Joseph 'Chet' Hammond

Joseph "Chet" Hammond, 86, of Terre Haute died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at his home and business, after a lengthy illness. He was owner and operator of Hammond's Garage for 56 years. He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Martinsville, Ill., to Clark Alanson "Chick" Hammond and Anna Tomlinson Hammond. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Taylor Hammond. Survivors include four sons, Joseph Hammond and wife Patty, George Hammond and wife Angie, Dale Hammond and Brad Hammond and wife Eileen; two daughters, Jennifer Kiefer and husband Jim, and Tracy LeClercq and husband Ray; three brothers, Clifford Hammond and wife Zella, Zeddie Hammond and wife Norma, and Guy Hammond and wife Carol; 16 grandchildren, Shannon LeClercq, Amy LeClercq, Emily Kiefer, Lisa Hammond, Chloe Hammond, Ava Hammond, Simon Kiefer, Aron Hammond, Brandon Hammond, Eric Lucas, Steve LeClercq, Anthony LeClercq, Brian LeClercq, Cory LeClercq, Brenton Hammond and Raymond Leclercq III; nine great-grandchildren; and special friend, Joan Turner. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert Hammond and Lloyd Hammond; and two sisters, Opal Hackney and Naomi Barney. He was a World War II veteran with the 82nd Airborne All American Army Paratrooper Glider Infantry Regiment. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star for his heroic deeds for his country. He was one of five of his original group to come back from the war. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, CCC's, and Independent Garage Owner Association. He will be remembered for his love of automobiles, master storytelling, orneriness and his love of water skiing, having learned to ski in 1957 on the Wabash River. Services are 1 p.m. Friday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bob Rousch officiating. Interment is in Mount Pleasant cemetery, with graveside military rites by VFW Post 972. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.

William J. Hayden

William J. Hayden, 77, of Terre Haute died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, in Meadows Manor East, from natural causes. He retired from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1990. He was a maintenance mechanic. He was born July 3, 1927, in Fork Union, Va., to William Hayden and Katie Cavell Hayden. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Catherine Rudd Hayden, whom he married April 16, 1969; three sons, Lester Cohen and wife Julie of Terre Haute, Trent Hart and wife Valerie of Clarksville, Tenn., and Derrick Hart of Indianapolis; four daughters, Rachael Brewer of Milwaukee, Deborah Burkins, Carolyn Crawford and Dedra Norton, all of Terre Haute; two stepsons, John Smith and Charles Bailey, both of Chicago; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Henrietta Moore Hayden, in July 1968; three sisters, Sylvia Smith, Clara Wells and Catherine Fargas; and one brother, Wesley Bates. He was an Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 340 and St. Paul Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. Services are noon Saturday in the church at 1000 S. 15th St., with the Rev. Terry Clark officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery, with graveside military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Saturday in the church. Dunn Family Mortuary assisted with arrangements.

James O. Wright

James O. Wright, 62, of Hammond, formerly of Terre Haute died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, in his residence. He was employed with the School City of Hammond as a teacher at Harding and Jefferson elementaries. He retired in 1997. Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Tana; two daughters, Tera and Lea, both of Hammond; one son, Jared of Missoula, Mont.; one brother Robert Wright and wife Pam of Terre Haute; one aunt, Barbara Pittenger of Terre Haute; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He had been a resident of the Calumet area since 1987. He was a member of Hessville Church of Christ and the Masonic Lodge in Terre Haute. He was a veteran of the Air Force, being discharged in 1968. Visitation and services are from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of Memories in Roselawn Memorial Park. Jeremy Dehut, minister of Hessville Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Bocken Funeral Home in Hammond assisted with arrangements.

Lora 'Lynn' Osborn

Lora "Lynn" Osborn, 39, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, in Union Hospital, following an extended illness. She was born June 24, 1965, in Terre Haute to John Osborn and Carolynn Larison. Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Jean Scank; one son, Todd Allan Scank; long time friend, Todd Scank; her mother; one sister, Bonnie; one brother, William; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Osborn III. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday in Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis H. Manuel officiating. Interment is in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, please, make memorial contributions to the Lora Lynn Osborn Memorial Fund, in care of Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home, to help defray funeral expenses. Lora will be remembered for her passion of life and her love of people.

Robert Edward Holston

Robert Edward Holston, 77, of Terre Haute, died at 7:20 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was an electrician with International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 481. He was born Sept. 9, 1927, in Terre Haute to Leonard Holston and Frances McCabe Holston. Survivors include four daughters, Theresa Wagle of Terre Haute, Barbara Jones of Crown Point, Lisa Hartman of Osgood and Annamaria Toner of Beech Grove; one son, Garth Holston of Indianapolis; two sisters, Helen Tonetti of San Antonio, Texas, and Rosemary Killian of Indianapolis; and 22 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Lynn Holston; one son, Robert Holston, Jr.; two sisters, Betty Belmear and Lillian Shade; and one brother, Leonard Holston. He was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and had volunteered in their soup kitchen. He also was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was an officer in the 3rd and 4th degree Knights of Columbus. He loved Indiana State University Women's basketball and was a season ticket holder. He lived at Chauncey Rose Home for Children from 1938 to 1944, worked in the dairy farm and was on the board of Chauncey Rose Memorial Committee. Mass of Christian Burial is 12:05 p.m. Tuesday in the St. Benedict Catholic Church, with Father Joel Burget and Father Bernard LaMontagne officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery, with military services by Lawton Byrum Post 972 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the U.S. Army. Visitation is 4 to 9 p.m. Monday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with rosary service at 8 p.m.

Ruth Alice James

Ruth Alice James, 79, of Terre Haute died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Clinton to Homer James and Elizabeth Brown. Survivors include one son, Mark Straw; three daughters, Marsha Guess, Pamela Olson and Rebecca Wilson; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. There are no services. Cremation is scheduled. Mattox-Wood Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Irma D. Reed

Irma D. Reed, 89, of Terre Haute died at 9:25 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born Sept. 1, 1915, in Monroe City to William Charles Williams and Ada Catherine Snyder Williams. Her husband, Charles Reed, died in 1987. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Allen and husband Charles of Terre Haute, and Rita Reed of Plainfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, William Allen and wife Julie, Kathy Fuson and husband Don, Carol Reddington and husband Bill, Michael Allen and wife Tami, and Lisa Harrison and husband Bob; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Cleo Tryon. She had been a member of the former Kerman Grotto Widows' Club. Memorial services are 3 p.m. Monday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, with the Rev. Ron Boling officiating. Following cremation, entombment will be in Roselawn Mausoleum. Visitation is 1 p.m. until services Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the charity of your choice.

Margaret S. Dowen

Margaret S. Dowen, 58, of Middletown, and formerly of West Terre Haute died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in St. Johns Hospital in Anderson. She was born June 14, 1946, in Haywood by Lanarkshire, Scotland, to Peter and Margaret Stark. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Jim Dowen; three daughters, Becky Connell and her husband Bart of Delaware, Ohio, Margaret O'Toole and her husband Ron of Marine, Ill., and Mary Hatcher and her husband Troy of DalevilIe; six grandchildren, Cameron, Dalton, Summer, Maddie, Bailey and Katie; her mother, Margaret Stark; and four sisters and one brother. She graduated from West Vigo High School in 1964. She loved animals, especially cats, dogs and birds. Graveside services are 3 p.m. Saturday in Roselawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Kyle Andrews officiating. There is no visitation. Thomas Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Charles Headlee

Charles "Chuck" Headlee, 59, of Sandford died at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday Nov. 10, 2004, in his residence. He retired from the power plant operations department with Cinergy after 32 years of service. He was born May 18, 1945, in Eglin Field, Fla., to Charles Milton Headlee and Frances Ann Gray Headlee. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Pearson Headlee, whom he married Feb. 21, 1970; two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles D. Headlee Jr. and Jennifer Headlee of Terre Haute and Christopher W. Headlee and Angela Headlee of Sheridan; a grandson, Lucas D. Headlee; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins; and his precious "kitty cat," "J.J." He was preceded in death by his parents; and an aunt and uncle who raised him, Nellie and Fred Lorey of West Terre Haute. He was a 1963 graduate of Schulte High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force in which he served as a nuclear missile guidance technician. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union Local 1393 in Terre Haute, American Legion Post 40 in Terre Haute, the AMVETS, Eagles Lodge of Terre Haute, and some special hobby clubs. He enjoyed model trains and visiting train museums. He also volunteered occasionally for community events. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Leonards Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernard Head officiating. Prayers will be 10:30 a.m. in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home with a procession to the church. Burial is in Woodlawn/St. Joe cemetery in Terre Haute, with military graveside rites by the Vigo County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., led by Sister Peggy Lynch. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to any of the following organizations: Providence Pantry/Christmas Store, Sandford Volunteer Fire Department, American Diabetes Association or Hospice of the Wabash Valley, with envelopes available in the funeral home.

Frances G. Witty

Frances G. Witty, 86, of West Terre Haute, died at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was born March 4, 1918, in Terre Haute to Perry Joab and Jessie O. Rollings Joab. Her husband, Wayne C. Witty preceded her in death on May 1, 1992. Survivors include one son, Larry Witty; two daughters, Nancy Wilguess and Ruth Ann Wilguess; one sister, Helen Misner; and nine grandchildren. Services are 2 p.m. Sunday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Moore officiating. Burial is in Bethesda cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday and before services Sunday in the funeral home.

Frances M. Wood

Frances M. Wood, 84, of Terre Haute died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in her residence. She was born July 12, 1920, in Sullivan County to Ed Hagerman and Edith Bowne Hagerman. Her husband, Raymond G. Wood, preceded her in death on April 14, 1984. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Tim Clements; two granddaughters, Sara Clements, and Ann Stuhlmacher and her husband Nathan; five nieces, Joan Grove, Sharon Taylor, Carol Edwards, Glenna Farrugia and Marilyn Elston; one nephew, Robert Wood; and two sisters-in-law, Irma Timko and Mary Jane Wood. She was a faithful member of the Aunt's MCL Dinner Club. Services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel. Burial is in Farmersburg Westlawn cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to services Saturday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children.

Robert Atkinson

MONTEZUMA - Robert Atkinson, 68, of Montezuma died at 1:27 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. He was born Nov. 22, 1935, in Clinton to Ernest Atkinson and Catherine Weir Atkinson. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Fortner Atkinson; three sons, Jeff Atkinson, Tim Atkinson and Stacy Atkinson; three sisters, Sally Asbury, Betty Maxfield and Henrietta Jo Norman; 10 grandchildren; and five step grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Brown Funeral Home, with the Revs. Jack Wilburn and Keith McIntyre officiating. Burial is in Oakland cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Bernard L. Haas Jr.

BRAZIL - Bernard L. Haas Jr., 77, of Batesville and formerly of Brazil, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, in Columbus Regional Hospital. He was born Dec. 27, 1926, in Brazil to Bernard L. Haas Sr. and Versa Kirschner Haas. His wife, Margie Haas, preceded him in death on Nov. 13, 1989. Survivors include one son, Michael Haas; two daughters, Michelle Jones and Monica Haas; two stepsons, Terry Powell and Kim Powell; two stepdaughters, Robin Schornick and Amy Ruggles; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Services were 10 a.m. Thursday in Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville, with the Rev. William Powlen officiating. Burial was in Adams Lutheran cemetery, with military rites.

Roy Hutson Jr.

BLOOMINGDALE - Roy Hutson Jr., 63, of Bloomingdale, died at 4:05 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, while being transported from Union Hospital in Terre Haute to his residence. He was a maintenance man for Anderson Green Apartments for 10 years. He was co-owner of Crowder-Hutson Feed Store in Kingman and the maintenance supervisor for Turkey Run Schools for 10 years. He also was a carpenter and farmer, and he raised German short-haired pointers. He was born Jan. 18, 1941, in Marshall, Ind., to Roy Hutson Sr. and Lula Elam Hutson. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sharon Crowder Hutson, whom he married Nov. 15, 1963; two sons, Todd Hutson and his wife Karen of Covington and Chad Hutson of Bloomingdale; one daughter, Cara Clodfelter and her husband Daniel of Marshall; three grandsons, Keivan Clodfelter, Alex Hutson and Luke Hutson; one brother, Charles Hutson of Marshall; and three sisters, Avalene Harrison of Kingman, Lela Cooper of Terre Haute and Delores Sewell of Crawfordsville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Wade Neal Hutson, on Oct. 1, 1964. He was a 1959 graduate of Turkey Run High School. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Gooch Funeral Home in Rockville, with the Rev. J. Daeschner officiating. Burial is in Poplar Grove cemetery in Marshall. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today and before services Saturday in the funeral home.

Mary Louise Kent

CLINTON - Mary Louise Kent, 77, of Clinton died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in Vermillion Convalescent Center. She was a homemaker. She was born July 22, 1927, in Lake Chelan, Wash., to Bert P. Gable and Mary Katherine Dailey Gable. Her husband, Horace Roy Kent, whom she married on March 17, 1953, preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1988. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Zell of West Lafayette and Kathy Carley of Clinton; two sons, Albert Kent of Peachtree City, Ga., and Charles Kent of Pace, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict, and was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Clinton. Prayer service is 10:45 a.m. Saturday in Karanovich-Giovanini Funeral Home, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 in Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Joseph Villa officiating. Burial is in Cashatt cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
