Bernice A. Wegner

BRAZIL - Bernice A. Wegner, 92, of Brazil, died at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility. She was born Aug. 12, 1911, in southern Clay County to Anthony Fretz and Ora Lasell Fretz. Her husband, Richard A. Wegner, whom she married April 29, 1934, preceded her in death in 1975. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Roy Gayle Haddon of Reelsville; two daughters-in-law, Jean Wegner of Cincinnati and Mary Ann Wegner of Cory; five grandchildren, Linda Pell and her husband Bryan, Larry Haddon and his wife Karen, Troy Wegner and his wife Carrie, Tara Clements and her husband Jay and Tony Wegner and his wife Bryanna; 15 great-grandchildren, Carrie, Deedra and Erin Pell, Mandy, Jerrod and Justin Haddon, Dustin Stouder, Allen Warren, Jordan Wegner, Corrine, Hannah, Ian, Eric and Miles Clements, and Alex Hughes; great-great-grandchildren, Destiny and James William Stouder; one brother, H. Cecil Fretz of Center Point; four sisters, Elsie Dunn of Evans, Ga., V. Ruth Stant of Dublin, Doris E. Romas and her husband Gayle of Brazil and Norma Jean Rector of Center Point; one sister-in-law, Rosa Andrew and her husband John of Indianapolis; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Richard Warren Wegner in 1991 and Ralph Edwin Wegner in 2003; one sister, Vera Sharp; and two brothers, Ralph Fretz and Paul Fretz. She and her husband, Richard, had a family farm in Clay County for many years. They raised cattle and were grain farmers. She enjoyed quilting for many years with the Bethel United Methodist Women's quilting group. She was a member of the Better Homes and Gardens Home-Ec Club and the Union United Methodist Church. She tended the garden and canned everything she could. She was working on latch-hook rugs even while in the nursing home. She was devoted to her husband and family and was a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City, with the Revs. Dennis Alstott and Chester Hapenny officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and before services Saturday in the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Union United Methodist Church window fund or the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Wayne H. Dicus

Wayne H. Dicus, 79, of Terre Haute died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in his residence. He was a Navy veteran. He was born Jan. 5, 1925, to Alvin Dicus and Emma Dicus in Jasonville. Survivors include his wife, Mable Dicus; three stepdaughters, Linda Bailey and her husband, Tom, Dianne Moore and Tammy Graham, all of Terre Haute; two step granddaughters, April Bailey and Amy Zigler and her husband, Denny, all of Terre Haute; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Denny Thomas Zigler and Bailey Ann Zigler, all of Terre Haute; five brothers, Andrew Dicus and Jack Wilkins, both of Jasonville, Merl Wilkins, Cattaragus Wilkins and Albert Wilkins, all of New York; three sisters, Kathleen Lambert of Florida, Emma Fry of Linton and Carolyn Fry of Clay City; four daughters, Joyce Settles of Farmersburg, Marsha Shaul of Arizona, and Ronda Maurer and Renatta Farris, both of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, American Legion Riley Post 328 and Kerman Humboldt Lodge 42 Free & Accepted Masons. Services are 1 p.m. Thursday in Roselawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kyle Andrews officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. VFW Post 972 will conduct military services in the funeral home.

Martha S. Newkirk

Martha S. Newkirk, 70, of Terre Haute died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in Southwood Nursing Home. She was born April 21, 1934, in Terre Haute to John William Zeigler and Clarice Ellen Jackson Zeigler. Survivors include her husband, John D. Newkirk; two sons, John W. Newkirk and Ralph D. Newkirk and his wife Melissa, all of Terre Haute; two grandsons, Dylan Newkirk and Jacob Newkirk, both of Terre Haute; one sister-in-law, Jacqueline Mautino of Clinton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Thomas A. and Betty McConnell of Sebring Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Services are 10 a.m. Friday in Roselawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mindy Huffman officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 8 to 10 a.m. Friday. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Daniel Allen Lueckel

Daniel Allen Lueckel, 24, of Terre Haute was born Nov. 29, 1979, in Terre Haute and died Aug. 8, 2004, in Clay County. He is survived by his parents and grandparents. Graveside memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, in Highland Lawn cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Coleson officiating. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory is assisting with arrangements.

Irene Mattax Taylor

Irene Mattax Taylor, 82, of Terre Haute died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Southwood Health & Rehabilitation. She was a supervisor at Columbia House. She was born May 12, 1922, in Bryant to Paul Spade and Grace Spade. Her first husband, Thorval Mattax, died earlier. Survivors include her husband E. Howard Taylor; two daughters, Marsha Anne Thompson and her husband Dan of Houston and Paulette Sue Brown and her husband John of Terre Haute; one son, Michael Lee Mattax of New Orleans; two stepsons, Howard L. Taylor of Terre Haute and Robert E. Taylor of Florida; one stepdaughter, Martha Mae Dunbar and her husband Bill of Terre Haute; three grandchildren; six step grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church and the CBS Old Timers Club. Services are 3 p.m. Thursday in Roselawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Scott officiating. Entombment is in Roselawn Memorial Park in the Roselawn Chapel of Memories. Visitation is 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society; and/or, the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Joyce C. Karn

BRAZIL - Joyce C. Karn, 68, of Brazil died at 12:43 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in her residence. She worked at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis and later at Clay County Hospital and the Clay Health Center. She was born May 23, 1936, in Monticello to Archie Carl Doud and Bessie Elkins Doud. Survivors include her husband, Larry Karn, whom she met while nursing in Indianapolis, and married July 1, 1967, relocating to the Brazil area in 1970; three sons, Greg Karn and his wife Janice and Brad Karn and his wife Shelly, all of Brazil, and Jeff Karn of Bloomington; one daughter, Kim Holley and her husband Ted of Brazil; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Karn, Brad Karn II, Benjamin Karn, Jeffrey Karn II, Johnathon Holley, Nicholas Karn, Chelsea Holley and Kaileb Holley; two sisters, Donna Carney and her husband Jack of Lehigh, Fla., and Patty Horney and her husband Mike of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Francine Doud and Wanda Kessler; and one brother, Basil Doud. She was a 1954 graduate of Roosevelt High School and a 1957 graduate of St. Elizabeth Hospital Nursing School. She was a member of the Paralyzed Veterans Association. She enjoyed collecting dolls and jewelry, and was a devoted caregiver to all her family and friends. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Miller Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Brattain officiating. Buiral will follow in Bee Ridge cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and before services Saturday.

Robert L. Lowry

CLINTON - Robert L. Lowry, 78, of Clinton died at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was president of Lowry Wholesale Beverage, Inc., retiring in 1989. He was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Clinton to Eliphas "Tubby" Lowry and Kathleen Jacobs Lowry. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Bodnar Lowry; two sons, Curt Lowry and Mark Lowry and his wife Pam, all of Clinton; four grandchildren, Vanessa and Jordan Lowry and Sierra and Alexis Lowry; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Radio Corps. He was a member of Indiana University Alumni Association, a life member of the Zorah Shrine, Royal Order of Jesters, Jerusalem 99 Free & Accepted Masons, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory Valley of Terre Haute, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6653, American Legion Post 140 of Clinton, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Voiture 40 & 8, Vermillion County Low Twelve Club and the Clinton Golf Association. Services are 1:30 p.m. today in Frist Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Mattson officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of donor's choice.

Jeffery Lee Shaw

ROCKVILLE - Jeffery Lee Shaw, 42, of Rockville died Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a construction worker. He was born Oct. 5, 1961, in Clinton. Survivors include his parents, Robert and Janice Davies of Rockville; four brothers, Richard Shaw of Paris, Ill., Harry Tallman of Indianapolis, Tony Tallman of Coatesville and Dan Tallman of Rockville; two stepbrothers, Rodger Davies of Rockville and Ross Davies of Greencastle; one stepsister, Melinda Mace of Rockville; three sisters, Peggy Crowder of Greencastle, Ellie Tallman of Bloomingdale and Becky Johnson of Terre Haute; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles William Shaw; and one stepsister, Meredith Peacock. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel at Bono cemetery, with the Rev. John Shoffner officiating. Burial will follow. At his request, there will be no visitation. Butler Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Harriett S. Weffler Andrews

Harriett S. Weffler Andrews, 65, of Liberty, Ky., and formerly of West Terre Haute, died at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, in her residence. She was a homemaker. She was born April 8, 1939, in West Terre Haute to Arthur Weffler and Olive Ross Weffler. Survivors include her husband, James Andrews, whom she married Nov. 7, 1959, in Las Vegas; one daughter, Susan Andrews; one brother, John Weffler; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, James Andrews Jr.; and one sister. She was a graduate of Concannon High School and had graduated from business college in Indianapolis. She had worked several years ago as a car-hop for her uncle in his Dog & Suds Restaurant. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home in West Terre Haute, with the Rev. Kim I. Suits officiating. Interment is in Bethesda Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Warren L. Archer

Warren L. Archer, 73, of Largo, Fla., and formerly of Terre Haute, died Monday, July 26, 2004, in Largo Medical Center. He served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Alaska. He was born in Vigo County and moved to Florida in 1968. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Shirley; one sister, Ruth Shelby of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. He was an avid coin collector and was a 32nd degree Mason. Memorial Park Funeral Home & cemetery of St. Petersburg, Fla., assisted with arrangements.

Merrill Clifton Ellis Jr.

Merrill Clifton Ellis Jr., 70, of LaGrange, Ga., and formerly of Terre Haute died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in West Georgia Medical Center. He was born March 31, 1934, in Belfast, Maine, to Merrill Clifton Ellis Sr., and Alice Verrill Ellis, He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion Post 104 of Terre Haute. He was retired from Pitman-Moore Pharmaceuticals, where he worked as a safety manager. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of Lanett, Ala., and was a Mason and a member of Free & Accepted Masons Lodge 119. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Ellis; two daughters, Marie Spoon and her husband, Thom, of Indianapolis and Karen Hux and her husband, Jim, of Indianola, Ill.; four sons, Christopher Ellis and his wife, Karen, of Phoenix, Ariz., Mitchell Ellis and his wife, Cheryl, of LaGrange, Thomas Ellis and his wife, Jill, of Birmingham, Ala., and Fred Ellis and his wife, Jana, of Boise, Idaho; one brother, Eugene Ellis of Stockton Springs, Maine; one sister, Merylin Smith of Stockton Springs; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Hynes, C.M., officiating.

Leion Guinn

Leion Guinn, 71, of West Terre Haute died at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in Harborside Healthcare Center in Terre Haute. He was the minister at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in West Terre Haute from 1976 to 1982 and had pastored several other United Methodist Churches in the Southern Indiana Conference. He was born April 29, 1933, in Roseland, Ark., to Yancy Guinn and Virgie Mae Powell Guinn. Survivors include his wife, M. Beverly Miles Guinn, whom he married June 26, 1953, in Cottage Hills, Ill.; three daughters, Tanda Bryson and her husband, Kirk, of Liberty, Tanya Anderson of West Terre Haute and Leanna Voelker and her husband, Ken, of Brookville; one son, Leion Guinn and his wife, Tina, of Kempner, Texas; one sister, Lois Lawson of Missouri City, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Kenneth Guinn and J.W. Guinn. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Lodge 58 Free & Accepted Masons in Liberty and was the former chaplain for the Indiana State Police. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Emmanuel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jeanne Winter officiating. Burial is in Pleasantview cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with a Masonic memorial service by West Terre Haute Lodge 687 F&AM.; There will be visitation one hour prior to services, in the church. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Kathy R. Nichols

Kathy R. Nichols, 53, of Indianapolis and formerly of Terre Haute died Aug. 16, 2004, in Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. She was born June 15, 1951, in Franklin County, Va., to James "Buck" Renick and Helen Stanley Renick. Survivors include her husband, Roger D. Nichols; two daughters, Christie Yoder and Anne Nichols; two brothers, Ronnie Renick and Jimmy Renick; and one sister, Betty Blankenship. Services and burial will be in Rocky Mount, Va. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in GH Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home.
