Sylvia Flora Ames

BRAZIL - Sylvia Flora Ames, 101, of Brazil died at 12:22 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, in her residence. She was born July 5, 1903, in Bridgeton to Ona Otis Campbell and Minnie Mae Lowe Campbell. She was the oldest of eight children. She had worked in the cigar factory, the Libby canning factory and the Vigo Ordinance plant in Terre Haute during World War II. She also sold Avon, and retired from housekeeping at Indiana State University in 1976. Her husband, Samuel Everett Ames, preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1976. She is survived by her children, Virgil Ames and his wife Loretta, Mildred Frazier, Norma Pell and her husband Glen; 16 grandchildren; one step grandchild; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles M. Campbell and Esmond Campbell; and other extended family. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son in infancy, Jerry Leon Ames; four sisters; one brother; a son-in-law, Irvin Frazier; and three great-grandsons. She attended high school in Bridgeton. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, a 50-year member of the Eagles Lodge and a Moose Lodge charter member. She also was a member of the Baptist Church in Bridgeton and had recently attended the North Meridian Street Church of Christ. Services are 11 a.m. Monday in French Funeral Home, with Mitch Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn cemetery in Terre Haute. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and again Monday before services in the funeral home.

Sam M. Conner

CLOVERDALE - Sam M. Conner, 69, of Cloverdale died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, in St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a retired bankruptcy court clerk for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District in Terre Haute. He also was a former Putnam County clerk and district federal court clerk. He was born April 28, 1935, in McKinney, Texas, to Moss Fulton Conner and Velma R. Robinson Conner. Survivors include his wife, Elaine Gobel Conner, whom he married April 28, 1956; one son, Tim Conner; one sister, Darcus Jean Littrell; one brother, Pat Conner; and two grandsons, Brent and Dale Conner. He was a member of Cloverdale Masonic Lodge 132 Free and Accepted Masons, and Ducks Unlimited. Services and visitation are private. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Hospice, 2142 W. 86th St., Indianapolis, IN 46260. Whitaker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Grace Lillian Buck Heller

BLOOMFIELD - Grace Lillian Buck Heller, 94, of Bloomfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in the Hospitality House in Bloomington. She was a teacher. She was born July 25, 1910, in Keokuk, Iowa, the second child of Stephen Decatur Buck and Isadora Longshore Buck. She and her mother toured Washington, D.C., in 1926 after winning several contests with her speech titled "Prohibition, the Proof of its Progress." She attended junior college in Macomb, Ill., and taught grades five through eight when she was 18 in a one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago when she was 46 with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She then taught elementary school for 21 years in Franklin Park, Ill. She was a writer of poetry, and could recite at will many poems she had written throughout her lifetime, or just loved because they touched her fancy. She retired in 1977 and moved to Bloomfield, where she was a volunteer in Carnegie Library. She had resided in the Hospitality House for the last four years. She was preceded in death by her three husbands, Herbert Wall, Howard Dina of Linton and Irving Heller of Michigan. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Steven Decatur Buck of Bedford, Earnest Buck of Ventura, Calif., and Danial Buck of Keokuk; and two sisters, Dorthea Hollingsworth of Dallas and Frances Teeling of Lafayette. Survivors include one son, Herbert Buck Wall of Fountain Valley, Calif; two daughters, Dorene Lillian Madden of Ramer, Ala., and Sammye Dina Smith of Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The family extends thanks to Hospitality House and their caring and thoughtful staff. There are no services or visitation. Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield assisted with arrangements.

Elden Doyle 'Shot Gun' Alsman

OAKTOWN - Elden Doyle "Shot Gun" Alsman, 71, of Oaktown, died peacefully with his family at his bedside at 8:35 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes after a long battle with cancer. He retired from I.U.O.E. Local 841A. He was a Busseron Township trustee for 12 years. He drove an extracurricular school bus for North Knox School Corp. and most recently worked at Melon Acres. He was born Sept. 29, 1933, in Oaktown to Jesse Alsman and Hazel Jeffers Alsman. Survivors include his wife, Donna Killion Alsman of Oaktown, whom he married March 18, 1961; three children and their spouses, Jacky and Julie Alsman of Bruceville, Nancy and Bruce Aukerman of Clinton and Steven and Jill Alsman of Bruceville; six grandchildren, Jessica and Jake Alsman, Hailey and Emily Aukerman and Sydney and Jacqueline Alsman; one step grandson, Justin Robbins; and his faithful pet, Kandee Jo. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gary Alsman and Blaine Alsman; and one sister, Nancy Alsman VanBuren. He served in the Korean conflict. He was a member of American Legion Post 0073, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1157. Memorial services are 2 p.m. Sunday in Oaktown Christian Church. McClure-Utt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Daniel Chironna

WEST BRIGHTON, N.Y. - Daniel Chironna, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005. He was born Nov. 14, 1934, in Staten Island, N.Y. to John Chironna Sr. and Teresa Chironna. His wife, Jeanny Chironna, preceded him in death. He is survived by his companion, Gloria Chiarello; four children, Daniel Chironna, Cathy Chironna, Michael Chironna and Jill Smieya; four brothers, Michael Chironna, Louis Chironna and Val Chironna, all of Staten Island, and Dr. John Chironna Jr. and his wife Mildred of Terre Haute; five grandchildren, Angelo, Danielle, Taylor, Gianna and Luke; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Frank Chironna. He was employed as a contractor during his life and was a veteran of the Korean War. Funeral services are 9 a.m. today in Olivet Presbyterian Church in West Brighton, with the Rev. Lee McCallum officiating. Entombment is in Moravian cemetery in Staten Island. Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., assisted locally.

Florence Genieve Campbell

Florence Genieve Campbell, 88, of Terre Haute died early Thursday morning in Union Hospital. She was born April 8, 1916, in Terre Haute to Clyde Truitt and Clara McKinney Truitt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd E. Campbell. Survivors include one granddaughter, Iantha Horning and her husband Bryan of Terre Haute; and two great-grandchildren, Billy Horning and Bryanna Horning, both of Terre Haute. She also was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Vercie Elkins Osborne; and one brother, Carl Truitt. She was a member of the Red Hat Society of Royal Oaks Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was a wonderful grandmother. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Roselawn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Charlotte Hay officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is 12:30 p.m. to services Saturday in the funeral home.

Connie Jo Collins

Connie Jo Collins, 47, of West Terre Haute died at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 12, 2005, in her residence. She was employed by St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, where she worked in the business office. She was born Jan. 20, 1957, in Terre Haute to Donald R. Graham and Martyne Kuhn Graham. Her husband, Larry Collins, whom she married Nov. 15, 1975, in West Terre Haute preceded her in death Jan. 21, 1995. Survivors include two daughters, Misti Corrigan and her husband Joseph of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Brandi Collins of West Terre Haute; one son, Donald Collins of West Terre Haute; her parents of West Terre Haute; her grandmother, Ruth Graham of West Terre Haute; a sister and brother-in-law, Sallee and Brent Goodwin of West Terre Haute; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenn and Tina Graham of West Terre Haute; one grandson, Patrick Corrigan; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First Church Of The Nazarene of Terre Haute and the West Vigo- New Goshen Lions Club and the West Vigo High School Class of 1975 reunion committee. She had been very involved with the St. Mary-of-the-Woods College community. Services are 10 a.m. Monday in the First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Mark Fleschner officiating. Burial is in Dunlap cemetery. Visitation is 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Fitzpatrick-Pearce Funeral Home and one hour before services Monday in the church. The family suggests that if friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to a memorial fund in her name for a college fund for her children, with envelopes available in the funeral home.

Robert Charles Forbes

Robert "Bob" Charles Forbes, 76, of Terre Haute died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, in Meadows Manor East. He was a retired vice president of Moore-Langen Printing Co. and a well-known sportscaster for WTHI-TV and WWVR Radio. He was born Oct. 18, 1928, in Terre Haute to Charles John Forbes and Irene Marguerite Albin Forbes. He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Forbes of Terre Haute; two sons, Randall Clayton Forbes and his wife Karen of Orange County, Calif., and Kevin Hurst Forbes and his fiancee' Ruthie R. Culbertson of Cloverdale; one daughter, Leslie Ann Marguerite Almack and her husband Tim of Noblesville; five grandchildren, R.J. Forbes, Jacquelyn Joanne Forbes, Benjamin Randall Almack, Isaac Earl Almack and Nathan Timothy Almack; and four step grandchildren, Jennifer Conine, Steven Conine, Christopher Connolly and Kellie Connolly. He was an avid sports fan and was involved in area youth baseball organizations. He was the "voice" of the Indiana State University Sycamores during 1970-1980. For many years, he was an announcer with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. He started work at Moore-Langen Printing Co. in 1953 and retired as the vice president of sales. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Sunday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., with Mike McCormick and the Rev. Norm Hanson officiating. Visitation is noon to services Sunday. If friends so desire, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Raymond A. Marra

Raymond A. Marra, 85, of Terre Haute died at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in Union Hospital. He was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Terre Haute, the youngest of four children to Peter Joseph Marra and Lucretia Degosso Marra. His family came from northern Italy and his was the first generation to be born in the United States. Survivors include a family friend, Cheryl Cunningham of Terre Haute. He was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Marra; and one brother, Edward Marra. He attended St. Ann's School and graduated from Gerstmeyer High School. He was a member of St. Benedict Church and was strong in the Catholic faith. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Saturday in Callahan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with the Rev. Joseph Villa officiating. Burial is in Calvary cemetery. Visitation is 10 a.m. to services Saturday in the funeral home.

Geraldine G. McLin

Geraldine G. McLin, 97, of Terre Haute died at 5:49 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in Union Hospital. She was born Oct. 5, 1907, in Vigo County to Charles Critchlow and Mable Ray Critchlow. Her husband, Clarence McLin preceded her in death in 1975. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Dolores Michael of South Bend, Rex and Judy Critchlow of Terre Haute, Richard and Helen Critchlow of Niles, Mich., Jim and Cathy Critchlow of Tucson, Ariz., Robert and Ruth Critchlow of Lansing, Mich., Jack and Betty Critchlow of Shelbyville and Jane Ann and Harold Derr of Cumming, Ga.; three cousins, Alma Jane Cull of Florida, Betty Jane Sall of Illinois and Ginger Thomas of Michigan; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She also was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Sidney Ray Critchlow, Rex M. Critchlow and Loran Critchlow; and two sisters, Ruby Critchlow and Ella Mae Critchlow. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in Highland Lawn Chapel, with the Rev. Abe Miller officiating. Burial follows in Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation is 1 p.m. to services Saturday in the chapel. DeBaun Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
