Anita Gail Christian
SENECA, S.C. – Anita Gail Christian, 49, Seneca, S.C., died at 1 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008 at Cottingham House in Seneca.
Born Dec. 26, 1958 in Kokomo, she was the daughter of Thurman and Virginia (Martin) Higginbotham. On May 28, 1977, she married Randy L. Christian in Sharpsville. He survives.
She graduated from Western High School in 1977. She lived in Seneca for 20 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Anna L. Christian of Seneca, S.C.; two sisters, Judy Higginbotham of Kokomo and Peggy Williams of Greenwood; and four brothers, Bob Bothman of Wahalla, S.C., John Higginbotham of Ohio, Gary Higginbotham of Peru and Larry Higginbotham of Wahalla, S.C.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Boyer Funeral Home in Sharpsville. The Rev. Richard Lyth will officiate. Burial will be in Sharpsville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Bill Edwin Farley
ATLANTA – Bill Edwin Farley, 76, Atlanta, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008 at Riverview Hospital in Noblesville.
Born March 30, 1932 in Atlanta, he was the son of Wayne A. and Thelma (Small) Farley. His parents preceded him in death.
On July 22, 1955, he married Dewillis “Dee” Webb. She survives.
He was a 1950 graduate of Jackson Central High School. He then served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Berlin, Germany from 1952 to 1954.
He was employed at Lynch Corp. in Anderson for 34 years. He then was a custodian at Hamilton Heights Schools for 10 years.
He attended Atlanta Wesleyan Church and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He served on the Atlanta Town Council for 10 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Fred A. Farley and Wayne Alan Farley, both of Atlanta; a brother, Jerry Farley of Indianapolis; a sister, Betty Thomas of North Fort Myers, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Graveside rites will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Arcadia Cemetery. Pastor Dan Early will officiate.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hartley Funeral Homes Cicero Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Atlanta Women’s League, c/o Hartley Funeral Homes, P.O. Box 407, Cicero, IN 45034.

Louis R. Whatley
ALEXANDRIA – Louis R. “Louie” Whatley, 86, Alexandria, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2008, at Community Hospital in Anderson after a brief illness.
He was born Jan. 29, 1922, in Daisy, Ark., the son of William and Belle (Cogburn) Whatley.
He had resided in the Alexandria area most of his life.
Louie was a graduate of Kirby High School in Kirby, Ark.
He served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was a part of the Omaha Beach Landing on D-Day. Nearly 60 years after his military service, Louie was awarded the Bronze Star medal for meritorious service. Mayor Steve Skaggs declared Aug. 16, 2004, to be Louie Whatley Day in Alexandria.
He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Joe Kernan.
Louie retired from Guide-Lamp, formerly of Anderson in 1983 after 30 plus years of employment. He was a long-time member of the Alexandria Christian Congregation Church. He was a 50 year member and past master of the Anderson Solar Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Mary (Brewer) Whatley, whom he married May 22, 1953; a son, Bradley and wife, Sherry Whatley of Alexandria; five grandchildren, Renee and husband, Kyle Wilcox of Anderson, Daniel Whatley of Anderson, and Isaac, Jacob and William Whatley, all of Alexandria; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Jewell Younger and Jorene Davis.
A Home Going Celebration service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 at the Christian Congregation Church in Alexandria, with Pastor Jerry Young officiating. Burial will follow at the Park View Cemetery in Alexandria with military honors provided by Elwood VFW No. 5782.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Owens Funeral Home in Alexandria. The Solar Masonic Lodge will conduct memorial services at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Congregation Church through the funeral home.

Michael D. Benefiel
CICERO – Michael D. Benefiel, 56, died Oct. 14, 2008 in Cicero.
He was born Jan. 21, 1952 in Elwood, the son of Don and Minnie (Ballinger) Benefiel.
He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict.
He was employed as an electrician.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela Miller of Mooresville; a son, Trent D. Benefiel of Cicero; a brother, Don Benefiel Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Anita Hunt; and two grandchildren.
Cremation was chosen.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, 2008 at Jackley-Landrum Funeral Home.

James C. Bernard
James C. “Gus” Bernard, 83, of Elwood, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 at St.Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood.
Gus was born Oct. 3, 1925, in Elwood, the son of James Bernard and Pauline (Duebendorfer) Bernard.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps serving during World War II and a member of the Frankton American Legion.
He retired from State Plating of Elwood and was an avid antique collector and a collector of Wendell L. Willkie memorabilia.
He married Marilyn Jean Nord Feb. 22, 1958. She passed away March 10, 2004.
He is survived by his daughter, Anita and husband, Stephen Byrd of Elwood; two sons, Jerry Mills of Anderson and Robert and wife, Carolyn Mills of Peru; five grandchildren, Shea and wife, Susie Mills, Shannon Curry, Josh and wife, Jamie Walker, Ashley Walker and Danielle Greene; five great-grandchildren, Tabitha Milford, James Curry, Jessica Greene and Ella and Lila Walker; and a sister, Josephine Elzey of Buffton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a sister, Laur Ellen Hill.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2008 at Dunnichay Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Elwood City Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

John M. Reed
WINDFALL – John M. Reed, 89, Windfall, died at 10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 at Tipton Hospital.
He was born April 22, 1919 in Frankfort to Fred and Trella Grace (Meeks) Reed. On July 10, 1947, he married Lela Stout. She survives.
He worked as a furnace operator at Continental Steel in Kokomo, retiring in 1981. John was a member of Windfall Church of the Brethren. He was a member of the NRA, Tipton American Legion, Kokomo Veterans of Foreign Wars and Order of the Purple Heart.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in Africa, Sicily, Italy, Southern France, the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle for the Rhine. He made two D-Day landings with the 3rd Infantry Division. John received three purple hearts, a bronze star, two arrowheads and seven campaign stars. He received a commendation from the French Consulate and also from General George Patton.
In addition to his wife, Lela, he is survived by one daughter, Pam Stout of Tipton; one son, Fred B. Reed of Kokomo; one sister, Vanzie Baldwin of Kokomo; nine grandchildren, John Wayne Stout, Amanda Powell, Renee Sharp, Terrie Dilley, Fredrick Reed Jr., Jeffrey Jumper, Sharon Coakley, Mindy Carter and Anthony Winters; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, John M. Reed Jr., one daughter, Hannah D. Winters; two sisters, Francis Chasteen and Rosetta Wallace; three brothers, Roland Reed, Buck Reed and Jim Reed.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home. The Rev. Joe Coffin and the Rev. Arley Mitcham will preside. Burial will follow in Sharpsville Cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Tipton American Legion, 129 N. Independence St., Tipton, IN 46072.

Juanita J. Zaloudek
Juanita J. Zaloudek, 87, Tipton, died at 10:25 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 at Miller's Merry Manor in Tipton.
She was born Dec. 31, 1920 in Tipton to Lester and Beatrice (Armstrong) Emehiser. On May 17, 1946, she married Kenneth N. Zaloudek. He preceded her in death on Feb. 11, 2005.
She worked in the stenographic and clerical field and was also an abstractor. She had also served as deputy treasurer and deputy clerk for Tipton County.
She was a member of West Street Christian Church, an associate member of Haines City Christian Church in Florida and American Legion – Charles Sturdevant Post No. 46. She was a 50-year member of Rosary Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the Tipton County Historical Society. She had been a Cub Scout den mother, Girl Scout Brownie leader, Girl Scout leader, Day Camp chairman and district chariman.
Juanita served in the U.S. Navy Women's Reserve during World War II.
She is survived by two daughters and one son, Pamela J. Cook and husband Dennis of Tipton, Jeffrey C. Zaloudek and wife Lorna of Lindenhurst, Ill. and Aleta K. Zaloudek of Russellville, Ark.; five grandchildren, Kathy Dell and husband Brian, Karen Bocock and husband Dean, Linda Cook, Derek Zaloudek and wife Valerie and Evan Zaloudek; four great-grandchildren, Jeremy Dell, Jamey Dell, Cliff Bocock and Nicholas Sottong.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home. The Rev. Kurt Gremel will preside. Burial will be in the VA National Cemetery in Marion.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Jon Parr
OCALA, Fla. – Jon Parr, 54, Ocala, Fla. and formerly of Tipton County, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008 in Ocala.
Born Jan. 15, 1954 in Ocala, he was the son of James and
Deloris (Taylor) Parr. He graduated from Tipton High School in 1972. He was a member of the Indiana Tractor Pullers Association. He was a farmer and also was a bus driver for the Tipton Community School Corporation.
Jon and Robin (Castor) Parr were the parents of three children, Sarah Parr, Jonny Parr and A.J. Castor, all of Tipton. They survive. Jon is also survived by three sisters, Linda Sanchez of Florida, Ilene Demarest of Florida and Betty Vance of Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Porter Funeral Home in Tipton. Pastor Doug Slack will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
