Ray L. Brazzell

Ray L. Brazzell, 73, of rural West Terre Haute died at 3:10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in his residence. He retired from General Telephone and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 727 of Terre Haute after 29 years of service. He was born Aug. 20, 1931, in Los Angeles to Harold L. Brazzell and Olga Hults Brazzell. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Frances Lucas Reagin Brazzell, whom he married July 22, 1948, in Terre Haute; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Mike Miedema of Hockley, Texas, Kathy and Bob Roush and Raynel and Larry McLaren, all of West Terre Haute; five sons, Steve Brazzell and his wife Janet of Sheridan, Doug Brazzell and his wife Paula of Ardmore, Okla., Brad Brazzell and his wife Debi of Houston, Craig Brazzell of Arlington, Texas, and Keith Brazzell and his wife Roxanne of Decatur, Ill.; one sister, Marjorie Lewis of Worthington, Ohio; one brother and sister-in-law, Max and Mary Brazzell of Springfield, Ohio; 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister-in-law, Juanita Brazzell. He was a born-again Christian and he enjoyed and was devoted to spending time reading the Bible. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed times with his family. He also was an avid outdoorsman, loved to garden and loved landscaping and developing land operating a bulldozer and excavating equipment. He built several lakes and ponds in the area. He had the ability to visualize the finished product and do the work accordingly. Services are 10 a.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home, with Earl Rodgers officiating. Burial is in Oak Hill cemetery in Riley. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today and before services Friday.

Lois B. Rollins Burks

Lois B. Rollins Burks, 79, of Terre Haute and formerly of Hammond died at 8:12 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in Union Hospital. She retired in 1996 as a food service worker for Maywood Elementary School in Hammond with more than 20 years of service. She was born Dec. 15, 1925, in Mount Vernon, Ill., to Eugene Rollins and Gretta Barnhill Rollins. Her husband, Neddie Burks, preceded her in death in 1997. Survivors include five sons, Robert Eugene Rollins, Mel Burks and his wife Kathryn, and Rick Burks, all of Terre Haute, Sylvester Hill of Gary and Loyd Burks and his wife Karen of Mount Vernon; four daughters, Anita Burks, Alemetra D. Burks, Wanda Jean Dorsey and Rochelle Rollins, all of Terre Haute; three sisters, Jewell Alexander of Hammond, Jane Willhite of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Jean A. Burton of Benton Harbor, Mich.; 66 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Neddie L. Burks. She was a former member of St John A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served for the Willing Workers Society of Hammond. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Saints Home Church of God in Christ, with the Rev. Orvill Sanders officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Dunn Family Mortuary.

James Ray Higginbotham

James Ray Higginbotham, 67, of Hammond and formerly of Terre Haute died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Hopkinsville, Ky. He owned and operated Lake County Window Cleaning Co. of Hammond for 27 of the 75 years the business has existed. Survivors include his wife, Velma; father, Virgil Ray Higginbotham; three children, Rhonni Fohr and her husband Greg, Tam Coveleskie and her husband Frank, and Rick Higginbotham and his wife Angie; two stepsons, Jimmy and Danny Foster; seven brothers, Jerry, Kenny, Tom, Ed, Terry, Teddy and Byron Higginbotham; two sisters, Geneva Boles and Kathy Heffler; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Gulley; and an infant son, James Jr. Visitation is 2 to 6 p.m. Friday in LaHayne Funeral Home in Hammond. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Alma Annette Pipkins Jenkins

Alma Annette Pipkins Jenkins, 33, of Terre Haute died at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in her residence, of cancer. She was born Jan. 12, 1971, in Lucedale, Miss., to Jerry Pipkins and Willie Van De Kamp Pipkins. Survivors include her husband, Donald Scott Jenkins; her parents; two brothers, Chris Pipkins and his wife Stacy, and William Pipkins and his wife Belinda; and two beautiful nieces, Katie and Cassie. She was a student at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, in the Women's External Degree Program; Life Support Group; Camp Bluebird Program. Services are 7:30 p.m. Friday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with Tom Morgan officiating. Cremation is scheduled. Visitation is 4 p.m. to services Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Wabash Valley.

Sheri L. Leslie

Sheri L. Leslie, 44, of Terre Haute and formerly of Seelyville, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in her residence, after fighting multiple sclerosis for many years. She was a beautician for many years and was a homemaker. She was born June 20, 1960, in Vermillion County to Robert Benson and Linda Chopson Benson. Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Leslie; her parents of Seelyville; one son, Broc A. Leslie and his fiancee Rachel Utt of Terre Haute; one daughter and her husband, Cari N. and Don Oakes of Terre Haute; her twin sister, Terri Hoffman of Staunton; sister, Kimmala Sanders of Brazil; one brother, Rocky Benson of Seelyville; one granddaughter, Haley Rae Oakes; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Pete Benson. She was a member of Brazil Moose Lodge 780 and the Brazil Eagles Lodge. Most importantly, she was a great homemaker, mother and grandmother. Services are 1 p.m. Friday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Rick Swan officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, National Headquarters, Donations, 6350 N. Andrews Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33309.

Shirley Georgianna Martin

Shirley Georgianna Martin, 68, of Terre Haute died at 9:06 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Union Hospital. She was retired from Aramark. She was born Nov. 18, 1936, in Terre Haute to Clarence Otho Fields and Effie May Lemmons Fields. Her husband, Joseph Earl Martin, preceded her in death in 1977. Survivors include three sons, Jerry Schell and his wife Tammy, Danny Schell and Stacy Schell, all of Terre Haute; two daughters, Marsha Slavens and her husband Earl, and Suzanne Closson and her husband Wayne, all of Terre Haute; one brother, Fred Fields; three sisters, Frances Houdeshell of Michigan, Rosemary Sloniker of Terre Haute and Virginia Hartley of Hamlet; 11 grandchildren, J.R. Slavens, Michelle Cates, Ricky Schell, Brandy Schell, Jennifer Schell, Jeremy Schell, Julie Schell, Amanda Schell, Joseph Schell, Chelsie Schell and Amber Closson; and several great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Rick Schell, in 1996; and one daughter, Patricia Schell, in 1957. Services are 11 a.m. today in DeBaun Idaho Street Chapel. Burial is in Hull cemetery. Visitation is 9 a.m. to services.

Julie A. Shields

Julie A. Shields, 35, of Terre Haute died at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, in Union Hospital, after a brief battle with cancer. She was an office assistant with Dr. Daniel Keller's office and worked for Hampton Lawn Care. She also was employed by Digital Audio Disc Corp., A.E.T., and was a driver for United Parcel Service. She also was a former patrol officer with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Piqua, Ohio post. She was born March 31, 1969, in Greencastle to Keith G. Dorsett and Betty Shaw Dorsett. Survivors include her husband of four years, Michael L. Shields of Terre Haute; her parents of Bruceville; one sister, Carrie Harris and her husband Kevin of Fort Campbell, Ky.; and one brother, Keith E. Dorsett of Ashley, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Robert P. Shaw and paternal grandfather and grandmother, Eugene Dorsett and Blanche Huller Dorsett. She was a 1987 graduate of North Knox High School and a 1989 graduate of Vincennes University. She served in the 181st Fighter Wing of the Terre Haute Air National Guard. She loved to travel, spend time with friends and family and quilting. A remembrance reception is later. Cremation has been scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Mattox-Ryan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Calvin J. Stultz

Calvin J. Stultz, 81, of Terre Haute died Monday evening in Union Hospital. He was born March 12, 1923, in Sullivan to Calvin E. Stultz and Edith Pearl Gordon Stultz. Survivors include two sons, David Stultz of Vincennes and Darin Stultz and his wife Elizabeth of Terre Haute; two granddaughters, Cindy Lynn Edenhofer and her husband Jason of Salamanca, N.Y., and Heather Michelle Stultz of Indianapolis; two brothers, Bob Stultz and his wife Cristine of Merom and Jerry Stultz and his wife Carolyn of Sullivan; two sisters, Martha Moody of Indianapolis and Norma Wieringa of Crete, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John Stultz; and one sister, Helen Stultz. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972, a lifetime member of VFW and a member of the American Legion. He also was a member of International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen and Helpers of America Local 144 and Maplewood Christian Church. He was an avid fisherman and gardener. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Roselawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Craig Wininger officiating. Entombment is in Roselawn Memorial Park, with VFW Post 972 conducting military rites. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Louise M. Wells

Louise M. Wells, 92, of Terre Haute died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, in Meadows Manor North. She was retired from the Foster Grandparent Program and also had worked 17 years in St. Anthony Hospital. She was born Aug. 29, 1912, in Terre Haute. Her husband, Milton M. Wells, whom she married Nov. 10, 1951, preceded her in death in 1987. Survivors include two stepsons, Lucius Wells and his wife Vivian of Terre Haute and Robert L. Wells of Sycamore, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Helen Taylor and her husband Robert of Galesburg, Ill.; one stepbrother, David Nicholas Smith Sr. of Terre Haute; one stepsister, Elizabeth Dowdy of Greensboro, N.C.; nephews, Alexander Farrell Jr. of Saginaw, Mich., and Richard Farrell of Aurora, Colo.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ricka McDougal Smith; one sister, Anna Alice; one brother, Alexander Farrell; two stepbrothers, Joseph E. Smith and George Lemuel Smith; and two stepsons, Joseph Wells and William Wells. She was a member of Israel of God's Church. Services are 1 p.m. Saturday in Israel of God's Church, with the Rev. James T. Ewing officiating. Burial is in Grandview cemetery. Visitation is 11 a.m. to services. Russell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary M. Jarrett

SULLIVAN - Mary M. Jarrett, 94, of Sullivan died at 12:06 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, in Miller's Merry Manor. She was a teacher. She was born Sept. 11, 1910, in Riley to Frank Jeffers and Josie Kester Jeffers. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Harry Jarrett. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, David and Rita Jarrett of Auburndale, Fla.; one daughter, Judy Jarrett of Terre Haute; one sister, Evelyn Slover of Linton; two granddaughters, Amy Jarrett Ahlfeld and husband Steve of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jo Ellen Jarrett Zippin and husband Stan of Wellington, Fla.; and two grandsons, Mark Zippin and Brad Zippin. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Madeline Wagoner and Virginia Wright; and three brothers, Rudy Jeffers, Jim Jeffers and Glenn Jeffers. She graduated from Indiana State Teachers' College in 1934, and as an alumna she was a member of the Grand Society of Sycamores. She taught school in Cory before coming to Sullivan County and teaching at Merom, New Lebanon, Gill Township and Carlisle before retiring in 1972, and becoming everybody's grandmother. She was a member of Sullivan First Christian Church. Memorial services are 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Banks & Brust Funeral Home, with the Revs. Gene Jeffers and David Cox officiating. Graveside services are in Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute. Visitation is 1 p.m. to services. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Jim Brown, Kathryn Burnett, Harry Jarrett Choir Scholarship Fund or to the Sullivan Art Guild.

Danny R. Payne

LINTON - Danny R. Payne, 65, of Linton died at 4:06 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in Greene County General Hospital. He was employed by Bloomfield Manufacturing. He was born May 21, 1939, in Sullivan County to Wilbur Payne and Fredia Houldson Payne. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn J. Goodman Payne of Linton; two sons, Michael Payne of Coalmont and Terry Payne of Texas; one stepson, Sam R. Goodman of Linton; one daughter, Lisa Garcia of Lyons; one sister, Dianna Hildreth of Claypool, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Newkirk's Funeral home in Dugger, with the Rev. Doug Cassel officiating. Burial is in Mount Moriah cemetery near Dugger. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.

James Gary Smith

SULLIVAN - James Gary Smith, 61, of Vincennes, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, in Punta Gorda, Fla. He was retired from Wabash Human Services, where he served as director for 29 years. He served in state government under Lt. Gov. Bob Rock and he was past editor of the Sullivan Daily Times. He was born Oct. 9, 1943, in Beaumont, Texas, to James Harvey Smith and Ernestine Drake Smith. Survivors include his stepmother, Margaret Smith of Paoli; one sister, Sharon Like and her husband Keith of Wheatland; nephews, Steven Like and his wife Mary of Elkhart, Jeffrey Like and his wife Renita of Mechanicsville, Va., and Lance Like and his wife Karen of Bloomington; one niece, Lisa Like and her husband Brian Pagano of Deer Park, Ill., nine grandnieces; and nine grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He served in the U.S. Army and was past president of the Young Democrat Association. He was twice presented with a Sagamore of the Wabash. Private graveside services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Center Ridge cemetery, with the Rev. Timothy Fleace officiating. There is no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wabash Human Services of Vincennes or to Wheatland Methodist Church. Banks & Brust Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alyson Effner

Alyson Effner, 63, of Terre Haute died at 11:10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was employed by Terre Haute Medical Lab. She was born Oct. 30, 1941, in Rising Star, Texas, to Orville Crownover and Luvica S. Bose. Survivors incliude four daughters, Jamie Rodeghiero, Kim Effner, Elaine Lewis and Amy Cribelar and her husband Dan of Martinsville, Ill.; two sisters, Jo Beth Stoll and her husband Gary, and Pat Holler and her husband Harry; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Cofressi, Kyle Shannon, Brock Oeffler, Brittany Oeffler, Jordan Effner, Chelsea Lewis, Noah Cribelar and Morgan Cribelar; seven great-grandchildren; and many beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 290 of Rosedale, and a life member of Marine Corps League Joseph Bray. Services are 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Mattox-Wood Funeral Home, with Tom Morgan officiating. Cremation is scheduled. Visitation is 4 p.m. until services Thursday.The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Project Playground, Martinsville Elementary, P.O. Box 396, Martinsville, Ill. 62442.
