William Elles
William M. Elles, 65, of Evansville, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at his home of cancer. He was the former assistant vice president of Old National Bank’s trust department.
He raised, trained and raced horses and was director of thoroughbred horse racing for Florida and later for Kentucky and Illinois, retiring in 1993.
He was a graduate of Bosse High School and Indiana University.
He competed in state and national Senior Games.
Surviving are his wife, Billie; three sons, William M. of Memphis, Tenn., Michael C. of Fort Worth, Texas, and James N. of Evansville; a stepson, Jay Siekmann of Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Robert Dean of North Blanford, Conn.; and four grandchildren, Mathew, Patrick and Audrey Elles and Candace Siekmann.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. C. Mac Hamon officiating, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Deaconess/Ohio Valley Hospice Care or Central Methodist Church (Gift of Love).
Julia Koressel
Julia J. Koressel, 92, of Evansville, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Holiday Health Care. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Altar Society, senior citizens at the church and former member of the Harmony Extension Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Wenzel of Mequon, Wis.; three sons, Robert and Ralph, both of Evansville and Charles of Seattle; 10 grandchildren, Deborah Schickel, Donna Martin, Michael, Kathy, Katrina and Christopher Koressel, Lori Hayden and Heather, Alex and Sally Wenzel; and nine great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Raymond, died in 1984.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Pierre Funeral Home, continuing at 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, the Rev. Gene Schroeder officiating, with burial in St. Joseph cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with a 6:30 p.m. memorial service.
Matilda Robertson
Matilda Verne “Tillie” Robertson, 98, of Newburgh, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, .at Wodlands Convalescent Center. She had worked as a housekeeper for families in the Chicago area from 1920 to 1948 and in Huntingburg for Dr. Stork and his family, retiring in 1970.
Surviving is a sister, Lettie McIntosh of Evansville.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ziemer Funeral Home Central Chapel, the Rev. Kenneth Raymes officiating, with burial in Fairmont cemetery in Huntingburg.

Michael Deno
OAKLAND CITY, Ind. — Michael E. Deno, 24, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville. He was fatally shot while making a routine traffic stop.
He was an Oakland City police officer.
He was a 1999 Indiana Law Enforcement Academy graduate, 1994 Wood Memorial High School graduate and was attending Oakland City University.
He was a member of the Oakland City Fire Department, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 115 and Somerville Gun Club.
Surviving are his wife, Cindy (Willis); his mother and stepfather, Cindy and Tom Bonilla of Oakland City; his father and stepmother, Melvin and Anita Deno of Oakland City; two sisters, Penny Smith and Jenny Strickland, both of Oakland City; a stepsister, Julie Hessler of Evansville; a brother, Matt stationed in the Army in Schweinfurt, Germany; three stepbrothers, Jason Mullen stationed in the Navy in Italy, Jeff Mullen stationed in the Navy at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, and Dana Bonilla of Antioch, Calif.; grandmothers, Violette Ellis and Dora Deno; and stepgrandparents, Elna Thompson and Mr and Mrs Paul Bonilla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Johnson Center at Oakland City University, with burial in Montgomery cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 pm. today at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home and from 8 a.m. to service time at the Johnson Center.

Ralph Whitlock
BOONVILLE, Ind. — Ralph N. Whitlock, 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, at the home of his caregiver, Steve Evans. He had worked as a concrete finisher.
He was a World War II Army veteran and member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3418 in Boonville.
He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church since 1958.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Juanita; two daughters, Mary Beck of Newburgh and Shelia Harris of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and three grandchildren, Jeremy, Micah and Jessica Beck.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Calvary Baptist Church, with burial in Maple Grove cemetery, with military rites conducted by Post 3418.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 pm. Friday at Koehler Funeral Home Boonville Chapel and from 10 a.m. to service time at the church.

Rosa Holzgrebe
ST. PHILIP, Ind. — Rosa Holzgrebe, 82, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of heart failure.
She was a member of the St. Philip Catholic Church.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Philip Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Erma Montgomery
POSEYVILLE, Ind. — Erma E. Montgomery, 83, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Westpark Rehabilitation Center in Evansville. She had been a telephone operator.
Surviving are son, Anthony W. “Tony” of Poseyville; a granddaughter, Angela Schwenk; and a great-grandchild.
Her husband, Manuel L., died in 1994.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Werry Funeral Home, with burial in Laurel Hill cemetery in Wadesville.

Mary Baker
WADESVILLE, Ind. — Mary Louise Baker, 68, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center in Newburgh of cancer.
She was a retired supervisor.
Surviving are her husband, Kenneth; a son, Dennis of Kingsport, Tenn.; her mother, Annabelle Mercer of Crossville, Ill.; three sisters, Jolene Nelson of Cadiz, Ky., Margaret Ann Pierce of Crossville and Carolyn Bond of Marion, Ill.; two brothers, Clarence and Ray Mercer, both of Crossville; six grandchildren, Misty Payne, Elizabeth, Tracy and Kristopher Baker, Mark Anderson and Melody McKee; and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Werry Funeral Home New Harmony Chapel, with burial in Bellefontaine cemetery in Mount Vernon.

Mary Stephenson
MOUNT VERNON, Ind. — Mary E. Stephenson, 94, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at New Harmony Health Care.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Minnie Campbell of Johnson City, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Patricia Amor, Brenda Wardeska, Donna Lutz and Ronald Campbell; eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leo Balmer and her second husband, Hobart Stephenson.
Services will be at 2 pm. Friday at Norvell Funeral Home, with burial in Fuller cemetery in Dale.

Othniel Jones
WASHINGTON, Ind. — Othniel Kermit “John” Jones, 89, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Eastgate Manor Nursing Center.
He had worked for the McCord Corp.
He was a World War II Army veteran and 50-year member of the American Legion.
He attended the Aikman Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Jo Ann Blackwell and Janice Craney, both of Washington; a sister, Rosemary Marshall of Peoria, Ill.; a brother, Jack R. Jones of Washington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
His wife, Harriett Eleanor (Goodrid), died in 1986.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Gill Chapel, with burial in Aikman Creek cemetery.

Millard Black
Millard Haymond Black, 87, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center.
He established the Brown Military Academy of the Ozarks, was head of the Brown Military Academy in San Diego, Calif., and taught for the U.S. Department of Indian Affairs.
He had been head of the sixth-grade curriculum for the Los Angeles city schools and helped write two elementary textbooks. He retired in 1977 from the Los Angeles school district.
He was a World War II Army veteran and had been on the staff of Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the counter-intelligence section. He received two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He was a graduate of John Brown University and had a degree in education from Temple University.
He was Episcopalian and had taught Sunday school and played the organ in several churches around the country.
Surviving are two adopted sons, Ronald Bundy and Robert Hicklin, both of Newburgh; two grandchildren, Stuart Hicklin and Tammy Hicklin Cox; and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Evansville. There will be no visitation at Simpson Funeral Home Newburgh Chapel.
