Dorothy D. "Granny" Gregory

Dorothy D. "Granny" Gregory, 78, Tipton, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at 8:50 P.M. at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. She was born January 6, 1926, in Sano, Kentucky, to Thomas & Sally E. (Grandstaff) Dye. On March 25, 1950, she married John H. Gregory and he died January 10, 1964.

Dorothy worked as a QMA and had worked at Parkview and Dickey Nursing homes in Elwood until retiring in 1997. She lived the last 8 years with her daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Matt Leininger and enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jerry & Pam Gregory, Washington, Indiana, John R. Gregory, Elwood; one daughter and son-in-law, Melanie & Matt Leininger, Tipton; one brother , Clem Dye, Elwood, one sister Ruby Neat, Kentucky; 7 Grandchildren, Nichole Meyer, Lori Cox, Mandy Leever, Julie Cox, Heather Gmurk, Dion Leininger, and Joey Leininger; 8 great-grandchildren, Justin Meyer, John Myer, Gavin Cox, Jalen Cox, Devan Lynch, Caden Gibson, Emily Berry, and Cory Cox. She is also survived by two special friends, Vernon & Linda Leininger.

One son, John S. Gregory, and one daughter, Rita are deceased. Five sisters, Sarah, Cora, Susie, Mandy and Flora, and two brothers, Dempsy and Melvin also are deceased.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Friday, April 9, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home in Tipton with the Rev. Kurt Gremel presiding. Visitation will be from 2-8 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 82, Tipton, Indiana, 46072.

Fr. Fred H. Gschwind

Fr. Fred Gschwind, 79, 1440 W. Division Road, Tipton, died Wednesday, March 10, at 10:08 P.M. at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. He was born March 24, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Fred H. & Ida (Bullinger) Gschwind.

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Lafayette on June 3, 1952, after graduating from Mount St. Mary of the West Seminary in Norwood, Ohio. His first assignment was as Associate Pastor at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Lafayette. In 1956 he became Administrator of the Cathedral until 1958 when he was appointed Pastor of St. Patrick, Oxford and Diocesan Director, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine.

In 1965 Father became the Diocesan Director for Catholic Charities; 1969 he was appointed Pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Carmel; 1972 Pastor, St. Patrick, Oxford; 1982, Diocesan Director, Catholic Rural Life Conference, while continuing as Pastor, St. Patrick, Oxford. Father became the Pastor of St. John the Baptist in 1987 and served there until he was granted retirement in 2000. Even after retiring he continued to serve as Chaplain for the Sisters of St. Joseph in Tipton where he made his home.

Father is survived by two sisters-in-law, Marion Gschwind and Marcie Gschwind of Ohio; several nieces and nephews; and his long-time housekeeper, Pat Keefe. Two brothers, Donald and Robert Gschwind, are deceased.

Visitation for Fr. Fred will be Monday, March 15, from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the St. Joseph Center, 1440 W. Division Road, Tipton, (click here for map) with a wake service at 7:00 P.M. at the center. There will also be visitation Tuesday morning, March 16, at St. John the Baptist School, 340 Mill Street, Tipton, (click here for map) from 9:00 - 11:00 A.M.

Father's funeral will be Tuesday at 11:30 A.M. at St. John the Baptist School, with Bishop William L. Higi as the celebrant. The homilist will be Fr. Donald Gross, and concelebrants will be Fr. Thomas Zimmer, Fr. Michael Kettron, and Fr. Donald Eder. Burial will be at 4:00 P.M. Tuesday at St. Patrick Cemetery, Oxford, Indiana. Young-Nichols Funeral Home, Tipton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Merlin M. Harlow

Retired Tipton businessman Merlin Mott Harlow, 91, passed away on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. Born on March 11, 1913, the son of Daniel & Mabel (Mott) Harlow, he was raised in the Kempton area and was a graduate of Kempton High School and Purdue University.

While at Purdue, Mr. Harlow was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity. He supported this organization all through his life, serving for many years as chapter advisor to the young Purdue men. He received recognition and service awards for his volunteer contributions.

Upon graduation from Purdue, he worked for International Harvester Company in the manufacturing and sales departments in Ohio and Indiana. He later started his own business, Harlow Insurance Agency, in Tipton, representing several major insurance companies.

At the age of 67, he retired and sold the business to Richard and Robert Holland. The agency still operates under the name of Holland Insurance Services.

Mr. Harlow was involved with many fraternal and service organization activities. He was a member and president of the Tipton Kiwanis Club when all service clubs were working together to establish a hospital in Tipton.

Mr. Harlow also was a member of the Austin Masonic Lodge of Tipton where he was a 32nd degree mason. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Indianapolis and a Shriner with the Murat Temple in Indianapolis. A few years ago the Tipton County Shrine Club started a motorized unit called the “Roarin’ 70’s”. Comprised of small trail bikes, its members became quite famous for participating in parades throughout Indiana and nearby states. As a past parade chairman for the Tipton County Pork Festival, Mr. Harlow encouraged this and similar units to participate in the festival. In 1999 he served as Parade Grand Marshal.

Mr. Harlow was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret (Quick) Harlow, whom he married on July 8, 1938. She died on April 11, 2002. He is survived by his daughter Arlene Jacobs (Frank), Akron, Ohio, and son Stephen (Mary), Carmel, Indiana; grandchildren Brian Jacobs, Newport Beach, California, Eric Jacobs (Carrie), Akron, Ohio, Kathleen Yang (Michael), Cincinnati, Ohio, Lisa Handlon (Nathan), Chicago, Illinois, Scott Harlow, Santa Rosa, California; and a great-granddaughter, Danielle Marie Yang.

Mr. Harlow’s funeral service will be at 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 17, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, 216 W. Jefferson Street, Tipton, with Rev. Ed Smith presiding. Burial will follow in Kempton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00–5:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Kempton Christian Church, 707 S. West Street, Kempton, Indiana, 46049, where he and his wife were members.

Jerome A. Hellmann

Jerome A. Hellmann, 84, Tipton, died Sunday, October 31, 2004, at 7:15 p.m. in Select Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born February 20, 1920, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to John Henry & Philomena (Bockhold) Hellmann. On May 4, 1946, he married Dorothy T. Matkovic and she survives.

He was a farmer for 35 years and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tipton and a former member of the Parish Council and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. Jerome had also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and volunteered for the Civil Defense and Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of Farm Bureau Co-Op and served for several years on the Board of Directors for Indiana Farm Bureau. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII and was a Prisoner of War and belonged to the American Ex-POW Organization.

Jerome is survived by his wife Dorothy of Tipton; six daughters and two sons, Cecelia Trueblood, Martinsville, Jerome E. Hellmann, Chicago, Rita Marie Shoup, Indianapolis, Sharon Rose Blattner, Zionsville, Jean Marie Buffington, Dayton, Ohio, Annette Myers, Monticello, Kentucky, Maureen Anderson, Gurnee, Illinois, and Brian G. Hellmann, Phoenix, Arizona.

He is also survived by five sisters and three brothers, Helen Lustig, Alexandria, Ray Hellmann, Orlando, Florida, Sr. Catherine Hellmann, Tipton, Gilbert Hellmann, Kokomo, Leo Hellmann, Plainfield, Henrietta Day, Tipton, Mary Joan Koors, Tipton, and Patricia Parr, Lafayette; 22 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Cynthia Hellmann, and five brothers and one sister are deceased.

His funeral will be Thursday, November 4, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Dave Hellmann presiding. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Tipton, with military rites. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, 216 W. Jefferson Street, Tipton with a Wake Service at 7:00 p.m.

Dorothy R. Henderson

Dorothy R. Henderson, 79, 222 Walnut Street, Tipton, died Monday, November 15, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Autumnwood Extended Care at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. She was born May 24, 1925, in Harvey, Illinois, to Alva & Mae (Brannum) Hinton. On May 11, 1947, she married Frederick M. Henderson and he died November 18, 1997.

She was a long-time business owner in Tipton, a member of the West Street Christian Church, and a 1943 graduate of Tipton High School. After retiring she resided in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Dana Adams and her husband Chuck, San Diego, California and Nancy Tock and her husband Larry, Lancaster, Ohio; one son, Fred M. Henderson, Jr. and his wife Diane, Tipton; three grandchildren, Patrick Henderson and his wife Tina, Tipton, Elizabeth Tock, Lancaster, Ohio, and Phillip Tock, Lancaster, Ohio; one great-granddaughter, Hannah Henderson, Tipton.

Her funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 18, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Richard Hamm presiding. Burial will be in the Aroma Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

George W. Heston

George W. Heston, 82, Sheridan, and a former Tipton resident died Thursday, October 14, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Hospital, Indianapolis. He was born September 30, 1922, in Jay County, Indiana, to Russell & Mary (Clayton) Heston. He was married to Evelyn Meddler and after her death he married Melba Wolford. She died on November 8, 2003.

He worked with concrete in the construction industry and was a member of the Carpenter's Union and the American Legion. George served in the U.S. Army during WWII and received a Silver Star.

Survivors include seven sons, Lee Heston, Portland, Indiana, Joe Heston, Walnut Hill, Illinois, Robert Heston, Westfield, Kerry Heston, Indianapolis, Glenn Heston, Kempton, Ted Heston, Tipton, Tim Heston, Windfall; one brother, Herbert Heston, Redkey, Indiana; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

His funeral will be 3:00 P.M. Monday, October 18, at Union Cemetery in Parker City, Indiana, with burial to follow. Visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 P.M. Monday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, 216 W. Jefferson Street, Tipton.

Memorial contributions may be made to a fund for the education of George's grandchildren and may be sent to Sherry Heston, 504 E. Barbie Lane, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46280.

William R. Huff

William R. Huff, 84, Kokomo, died at 11:10 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2005, at his residence. He was born in Tipton on December 3, 1920 to Raymond Huff and Pearl (Knotts) Huff Jones. He married Evelyn G. Crawford on October 3, 1938, and she survives. He had previously lived in Brazil, Indiana for 25 years and Goldsmith, Indiana for 20 years.

William had retired in 1983 from Farm Bureau Insurance Company. He formerly had served as the Veterans Service Officer for Tipton County, Tipton County Treasurer, and the Tipton County Assessor. He was a member of the Goldsmith United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, B.P.O. Elks in Brazil and the American Legion. William served in the U.S. Army in WWII.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn, two daughters, Sherry Kay Watson of Goldsmith, Jerry Lee Gabriel of Kokomo and one son, William C. Huff of Kokomo. He has 9 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a half brother, James Jones in Pendleton. He was preceded in death by one brother, one sister and one great-grandchild

Funeral services will be held at the Goldsmith United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23, with Rev. Evan Strong presiding. Burial will follow in Tetersburg Cemetery with military rites at the graveside.. Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 22, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, Tipton and Wednesday at the church from 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Goldsmith United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.

Charlyn Jane James

Charlyn Jane James, 79, Kokomo, died Monday, September 6, 2004, at Waterford Place in Kokomo. She was born March 7, 1925, in Tipton County to Charles & Marie O. (Molden) Angel. On March 31, 1958, she married Eugene A. James and he died on November 10, 2003.

She was a homemaker and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and past treasurer of that organization. Jane also belonged to the Women of the Moose, Delta Theta Tau Sorority, and was an avid bingo player.

Survivors include one son, Victor L. Brown, Tipton; one daughter, Charlyn Stacey, Tipton; two brothers, Don Angel, Tipton, and Joe Angel, Linton; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One sister, Evelyn Larner is deceased.

Private family services have been held and she was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Tipton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Tipton County, P.O. Box 237, Tipton, Indiana, 46072.

Marjorie R. Johnson

Marjorie R. Johnson, 93, formerly of Windfall, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. She was born March 22, 1911, near Omega, Indiana, to James & Susie (Richwine) Caylor. On April 8, 1928, she married Harold Johnson and he died on June 5, 2002.

She was a homemaker and a member, organist and former Sunday School teacher at the Windfall Christian Church. Marjorie was a charter member and former office of Windfall Homemakers' Club and Tipton County Home Ec Association. She was a past member, past Worthy Matron, Treasurer and pianist of Windfall Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and recently she was a member of Rosary Chapter #66 Order of Eastern Star in Tipton. Marjorie volunteered weekly as a pianist at Millers Merry Manor in Tipton.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nelda & Gerry Heath, Beavercreek, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Patty Johnson, Windfall; a sister-in-law, Helen Hartley, Muncie; 6 grandchildren, Cathy & Walter Castor, Sharpsville, Rodney & Connie Johnson, Windfall, Tim & Patti Johnson, Windfall, Susie & Jeff McCorkle, Windfall, Jeff & Wanda Heath, Findlay, Ohio, and Brad Heath, Flagstaff, Arizona; numerous great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

One son, Bruce W. Johnson, and 3 brothers, Charles, Worth and Joe Caylor, and 5 sisters, June Burton, Norma Caylor, Ethel Kepner, Margaret Hunter and Josephine Webb are deceased.

Her funeral will be Tuesday, May 4, at 10:00 A.M. at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Roudebush presiding and burial to follow at Brookside Cemetery, Windfall. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Johnson Bible College, 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee, 37998.

LaKeita E. Legg

LaKeita Legg, 72, of Tipton, entered into eternal life September 29, 2011 at IU Health Tipton Hospital. She was born in Tipton County on December 22, 1938 to Frank and Jessie (Collingwood) Ricketts. On August 4, 1957 she married Philip D. Legg and he survives.

LaKeita was a beautician for many years, first opening LaKeita's Beauty Shop in the 1950's. She was also a homemaker and a loving wife and mom.

She was a member of Kemp United Methodist Church, volunteering for many church and community activities as well as Meals on Wheels and the Democratic Party. LaKeita cherished wintering in Sun City, California and was a "grandmother" to many and a friend to all.

LaKeita is survived by her husband, Philip; two daughters, Lor-Anna Jo Legg, Indianapolis, Shawn Dauree LeSavvas and husband Constantinos, Northridge, California; one son, Darrin Legg and wife Heather, Fallbrook, California; 5 grandchildren, Alyssa Legg (Woster), Krista Legg (Woster), Emily and Ryan Larson, and a grandson due February 2012; one brother, Larry Ricketts and wife Alex, Anderson, Indiana. In recent years Lynnea, Ben, Joe, Samuel, Noah and Isaac Humrichous lovingly adopted Phil and LaKeita as their grandpa and grandma.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 5 at the Kemp United Methodist Church, 228 N. Main Street, Tipton, with Rev. Phil Collier presiding. The family will receive visitors after the service. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at a later date. Young-Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Tipton County Foundation in memory of LaKeita E. Legg, P.O. Box 412, Tipton, Indiana, 46072.

LaKeita's family would like to thank the staff of IU Health Tipton Hospital for all of the care and support they provided during her hospital stay.
