Barbara A. Smith
Barbara A. Smith, 68, Elwood, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at her residence in Elwood after a brief illness.
She was born June 9, 1940 in Lincoln County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Silas Cox and the late Madge (Rich) Cox.
She married Larry “Rex” Smith Oct. 12, 1969.
She retired from National Power Flow in Elwood and was a member of the Curtisville Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband, Larry “Rex” Smith of Elwood; two daughters, Kathy and husband, Joe Miller of Elwood and Cindy Lovell of Elwood; three sons, Doug and wife, Jennifer Mason of Elwood, Darren Smith of Elwood and Eric Smith of Elwood; one brother, William “Bill” Cox of Elwood; two sisters, Christine Hosier of Alexandria and Betty Huff of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Jennifer Oldham of Elwood, Penny Garner of Alexandria, Darren Miller of Anderson, Corie Lovell of Elwood, Heather Lovell of Elwood, Amy Nicole Smith, Christopher Smith, Jason Smith, Lane Smith, Travis Smith, Tyler Smith, and Taylor Smith, all of Elwood; Taylor Trobaugh of Kokomo, Erica Mason of Indiana-polis, Tanner Mason of Kokomo, and Whitney Hainline of Elwood; ten great-grandchildren and expecting one more great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Snapp of the Curtisville Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society.

William Q. Frazier
William Q. “Bill” Frazier, 89, of Elwood, died Sept. 1, 2008 at St.Vincent Mercy Hospital after an extended illness.
He was born April 22, 1919 in Elwood.
He was a 1937 graduate of Elwood High School and also attended Butler University.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II.
He worked for Sirwicket Men’s Shop in Orange, Calif. before retiring in 1990 after 15 years of service where he was a sales manager.
He was a member of the East Main Street Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn L. (Cook) Frazier, whom he married Nov. 22, 1961; three sons, Stephen R. Frazier, Jerry and wife, Rosemary Haines of Ossian and Tommy J. and wife, Nancy Haines of Sun City Center, Fla.; a daughter, Sheila A. Frazier; a sister-in-law, Ellen Frazier of Elwood; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester M. and Edith M. (John) Frazier; a brother, John “Jack” Frazier; and a half sister, Jean Higgenbotham.
Following cremation, graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at the Elwood City Cemetery, with the Rev. Roger Gardner of the East Main Street Christian Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the East Main Street Christian Church Building Fund through the funeral home.
Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Maurice J. Pierce
ALEXANDRIA – Maurice J. “Maury” Pierce, 79, Alexandria, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, at his residence after an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 4, 1929 in Richland Township, the son of Herman and Charlotte (Ferguson) Pierce.
He had resided in the Alexandria area since 1952.
Maury attended school in the Frankton School System. He served in the Indiana National Guard.
He retired from Fisher-Guide, formerly of Anderson in 1991 after 38 years of employment. He was a past president of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Association in 1992. Maury was a former member of the Alexandria Lions Club and served as club president from 1983 to 1984. More recently he belonged to the Alexandria Community Service Club. He was a member of the Community Church of Alexandria.
He loved baseball and was active in founding a church softball league in Alexandria and was an avid, die-hard Cubs fan.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Webb) Pierce, whom he married Feb. 1, 1952; five sons, Terry and wife, Laura Pierce of Columbia, Tenn., Tony Pierce and Tom and wife, Kathy Pierce, all of Alexandria, John and wife, Fran Pierce of Houston, Texas and Monty and wife, Lisa Pierce of Columbus, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1959; his stepfather, Fred Cartwright in 1968; and his mother in 1981.
A Homegoing Celebration will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria, with Pastor Mike Robbins of Community Church of Alexandria, officiating. Burial will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Alexandria.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Members of the Alexandria Lions Club and the Alexandria Com-munity Service Club are invited to pay their respects at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Church of Alexandria or St. John’s Hospice program through the funeral home.

Dorothy E. Matchett
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Dorothy E. (Avery) Matchett, beloved wife of the late Chester Matchett, loving mother of James (Jane) Matchett, grandmother of David and Steven (Connie) Matchett, and great-grandmother of Liz and Ben, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008 at age 94.
Dorothy was born in Elwood.
Gravesisde services were at 11 a.m. today at the Elwood City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the East Main Street Christian Church Radio Fund, 1801 Main St., Elwood, Ind. 46036.
The Anderson Funeral Home in Cincinnati, Ohio, is handling arrangements.

Mark James Bates
CICERO – Mark James Bates, 48, Cicero, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2008 at Riverview Hospital.
Born Nov. 14, 1959 in Sullivan, he was the son of N. James and Andre (Bowman) Bates. They preceded him in death. On Oct. 27, 1984, he married Lori L. Riedel. She survives.
He was a 1978 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School in Madison. He then earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1982. In 1994, he received an MBA from Butler University.
He first worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Lafayette. He then worked for EDS in Indianapolis. He was currently CFO at Indiana Automation/Inte-grator.com, a division of Best/Stanley Works in Noblesville.
He was a member of Sonship Fellowship in Westfield, ATO Fraternity, NRA and Central Indiana Chapter of Delta Waterfowl.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Matthew Bates and John Mark Bates, both of Cicero; a daughter, Annie Bates, also of Cicero; a brother, Jeff Bates of Madison; and a sister, Kathy Beasley of Pittsboro.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Arcadia Christian church. Pastor Charles Spradlin will officiate. Burial will follow at Cicero Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel.

Mary Jane Jones
Mary Jane Jones, 86, of Anderson and formerly of Elwood, died Sept. 1, 2008, at Rawlins House Health Care in Pendleton after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 20, 1921, in Elwood.
She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Elwood and Elwood Public Schools.
She worked in production for 27 years at Delco Remy in Anderson retiring in May of 1980. She also formerly worked as a hairdresser in Elwood.
She was a former member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in El-wood and a current member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ander-son. She was also a member of U.A.W. No. 662 in Anderson.
Survivors include her husband, James Lee Jones, whom she married Oct. 19, 1971; two daughters, Judy and husband, Jerry Faucett of Anderson and Karen and husband, Richard Towner of Jack-sonville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jeffery and wife, Julie Reynolds of New Fairfield, Conn., Lorie and husband, Greg Ebbert of Pendleton, Rick Towner of Hubert, N.C. and Michael and wife, Donna Towner of Jacksonville, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Andy Ebbert, Ashley Ebbert, Savannah Towner, Jack Reynolds and Emma Reynolds; a sister-in-law, Delores O’Brien; three stepchildren, Vickie Jones and Dawn Jones of Paducah, Ky. and James and wife, Colleen Jones of Indianapolis; five stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur D. O’Brien Sr. and Elsie H. (Stettler) O’Brien; a son, Jerry Hartley; a granddaughter, Lisa Renee Reynolds; a sister, Arlene Sprouls; a brother, Arthur “Bud” O’Brien Jr. and two half brothers, Richard Merrifield and Robert Merrifield.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, with Father Robert Williams officiating. Burial will take place in the Elwood City Cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the National Kidney Foundation through the funeral home.

Velva E. Shelton
ALEXANDRIA – Velva E. (Collis) Shelton, 84, Alexandria, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at the Alexandria Care Center after an extended illness.
She was born Nov. 11, 1923, in Alexandria, the daughter of Kenneth and Josephine (East) Collis.
She had lived in the Alexandria area most of her life.
She retired from Rowland Tile in Anderson after nine years employment. She also managed the gift shop at the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville. She and her late husband, Herbert, were fond of railroading and they both worked on the Indiana State Fair Train for two years.
Survivors include a brother, Ernest and wife, Phyllis Collis of Elwood; a sister, Bernadine Howell of Lapel; four nieces; four nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband of 61 years, Herb Sheton who died in 2003.
Graveside services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria, with the Rev. Mark Joyner officiating.
The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the staff of Alexandria Care Center for the kind and compassionate care they showed to Velva.
Arrangements are being handled by Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria.
