Dorothy H. Sabla, 85, of Martinsville, Ind., and formerly of Terre Haute, died at 10:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3, 2004, in Grandview Convalescent Center in Martinsville. She was born Oct. 30, 1918, in Morgan County to Robert O'Neal and Bernice Stewart O'Neal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Sabla. She is survived by one brother, Earl O'Neal of Paragon; and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Schultz cemetery in Martinsville, with the Rev. Tom Scott officiating. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Costin Funeral Chapel in Martinsville.

Marie Anna Taylor

Marie Anna Taylor, 91, of Terre Haute died Wednesday afternoon in Union Hospital. She worked at Quaker Maid and also was a homemaker. She was born Feb. 7, 1913, in Peoria County, Ill., to Walter Lawrence and Elizabeth Ovilla Palmer Lawrence. She married Arthur Forrest Taylor, and he preceded her in death on July 2, 2002. Survivors include one brother, John Nelson Lawrence and his wife Barbara of Terre Haute; three sisters, Betty June Farr of Mattoon, Ill., Emma Juanita Knight of Orlando, Fla., and Ovilla Bernice Cole and her husband Eugene of Decatur, Ill.; four nieces, Camellia "Susie" Lawrence Setliff and her husband Rick of Terre Haute, Sherry Ann Willis and her husband Ralph of Mansfield, Brenda Kay Thompson and her husband Kenneth of Terre Haute and Alohna Z. L. Morrow and her husband Glen of Brazil, and several other nieces and nephews; four great-nephews, Ryan Goshen, Jonathan Goshen, Michael Foster, Logan Thompson, and other great-nephews; and two great-nieces, Camille Morrow and Bethany Morrow. She also was preceded in death by five brothers, Calvin Munsen Lawrence, Charles Lester "Toots" Lawrence, Wilbur Edward "Web" Lawrence, Walter Lawrence and Leonard Andrew "Mike" Lawrence. Services are 2 p.m. today in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Ernie Peckham officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Friends and relatives will gather at the Lawrence residence following burial. Memorial contributions may be made to the Terre Haute Adventist School.

Bill D. Brewer

Bill D. Brewer, 78, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was a retired welder for J.I. Case. He was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Dwarf, Ky., to McKinley Brewer and Mary Jane Stewart Brewer. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Winifred "Imogene" Bevis Brewer; five sons, Danny M. Brewer of Arvada Colo., Sam Brewer of Huron, Ohio, Barry Brewer of Terre Haute, Terry Brewer of Clinton, and Danny A. Brewer of Freedom; five daughters, Donna Thompson, Mary J. Myers and Brenda Placsak, all of Riley, and Sandra Brewer and Billie J. Thompson, both of Terre Haute; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four brothers, J.C. Brewer, Mack Brewer and Ezra Brewer, all of Dwarf, and Albert Brewer; and two sisters, Polly Roberts of Georgetown, Ky., and Blanche Everage of Emmalina, Ky. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry Brewer and Jonas Brewer; and one daughter, Billie Jean Brewer. He was a Maritime Merchant Marine and a member of American Legion Post 501. His family will remember him as a loving father, gardener and master craftsman. His favorite saying will be remembered by many as "I can fix anything but broken hearts, broken promises and the crack of dawn." He often stated that he could fix the Liberty Bell and no one would know it had been broken. Services are 5 p.m. Sunday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Smith officiating. Cremation is scheduled with inurnment later. Visitation is 1 p.m. Sunday to services in the funeral home.

Harold W. Copeland

Harold W. Copeland, 85, of Terre Haute died at 7:23 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was a retired automobile salesman. He was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Merom to Roscoe Copeland and Louise Vickery Copeland. Survivors include one son, Jim Copeland and his wife Marsha of Logansport; special friend, Ruth Baxter of Terre Haute; one sister, Carolyn Orr of Terre Haute; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives. He was a graduate of Merom High School. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Merom cemetery. Holmes Memorial Chapel in Sullivan is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph M. Dierdorf Jr.

Joseph M. Dierdorf Jr., 56, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in his residence. He was a Terre Haute Police Department patrolman for 30 years. He was born Feb. 7, 1948, in Terre Haute to Joseph M. Dierdorf Sr. and Ethel L. Judd Dierdorf. He is survived by his wife, Deb; two sons, John Dierdorf and Michael Dierdorf; two sisters, Merleen Baumgardner of Clay County, Ind., and Georgia Henderson of California; and one brother, David Dierdorf of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Sandra Purdy. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the International Union of Police Association. During his time off, he frequently visited Florida. He loved the ocean and deep-sea fishing. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Walls officiating. Presentation of the flag will be conducted by the Terre Haute Police Honor Guard. Cremation is scheduled. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Sister Elizabeth Ann (Catherine Lucille) Flori

Sister Elizabeth Ann Flori, 78, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods died at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Mother Theodore Hall of St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was an educator. The former Catherine Lucille Flori was born Jan. 30, 1926, in Arvada, Colo., to Anthony James Flori and Novel Elizabeth Colvin Flori. Survivors include two brothers, George B. Flori of Goodland Kan., and Robert A. Flori of Longmont, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy L. Andis. She attended Arvada grade school, junior high school and the first two years of high school in Arvada. She graduated from St. Rose High School in Vincennes, received her bachelor's degree in education from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and her master's degree in education from Indiana State University. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1945, professed First Vows Jan. 23, 1948, and Final Vows on Jan 23, 1953. She taught in schools staffed by the Sisters of Providence in Indiana, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas and California. During her 59 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 15 years as principal in schools and for 18 years ministered in Health Care Services in the Motherhouse in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Wake is 2:30 p.m. today in Providence Hall. Wake service is 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Saturday in the church, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence, in St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Callahan Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Catherine G. Jones

Catherine G. Jones, 82, of Terre Haute died at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Terre Haute Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was a homemaker, and also was a retired medical secretary for Dr. Feliciano. She was born Nov. 13, 1921, in Terre Haute, to Mike Davis and Maude Davis. Her husband, Joseph S. Jones, preceded her in death in October 1998. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Jerry Unsinger of Terre Haute; and two grandsons, David Unsinger and Keith Unsinger. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Hubert Davis and Don Davis; and one sister, Betty Wampler. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Roselawn Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. David Deal officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 10 a.m. to services Saturday in the chapel. DeBaun Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Michael W. Scott

Michael W. Scott, 51, of Terre Haute died at 2:17 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born Aug. 28, 1953, in Terre Haute to Robert William Scott Sr. and Evelyn Marie Mace Scott. Survivors include five daughters, Christina Scott, Stacy Scott, Bobbie Jo Robinson, Leslie Fannin and Lisa Patterson; one son, Richard Cooper; two brothers, Robert Scott Jr., and Brad Scott; and his former wife, Betty Irene Switzer. Services are 11 a.m. today in Highland Lawn cemetery Chapel. Burial will follow, with military rites by Wayne Newton Post 346 American Legion.

Mary Catherine Finton Smith

Mary Catherine Finton Smith, 93, of Terre Haute died at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was the retired director of Meals on Wheels. She was born Jan. 2, 1911, in Prairie Creek to Pearl J. Finton and Annie Weeks Finton. Her husband, Carl Mason Smith, preceded her in death in 1961. She is survived by one son, John R. Smith and his wife Donna; one daughter, Carla Norris and her husband Carl; five grandchildren; Bridget Eastland and her husband Richard, John Messy and his wife Beth, David Norris and his wife Heather, Stacey Bose and her husband Steve, and Tuesday Strong and her husband Gary; and nine great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by one sister, Ina Sangunetti; one grandson, Marvin Pruett; and one great-grandchild. She was a member of Terre Haute First Baptist Church for 75 years, and a member of its Homebuilder's Class for more than 50 years. She had been an active member of the Christian Women's Club, and was involved in many social services groups and church activities. Above all, she loved and cherished her family. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Bernie Jackson officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Mary J. Corbin

DUGGER - Mary J. Corbin, 103, of Dugger died at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, in the Waters Nursing Home in Martinsville, Ind. She was born Aug. 26, 1901, in Greene County to McCelland Wright and Mary Horn Wright. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Corbin. Survivors include two sons, Jack Corbin of Spencer and Hester Corbin of Indianapolis; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 31 great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Raymond Corbin Jr. and Carl Corbin; and two daughters, Lillian Delores Phillippe and Virginia Wilkes. She was a member of Dugger United Methodist Church. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Newkirk's Funeral Home, with the Revs. Keith Pope and John Booker officiating. Burial is in Dugger cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today and before services Saturday in the funeral home.

Irmal D. Strate

CARLISLE - Irmal D. Strate, 82, of Carlisle died at 5:35 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, in Oak Village in Oaktown. She was a homemaker. She was born June 12, 1922, in Sullivan County to Charles A. Riggle and Mamie Warner Riggle. Her husband, Edgar Harold Strate, whom she married in 1938, preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1999. She is survived by one son, Charles Strate of Somersworth, N.H.; one daughter, Mary Ann McCann of Carlisle; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Della Steelman of Vincennes. She also was preceded in death by one son, Bruce; one sister; and six brothers. She was a member of Shaker Prairie Christian Church. Services are 2 p.m. Sunday in McClure-Utt Funeral Home in Oaktown, with the Rev. Keith Hazelwood officiating. Burial is in Shepherd cemetery, rural Carlisle. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Inez Brooks

Inez Brooks, 88, of Terre Haute died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004. She was born Aug. 3, 1916, in West Terre Haute to Fred E. Boling Sr. and Pearl E. Clark Boling. Her husband, George, died in 1990. Survivors include two sons, Don Brooks and wife Jocelyn of Springville, and Jon Brooks of Clear Creek; four grandchildren, Jennifer England, Gretchen Brooks, Aaron Brooks and Bryan Brooks; and six great-grandchildren, Chelsea Nikirk, Morgan England, Lauren England, Olivia Brooks, Eliza Brooks and Nathan Brooks. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Laura Olmi; and one brother, Fred Boling Jr. She was an active person with a legendary memory of local affairs and enjoyed gardening. Services are noon Friday in Roselawn Memorial Park Chapel of Memories, with the Rev. Jimmy Johnson officiating. Roselawn Funeral Home assisted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley.

Kenneth L. Buck

Kenneth L. Buck, 85, of Seelyville died at 1:57 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. He was a clerk with the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years and was formerly employed as a truck driver with Girton's in Brazil. He was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Clay County to Thomas L. Buck and Sylvia White Buck. Survivors include his wife of 561/2 years, Mary Butwin Buck; three daughters, Susan Buck of Crawfordsville, Mary Ellen Buck and Dorothy Buck, both of Seelyville; one son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Laura Buck of Jasper; four sisters-in-law, Anne Tribble, Helen Meunier, Dorothy Jones and Betty Butwin; one brother-in-law, George Butwin; two grandsons, Dan Buck and wife Brandi, and Joe Buck, all of Jasper; one great-granddaughter, Maci Buck; and several nieces and nephews. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, AARP, American Postal Workers Union, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Brazil American Legion Post 2 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1127 in Brazil, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He coached for many years at Terre Haute North Little League and Babe Ruth at Valle Field. He was an avid golfer and St. Louis Cardinals Fan. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Rosary Church, with the Rev. Ken Ciano officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery, with graveside military rites by American Legion Post 2 and VFW Post 1127. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with a prayer service. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Holy Rosary Church or Catholic Charities of Terre Haute.

Betty Jean Criss

Betty Jean Criss, 72, of Terre Haute died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was born Nov. 21, 193I, in Sullivan County to Gerald L. Romine and Lula M. Romine. She enjoyed reading, bowling, working outside and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband, Robert G. Criss, whom she married June 9, 1951; three daughters, Connie Miller and husband Brad of Terre Haute, Sandy Childress and husband George of Brazil, and Vickie Thomson and David Ward of Terre Haute; her six grandchildren, Kristen Childress of Stanford, Conn., Brian Miller and wife Ann of Clarendon Hills, Ill., Jason R. Childress, Darby Schimmel and husband Mark, and Zachary Thomson, all of Terre Haute, and Aaron Childress of Brazil; and her two great-granddaughters, Hayleigh Tener-Childress of Cory and Olivia Miller of Clarendon Hills. She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandson, Shane Miller; and her brother, Bill Romine. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Saturday in Roselawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will take place in Roselawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association and/or the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.
