Willie J. McConnell Jr.

Willie J. McConnell Jr., 75, of Terre Haute died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in Union Hospital, from natural causes. He worked over 20 years as a cab driver with the Yellow Cab Co., retiring in 1997. He was born Jan. 19, 1929, in East St. Louis, Ill., to Willie J. McConnell Sr. and Margaret Talbot McConnell. His wife of 38 years, Margie Thomas McConnell, whom he married in May 1961, died July 11, 1999. Survivors include four sons, Willie J. McConnell III, Ronnie D. McConnell and his wife, Margaret, Lonnie D. McConnell and Timothy L. McConnell and his wife, Angela, all of Terre Haute; four daughters, Maria T. Thomas, Teresa Coleman and her husband, Darryl, Jackie D. Washington and her husband, Michael, and Stephanie E. McConnell, all of Terre Haute; five sisters, Releatha Balentine of Chicago, Doris Huff and her husband Walter, Betty Natt and Barbara Nellum and her husband, Charlie, all of Terre Haute and Dorothy Lewis of Atlanta; 32 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Releatha McConnell. He was a member of Saints Home Church of God in Christ. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church at 2210 N. 13th St., with the Rev. Mark H. Blade officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Dunn Family Mortuary, 2005 N. 13th St.

Cary Duane Pickens

Cary Duane Pickens, 21, of Terre Haute, died Aug. 5, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a student at Indiana State University. He was born in Terre Haute on April 30, 1983, to Terry Pickens and Cindy Montgomery Pickens. Survivors include his parents, Terry and Cindy of Terre Haute; a brother, Terry Pickens of Terre Haute; two sisters, Autumn Pickens of Terre Haute and Christie Pyatt of Atlanta; paternal grandmother, Doris Pickens of Terre Haute; maternal grandmother, Peggy Montgomery of Farmersburg; aunts and uncles, Ruth Pickens, Diana Wenzel, Skeeter Southwood and her husband Kenny, Theresa Hyde and her husband Billy; Cathy Montgomery, Lloyd Montgomery, Brad Montgomery and his wife Paula, and Summers Montgomery; and several cousins. Services are 7 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Funeral Home Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Fred Harrison officiating. Cremation has been arranged. Visitation is 3 p.m. to services on Monday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

Sister Elizabeth Clare Vrabely

Sister Elizabeth Clare Vrabely, 79, died at 10:20 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. The former Elizabeth Vrabely was born in Whiting on June 9, 1925, to Stephen Vrabely and Julia Balog Vrabely. Survivors include the Rev. George Vrabely of La Porte and Mary Lasics of East Chicago. She was preceded in death by two brothers, the Revs. Stephen Vrabely and John A. Vrabely. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1944, professed first vows Aug. 15, 1946 and final vows Aug. 15, 1951. She was an educator. She taught schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in Illinois, California and Indiana, including St. Margaret Mary and the Office of Congregational Advance from 1991 to 2001, at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She received her bachelor's degree in English from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and her master's degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus officiating. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. Wake is 2:30 p.m. Monday in Providence Hall, with a wake service at 4:30 p.m. in the church. The Callahan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Myralin S. Meredith

LINTON - Myralin S. Meredith, 70, of Linton died at 9:19 p.m. Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, in Greene County General Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born Nov. 22, 1933, in Indianapolis to Otis Johnson and Ruby Hughbanks Johnson. Her husband, Jerry R. Meredith, died Dec. 26, 1985. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry L. and Jolene Meredith of Linton; two granddaughters, Michelle Meredith and Veronica Meredith, both of Linton; one grandson, Michael Meredith of Jasonville; one great-granddaughter, Shelby Meredith of Jasonville; and one great-grandson, Bradley Meredith of Jasonville. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of Jasonville Assembly of God Church. Services are 1 p.m. Tuesday in McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home, 631 E. Main St., Jasonville, with the Rev. Sam Bush officiating. Burial is in Lebanon cemetery in Midland. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Ralph Kenneth Sparks

SULLIVAN - Ralph Kenneth Sparks, 79, of Sullivan died at 8:40 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, in his residence. He worked as a service man for NIPSCO. He was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Sullivan County to Roy L. Sparks and Sarah Katy Smith Sparks. Survivors include his wife, Lucille Zeiger Sparks, whom he married Aug. 20, 1949; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Doris Sparks of Chelsea, Mich., Mark and Yvonne Sparks of Merrillville and Jeffery and Mary Sparks of South Bend; two daughters, Melodie Sparks of Gonzales, La., and Lisa Sparks of Carlisle; one sister, Marjorie Padgett of Sullivan; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Memorial services are 7 p.m. Tuesday in Alexander-Kean Funeral Home, with Brother Mitch Hoesman officiating. Cremation has taken place. Visitation is 5 p.m. until services Tuesday. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Vista Care Foundation or Riley Children's Hospital Fund.

Emanuel 'Vinnie' Foradori

Emanuel "Vinnie" Foradori, 79, of West Terre Haute, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in Union Hospital. He retired from the Indiana Highway Department where he was employed as a quality assurance technician. He was born July 25, 1925, in Terre Haute to John Foradori and Elizabeth O'Connor Foradori. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna. Survivors include one daughter, Renee Ringo and her husband Duane of West Terre Haute; one son, Charles Vincent Foradori of Terre Haute; three sisters, Mary Welsh of Terre Haute, Rose Scott and her husband Bill Sams of Terre Haute and Catherine Steppe and her husband Tom of West Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Amber Martin and John Foradori; and two great-grandchildren, Darcy Mattox and James Mattox. He also was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Angela Evelo; one brother, Mario Foradori; and a granddaughter, Kendra Bass. He was a cook in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in Okinawa, Japan, and he was present at Iwo Jima when the flag was raised for Ernie Pyle. He was a member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574 of West Terre Haute, a member of the Forty and Eight Club of Terre Haute, a member and past chaplain of the Young Men's Club of West Terre Haute and a member of American Legion Post 501 of West Terre Haute. Services are 10 a.m. Monday in St. Leonard's Catholic Church in West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Father Bernie Head officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park with graveside military rights conducted by VFW Post 6574. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with rosary service at 7 p.m. and again 7 to 9 a.m. Monday in the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the charity of choice.

Joshua Victor Kackley

Joshua Victor Kackley, 20, of Terre Haute, died at 1:38 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was employed as an orderly in surgery for Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born May 17, 1984, in Terre Haute to Jeff Kackley and Dawn Fowler Kackley. He is survived by his parents, Jeff and Dawn of Terre Haute; his girlfriend, Megan Berry of Terre Haute; one brother, Jordan Kackley of Terre Haute; one sister, Jill Kackley of Terre Haute; paternal grandparents, Geraldine and Richard Kackley of Terre Haute; maternal grandparents, Barbara and Michael Fowler of Terre Haute, Helen Schmisck of North Dakota and Jack Fowler of Kokomo; aunts and uncles, Toni and Jerry McCarty of Texas, Richard A. Kackley of Terre Haute; Heather and Jeff Howard of Terre Haute and Eric and Kim Fowler of Wisconsin; and cousins, Ryan, Shawn, Leslie, Mandy, Hilary, Ashlyn, Mitchell and Hanna. He was educated at St. Patrick's Elementary and Honey Creek Middle School. He was a graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School in 2003, and attended Ivy Tech. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He holds a track record in Vigo County, which has never been broken, and participated in Vigo County Youth football, Terre Haute South freshman football, Boy's Club basketball, and P.C.Y.R.A. baseball. Funeral Services are 10 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Friar Paul Schlomer officiating. Burial is in Mt. Pleasant cemetery. Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday in DeBaun Funeral Home Springhill Chapel.

Cary Duane Pickens

Cary Duane Pickens, 21, of Terre Haute, died Aug. 5, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a student at Indiana State University. Mary M. Howard

BRAZIL - Mary M. Howard, 88, of Brazil, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She was born July 28, 1916, in Parke County to Frank Murphy and Olive Lynch Murphy. In 1932, she married Harold Leo Howard, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 7, 1986. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John and Deanna Howard of Brazil; three daughters, Barbara Tolbert and Peggy Wells, both of Brazil, and Carol Biggs of Terre Haute; seven grandchildren, Susan Ferry and her husband Mike, Gloria Erb, Alan Stevens and his wife Kim, Troy Howard and his wife Merrie Lou, Elizabeth Francis, Vickie Bays and her husband George, Bobbie Ringo and her husband Kevin; 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Jean Howard, Betty Howard and Betty Rose, all of Brazil; one brother-in-law, Garland Williams of Carbon; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Pauline Summers Brown, Clara Williams and Ruth Pittman; two grandchildren, Peggy Stevens and Jeffrey Howard, and two sons-in-law, Everett Biggs and Roy Tolbert. She attended school in Bridgeton and had lived in Meridian Towers for over 20 years. She was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church and a member of the Brazil Eagles Lodge and the Moose Lodge. She was a devoted wife and mother, and enjoyed being with family. Services are 1 p.m. Monday in French Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leonard Steeb officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Lawn cemetery in Terre Haute. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and again Monday prior to services in the funeral home.

Carol V. Meyer

CLINTON - Carol V. Meyer, 85, of Clinton, died at 11:32 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004. She was a homemaker. She was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Parke County to Tone Hartman and May Hartman. Her husband, Fred Meyer, preceded her in death in 1978. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Delcie Meyer of Clinton and Don L. and Sue Meyer of Indianapolis; four grandsons, Brent Meyer and his wife Kim, Rob Meyer and his wife Michelle, all of Clinton, Kurt Meyer and his wife Cindy of Indianapolis and Mark Meyer of Bloomington, Ind.; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Hartman of Fort Wayne. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of Tri Kappa for 60 years. Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Monday in Roselawn Memorial Park. There is no visitation. Frist Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of choice. Envelopes will be available at the graveside service.

Greg M. Walker

JASONVILLE - Greg M. Walker, 27, of Jasonville, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in Greene County General Hospital in Linton. He was an auto mechanic with Midas Auto Service Experts in Terre Haute. He was born Sept. 30, 1976, in Terre Haute to Michael S. Walker and Vicki J. Evanoff Walker. Survivors include his parents, Michael and Vicki of Jasonville; one son, Keaton Sexton of Jasonville; one sister, Jodi Lynn Walker of Jasonville; one brother, Travis Lee Walker of Jasonville; one nephew, Donovan Brown, of Jasonville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. Services are 2 p.m. Monday in McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Archer officiating. Burial is in Peavey cemetery in Howesville. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to services Monday in the funeral home.

J. Ernest Everett Winter

INDIANAPOLIS - J. Everett Ernest Winter, 75, of Indianapolis, and formerly of Munster, died Aug. 5, 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Miller Winter. Survivors include his children, Sandy Winter and his wife, the Rev. Jeanne Winter of Terre Haute, Marc Winter and his wife Mary Beth, and Debbie Shtekel and her husband Adi; seven grandchildren, Alexandra, Sara, Samantha, Stav, Christopher, Megan and Brian; one sister, Natalie "Happy" Kramer; one sister-in-law, Patricia Winter; and many nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Zimet and Elaine Bley; and one brother, Richard Winter. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of B'nai B'rith and Congregation Beth-Israel in Munster, where he was a former board member and past president of Beth-Israel Brotherhood. Funeral services are noon Monday in Burns-Kish Funeral Home in Munster. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah, 1040 E. 86th St., Suite 46B, Indianapolis, IN 46240. Arrangements were made by Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Meridian Hills Mortuary in Indianapolis.

Alice Marie Bartlett

Alice Marie Bartlett, 84, formerly of Terre Haute died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in her daughter's residence in southern California. She was born July 3, 1920, in Riley to Grover C. Baker and Rula Price Baker. Her high school sweetheart and husband of 41 years, Paul Bartlett, died earlier. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Bartlett Henry of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; one son, Paul Jack Bartlett of Speedway; granddaughter, Paula Henry Stussy and her husband, Shawn and their sons, Penn, Chet and Tate; granddaughter, Peggy Henry Weber and her husband, Jeff; grandson, Mike Henry and his wife, Lucia; granddaughter, Meredith Bartlett and her sons, Aaron, Adam and Addison; grandson, Scott Bartlett and his wife, Donielle and their son, Brock; nieces, Vicki Broyles Waltz and Suzy Broyles Long; nephews, Carl T. Baker and James Baker; and great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and numerous cousins. She was a 1937 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Roselawn Chapel of Memories, with Cliff Simpson, reader, officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Thursday, in the chapel. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to "Saddleback Memorial Foundation for Hospice, " Saddleback Memorial Medical Center, 24451 Health Center Drive, Laguna Hills, CA 92653. Roselawn Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Elsie M. Elkin

Elsie M. Elkin, 89, of Terre Haute died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, in Davis Gardens Health Care Center. She was a homemaker. She was born May 4, 1915, in Cory to Orville V. Jeffers and Sarah Ethel Donham Jeffers. Her husband, Victor Leroy Elkin, whom she married July 6, 1955, died May 3, 1974. Survivors include two nephews, Wayne Jeffers Sr. of Brazil and Burnell Elkin of Iowa; three great-nephews, Wayne Jeffers Jr., and his wife, Jennifer of Coal City, Gary Jeffers of Lewis and Jason Jeffers of Brazil; three nieces, Sara Sprouse of Pennsylvania, Donna Sprouse of Texas and Cathy Dixon; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Her parents also died earlier. She had attended Indiana State University for three years, was a member of the Mount Calvary United Methodist Church in Brazil and also was active in the United Methodist Women's Society. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home at 605 S. 25th St. Burial is in Oak Hill cemetery in Riley. Visitation is 9 a.m. until services Thursday.
