Charles Brown
Charles W. Brown, 51, formerly of Evansville, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at his home in Griffin, Ind., of cancer.
He had worked at Zenith before moving to Dallas were he was a self-employed industrial electrician.
Surviving are his wife, Amelia (Rieber); a stepdaughter, Stephanie Smith-Montgomery of Hazelton; a sister, Marty Stewart of Columbus, Ohio; three stepgrandchildren, Maya Smith and Kyle and Levi Montgomery; nieces and a nephew.
Services are pending at Miller & Miller Colonial Chapel in Evansville. There will be no visitation.
Paul Murphy
Paul W. Murphy, 84, of Evansville, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at Holiday Health Care Center.
He was a self-employed paper hanger, retiring in 1988.
He was a World War II Navy veteran and member of the Charles Denby Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2953.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Hazel (Miller); a son, Wallace N. of Evansville; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, continuing at 1 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Rev. Henry Kuykendall officiating, with burial in St. Joseph Catholic cemetery, with military rites.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
Jo Ann Mitchell
Jo Ann E. Mitchell, 69, of Evansville, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Evansville, from a stroke.
She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1114 Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed flower gardening.
Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn Tyring of Evansville; three sons, Gary of Chicago and Keith and Jeff, both of Evansville; and seven grandchildren, Ryan, Alisha, Erika, Jeffrey, Brittany, Haley and Chelsea Mitchell.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Alexander Funeral Home West Chapel, the Rev. Bret Nicholson officiating, with burial in Alexander Memorial Park.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Edward Abel
Edward M. Abel, 85, of Evansville, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at his home.
He retired from the Evansville Courier in 1976 after 16 years.
He attended the Indiana School of the Deaf.
He was on the advisory board for the Resource Agency for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and a member of the National Fraternal Society of the Deaf.
He was a member of the Eastview Community Church of Nazarene, and the Olde Tyme Auto Club.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Beulah; a daughter, Deeadra Cook of Boonville; a brother, Charles of Evansville; two grandchildren, Jamie and Scott Cook; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at noon Saturday in Alexander Memorial Park, the Rev. David Edwards officiating.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time at Alexander Memorial Park Heritage Chapel.
Frederick Brandenberger
Frederick William Brandenberger, 94, of Evansville, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at his home.
In 1931 he began his career at National City Bank of Evansville as a collection teller and retired in 1970 as an assistant to the vice president. He taught American Institute of Banking classes in mortgage lending and principles of bank operations at the Evansville College night school and lectured on all phases of banking at the Evansville high schools. He had taught Dale Carnegie classes in the Evansville area.
He was a 1923 graduate of Central High School and held a graduate certificate from the American Institute of Banking.
He was a member of the Rotary Club, Evansville Chamber of Commerce and he was a tenor in the Chancel Choir.
He was an elder, teacher and superintendent of the Bethlehem United Church of Christ school, was a lay minister for the Indiana-Kentucky Conference and had served as treasurer of the conference and was a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Merom Institute.
Surviving are his wife of 70 years, May Elizabeth; a daughter, Bethalee J. Harpst of Shaker Heights, Ohio; a sister, Gladys Kuhlenschmidt of Evansville; two grandchildren, Lynnelle Harpst Tanner and Tamara Lee Harpst; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, the Revs. Gerald Schuessler and Larry Miller officiating, with burial in Oak Hill cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel and from 9 a.m. to service time at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church for the study of the ministry.
Zina McManaway
Zina V. McManaway, 85, formerly of Hawesville, Ky., sister of Everett Veach of Evansville, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Heartland Villa in Lewisport, Ky.
She was a member of the Patesville Baptist Church.
Also surviving are three daughters, Zella Nugent of Lewisport, Dorothy Kerner of Greenwood, Ind., and Brenda Spivey of Greenfield, Ind.; two sons, Leonard and Joe, both of Hawesville; two sisters, Clara Wheatley of Lewisport and Susie Walters of Westfield, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Wilbur, and an infant son, Kenneth Ray, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Gibson & Son Funeral Home in Hawesville, Ky., with burial in Cloverport cemetery.

Ruth Lambert
VINCENNES, Ind. — Ruth Lambert, 43, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. She had hepatitis.
She was a member of the First Christian Church.
Surviving is her father, Virgil Lambert of Vincennes.
Services will be at 3:15 p.m. EST today in the Mount Carmel cemetery in Mount Carmel, Ill.

Henrietta Switzer
TELL CITY, Ind. — Henrietta E. Switzer, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital in Huntingburg.
She had worked at several furniture factories for 50 years.
She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Ruth Kuiper of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a stepson, Clay Switzer of Evansville; a brother, Ed Euer of Grandview; a stepgrandson, Michael Switzer; two step great-grandchildren; and nieces.
Her husband, Albert, preceded her in death.
Services will be at 11 a.m. EST Saturday at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home, with burial in St. Mary’s cemetery.

WINSLOW, Ind. — Grace E. Johnson, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Wirth Regional Hospital.
She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church in Pike County.
Surviving are three stepsons, George E. Johnson of Petersburg, Arbutus Reed of Algiers, Ind., and Jerry Johnson of Bowman; a sister, Olive Woods of Winslow; three granddaughters, Brenda Buehler, Beverly Seivers and Deborah Murphy; five stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Edison, and a son, Jim Quiggins, preceded her in death.

FORT BRANCH, Ind. — Cathryn R. “Kitty” Bent, 73, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at her home after a long respiratory illness.
She was a member of the Fort Branch First Presbyterian Church and past member of the Gibson County Art Guild.
Surviving are her husband, Charles; two daughters, Dawn Lindauer of Fort Branch and Carol Ferguson of Petersburg; two sons, Darryl of Raymore, Mo., and Bill of Fort Branch; a sister, Edith Knippel of Savoy, Ill., and Meda Ballard of Evansville; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stodghill Funeral Home, with burial in Walnut Hill cemetery.

Harold Held
GRANDVIEW, Ind. — Harold O. Held, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
He had been a farmer and distributor for the Marathon Oil Co. He was a member of Grandview United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Helen; two daughters, Alice DeLuca of Owensboro, Ky., and Ruthann Held of Grandview; a son, John of Princeton; a sister, Ruth Davis of Rockport; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Boultinghouse Funeral Home in Rockport, with burial in Grandview cemetery.
