Sister Pauline Heineck
Born into this world on Nov. 9, 1913; departed for Heaven on July 10, 2008.
Sister Pauline Heineck died peacefully and with great hope at the age of 94 on Thursday, July 10, 2008 in Camilla Hall at St. Joseph Center in Tipton.
In her final hours, as in her many years of retirement, she was embraced by her sisters who loved her dearly. Prayers on her behalf were constant.
Frances Margaret Mary Heineck was born Nov. 9, 1913 to Walter and Charlotte Joanna (Sheehan) Heineck in Hillsboro, Ore. Her only brother, Paul, preceded her in death as did her parents.
At the young age of 15 years, Frances Margaret left the mountains of Oregon for Tipton, where she attended St. Joseph Academy, and eventually entered the community July 9, 1930, making her first vows July 2, 1933. Sister Pauline gave her heart and soul to serving God and the church for the next 78 years.
Sister Pauline earned a bachelor of education from St. Mary’s Notre Dame and completed a masters degree at Indiana State University. She taught in parish schools throughout the state, including Kokomo, Noblesville, Elwood, Portland, Marion, Kentland and Wabash. She was one of the very first sisters to teach at Our Lady of Grace in Noblesville, where she also served as principal.
In addition to her Indiana service to children through her teaching, Sister Pauline served in Appalachia for several years, working with teenagers, sharecroppers and coal miners. After earning a CPE at Indiana University Medical Center, she served as chaplain in oncology at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Neb. for five years. Sister Pauline also served at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood before returning to St. Joseph Center to work with the summer migrant program and to be of service at the motherhouse in providing transportation and assistance to her sisters.
Sister Pauline lived a life of love and joy – offering a smile and laugh to everyone she met in her daily trips through the halls of St. Joseph Center. When asked, “How are you today?” the response was always a very cheerful, “I’m wunerful!” – nothing about her pain, nothing about her problems, just a simple affirmation of a state of being. Her sense of humor was never absent, bringing laughter to anyone who took a minute to talk with her. There is no doubt this one single life changed the world around her. Her students remained devoted to her and many have said their lives were better because of her deep care and concern for their personal welfare.
While she never went back to serve fulltime in those beautiful Cascade Mountains she loved, her heart never left their profound beauty – they were always in her mind’s eye.
As her final act, Sister Pauline offered her body for scientific research.
There will be a memorial mass celebrated by Monsignor John Duncan at St. Joseph Center in Tipton at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
