Ruth Salin Tilley

BRAZIL - Ruth Salin Tilley, 90, of Brazil died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004, in her residence. She had enjoyed a lifetime of excellent health. She was born Jan. 19, 1914, in Brazil to Francis H. Salin and Anna Akers Salin. She was raised in Hadleytown, a neighborhood on East Pinckley Street. She completed the first eight grades at Hadleytown School, and graduated from Brazil High School in 1932, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Brazil Chapter 80 since Feb. 17, 1950. She was baptized in First Christian Church at the age of 14, and most recently attended Berea Christian Church. She married Maurice C. Tilley on June 16, 1938, and he preceded her in death in 1997. They had two children, John P. Tilley and Dean E. Tilley; and four grandchildren, Dr. Ann Elizabeth Tilley, John Charles Tilley, Dylan Charles Tilley and Brittany Salin Tilley. Survivors include her son, John P. Tilley and his wife Suzie; their children, Dr. Ann E. Tilley and John C. Tilley; Dean's children, Dylan C. Tilley and Brittany S. Tilley, and their mother, Amanda Tilley; a sister, Helen S. Winklepleck and her husband John; and several nieces and nephews. She also was preceded in death by her son, Dean, in 2002, and her sister, Freida Vance, in 2004. She had a keen mind and excellent memory and enjoyed working crossword puzzles. She could recite the Gettysburg Address, preamble to the Constitution, her address when she was inducted into the National Honor Society and the Masonic Funeral Lecture, which she retained when she helped her husband learn it years ago. She was fond of recalling the early 1940s, when her husband was Clay County sheriff and she served as jail matron, which included cooking for inmates and doing the laundry. As a young lady, she worked for the Kidd Insurance Agency, and later at Riddell National Bank, retiring in 1979. She and her husband enjoyed traveling. The traveled to Paris, France, to visit her relatives and to visit the cemetery in Momart where many of her paternal relatives are buried. She was especially fond of their trip to Hawaii, and they enjoyed many vacations together in south Florida. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday in French Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Hess officiating. Burial is in Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, and noon to services Tuesday in the funeral home.

Jerry Lee Fougerousse

Jerry Lee Fougerousse, 64, of Terre Haute died at 3:50 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, in Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. He was employed with CBS for many years and also worked at Crane Naval Base. He was born Aug. 21, 1940, in Hymera to Howard Fougerousse and Evelyn "Sis" Martin Fougerousse. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Evelyn "Sis" and Roy Allaway of Terre Haute; one son, Jon Michael Fougerousse of Memphis, Tenn.; his soulmate, Joyce Laine of Memphis; two stepsons, Eddie Ice of Terre Haute and Jeff Ice of Memphis; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pat and Earl Leclercq and Shirley and Phil Padgett, all of West Terre Haute; two uncles; five nieces, seven nephews; six great-nephews, five great-nieces; and one great-great-niece. He was preceded in death by his father in 1947; one brother, Billy Dean Fougerousse, in 2002; one sister, Scottie Landes, in 1977; and one nephew, Alton Shacklett, in 1971. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving for 12 years. During the Vietnam War, he received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post in Sullivan. A memorial service is planned later, with burial in Lebanon cemetery in Midland. Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Louis N. Knox

Louis N. Knox, 63, of Terre Haute died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in his residence. He was a maintenance mechanic for Pfizer, retiring in 1998. He was born Nov. 1, 1940, in Terre Haute to Samuel Knox and Irene Norton Knox. Survivors include one daughter, Nicole Walker and her husband, Kale of Terre Haute; two sisters, Frieda Knox of Terre Haute and Carol Taylor of Indianapolis; two brothers, Herman T. Knox and his wife, Evelyn of Terre Haute and Gregory H. Knox of Tacoma, Wash.; three grandchildren, Loreal Knox, LaChelle Roberts and Cayleb Knox, all of Terre Haute; four aunts, Maxine Benford of Warren, Ohio, and Lucille Owens, Carolyn Armstead and Ella Mae Towles, all of South Bend; and a special friend, Tinita Smith of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Jeffrey N. Knox in 2000. He was a 1960 graduate of Gerstmeyer High School and a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 2415 Seventh Ave., with the Rev. Henry E. Barnhill officiating. Burial is in Stewart Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 pm. today in Dunn Family Mortuary, 2005 N. 13th St.

Pauline E. Warf

Pauline E. Warf, 86, of Shelbyville, Ill., and formerly of Terre Haute, died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, in Shelbyville Manor. She was born June 4, 1918, in Dover, Tenn., to James "Crit" Critton and Maude Woodson Wallace Critton. Her husband, Raymond Warf, preceded her in death on Feb. 28, 1989. Survivors include one son, Doug Warf and his wife, Dixie, of Shelbyville; one sister, Robbye Hargis of Clarksville, Tenn.; three grandsons, Dannis Warf and his wife, Robin, of Shelbyville, Dana Warf and his wife, Judy, of Windsor, Ill., and Darin Warf and his wife, Heather, of Mattoon, Ill; one granddaughter, Dara Johnston and her husband, Clint, of Forsythe, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are 3 p.m. Saturday in Howe & Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville, with the Rev. Mike Pringle officiating. Burial is in Glenwood cemetery. Visitation is 1 p.m. to services Saturday in the funeral home.

David 'Kent' Wilson

David "Kent" Wilson, 67, of Terre Haute died in his residence Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004. He was a truck driver for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co., retiring after 35 years of service. He was born Oct. 11, 1936, in Terre Haute to Paul Woodrow Wilson and Virginia Needham Wilson. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Mary Jean Allen Wilson; his mother,Virginia; three sons, David A. Wilson and his wife, Joann, Randy K. Wilson and his wife, Chris, and John K. Wilson and his fiancee, Kim Judson; two daughters, Terri Mark Wilkinson and special friend, Jim, and Susan A. Mace and her husband, Eddie; three sisters; Sharon Daugherty, Shirley Trosper and her husband, Gary, and Lois Melvin and her husband, Gail; four brothers, Ronald J. Wilson, Edward Wilson and his wife, Delores, Richard Wilson and his wife, Sherry, and John H. Wilson and his wife, Betty; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul, and one grandson, David Allen Wilson. He was a past president of Nevins Volunteer Fire Department and past president of Miss Softball America. He had a passion for gardening roses and tomatoes. He was an avid collector of Coca-Cola memorabilia. He made several trips to Florida each year with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and son. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bill Herb Officiating. Burial follows in Rosedale. Pallbearers are Brandon Mace, Brent Wilkinson, Bronson Wilkinson, Eric Wilson, Kevin Wilson and Richard Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are Dusty Hill and Michael Mace. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Ruth Blice Schauwecker

CARLISLE - Ruth Blice Schauwecker, 91, of Carlisle died at 2:55 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 2004, in Sullivan Health and Living Center. She was a homemaker. She was born April 2, 1913, in Carlisle to Carl Knotts and Gertrude Coleman Knotts. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ben Blice, and her second husband, Charles Schauwecker. Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Blice and his wife, Carol, of Beech Grove and Jerry Blice and his wife, Martha, of West Terre Haute; two daughters, Virginia Parsons and her husband, Roy, of Sullivan and Wanda Bennett and her husband, Jim, of Carlisle; one brother, Carl "Dick" Knotts of Carlisle; three sisters, Lois Monroe of Carlisle, Erma Dugan and Norma Mason, both of Sullivan; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Carolyn Porter; one sister, Helen Lake; and one grandchild. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Carlisle. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan, with the Rev. David Simpson officiating. Burial is in Shepherd cemetery in rural Carlisle. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Anna M. Scott

SULLIVAN - Anna M. Scott, 82, of Sullivan died at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, in Sullivan Health and Living Center. She was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Sullivan County to Irvin Darrough and Dolly Ellison Darrough. Her husband, Thomas William Scott, preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons, Thomas Scott Jr. of Paxton, Tim Scott of Sullivan and Lloyd Scott of Worthington; two daughters, Gloria Scott of Sullivan and Darlene Baker of Bloomfield; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services are 1:30 p.m. Monday in Shepherd cemetery, rural Carlisle, with the Rev. David Cox officiating. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday in McClure-Utt Funeral Home, Oaktown Chapel.

Dorothy Lucas Jewell Beck

Dorothy Lucas Jewell Beck, 96, of Terre Haute died Monday morning, Aug. 23, 2004, in her residence. She was born Feb. 24, 1908, in Terre Haute to Andrew Berg and Catherine Wirtz Berg. She was preceded in death by three husbands, James Lucas, Nov. 13, 1954; Lawrence Jewell, April 27, 1971; and Cecil Beck, March 11, 1994. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Gerald Hartsock of Terre Haute; two sisters, Mary Blake of Terre Haute and Betty Warner of Brazil; two grandchildren, Gary Hartsock and Cheryl Shattuck and her husband, Mitch; two great-grandchildren, Aaron Shattuck and his wife, Jennifer and Lindsey Shattuck; two great-great-grandchildren, Logan Shattuck and Triston Shattuck; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Andrew Berg; and two sisters, Rosemary Rushford and Etta Blake. She was a member of Central Christian Church, Badoura Temple 23 Daughters of the Nile and Krietenstein American Legion Post 104 Auxiliary. Services are 2 p.m. Friday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Jimmy Baldwin officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to Vista Care Hospice Foundation, 3900 S. Seventh St., Terre Haute, IN 47802; or, to Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2001 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63131-3597.

Walter G. Sutphin

LINTON - Walter G. Sutphin, 83, of Linton died at 5:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in Bloomington Hospital. He was a welder for Amax Coal Co. for 43 years before retirement. He was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Dugger to Walter M. Sutphin and Hazle Gosney Sutphin. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Roach Sutphin, and his second wife, Joanna Leavitt Sutphin. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Beth Tiek and her husband, Kenny of Linton and Rebecca Reed and her husband, Steve of Ellettsville; one stepdaughter, Suzanne Zimmer and her husband, Bob of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one stepson, Steven Struckmeyer and his wife, Marianne of Dalton, Mich.; one brother, Paul Sutphin of Peoria, Ill.; six grandchildren, Brandon Tiek, Kiersten Hagquist and April, Steven, Amanda and Chris Reed; five step grandchildren, Jason and Kevin Zimmer, and Dustin, Phil and Elizabeth Struckmeyer; four great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; two nieces and three nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, William Randolph Sutphin; and two brothers, John and William Sutphin. He was a life member of the Navy Sea Bees, serving in Europe and the Asian-Pacific during World War II. He was a member of Saron United Church of Christ, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 866 and Masonic Lodge 560, all of Linton, the United Mine Workers of America 1423 of Terre Haute and the Lyons American Legion. He was an active member of the Terre Haute Banks of the Wabash Barbershop Chorus for 57 years, singing throughout the United States, England and Japan. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Friday in Welch & Cornett Funeral Home Linton Chapel, with the Rev. Erica Roth officiating. Burial follows in Fairview cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 22 of Linton. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to services Friday in the funeral home.

Bill D. Brewer

Bill D. Brewer, 78, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was a retired welder for J.I. Case. He was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Dwarf, Ky., to McKinley Brewer and Mary Jane Stewart Brewer. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Winifred "Imogene" Bevis Brewer; five sons, Danny M. Brewer of Arvada Colo., Sam Brewer Emery of Huron, Ohio, Barry Brewer of Terre Haute, Terry Brewer of Clinton, and Danny A. Brewer Rodger of Freedom; five daughters, Donna Thompson and Brenda Placsak, both of Riley, and Sandra Brewer, Mary J. Myers and Billie J. Thompson, all of Terre Haute; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four brothers, J.C. Brewer, Mack Brewer and Ezra Brewer, all of Dwarf, and Albert Brewer; and two sisters, Polly Roberts of Georgetown, Ky., and Blanche Everage of Emmalina, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry Brewer and Jonas Brewer; and one daughter, Billie Jean Brewer. He was a Maritime Merchant Marine and a member of American Legion Post 501. His family will remember him as a loving father, gardener and master craftsman. His favorite saying will be remembered by many as "I can fix anything but broken hearts, broken promises and the crack of dawn." He often stated that he could fix the Liberty Bell and no one would know it had been broken. Services are 5 p.m. Sunday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Cremation is scheduled with inurnment later. Visitation is 1 p.m. Sunday to services in the funeral home.

Joseph M. Dierdorf Jr.

Joseph M. Dierdorf Jr., 56, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in his residence. He was a Terre Haute Police Department patrolman for 30 years. He was born Feb. 7, 1948, in Terre Haute to Joseph M. Dierdorf Sr. and Ethel L. Judd Dierdorf. He is survived by his wife, Deb; two sons, John Dierdorf and Michael Dierdorf; two sisters, Merleen Baumgardner of Clay County, Ind., and Georgia Henderson of California; and one brother, David Dierdorf of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Sandra Purdy. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the International Union of Police Association. During his time off, he frequently visited Florida. He loved the ocean and deep-sea fishing. Services are 11 a.m. today in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Walls officiating. Presentation of the flag will be conducted by the Terre Haute Police Honor Guard. Cremation is scheduled. Memorial contributions may be mad to Riley Children's Hospital.

Mary Catherine Finton Smith

Mary Catherine Finton Smith, 93, of Terre Haute died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was the retired director of Meals on Wheels. She was born Jan. 2, 1911, in Prairie Creek to Pearl J. Finton and Annie Weeks Finton. Her husband, Carl Mason Smith, preceded her in death in 1961. She is survived by one son, John R. Smith and his wife Donna; one daughter, Carla Norris and her husband Carl; five grandchildren; Bridget Eastland and her husband Richard, John Massey and his wife Beth, David Norris and his wife Heather, Stacey Bose and her husband Steve, and Tuesday Strong and her husband Gary; and nine great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one sister, Ina Sanqunetti; one grandson, Marvin Pruett; and one great-grandchild. She was a member of Terre Haute First Baptist Church for 75 years, and a member of its Homebuilder's Class for over 50 years. She had been an active member of the Christian Women's Club, and was involved in many social services groups and church activities. Above all, she loved and cherished her family. Services are 1 p.m. today in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Bernie Jackson officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park.
