Terry Lee “Chub” Cherry
ATLANTA — Terry Lee “Chub” Cherry, 52, Atlanta, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at Tipton Hospital.
Born Oct. 16, 1955 in Tipton, he was the son of Layton Cherry and Virginia (Crail) Cherry Tidler. They preceded him in death. On June 1, 1985, he married Princess J. Samuels. She survives.
He was a 1974 graduate of Hamilton Heights High School. He was employed at Bridgestone/-Firestone Products Company in Noblesville.
He was a member of the Tipton Sons of the American Legion.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Shawn R. Cherry and Zach T. Cherry, both of Atlanta; a daughter, Lindsay Cherry of Atlanta; three brothers, Stan Cherry of Atlanta, Mike Cherry of Tipton and Ron Cherry of Tipton; and his stepfather, William Tidler of Tipton.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel. The Rev. Mark Knapp will officiate. Burial will follow at Arcadia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Merle L. Perkins
Merle Lee “Perk” Perkins, 84, of Elwood, died Sept. 8, 2008, at his home.
Born Feb. 4, 1924, in Elwood, he was the son of Raymond and Mary (Morris) Perkins.
He married Sue Beeman Oct. 6, 1962.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army and was employed as a siding applicator.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Beeman; five sons, Mike Perkins of Elwood, David Perkins of Elwood, Doug Perkins of Texas, Merle Ray Perkins of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Harley Perkins of Elwood; two daughters, Lela Simmons of Elwood and Sherry Farr of Westfield; one stepdaughter, Penny Morrison of Elwood; a stepson, Sammy McPhearson of Elwood; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bud McPhearson and a brother, Robert Perkins.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom King officiating. Burial will be in the Elwood City Cemetery
with graveside military rites by the Elwood VFW.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lewis Lee Purvis
SHARPSVILLE – Lewis Lee Purvis, 82, Sharpsville, died at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at his residence.
Born April 1, 1926 in Sharpsville, he was the son of Clurd H. and Bonnie B. (Shook) Purvis. On Oct. 30, 1953, he married Ruby Arlene Dunlap at the home of Bonnie Purvis. She preceded him in death on Feb. 4, 1999.
He had worked at Steel Parts and as a custodian at the Tipton County Courthouse.
He lived all his life in Sharpsville. He was a member of the American Trappers Association. He liked to hunt, fish and trap. He enjoyed his family.
He is survived by two sons, Terry and wife R. Ellen Purvis of Sharpsville and Kevin E. Purvis and special friend Regina K. Suiters and her daughters, Amber R. and Morgan M. Suiters of Sharpsville; a granddaughter, Amanda Racey of Kokomo; three great-grandchildren, Shawn Racey, Andrew Racey and Vivian Racey; and a sister, Rose Engle of Galveston.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Helen Wells and Pat Christian; and two brothers, C.H. Purvis and Vern Purvis.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Boyer Funeral Home in Sharpsville. The Rev. Richard Lyth will officiate. Burial will be in Sharpsville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Kenneth Smith
Kenneth “Speedy” Smith, 92, of Anderson, died early today at Community Hospital.

Katherine Adams
ALEXANDRIA – Katherine A. “Kitty” Adams, 60, of Alexandria, died Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Community Hospital in Anderson.

James W. Hickman
James W. Hickman, 47, of Elwood, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at St.Vincent Mercy Hospital.
He was born Dec. 30, 1960, in Baltimore, Md., the son of James and Phyllis (Owen) Hickman.
He married Irmgard “Maria” Stauder Sept. 21, 1986.
He was a veteran of the United States Army.
Jim loved spending time with his family and was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Irmgard “Maria” Hickman of Elwood; a son, Anthony Hickman of Elwood; three daughters, Amanda Hickman of Elwood, Vicki Cuic of Pennsylvania and Debra Serrao of Chicago; parents, James and Phyllis Hickman of Middlebourne, W.Va.; two sisters, Barbara Stokes of Sistersville, W.Va. and Sherry Barbioux of Pittsburgh, Penn.; a brother, Oliver Hickman of Washington; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at Dunnichay Funeral Home, with Father Paul Cochran officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. with military graveside services by the Elwood VFW.

Betty J. Cardwell
Betty J. Cardwell, 82, Tipton, died at 5 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at Autumnwood Extended Care in Tipton.
Born Jan. 2, 1926 in Tipton, she was the daughter of Gustav and Bernice (Cottingham) Koeper. On July 31, 1954, she married Roy Cardwell. He preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1979.
She worked as a Railway Express & Western Union Agent. She was a member of Albright United Methodist Church and the Verus Cordis Sorority.
She is survived by one daughter, Pamela Saltzman and her husband Ray of Tipton, and one grandson, Randall Saltzman.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home. The Rev. Joshua Netherton will preside. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Kenneth E. Smith
ANDERSON – Kenneth E. “Speedy” Smith, 92, of Anderson, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at Community Hospital in Anderson.
He was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Madison County, the son of the late Benjamin F. and Mary A. (Huffman) Smith.
He married Louise G. Reichart. She died Jan. 3, 1983. He married Margot Deines Jan. 7, 1987. She survives.
He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Germany in World War II.
He was a member of the Frankton Christian Church, the Frankton Lions Club, the Anderson Elks Lodge and the Eastside Community Club.
He retired from G.M.Delco Remy in 1974 after 34 years. He built Wausau homes after retirement until 1998. He also owned and operated a restaurant in Frankton for years.
Survivors include his wife, Margot (Deines) Smith of Anderson; a daughter, Lynnette Cooper of Dowagiac, Mich.; stepdaughter, Ethel Haber of Arizona; stepson, Robert Zeuner of Cicero; a sister, Demmie-Ree Carpenter of Arcadia; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Louise Smith; brothers, Truman, Ovid and Forest Smith; and a sister, Erma Lee McMahon.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at Harper & Dunnichay Funeral Home in Frankton, with the Rev. Alvin Covell officiating. Burial will follow at the K of P & I.O.O.F. Cemetery
in Frankton.
Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Katherine A. Adams
ALEXANDRIA – Katherine A. “Kitty” Adams, 60, of Alexandria, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at Community Hospital in Anderson.
She was born Aug. 9, 1948, in Roanoke, Va., the daughter of Reul Jay and Mabel Trivett Wingo.
She formerly worked at the Alexandria Middle School for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband, Michael E. Adams, whom she married July 13, 1968; a son, the Rev. David Adams of Bedford; a daughter, Julie Benzenbower of Howell, Mich.; two grandchildren; brothers, Bob Wingo of Roanoke, Va., Bunny Wingo of Flora, Ill. and Jack Wingo of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a sister, Karen McClung of Roanoke, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Betty Labiosa and three nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at the Mounds Baptist Church in Anderson, with the Rev. Clifton Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Park View Cemetery
in Alexandria.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Owens Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
