Mona Dees Clare

Mona Dees Clare, 87, of Terre Haute died Sunday morning, Dec. 26, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was a medical social worker, working with various local hospitals. She was born Nov. 26, 1917, in Vincennes to Dr. Harry E. Dees and Robertine Cox Dees. Her husband, Michael J. Clare, died in 1982. Survivors include one nephew, Chief Judge Hon. Harry Dees Jr. and his wife Patricia of Granger; a great-niece, Jennifer A. Dees; and a great-nephew, Robert C. Dees and his wife, Lori. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Harry Dees Sr. She was a graduate of Bicknell (Indiana) High School and received her pre-medical degree from Indiana University. Additionally, she performed graduate work at Columbia University and New York School of Social Work. She was a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church and was very active with P.E.O. Sisterhood, having been a member of Chapter BN, was a former state president and served on the National Board of Trustees for the "P.E.O. Record." She also served on the board of directors for the Department of Public Welfare, Glen Home, Visiting Nurse Association and also the Mental Health Board. She worked with the Adult and Child Guidance Clinic, started Social Work Courses at Indiana State University and later began a Social Work Program at Union Hospital. She was a life member of the I.U. Alumni Association and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of American Colonists, Swope Art Museum, Swope Alliance, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indiana Historical Society, Vigo County Historical Society and Wabash Valley Sports Car Club, where she was a winner of the Navigator Award. She was the first woman to receive the Rotary and Chamber of Commerce Good Citizen Award and also was awarded a Kentucky Colonel. She and her late husband traveled extensively throughout the world, having visited 92 countries and islands. Services are noon Thursday in Centenary United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roy Carpenter officiating. Burial is in Asbury Chapel cemetery in Bicknell. Visitation is 9:30 a.m. until services at noon Thursday, in the church. Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th st., assisted with arrangements. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of their choice.

Wayne F. Cottrell

Wayne F. Cottrell, 67, of Terre Haute died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, in Terre Haute. He was owner of solvsIT, a computer and tech support business in Cookeville, Tenn. He was born May 1, 1937, in Minorsville, Ky., to M.F. Cottrell and Melia Kate Wise Cottrell. Survivors include his mother; two daughters and two sons, including Cindy Martin of Napa, Calif.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Kent "Bo" Cottrell; and sister-in-law, Lynne of Cookeville; and his fiancee, Nancy Kellett of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by his father. His great wit and wisdom will be missed by his family and friends. Services are 11 a.m. Friday in Tucker, Yocum and Wilson Funeral Home in Georgetown, Ky., with Jim Talmage officiating. Burial will be in Stamping Ground, Ky. Pallbearers are Jackie Wise, Buzz Wise, George Cottrell, Dean House, Phil House and Al Landers. Visitation is one hour before services. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Quest Farm, 627 Glass Road, Georgetown, KY 40324.

Waynetta Davila

Waynetta Davila, 60, of Terre Haute died at 2:58 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born July 23, 1944, in Terre Haute to Wayne Payton and Edith Van Meter Payton. Survivors include her father; her husband, Eliazar Davila; three sons, Ronald Fivecoat of Douglas, Wyo., John Cunningham and Joseph Higgins, both of Bloomfield; four daughters, Rhonda Fivecoat of Casper, Wyo., Karen Cooper of Terre Haute, Amanda Higgins of Douglas, Wyo., and Heather Flores of Evansville; two brothers, Gary Payton of Terre Haute and John Payton of Boston; three sisters, Betty Wilkie of Terre Haute, Margaret Ellinger of West Terre Haute and Kathy Sullivan of New Hampshire; 23 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother. She was a member of United Christian Church and the Ministerial Association of Cleveland. Graveside services are 1 p.m. Thursday in Grandview cemetery, with the Revs. John Cunningham and Jerry Bollinger officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Walter A. 'Penee' Giles Jr.

Walter A. "Penee" Giles Jr., 78, of West Terre Haute died at 5:45 p.m. Monday, December 27, 2004 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He retired as a painter in 1993 after 44 years of service with Painters Local 197 in Terre Haute. He was born April 4, 1926, in Terre Haute to Walter A. Giles Sr. and Buela Pierce Giles. His wife, Wilma Mae Rollings Giles, whom he married Feb. 29, 1944, in Terre Haute preceded him in death Jan. 3, 2004. Survivors include three daughters. Nancy Spencer and her husband, Ed of Houston, Texas, Marcia Castillo of Pamona, Calif., and Brenda Stuck of West Terre Haute; two sons, Walter Ricky Giles and his wife, Peggy of Riverside, Calif., and Jerry L, Giles and his wife, Sandra of West Terre Haute; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII during which he received the Medal of Valor. He was a lifetime member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574 and a member of American Legion Post 501, both at West Terre Haute. Services will be 10 a.m., Friday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Leek officiating. Burial will be in Bethesda Memorial Park, with graveside military rites by V.F.W. post 6574 and American Legion Post 501. Pall bearers will be Gary Wayne Stuck Jr., Timmy Ray Stuck, Jerry Lee Giles Jr., Darin Crutchfield, Freddie Crutchfield, and Michael Joseph. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and before services Friday.

Makayla Lynn Grayless

Makayla Lynn Grayless, infant daughter of Amy Lynn Holstine Grayless and Christopher M. Grayless of Terre Haute died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, in her residence. She was born Sept. 2, 2003, in Terre Haute. Survivors include her parents; paternal grandparents. Mike and Madeline Grayless; maternal grandparents, Gary and Darlene Holstine; aunt, Jessica Grayless; uncle, Shane Holstine; paternal great-grandparents, Dollie Craft Grayless and Janice Haskett, both of Terre Haute; and Ronald Morlan of Brazil; maternal great-grandparents, Edward and Mary Holstine and Lawrence and Betty Benefiel; and maternal great-great-grandmother, Alice Miller of Terre Haute. In her brief life, she touched many and brought great joy to all. She will be greatly missed. Services are 10 a.m. Friday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Fagg officiating. Burial is in Bethesda cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Makayla Lynn Grayless Benefit Fund, in care of Terre Haute First.

Lester M. Mason

Dr. Lester M. Mason, 89, of Terre Haute died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was a retired dermatologist. He was born in Boone County, W.Va., October 4, 1915, to Millard Mason and Henrietta Basham Mason. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Kelly Mason of Terre Haute, a son, Lester M. Mason, Jr., of Bloomington, Ind., a granddaughter, Emily Kathleen Mason; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Everette Mason, Clarence Mason and Seybert Mason. He attained his medical degree in 1941 from the Medical College of Virginia and was a member of A.K.K. Medical Fraternity. He served his residency in dermatology at Cincinnati General Hospital, 1945-1948 and began his Terre Haute practice in 1948. He was a member of the American Medical Association; a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology; the Indiana State Medical Association; the Indiana State Dermatology Association; a past president of the Terre Haute Academy of Medicine and the Vigo County Medical Association; an Aesculapian Society member, and served on the staff at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. Dr. Mason also was a captain in the Army Medical Corps during World War II and was a member of Central Christian Church in Terre Haute. He was an avid fisherman and loved to tend his garden and plant trees in his yard. Private family funeral services and visitation will be Friday, Dec. 31, 2004. Burial will be in Highland Lawn cemetery. Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th St. assisted with funeral arrangements.

LeRoy 'Bugsy' Boatman Jr.

UNIVERSAL - LeRoy "Bugsy" Boatman Jr., 42, of Universal died Monday afternoon, Dec. 27, 2004, in West Central Community Hospital's emergency room. He was born Jan. 5, 1962, in Clinton to LeRoy Boatman and Mary Pritchard Boatman. Survivors include his son, Nicholas Boatman of Universal; his mother of Universal; three sisters, Becky Brockmeier of Rockville, Lela Renee Jones and Cindy K. Searing, both of Universal; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Robert Boatman. There are no services or visitation. Cremation is scheduled. Frist Funeral Home in Clinton assisted with arrangements.

Norma M. Carlson

CLINTON - Norma M. Carlson, 81, of Clinton died at 10:35 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, in Vermillion Convalescent Center. She was a cook for the Clinton Nursing Home before her retirement. She was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Clinton to Alfred Nolan and Nellie Creasey Nolan. Her husband, George Carlson, died March 6, 1983. Survivors include one daughter, Marlene Carlson of Clinton; daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis and Larry Cobble of New Goshen and Joyce and Dallas Godbey of Clinton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Julia Carlson and Gerry and Myra Carlson, all of Clinton; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Baker and Edna Judy McDonald, all of Clinton; and three special friends, Sparkie, BiIly and Yeti. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, J.R. Nolan, Nov. 24, 2004; a grandson, Jonathan Cobble, Dec. 22, 2004; and a granddaughter, Holly Ann. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday in Walnut Grove Chapel, with the Rev. Larry Snyder officiating. Burial is in Walnut Grove cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Thursday. Frist Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Kathleen J. Setzer

SULLIVAN - Kathleen J. Setzer, 88, of Sullivan died at 11:25 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 3004, in Sullivan County Community Hospital. She was a retired nurse at Mary Sherman Hospital. She was born Jan. 22, 1916, in Wentzville, Mo., to Charles Stadtman and Clara Koelling Stadtman. Survivors include one son, Theodore J. Setzer of Brookston; two daughters, Martha J. Bradbury and Jane A. Walls, both of Sullivan; two sisters, Elizabeth Shockey of Iowa City, Iowa and Clara Mae Kerley of Hilton Head, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Charles Stadtman; one sister, Melba Haines; and one granddaughter, Deborah Shaheen. She was a member of First Christian Church and was a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 188. Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Banks & Brust Funeral Home, with the Rev. David Cox officiating. Burial is in Center Ridge cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Don R. Clark Sr.

HIGHLAND - Don R. Clark Sr., 73, of Highland died at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in Riley Hospice Home in Munster. He was a retired engineer with the IHB Railroad. He was born Dec. 23, 1931, in Franklin Park, Ill. His wife, Ermagene, preceded him in death, Dec. 23, 2000. Surviving are three loving children, Don R. Clark Jr. and his wife, Christina of Demotte, Sara Clark of Highland and Keith A. Clark Sr., and his wife, Brenda of Terre Haute; five grandchildren, Michael, Michelle and her fianc/, Brian Stump, Heather, Amanda and Keith Jr.; one great-grandson, Nathan; two brothers, Harley Clark Jr. and his wife, Joan and Robert Clark and his wife, Clara; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Calvary Baptist Church in Highland, a charter member of Suburban Bible Church, and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. Services are 11 a.m. CST Thursday in Calvary Baptist Church in Highland, with the Rev. Daniel Obinger officiating. Burial is in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville. Visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today in Anthony & Dziadowicz Funeral Home in Munster.

Frederick D. Edwards Sr.

Frederick D. "Fred" Edwards Sr., 72, of West Terre Haute died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in his residence. After serving in the Marines, he was a service technician for IBM, retiring in 1987. He was born Jan. 22, 1932, in Tecumseh, to Logan G. Edwards and Hazel Evans Edwards. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Theresa Edwards, on April 16, 2001. Survivors include his mother; two sons Frederick D. Edwards Jr. and Chris L. Edwards and his wife, Pam A. Edwards, all of Terre Haute; one daughter, Theresa M. Kile and her husband, Michael A. of Brownsburg; two sisters, Cheryl Webster and her husband, Mike of New Goshen, and Janice Wheat and her husband, Tom of Shepardsville; two brothers, Gene Edwards and his wife, Lou of Marshall, Ill., and Bob Edwards and his wife, Helen of rural Illinois; grandchildren, Samantha J. Edwards, Danielle N. Kile, Emily C. Edwards, Chels/ M. Kile, Zachary L. Edwards and Caitlin Cooper; step grandchildren, Bethany Kile and Justin Kile; and many nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Edsley G. Edwards. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of Post 501 American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6574. He was an avid fisherman and will be remembered as a person living life to its fullest. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in Valley Funeral Home in West Terre Haute. Visitation is 11 a.m. until services Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 6574, with envelopes available at the funeral home. Mattox Funeral Homes assisted with arrangements.

Grace Cleo Marie Fairchild

Grace Cleo Marie Fairchild, 100, of Terre Haute died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004, in Meadows Manor Convalescent Center East. She was a homemaker. She was born Aug. 29, 1904, in Kramer to Joseph E. McFadden and Anna Mae Calton McFadden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Weldon H. Fairchild, who died July 27, 1985; and 10 brothers and sisters. Survivors include two sons, Charles Edward Fairchild of Owasso, Okla., and James W. Fairchild and his spouse Judy of Indianapolis; two daughters, Charlotte Marie Hillbrant of Terre Haute and Eleanor Mae Fairchild of Indianapolis; one brother, Joe McFadden of Danville, Ill.,; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with the Rev. Marcia Carpenter officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 1 p.m. until services Wednesday.

Eva Alberta Schott Smith Heck

Eva Alberta Schott Smith Heck, 86, of Terre Haute died at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 25, 2004, in Union Hospital. She was a homemaker. She was born Nov. 14, 1918, in Terre Haute to Charles Schott and Agnes Galloway Schott. Her first husband, Wendell Smith, died in 1973; her second husband, Paul Heck, died in 1986. Survivors include one son, David E. Smith Sr. and his wife Mary Jane; two daughters, Nancy Bice and her husband Sam, and Marianne Hale; one brother, Charles "Bud" Schott; two sisters, Dorothy Hollingsed and Sally Morris; grandchildren, William W. Smith, James Lockard, Anita Lockard Moore, Carol Jean Rossicoe and David E. Smith Jr.; great-grandchildren, Stephanie Moore, Christopher Moore, Michael Moore, Justin Lockard and Heather McCullough; great-great-grandchildren, Megan Moore and Zachary Moore; and one great-great-great-grandchild, Maddie McCullough. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Gertrude Dunbar; and one grandson, Larry Lockard. She was a member of Wabash Valley Senior Citizens and the former Dean Avenue Christian Church. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel, with the Rev. Don Tichenor officiating. Burial is in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today.
