Kenneth O. Uran Jr.

CLINTON - Kenneth O. Uran Jr., 72, of Clinton, died at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in Westridge Healthcare in Terre Haute. He had worked at Kenly Co. with his father making plastic products in Clinton until 1961. He and his family purchased Aragon Pool and operated it for many years, and he purchased, renovated and operated the last movie theater in Clinton. He was born in Terre Haute to Kenneth Uran and Millicent Gebhart Uran, and was raised there. Survivors include one sister, Jean Foltz and her husband Donald; one niece, Julia Foltz; one nephew, Tim Foltz and his wife Nancy; and two great-nieces, Kathleen and Melissa Foltz. He was a 1949 graduate of Wiley High School. He also graduated from Purdue University as an electrical engineer. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in the early 1950s. Graveside services are 5:30 p.m. today in Spangler cemetery, with the Rev. Wendell Adams officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of choice. Frist Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Gard Roeschlein

BRAZIL - Nellie Gard Roeschlein, 94, of Brazil died at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, in Harborside Healthcare Facility in Terre Haute. She worked at the Cory Orchards and also Chesty Foods in Terre Haute. She was born Aug. 4, 1910, in Clay County to Ross and Iva Gard Tucker. Her husband, Lester Ell Roeschlein, died in 1980. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Charlotte Roeschlein of Farmersburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Lloyd Schopmeyer of Brazil; five grandchildren, Timothy Roeschlein, Tony Roeschlein and wife Eva, Jane Roeschlein, Lisa Burnett and husband Mark, Kevin Schopmeyer and wife Hannah; six great-grandchildren, Jessica Roeschlein, Zachary Roeschlein, Chris Burnett, Josette Burnett, Tyler Burnett and Mark Burnett; many nieces and nephews; and other extended family members. She also was preceded in death by her parents, and 10 brothers and sisters. She graduated from Cory High School, and in years past had helped her husband with farming. She was a member of Cory Zion Church, was active in the Zion Ladies Aid and Home Economics Group and was a member of Riley Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling, fishing and gardening. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, with the Rev. Anthony Ferriel officiating. Burial will follow in Van Cleve cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and before services Friday. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Zion Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

Ernest Deagan

Ernest Deagan, 80, of Lafayette and formerly of Terre Haute died at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, in his residence. He was a teacher for the Lafayette School Corp., from 1952 to 1986, and also managed the Sunnyside Theater. He was born Feb. 18, 1924, in Terre Haute and had been a resident of Lafayette for 52 years. Survivors include his wife, Roberta Mitchell Deagan, whom he married in 1950; one son, Robert of Lafayette; three daughters, Ann Romberg and her husband Don of Indianapolis, Gail Wiley and her husband Hunt of West Lafayette and Carol Schuler and her husband Tom of Elkins, W.Va.; one sister, Barbara Andrews and her husband Richard of Columbia, Mo.; and five grandchildren, Jason Romberg, Ted and Nate Wiley and Katie and Houston Schuler. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Deagan Sr., and Lydia Waltz Deagan. He attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana State University. After his retirement, he served as technical director for the Long Center for Performing Arts until 2001. During World War II, he served in the 3rd Corps Artillery for the 3rd Army in northern France. He was a past president of the Lafayette Education Association, a board member of the Indiana State Teachers' Association and a member of the National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Tau Omega, Kiwanis, Indiana Historic Landmarks and Wabash Valley Trust and a board member of the Long Center. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award in 2001, the Heart of Perrin Award, the Wabash Valley Trust Award, the "Susie" Award from the TIppecanoe Arts Federation and was named to the Lafayette School Corp. Wall of Fame in 1993. He also served as the grand marshal of the second Lafayette Christmas parade. Private family services are Saturday. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Hippensteel Funeral Home in Lafayette. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Long Center for Performing Arts or to Wabash Center.

Mary M. Fox

Mary M. Fox, 89, of Seelyville died at 4:25 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in Meadows Manor North. She was a homemaker. She was born July 22, 1915, in Terre Haute to Grover Stringer and Myrtle Stringer. Her husband, Marion Fox, died Sept. 27, 1980. Survivors include two sons, Marion Fox and his wife, Darlene of Poland, Ind., and David Fox of Seelyville; two daughters, Joyce Hayne and her husband, Ron of Terre Haute and Jane Burris and her husband, Allan of St. Mary-of-the-Woods; six grandchildren, Lori Howell, Brad Burris, Bart Hayne and his wife, Jennifer, Donna Bean and her husband, Ronnie, Marcia Brown and her husband, Kevin, and Scott Walden; nine great-grandchildren, Ricky and Tiffany Howell, Lucy Hayne, Brandon and Ben Payton, Helen and Philip Bean and Austin and Hunter Brown; three sisters-in-law, Marie Stringer, Ruby Stringer and Merom Barnes; one brother-in-law, Herschel Fox and his wife, Lola; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters and brothers, Sylvia Riggs, Nellie Riggs, Gene Stringer, Bill Stringer, Maxine Stringer, Helen Skidgel, Alberta Moore and Harold Stringer. She enjoyed playing bingo, drinking her Pepsi (her husband had worked for Pepsi for 38 years) and her trips to Oregon. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Coffman officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The family suggests if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the activity department at Meadows Manor North; the Susan Komen Foundation; or, to McMillan Adult Day Care Center.

Jessie Ruth Hall

Jessie Ruth Hall, 64, of Terre Haute died at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in her residence. She was a retired teacher from Hamilton Center Child & Adolescent Services. She was born July 21, 1940, in Solsberry to Crockett Arthur and Margaret Lois Fuller Arthur. Survivors include her husband, E. Vaughn Hall, whom she married Oct. 22, 1960; two daughters, Holly E. Hall and Katie A. Hall-Page; her mother; one sister, Audrey June Ferguson and her husband, Robert; one granddaughter, Carmen Elizabeth Page; one niece, Kim Ferguson Swayze and her family; and several aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her father. She was a member of Maryland Community Church, where she started the Pre-School Program and member of the Indiana Federation of Teachers. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Greven officiating. Burial is in Mount Pleasant cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Wednesday. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity or to Vista Care Hospice.

Larry Ray King

Larry Ray King, 56, of Terre Haute died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove after a hard-fought battle against leukemia. He was retired from JI Case. He was born Nov. 1, 1948, in Terre Haute to Ray King and Marjorie Alice "Short" King. Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Linda Funk King; two daughters, Lisa Watkins and Lori Horrall and her husband, Ron; one sister, Mary Deal and her husband, Bill; two nephews, Bill Deal and his wife, Tracey and Kevin Deal; stepmother, Margaret King; two stepbrothers; three stepsisters; five grandchildren, Chris Leturgez, D.J. Watkins, Blake, Gabrielle and Isabella Horrall. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of the William Penn Masonic Lodge. He was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Services are 10 a.m. today in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Herb officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Vada Margaret Snoddy

Vada Margaret Snoddy, 92, of Terre Haute died at 1:50 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare Center. She was employed by Purdue University Home Extension Service, Columbia Records and Reuben H. Donnelly Corp. She was born in Washington to Adney J. Morton and Gertrude M. Morton. Her husband of 70 years, Elbert L. Snoddy, died in 2002. Survivors include two sons, Richard Snoddy and Ronald Snoddy; one daughter, Carolyn Benjamin; one sister, Eleanor Blue; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Snoddy, Janet Kawa, Scott Benjamin, Jill Benjamin and Julie Benjamin; and five great-grandchildren. She was a member of Maplewood Christian Church, where she helped establish the Son Shine Center for senior citizens and was a member of The Homemaker's Club and the Grandmother's Club. Services are noon Thursday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev.Larry Scott officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services.

Floyd M. Loser

Floyd M. Loser, 83, of Portage died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in The Arbors Nursing Home in Michigan City. He was a crane operator for U.S. Steel. He was born May 30, 1921, in Owen County to James Alison Loser and Clara Orman Loser. His wife, Mary Ruth Laughman Loser, died earlier. Survivors include one sister, Nellie Wardle of Terre Haute; two sisters-in-law, Betty Loser of Terre Haute and Lillian Loser of Tennessee; one nephew, Ronald Loser of LaPorte; nieces, Linda Easton and her husband, Al of LaPorte, Midge Webster and her husband Larry of Terre Haute and Loretta Roberts and her husband Tim of West Terre Haute; and several other nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Pearl Harris; and four brothers, Earl, Carl, Charlie and Gilbert Loser. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Portage Veterans of Foreign Wars and Portage Bible Baptist Church. Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Idaho Chapel, with the Rev. James Gibson officiating. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by VFW Post 972.

Jack Leonard Loser

Jack Leonard Loser, 84, of Indianapolis and formerly of Terre Haute died at 6:35 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born to Elsie G. Loser and Glen H. Loser, Dec. 13, 1919, in Vincennes. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty G. Loser Mitchell; and one niece, Linda Alumbaugh Driver. Survivors include two sisters, Mary M. Loser of Indianapolis and Nancy J. Sipes and her husband Thomas F. of Terre Haute; two nephews, John S. Mitchell and his wife Cheryl of Carmel and Thomas F. Sipes II and his wife Deanna of Terre Haute; two nieces, Lisa A. Tarrh and her husband David and Mary K. Love and her husband Ron, all of Terre Haute; 12 great-nieces and great-nephews; and five great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He graduated from Garfield High School, class of 1937, and in 1943, he obtained his undergraduate degree from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He received his master's degree of science in engineering from Purdue University in 1956. He worked at the Naval Avionics Center in Indianapolis for more than 37 years, where he retired in 1984, as Director of Applied Research. In 1984, he was awarded the Navy's Meritorious Civilian Service Award. He was widely recognized and acclaimed for leadership and scientific and technical knowledge in the field of Naval aviation electronics. His unique career encompassed the development of avionics systems which contributed in a very significant manner to advancement of the country's defense capabilities. He was a member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church in Terre Haute, a member of Brookside Lodge 720 Free & Accepted Masons in Indianapolis for more than 50 years, and was a member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton St., with the Rev. Monty Barker officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 9 p.m. today.

Niola C. Stuffle

Niola C. Stuffle, 92, of Terre Haute, died at 5:05 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Southwood Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Jan. 10, 1912, in Martin County to Jacob Liston Barnes and Esta Wagner Barnes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Stuffle May 6, 1993. Survivors include one son and his wife, David and Barbara Stuffle; six daughters, Mickey Jenkins, Golden Nadine Hofmann and her husband, Robert, Joan Halt and her husband, Cecil, Sharon Sipple and her husband, Frank, Avanda Hamn, and Jean Matherly and her husband, Moe; one sister, Olive Simmons; 19 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Norma Sams; and one brother, Donald Barnes. She was a member of Faith Wesleyan Church. She loved cooking for her family and friends, playing the piano and singing. Earlier in her life, she sang with a ladies gospel quartet throughout the Wabash Valley. She also had written her autobiography. She was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Ferren officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, in the funeral home.

Norma Funk

BRAZIL - Norma Funk, 76, of Brazil died at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, in her residence. She had been in failing health for sometime. At one time, she owned a beauty salon in Bowling Green and one in her home in the Knightsville area. She was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Van Buren Township in Clay County to George Wolford and Ida Nicoson Wolford. Survivors include her husband, Everett Funk, whom she married Dec. 20, 1947; two sons, George Funk and Allen Funk, both of Brazil; one uncle, the Rev. Max Nicoson and his wife Betty of Seymour; one aunt, Evangeline Wolford; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, George Wolford. She was a 1946 graduate of Van Buren High School and a graduate of Smart Appearance Beauty School. She also did bookwork for James H. Price Sun Oil Bulk Plant. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star for more than 25 years, and was a past member of the Rebekahs. She was a life-long member of the Benwood Mount Lebanon Church. She had a love of music and singing and sang in church, and with the "Harmonetts" and the "Gospel Tones". Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in French Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dick McShanog officiating. Burial is in Calcutta cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Benwood Mount Lebanon Church Campground Project. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.

William Miles Johnston

SHELBURN - William Miles Johnston, 81, of Shelburn died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in Sullivan County Community Hospital. He was retired from Chesty Foods. He was born June 3, 1923, in Hartford, Ky., to James Willis Johnston and Rosa Belle McCrady. Survivors include his loving wife, Sarah; three daughters, Jeannette Boles, Becky Rehmel and her husband Ronnie and Racheal Litzsch and her husband Clayton; four sons, Clarence D. McClure and his wife Marty, Gary M. Walker, Kenny Walker and his wife Tricia, all of Shelburn and Paul R. Kasinger of Sullivan; grandchildren, Nichole Boyll, Brooke Caton and her husband Randy, Jamie Burns and his wife, Amy, Angela Fuller and her husband Brian, Heather Kasinger, Zackery Kasinger, Alexis Kasinger, James Walker, Jessica Walker, Ronee Rehmel, Romara Rehmel, Kendra Walker, Katelynn Walker, Corey Litzsch and Courtney Litzsch; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, James Johnston; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was a member of American Legion Post 197, Teamsters Local 153 and Church of God in Shelburn. He was a World War II veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He loved to tease his family and bounce the grandchildren on his knee. He will be remembered as a kind and loving man by his family and friends. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, in Mattox-Fidler Funeral Home in Farmersburg, with burial to follow in Westlawn cemetery in Farmersburg. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
