozarth and Zelma May Morris Bozarth. Survivors include two sons, Kevin Carli and his wife Pam of Cayuga, and Bradley Carli and his wife Vicie of Arlington, Texas; two daughters, Barbara Carli of Clinton and Melissa Abriani and her husband Bob, also of Clinton; one stepdaughter, Darlene Savant of Terre Haute; one stepson, Ronald Amerman of Marshall, Ill.; one sister, Jane Lawson and her husband Bill of Shirkieville; five grandchildren, Holly McQueary and her husband Jim, Quinn Carli, Ross Carli, Lauren and Sam Abriani, Carly Ward and Penny Dickerson; several step and great-grandchildren; care giver, William Amerman of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, John Michael. She was a member of Purdue Extension Vigo County Chorus Club. Prayer services are 10:45 a.m. Friday in Karanovich-Giovanini Funeral Home, with the Rev. Joseph Villa officiating, followed by Mass of Christian Burial is in Sacred Heart Church in Clinton. Cremation is scheduled. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Ilene Easter McCollister

BRAZIL - Ilene Easter McCollister, 88, of Brazil, died at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in Cloverleaf Healthcare in Knightsville. She was the daughter of the late Clifford and Rose Dowden Easter. Born Aug. 8, 1915, in Terre Haute, she lived in Saline City as a child. She married Everett "Flick" McCollister in 1934, and worked with him in their business endeavors. They operated the Silver Star Restaurant from 1945 to 1947, then established Flick's Ice Cream Store and was in business there until 1969. Upon retirement, they moved to a farm in Reelsville and raised cattle. After the death of her husband in 1971, she moved to Colony Acres in Brazil and has resided there since. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Marylou and Don Miller of Brazil; her son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Diane McCollister of Coshocton, Ohio; five grandchildren, Don Miller Jr. of Palm City, Fla., Paula Williams and husband Ken of Defiance, Mo., Jim Miller and wife Julie of Stuart, Fla., Troy McCollister and wife Paula of Zanesville, Ohio, and Brad McCollister of Coshocton; ten great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Rose Marie Thomas of Waveland; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Ione Branson and Dorothy Carroll. She attended Ashboro School in Saline City. She was a longtime member of the Nazarene Church and taught children's Sunday School for many years. She liked to crochet and made many items for gifts for family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister, and faithful to her God. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in French Funeral Home in Brazil, with the Rev. George Hewitt officiating. Burial will follow in Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Zelma C. Swaim

MARSHALL, Ind. - Zelma C. Swaim, 84, of Indianapolis, and formerly of Marshall, died at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2004, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was a homemaker and retired from Citizens State/First Parke State Bank in Marshall. She was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Lamont. Okla. to Ernest L. Clanton and Audrey L. Whitney Clanton. She married Robert O. Swaim on April 20, 1947, in Independence, Mo., and he preceded her in death on April 19, 1989. Survivors include four sons, David R. Swaim and his wife Carla Jo of Crawfordsville; Gary O. Swaim and his wife Julie of Camby, Kevin E. Swaim and his wife Debbie of Marshall, and Keith J. Swaim of Clinton; six grandchildren, Michael and Tom Swaim, Grayson and Callan Swaim, and Jeremy and Kristin Swaim; and two great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Northeast High School, Kansas City, Mo., and attended University of Kansas City Business School and Purdue University at Lafayette. She was a member of Marshall Federated Church, where she was past choir director of the Cherubs and Junior Choir, past president of Kappa, Kappa, Kappa, member Tri Kappa Associates, past matron of Marshall Chapter 438 Order of Eastern Star, 50-year member Hedges Chapter 51 OES, charter member Indiana Angus Association, member of Women in Banking, member of the Parke County Art Association, past president of the Busy Homemakers Home Economics Club, past president of the Marshall Women's Club, past president Parke County Historical Society and member of the Indiana and American Angus Auxiliary. Services are 10 a.m. Friday in Marshall Federated Church. Burial is in Bethany cemetery in Marshall. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the church. Rice Funeral Home in Marshall assisted with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Marshall Federated Church, P.O. Box 57, Marshall, IN 47859 or Parke County Historical Society, Rockville, IN 47872.

Adam Schaefer Carey

Adam Schaefer Carey, 23, of Terre Haute and formerly of Marshall, Ill., died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born May 1, 1981, in Terre Haute to Alan Carey and E. Christine Smitely Carey. Survivors include his parents, Alan and Mary Carey of Terre Haute; step grandmother, Dorothy Rohmann of Terre Haute; five sisters, Lanie Sparks, Libby Proehl and Whitney Shaw, all of Terre Haute, and Becki Proehl and Sarah Lichtenwalter, both of Crawfordsville; uncles and aunts, Jim and Diana Carey of Paris, Ill., and Don and Jan Smitley of Charleston, Ill.; several cousins; two nephews; and one niece. He was preceded in death by his mother. He was a 1999 graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School and a member of several bowling leagues. A Celebration of Life is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Sutton & Son Funeral Home in Paris with the Rev. Walter Huyck officiating. Burial is in Edgar cemetery in Paris. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until services Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Sugar Creek Baptist Church in West Terre Haute.

Charlotte Burdick

Charlotte Burdick, 97, of Terre Haute died at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Davis Gardens Health Center. She was born Nov. 1, 1906, to Lawson H. and Cora Dean (Bottorff) Stingley at Clarks Hill. She was a retired U.S. Post Office clerk who lived most of her life in Mulberry, and had lived at Westminster Village in Terre Haute for more than 20 years. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy J. McKee and her husband, Dale F. McKee, of Terre Haute; three grandchildren, Craig M. McKee and his wife, Diann E. McKee of Terre Haute, Elizabeth A. McKee of Carmel and Christopher J. McKee of Indianapolis. She was preceded in death by an infant son, James Henry Lehr; and three husbands, John E. Lehr, who died in 1951, Charles T. Kleinsmith, who died in 1975, and E. DeForest Burdick, who died in 1986. She was a member of United Methodist Temple and a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than 50 years. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home at 605 S. 25th St. Burial will follow at Fair Haven cemetery in Mulberry. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Friends may make memorial contributions to a charity of their choice.

Lois M. Huff Hemsley

Lois M. Huff Hemsley, 82, of Terre Haute died Saturday, July 24, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Sullivan County to Jasper A. Huff and Agnes A. Bradley Huff. Her husband, Earl Hemsley, died July 25, 1985. Survivors include a daughter, Diana Stanley and her husband James of Brazil; a granddaughter, Amy Russell and husband Eric of Terre Haute; a grandson, Scott Stanley and wife Shelley of Toledo, Ohio; and a great-granddaughter, Mikayla Stanley of Toledo. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jasper C. Huff. She was a member of Southside Church of Christ. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with Brother Les Downen officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the Light House Mission.
