Emma Brown

Emma E. “Tuts” Brown, 92, of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Brentwood Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was a Christian and member of the Owls.

Surviving are two sons, Donald L. of Evansville and Gene R. of Mount Vernon, Ind.; a brother, Henry Duncan of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Terry, Scott and Mike Brown; and three great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Lee Raymond, died in 1979.

There will be no visitation at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Tupman cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the nursing home activities department or the Alzheimer’s Association.

John Prehara

John H. Prehara, 78, of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at his home of cancer.

He retired from the press department of Whirlpool

Corp. after 30 years.

He was a World War II Navy veteran and member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Barbara; three sons, Richard L. of Pendelton, Ind., Roger W. of Evansville and Lowell D. of Redwood City, Calif.; two sisters, Dorothy Barlow of Watseka, Ill., and Martha Moore of Lincoln, Ill.; five grandchildren, Laura and Katie Prehara and Kathlee, Kevin, and Keegan Cherry; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel, the Rev. Eugene Dewig officiating, with burial in St. Joseph cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. memorial service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Deaconess/Ohio Valley Hospice.

Eugene Schaefer

Eugene Edward Schaefer, 93, of Evansville, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at his home of cancer.

He had worked for Chrysler, International Harvester and the Evansville sewage treatment plant.

He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Surviving are seven daughters, Madonna Spalding, Judy Kaczmarczyk, Angela Knight and Rosie Dean, all of Evansville, Marie Roper, Cathy Dengler and Jennifer Pletz, all of Allentown, Pa.; two sons, Timothy of Mount Vernon, and Kenneth of Evansville; three brothers, Jerome of Evansville and Robert and Raymond, both of Elberfeld; 23 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel, continuing at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in the city, the Revs. Michael E. Allen and Theodore G. Tempel officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.

Thomas Reitz

Thomas W. Reitz, 71, of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center from complications of cancer.

He retired from the Colonial Baking Co. and then worked part-time for Paragon Promotions.

He was a Korean War Veteran and member of American Legion Post 44 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2953.

He was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Newburgh.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, June; two daughters, Deborah Gentry and Theresa Reitz, both of Newburgh; a son, Thomas W. Jr. of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Betty Elfreich and Charlotte Titzer, both of Evansville and Ann Newlin of New Berlin, Wis.; and four grandchildren, Andrea and Matthew Gentry and Rosanna and Daniel Reitz.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, continuing at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with burial in St. Joseph cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the church.

Marjorie Johnson

Marjorie J. Johnson, 73, formerly of Evansville, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta, Ga. The cause of death has not yet been determined.

She was a member of the Shiloh United Methodist Church in Augusta and the Methodist Women’s Association.

Surviving are four daughters, Cheryl Walker of Martinez, Ga., Shirley Siddall of Evansville, Maribeth Blaswich of California and Carol Johnson of Vincennes, Ind.; four sons, Walter T. Jr. and Greg Siddall, both of Evansville and Harry and Mark Siddall, both of Augusta; two sisters, Virginia Dobson and Patsy Brock, both of Vincennes; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Starling-Hatcher Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Velma Simpson

Velma E. (Neidig) Simpson, 91, of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at St. Mary’s Health Care Services/Welborn Campus.

She retired as a nursing attendant in 1975.

She was a 71-year member and officeholder at Central United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Binate Sunday school class, United Methodist Women, Martha Circle, the Golden Age Group of Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church and had been honored with a special mission recognition pin for outstanding service the her church.

Surviving are a son, Donald Lee of Hardinsburg, Tenn.; a sister, Genevieve N. Ruston of Racine, Wis.; six grandchildren, Vickie Lynn, Donald Lee Jr. and Kim William Simpson, Sandra Swift, Kristi Bryant and Tammy Mimms; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Ralph Miller officiating, with burial in Park Lawn cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel.

Shirley Dunn

Shirley Louise (Moorhead) Dunn, 64, formerly of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Lawton, Okla., of respiratory failure.

She was a 1954 graduate of Reitz High School.

She worked at Columbia Southwestern Medical Center for 40 years.

She was a Women’s Army Corp veteran, serving in the Signal Corps and Teletype School at Fort Gordon, Ga.

She was active with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a Little League baseball coach.

She was a member of the Western Hill Christian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Regina Lynn Cunnigham of Joplin, Mo.; a son, Jeffrey Brent of Lawton; five sisters, Una Huber of Locust Grove, Okla., Doris Mikesell of Phoenix, Joyce Darrough of Roswell, N.M., June Smith of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Nancy Mikesell of Henderson, Ky.; four brothers, Robert Moorhead of Woodinville, Wash., Charles and William F. Moorhead, both of Evansville, and Joseph Moorhead of Brick Township, N.J.; four grandchildren, Heather Hemingway, Jessica White, Andrea Lynn Pointer and Jarrod Brent Dunn; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Western Hills Christian Church in Lawton, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military rites.

Becker Funeral Home in Lawton is handling arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church youth fund.

Raymond Kappner Sr.

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. — Raymond H. Kappner Sr., 79, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

He retired as a mechanic and a Huntingburg city employee.

He was a World War II Army veteran and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

Surviving are two sons, Ray Jr. and Joseph, both of Huntingburg; a sister, Janelia Jahn of St. Anthony; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his companion, Lucile Weyerbacher of Huntingburg.

A daughter, Annette Kappner and two sons, Paul and Gordon, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery, with military rites.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a rosary at 6 p.m. at Nass & Son Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Maxine Gaines

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. — Maxine Gaines, 74, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville of renal failure.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and Women of the Moose in Petersburg.

Surviving are two daughters, Beth Ann Murray of Boulder City, Nev., and Roberta Meyer of Stendal; a stepdaughter, Janice Greene of Terre Haute; a sister, Norma Jean Kinman of Las Vegas; two brothers, Wayne and Russell Stone, both of Petersburg; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

Her husband, Robert L., died in 1984.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. EST Tuesday at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg, with burial in Walnut Hills cemetery in Petersburg.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Michael Benton

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. — Michael Alan Benton, 49, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of smoke inhalation from a kitchen fire.

He worked as a salesman for D-Patrick.

He was an Army veteran and member of the Mount Vernon Elks and American Legion Post 5.

Surviving are his two stepdaughters, Terri and Toni McCormick, both of Mount Vernon; a stepson, Tim McCormick of Mount Vernon; his mother, Rose (Gwin) Benton of Mount Vernon; a sister, Pam Johnson of Mount Vernon; two brothers, Darrell of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., and Bill of Mount Vernon; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Boone Funeral Home Mount Vernon Chapel, with burial in Old Beech cemetery.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Owen Dunn American Legion Post 5.
