Matthew James McCullough, 21, of Terre Haute died at 8:34 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was born April 11, 1983, in Terre Haute to Calvin Eli McCullough and Tina M. Hoopingarner McCullough. Survivors include his parents of Terre Haute; his grandfather, Glen W. Hoopingarner of West Terre Haute; uncles, Glen Hoopingarner and wife Barb of West Terre Haute, Jerry Hoopingarner and wife Etta of Terre Haute, John Hoopingarner and wife Meri Kay, Tim Hoopingarner and wife Bertha, all of West Terre Haute, George McCullough and wife Linda of Ingles, Alan McCullough and wife Karen of Renton, Wash., Earl McCullough and wife Peggy of Logansport, Don "Gene" McCullough of Lewis, Dewey McCullough and wife Debra of Peru, Bernard McCullough and wife Vickie of Fairbanks, Keith McCullough and wife Deanna of Ocala, Fla.; aunts, Belva Morris and husband Bill, Effie Evinger and husband Joe, and Sharon Scott, all of Terre Haute, Susie Denning and husband Ian of Tacoma, Wash.; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by one brother, Adam McCullough; grandparents, Robert McCullough and Marybell Ingerson; grandmother, Dorothy Hoopingarner; and a cousin Jason Allen Hoopingarner. He was a 2001 graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo High School, where he was involved in television graphics for sports and games under the supervision of Mike Dason; and attended Indiana State University. He was an avid sports fan, especially a Chicago Cubs fan. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of Indiana.

Leonard 'Cliff' Clinkenbeard

FARMERSBURG - Leonard "Cliff" Clinkenbeard, 80, of Farmersburg died at 5:38 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital's emergency room. He began his employment in the maintenance department at Ivy Tech in Terre Haute in 1968, and worked until his retirement in 1988. After retiring he continued to work at the Valley campus in a part-time capacity until his death. He was born July 19, 1924, in Knox County to Glenn Clinkenbeard and Ida Clinkenbeard. His wife, Betty Russell Clinkenbeard, died Feb. 8, 2001. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Joyce Clinkenbeard of Indianapolis, and Larry and Andrea Clinkenbeard of Terre Haute; one brother, Tom Clinkenbeard; three sisters, Laverne Helderman, Eva Moody and Kathryn Bogard; and three grandchildren, Elisa, Kristin and Matthew Clinkenbeard. He also was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, Glenn and Bob; and one sister, Mae. He was a longtime member of the Farmersburg and Curry Township volunteer fire departments. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel at 85 E. Springhill Drive, Terre Haute, with the Rev. Ray Anderson officiating. Burial is in Westlawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, with an Indiana Volunteer Fire Department memorial at 7 p.m.

Charlotte D. Gifford

Charlotte D. Gifford, 88, of Terre Haute died Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was a kindergarten teacher in Massachusetts and Maryland. She was born Jan. 29, 1916, in Lynn, Mass., to Alvah Dodge and Annie Anderson Dodge. Her husband, John, died in 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Susan and her husband John Conrad of Terre Haute, and Nancy Jean Gifford of Washington, D.C.; one grandson and his wife, J. Kenneth and Sandra Conrad of Terre Haute; five nieces; one nephew; and one sister-in-law. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She attended Lyford Bible Church in Lyford and was past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Lynn. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with the Rev. Scott Coombes officiating. Entombment is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is noon until services Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to The Carpenters Project, 2953 E. Colonial, Terre Haute, IN, 47805.

Mary Modestine Guy

Mary Modestine Guy, 85, of Terre Haute died at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Union Hospital from natural causes. She was a cosmetologist for more than 20 years in Terre Haute and was a former director of the former Rose Southside Day Care Center. She was born May 20, 1919, in Madisonville, Ky., to W.C. Sutton and Della Beason Sutton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Allen Guy, whom she married June 13, 1943, he died in November 1996. Survivors include two sons, Stan Guy of Bethlehem, Pa., and Edgar Guy of Terre Haute; one daughter, Gwendolyn Gordon and her husband Robert of Lawrenceville, Va.; one sister, Betty Haggerty of Terre Haute; one brother, Welburn Sutton Sr. of Terre Haute; and five grandchildren, Guy Gordon of Lawrenceville, Va., Gina Gordon of Richmond, Va., Gregory Guy of New York, Gloria Guy of Rosenburg, Texas, and Genesis Guy of the Dominican Republic. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Louis Sutton. She attended Indiana State University and was a graduate of Ohio School of Cosmetology. She was a foster grandparent at Terre Town and Fuqua elementary schools and was a former assistant director at McMillan Adult Day Care Center. She was a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church for more than 50 years and a member of the NAACP. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in the church, with the Rev. Cleytus Malone officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today in Dunn Family Mortuary, 2005 N. 13th St. There also will be visitation from 11 a.m. until services Monday in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 1099 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN 46204.

Larry W. McDonald

BRAZIL - Larry W. McDonald, 57, of Rockville, formerly of Brazil died Friday, July 23, 2004, in Lee Allan Bryant Nursing Home in Rockville. He was born June 20, 1947, in Brazil to Charles E. McDonald and Virginia E. Geilhart McDonald. Survivors include one daughter, Penny Nevins of Brazil; one brother, Bill McDonald and wife Joyce of Brazil; three granddaughters, Virginia Raab and Mary Raab, both of Brazil, and Bobbi Raab of Terre Haute; aunts and uncles, Wayne and Evelyn Parkins and Irene McDonald, all of Brazil, and Fred and Dorothy Geilhart of Arlington, Texas; a sister-in-law, Jackie McDonald; and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, James E. McDonald. He was a staff sergeant in the Army serving in Vietnam, where he received the Army Commendation medal with V device, Good Conduct medal bronze clasp with two loops, Vietnam Service medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal with device 1960, Combat Infantryman badge and was a Sharpshooter (M-16 rifle). He was a member of Christ Community Church, a life member of Brazil American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a member of Rockville American Vets, Brazil Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Lodge 541 Free & Accepted Masons. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Miller Memorial Chapel. Burial is in Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Brazil VFW or American Legion. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Edward Eugene 'Dunk' Wood

Edward Eugene 'Dunk' Wood, 74, of Newport News Va., and formerly of West Terre Haute, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Newport News from complications of Agent Orange. He was born on July 14, 1930, in West Terre Haute to Charles Edward Wood and Gertrude Walker Wood. He is survived by his wife Jean; daughter, Trisha Jackson; granddaughter, Dorian Jackson; three sisters, Cathy Lamb of West Terre Haute, Georgia Church of Universal and Beverly Winkler of Sanford; and several nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Betty Davis, Carolyn Milton, Juanita Buchanan and Mary Jenkins; and one brother, Henry "Bud" Wood. He retired from the U.S. Army after serving in Korea and Vietnam. He was a well-known musician in this area and in Virginia. He played with the Statler Brothers, Kitty Wells, Jimmy C. Newman and Johnny Russell. He was co-writer and performer for the country version of "Lookin' Good America" on CBS. A memorial service is noon Sunday in Sanford Wesleyan Church. Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

David Allen Augustus

David Allen Augustus, 42, of San Marcos, Calif., and formerly of Riley, died Monday, July 19, 2004, in his residence. He was employed for 14 years with North County Transit District as a diesel mechanic. He was born Dec. 9, 1961, in Terre Haute to Walter Edgar Augustus and Barbara Fox Augustus. Survivors include his mother, Barbara, of Clay City; one brother, Jim Augustus and wife Kathy of Terre Haute; five sisters, Nancy Pengra and husband Mark of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Carolyn Pettet and husband Ron of Terre Haute, Linda Catt and husband Ron of Coal City, Jane Schafer and husband Marion of Brazil, and Janet Orman and husband Ray of Shelburn; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful pets, Typpur and Kruezre. He was preceded in death by his father. He served nine years in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1980-1989. He was a graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School class of 1980. He enjoyed deep sea fishing and spending time with his dogs, Typpur and Kruezre. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City, with Brother Scott Wiley officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

David Scott Land

Lt. Col. David Scott Land, (U.S.A.F. ret.), beloved husband and father, died of heart failure early Tuesday morning in Union Hospital. David was born in Evansville to Martha and Edwin Julius Land on April 24, 1941, and is survived by his wife, Barbara Thompson Land; son, Ted Land of Houston; father, Edwin Julius Land of New Harmony; two brothers, Roger T. Land and his wife Katherine of Montrose, Ala.; and Daniel Land and his wife Judy of Olathe, Kan.; one sister, Catherine Land Rhodes and her husband Ralph of Athens, Ohio; four nephews and three nieces; one grand-nephew and one grand-niece. His wife Barbara, a resident of Terre Haute, is also a native of Evansville. After graduation from Evansville Bosse High and the University of Evansville, where he was in ROTC and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, David received his commission from the Air Force. He served five tours of duty in the southeast Asia, including Vietnam, in 1966-67, 1970, 1972 and 1973, as an intelligence officer and B-52 bombadier and was awarded the Bronze Star, Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1980, David joined the Indiana Air National guard at Hulman Field, where he flew as an F-4 Phantom WSO until his retirement in 1992. After the conclusion of a career of service dedicated to his country, David worked as a tax adviser for H & R Block. Throughout his lifetime, he enjoyed sailing and traveling, and more recently, his pets Max and Stanley. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street. Burial is in Arlington National cemetery at a later date. Visitation is 6 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home, and 10 a.m. to services on Saturday. The Land family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Heart Association, 6100 W. 96th St., Indianapolis, IN 46278 or the Terre Haute Humane Society, 1811 S. Fruitridge Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47803.

Mable E. Shidler Knight

CLAY CITY - Mable E. Shidler Knight, 96, of Long Beach, Calif., formerly of Clay City and Indianapolis, died at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in Atlantic Memorial Healthcare. She was born on June 29, 1908, in Clay City to William Shidler and Novella Swalley Shidler. From Clay City she moved to Indianapolis and lived there several years prior to moving to Long Beach in 1993. She married John R. Knight in 1928, and he preceded her in death in 1965. Survivors include three daughters, Norma Novella Emberton and Patricia Fitzpatrick, both of Long Beach, and Joan Minerva of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one sister, Virgina June Schneider of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Belden Shidler and Merle Shidler; and one sister, Lucille Trueblood. She was a member of United Brethren Church in Lewis. Services are 2 p.m. Monday in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with burial following in Maple Grove cemetery. Visitation is 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday prior to services in the funeral home.

Rosella Maxine Wade Lytle

JASONVILLE - Rosella Maxine Wade Lytle, 78, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004, in her residence. She worked at CBS for 11 years and was a certified nurse's aid with Home Health Care for approximately 20 years. She was born Dec. 30, 1925, in Davies County to George Washington Fields and Emma Elizabeth Daugherty Fields. Her first husband, Roland Kenneth Wade Sr. preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1978. Her second and former husband, Curtis Lytle, of Terre Haute, survives her. Other survivors include five daughters, Sherron Fields of Bedford, Charlotte Thomas of Jasonville, Greta Bennett of Terre Haute, Teresa Lynn Wade of Portland, Maine and Anita Williams of Jasonville; two sons, Roland Kenneth Wade Jr. of Peoria, Ill. and Perry Lee Wade of Jasonville; one stepdaughter, Sue Campbell of Marshall, Ill.; three stepsons, Tom Lytle and Jerry Lytle, both of Terre Haute, and David Lytle of Wichita, Kan.; a sister-in-law, Marguerite Fields of St. Ann, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Joyce Ann Wade; two sisters, Mary Sullivan and Josephine Fields; and one brother, Benjamin Fields. She was a member of Shakamak Community Church and Jasonville Order of Eastern Star. Services are 2 p.m. Sunday in McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home, with Pastor Chris McKinney officiating. Burial is in Peavey cemetery in Howesville. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to services on Sunday in the funeral home.

Larry Phillip McKenzie

STAUNTON - Larry Phillip McKenzie, 61, of Staunton died at 3:10 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born on April 16, 1943, in Clay County to Robert McKenzie and Selma Hyde McKenzie. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn McKenzie; a son, Larry Phillip McKenzie II and wife Vivian of Staunton; one stepson, Darryl Danforth of Mississippi; one daughter, Michelle Chandler and husband Gregg of Spencer; two stepdaughters, Becky Doyle of Brazil and Christy Harlan and husband Jeff of South Carolina; two brothers, Gerald McKenzie of Terre Haute and Robert McKenzie Jr. and wife Bethel of Aurora, Colo.; two sisters, Marcella Reagin of Staunton and Marilyn Harrison and husband Jack of Staunton; five grandchildren, Garrett and Wyatt McKenzie of Staunton, Robert McKenzie and Toby and Malishia Chandler of Spencer, and four step grandchildren, Cole and Justine Doyle of Brazil, Neil Harlan of South Carolina and Dustin Danforth of Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Orin Beddow and Leo McKenzie. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Miller Memorial Chapel in Brazil with the Rev. James Gibson officiating. Burial will follow in Bee Ridge cemetery in Brazil. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Wayne L. Modesitt

CORY - Wayne L. Modesitt, 67, of Cory, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, in St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis from complications from leukemia. He retired from Amax Coal/Kindell Coal Company, Minnehawhaw Mine, where he served in many capacities and last worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was born Aug. 23, 1936, in Cory to Ernest and Frances Hull Modesitt. On Jan. 28, 1956, he married Barbara Edwards Modesitt of Cory, and she survives him. He is also survived by his mother Frances, of Cory; two sons, Rick Modesitt and wife Kathy of Terre Haute and Phil Modesitt and wife Martha Ann of Lubbock, Texas; one daughter, "Tam" Ray and husband Doug of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren, Taryn Ray and Tiffany Ray, Louann Modesitt, J.R. Modesitt, Brooks Modesitt, Peyton Modesitt and Macrae Modesitt; one brother, Alvin Modesitt and wife Barbara of Cory; two sisters, Wanda Hilton of Riley and Elaine Collins and husband Ray of Terre Haute; and several nieces, nephews and extended family. He graduated from Cory High School, class of 1954. He was an active member of the Cory Zion United Methodist church, and enjoyed teaching Sunday school there. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 390 in Riley, Terre Haute Valley Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, the Zorah Shrine, and was past master of the 390 Lodge. He was a member of United Mine Workers and served as past president. He also was a lifelong farmer. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially in the Western states and in Alaska. He and his family enjoyed camping in their recreational vehicle. His hobbies also included working in the garden, woodworking and welding crafts. He also was the loving owner of "Lucky". Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony Ferriell officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery in Riley. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today with Masonic services at 7 p.m., and again Saturday prior to services in the funeral home.

Eileen L. Thomas

MONTEZUMA - Eileen L. Thomas, 83, of Montezuma, died at 4:01 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Centenary to Hoke Smith Spurgeon and Alma Houghton Spurgeon. Survivors include one son, Ron Thomas of Montezuma; one grandson, Mat Thomas and his wife Lori of Montezuma; one granddaughter, Ashlee Sherey and husband Jason of Terre Haute; two great-grandsons, Bryant West and Brogan Thomas of Montezuma; and one great-grandaughter, Brooklyn Thomas of Montezuma. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Dennis Thomas, who died in 1942. She was a graduate of Montezuma High School and a member of Montezuma Independent Baptist Church. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Brown Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Gladding officiating. Burial is in Oakland cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.
