Vincent McCormack

Vincent J. McCormack, 82 years young, died peacefully in his Kokomo home on Thursday, November 20, 2003, a beautiful sun-kissed morning. His beloved wife, Mary Jo (Terre) McCormack, was at his side in death, as she had been for the 49 years of their happily married life.

From Moneymore, County Derry, Northern Ireland, he was one of seven children born January 25, 1921, to Margaret and John McCormack, who are deceased. Three of his brothers, Bernard John, Patrick Gerald and Anthony, preceded him in death. His remaining siblings, Margaret Hawkins, Gene McCormack, both of Tipton, and Malachy McCormack, Kokomo, mourn his death and celebrate his life.

Vince retired as a printer at the Kokomo Tribune in 1987. He served as local President of the International Typographical Union in Kokomo, IN. His service to his parish church, St. Joan of Arc, was among his cherished works. He served as Eucharistic Minister as well as an Usher for 25 years. Days before his death he was received as an Associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph, Tipton, IN. For several years, he and Mary Jo volunteered at St. Joseph Center. He enjoyed reading with young children as a Book Buddy at Elwood Haynes Elementary School. Vince considered it a privilege and civic duty to work at the voting polls for the past 10 years.

Vincent and Mary Jo were godparents to six children: Margaret Hawkins, Veronica Maxwell, Mary Frances Fernung, Elena Rudy, Shayla Hawkins and Ryan Emrick. He was friend and champion to countless people who came into his life, never turning away from someone in need of an encouraging word or a bit o’ Irish blarney.

Words were sustenance for Vince McCormack. He loved to read, from the classics to the local newspaper. He was reciting verses from Oliver Goldsmith and Tennyson just hours before his death. He was equally enamored with talking, and talking and talking. . . his Irish wit never dulled! He took pleasure from attending plays, operas and symphonies with Mary Jo. He motivated and inspired young people to pursue their dreams. Vince played the violin with skill and pleasure, beginning with his participation in a dance band in Ireland in the 1940’s. He joyfully played for friends and families at various gatherings.

Vincent McCormack always had kind words for others and never expected them to be said of him. How difficult to say enough about him now! He truly was a gentleman and a gentle man who will be missed beyond expression.

And so we say . . . g’bye, Luv, until we meet again.
