LaVerne M. Pfender, 81, of Evansville, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Westpark Rehabilitation Center.

She was a member of Calvary Temple.

Surviving are her husband, Charles; a daughter, Evelyn Bender of Evansville; a brother, Luther Skeels of Evansville; four grandchildren, Dorothy, Darren, Danny and Donnie; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel, with entombment in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Margaret Whitenack

Margaret Wilma Whitenack, 87, of Evansville, formerly of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Indianapolis, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

She had been a teacher in Jay County. She was a graduate of Ball State Teachers College. She formerly attended the Decatur (Ind.) Church of God.

Surviving are a daughter, M. Jane Gulick of Newburgh; two sisters, Virginia Bixler of Jackson, Mich., and Betty Frank of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Chad and Beth Gulick. Her husband, Ernest L., died in 1997.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, Ind., the Rev. Bob Brink officiating, with burial in Twin Hill cemetery in Pennville, Ind.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Adam Broshears II

Adam Leroy Broshears II, 35, of Evansville, died of pulmonary arrest Saturday, March 24, 2001, at his home.

Surviving are his mother, Loretta Broshears of Evansville; his father, Adam Broshears of Brooksville, Fla.; four brothers, Michael, Jason, Chad and Kraig, all of Brooksville; his grandmother, Vaunda Doughty; and his grandfather, Adam G. Broshears.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Alexander Newburgh Chapel, with burial will be in Florida.

Marjorie Cochran

WASHINGTON — Marjorie L. Cochran, 84, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Parkside Court Retirement Center in Columbus.

She had been the assistant executive director of Daviess County Red Cross from 1952 to 1962.

She was a 1935 graduate of Connersville High School. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Delta Theta Tau, Garden Club, honorary member of Sugarland Homemakers Club and former Gray Lady at Daviess County Hospital.

Surviving are a son, William A. of Columbus; a granddaughter; a stepgrandson ; and three great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris G., in 1979, and a son, Robert M.

Services will be at 1 p.m. EST Tuesday at Gill Funeral Home, with burial in Sugarland Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to service time.

Phyllis DeJarnett

PETERSBURG — Phyllis (Grove) DeJarnett, 61, died of a stroke Friday, March 23, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital.

She worked at Petersburg Health Care as a nurse’s aide, had attended Washington Catholic High School and was a member of Gospel Center Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Angela Simmons of Winslow, Jeanette Evans of Vincennes and Judy DeJarnett Simmons of Monroe City; two sons, Buddy Dale of Petersburg and Tony Leon of Vincennes; two sisters, Patricia Burris of Indianapolis and Frieda Grove of Petersburg; a brother, Bernard Dale Grove of Ashland, Ore.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1999, and a son, Buddy Lee.

Services will be at 2 p.m. EST Tuesday at Ed L. Lee Mortuary in Washington, with burial in Walnut Hill cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Miriam Elliott

MOUNT VERNON — Miriam Doris (Coonce) Elliott, 85, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Mount Vernon Nursing & Rehabilitation.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Stiles of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Carolyn Pearson of Mount Carmel; a son, Daniel of Mount Vernon; a sister, Mary Pearcy of Mount Vernon; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Her husband, Herman J., died in 1972.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Shiloh cemetery in Hazleton.

There will be no visitation at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton.

Martha Davis

MOUNT VERNON — Martha J. Davis, 75, died of an aortic aneurism Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital.

She retired in 1999 after 40 years as a seamstress for Davis Men’s Wear.

She was a Protestant.

Surviving are two daughters, Beth Greer of Benton, Ky., and Lisa Davis of Houston; two sisters, Myrna Koring of Mount Vernon and Vonda Irvin of New Harmony; five brothers, Vernon Miller of Cortez, Colo., Dale Miller of Zebulon, N.C., and Gerald, Kelley and Daniel Miller, all of Mount Vernon; two grandsons, Clay Angel and Tanner Peavy; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. A son, Greg, died in 1998.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Boone Funeral Home Mount Vernon Chapel, with burial in Bellefontaine cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Paul Seitz

Paul A. Seitz, 91, of Evansville, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital.

He retired in 1974 as assistant director after 37 years with the Vanderburgh County Welfare Department.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theater from 1942 to 1943, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1114.

He was a 1927 graduate of Central High School and a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Eunice; a sister, Genevieve Singer of Chandler, Ariz.; nieces and a nephew; and caregivers, Elzada and Theodore Jeffries and Vicki Trible.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Revs. Charles Robertson and Ralph Miller officiating, with burial in Park Lawn cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Kenneth Barr Sr.

Kenneth W. Barr Sr., 71, of Evansville, died of congestive heart failure Friday, March 23, 2001, at Deaconess Hospital.

He retired from the State Hospital in 1989 as an orderly.

He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and served in the Japanese and Korean war arenas. He was a Catholic and past chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2953, former commander of American Legion Post 265 and a member of American Legion Post 8 and 40 & 8 Voiture 471. He was a knife collector.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Betty; two daughters, Susan Barr of Evansville and Anabet Barr of Los Lunas, N.M.; two sons, Kenneth W. Jr. of Buckskin, Ind., and Louis of Evansville; his mother, Mary Alice Welborn of Evansville; and two stepgrandchildren, Daniel Luke and Scott Lane.

Services will be at noon Monday at Browning Funeral Home, with burial in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery, with military rites.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Michael Thompson

Michael Thompson, 36, son of Donald and Judith Thompson of Evansville, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his home in Maysville, Ga. The cause of death is being investigated.

He was a welder.

He was a veteran of the Army, serving as an Airborne Ranger in the Mountain Division. He was a member of Grove Level Baptist Church.

Also surviving are his wife, Lana of Maysville; a daughter, Casey Dodd of Maysville; a son, Jermy Jarrard of Maysville; and two sisters, Debbie Thompson of Evansville and Donna Thompson of Knoxville, Tenn.

Arrangement were handled by the Ivie Funeral Home in Maysville, with burial in Grey Hill cemetery in Commerce, Ga.

Nila Daugherty

Nila Grace Daugherty, 63, of Cadiz, Ky., mother of Shelia Ashby of Evansville, died of cancer Friday, March 23, 2001, at the Murray-Calloway County Hospital in Murray, Ky.

She was a nurse’s aide for more than 30 years. She was a member of Cadiz Pentecostal Revival Church.

Also surviving are her husband, William; a son, Raymond of Cadiz; a sister, Lois Jones of Evansville; two brothers, Cecil Murphy of Indiana and Charlie Murphy of Newtonville, Ind.; three grandchildren, Sean Frazier and Amy and Jennifer Crow; and two great-grandchildren, Brianna Smith and Austin Burton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Pentecostal Revival Church in Cadiz, with burial in Trigg Memory Acres.

Goodwin Funeral Home in Cadiz is handling arrangements.

Norbert Weyer

FERDINAND — Norbert J. Weyer, 87, died of respiratory failure Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Scenic Hills Care Center.

He retired from Jasper Engine Exchange.

He was a member of Woodmen of the World, Knights of Columbus, Ferdinand Senior Citizens and St. Joseph’s Sodality.

Surviving are his wife, Marie (Oser); two daughters, Norma Jean Long of Ferdinand and Eddy Wolf of McLean, Va.; a sister, Elfrieda Johanneman of Ferdinand; four grandchildren, Hayley Brosmer, Kris Keller, Alexandra VonWitzendorff and Bettina Wolf; and six great-grandchildren. A son, Thomas, preceded him in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Tuesday at St. Ferdinand Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Becher Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 6 p.m.
