Vivian M. Piety, 87
A retiree of Franklin Electric Co. in Bluffton, Vivian M. Piety, 87, of Decatur died at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept, 25, at Chalet Health Care Center in Berne, where she had been a patient for the past 10 years.
Mrs. Piety retired in 1975 after 25 years at Franklin Electric. She also was a homemaker and a graduate in 1932 of Kirkland High School in Adams County. She was a member of Park United Brethren Church in Bluffton.
She was born in Hunter, Ark., Aug. 9, 1915, a daughter of Ira and Mary Ward Thompson. A first marriage in Anderson on Sept. 27, 1934 was to Virgil E. Williams, who is deceased; her second marriage at Bluffton on June 5, 1955 was to Phillip Piety, who also is deceased.
Surviving are two sons, John E. Williams of Hertford, N.C., and William F. Williams of Greenfield, Ind.; a daughter, Mrs. Tim (Nancy M.) Magley of Decatur; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, with visitation for one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Tocsin cemetery.
Memorials to the Huntington College Scholarship Fund.

Andrew G. Swanson, 90
Andrew G. Swanson, 90, of Ossian, a retired electrician and farmer, died Friday Nov. 29, at Ossian Health Care.
Mr. Swanson was a veteran of U.S. Army service during World War II.
Mr. Swanson was born at Donovan, Ill., Sept. 27, 1912, a son of Emil and Carrie Hafstrum Swanson. He was married at Van Wert, Ohio, on May 8, 1978 to his wife, Maxine, who survives.
Additional survivors are a stepdaughter, Anita Haddix of Craigville; two stepsons, Chris A. Stier of Ossian and Gregory L. Stier of Fort Wayne; a sister, Elbe Johnson of Chicago. Ill.; six step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Three brothers and three sisters are deceased.
Services will be at 11 p.m. Wednesday at Hope Missionary Church in Bluffton with Pastor Gary Aupperle officiating. There will be no calling hours.
Memorials to the church or to Ossian Health Care.

Lucile Miller, 93
Mother of Dr. Gerald L. Miller of Markle, Lucile Miller, 93, of Goshen died at 6:20 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at Greencroft Gables Healthcare in Goshen.
Mrs. Miller retired in 1971 as a teacher in the Elkhart School System. She also had taught in Africa prior to and after her retirement. She had moved in 1955 from Shipshewana to Goshen.
She was a member of the College Mennonite Church, local, state and national chapters of the Retired Teachers Association, and Phalo Club and was a volunteer for Wheels to Meals and Choice Books.
She was born June 8, 1909, a daughter of Harry D. and Edith P. Wiler Miller. Her marriage at Shipshewana on May 15, 1932 was to Perry J. Miller, who died Feb. 21, 1992.
Surviving, in addition to the son at Markle, are two daughters, Mrs. Leon (Jewel E.) Schlatter of Leo and Mrs. Ron (Sally Jo) Milne of Goshen; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Three sisters are deceased.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at College Mennonite Church in Goshen with Pastors Klaudia Smucker and Firman Gingerich officiating.
Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Koinonia Room at the College Mennonite Church.
A prayer service will be conducted at the church at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Shore cemetery at Shipshewana. Yoder-Culp Funeral Home in Goshen is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials to the Goshen College International Students Fund.

Ruth Pratt, 89
A graveside service for Ruth Pratt, 89, formerly of Andrews, was held at 2 p.m. today at Riverside cemetery in Andrews.
Miss Pratt, who was a resident of the United Methodist Memorial Home at Warren, died Thursday, Nov. 28, at the Bluffton Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Andrews United Methodist Church. She was born Feb. 27, 1913, a daughter of Lewis and Ethel Brewer Pratt.
Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Homer (Jane) Kline of Huntington. A brother, Thomas Pratt, and a sister, Bethel McVay, are deceased.
Visitation was held today at the Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the graveside service. Rev. John Wallace presided at the cemetery interment.

Marvin R. Curtis, 64
A retired operating engineer, Marvin R. Curtis, 64, of Fort Wayne, died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mr, Curtis had retired from Operating Engineers Union 103 in Fort Wayne.
He was a member of the Bethel Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Fort Wayne and his interests included hunting, fishing and playing the banjo and guitar.
He was born at Thealka, Ky., June 7, 1938, to Hobart and Hattie Ward Curtis. His marriage at Huntington on Dec. 20, 1982 was to Shirley “Sue” Bollenbacher, who survives.
Surviving also are six sons, Thurman of Montpelier, Hobart of Redkey, Kenneth C. of Bryant, Robert of Portland, Joe of Poneto and Hubert of Ridgeville; a daughter, Deborah Renner of Berne; three brothers, Lloyd of Petroleum, Fred of Indianapolis and Joel of Stafford, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. A brother and a sister are deceased.
Service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne with Pastor Lorenza Hurd officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery at Berne.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 3 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time for services.
Memorials to Bethel Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Fort Wayne.

Bernard F. Horn, 80
Bernard F. “Barney” Horn, 80, of Fort Wayne, father of John Horn of Ossian, died Saturday, Nov. 30, at Englewood Health and Rehab Center in Fort Wayne.
Born in Fort Wayne, he had worked in auto sales at Don Ayres, Heffner Chevrolet and McCormick Chevrolet.
Mr. Horn was a World War II Army veteran.
In addition to the son at Ossian, he is survived by his wife, Helen E.; another son, Mike of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Debbie Judkins of Wolcottville; three sisters, Alice Canfield of Florida, Phyllis Fanger of Fort Wayne and Bonnie Wier of Georgia; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services at 11 a.m. Wednesday will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1910 Hale St., Fort Wayne, with calling one hour before services.
Calling hours also Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 South Fairfield Ave., Fort Wayne. Burial will be in Catholic cemetery.
Memorials to VA Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

Delvia W. Stickler, 89
A retired machinist, Delvia W. Stickler, 89, of Huntington died at 7 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at his home.
Mr. Stickler was a machinist at General Electric for 37 years, retiring in 1978.
He was a member of the Markle United Methodist Church and attended the Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntington, where he sang with both church choirs. He volunteered in Missions in Mexico and was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and the GE Camping Club and the Markle Historical Society. He participated with his wife, Alice, in her bubble show presentations.
Mr. Stickler, a 1931 graduate of Huntington High School, earned both the associate and the bachelor degrees in Biblical studies from the Anchor Theological Seminary in Texarkana, Texas, and served two years with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho and California. He was a member also of the National Amateur Press Association.
He was born in Markle July 3, 1913, a son of Aaron and Velta Brickley Stickler. A first marriage on Aug. 1, 1937 in Markle was to Talitha F. Mounsey, who died Nov. 14, 1985; his second marriage in North Webster on April 23, 1992 was to Alice M. Plasterer Jacobs, who survives.
Additional survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Dan (Marjoria) Dafforn of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Ron (Jane) Helzerman of Riverdale, Mich., and Mrs. Larry (Judith) Park of LaVista, Neb.; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Robert (Patricia) Simmons of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Robert (Juanita) Schaeffer of Milwaukee; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. A sister, a brother and a great-grandson are deceased.
Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Markle United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Allen and Rev. David Arnold officiating. Burial will be in the Markle cemetery.
Calling at Myers Funeral Home Huntington Chapel will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Connie J. Sark, 63
Connie J. Sark, 63, of Fort Wayne, who worked as a hostess at Carlos O’Kellys in Fort Wayne, died at 1:55 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Hospice of Northeast Indiana in Fort Wayne.
She was born in Adams County Nov. 1, 1939 to Thurman and Sarah E. Bebout Douglas. Her father is deceased and her mother survives and resides in Berne.
Surviving also are her husband, William Sark of Fort Wayne, to whom she was married July 5, 1991; her former husband, Alan Bogner of Florida; a son, Greg Bogner of Decatur; three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Jill) Fairchild of Decatur, Mrs. Ricardo (Julie) Morales of Sarasota, Fla., and Mrs. James (Jennifer) Morton of Orlando, Fla.; a stepson, Robert L. Sark of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Ted Douglas of Decatur and Jerry Douglas of Pleasant Mills; a sister, Mrs. Leland (Beverly) Welker of Bemidji, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A grandson is deceased.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Haggard & Sefton Funeral Home in Decatur with Rev. Greg Clark officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery southeast of Berne.
Visitation hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials to Hospice of Northeast Indiana.

Agnes M. Slagle, 75
Mother of John Robert Slagle of Bluffton and Sandy Miller of Craigville, Agnes M. Slagle, 75, of Decatur died at 10:24 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Mrs. Slagle retired in 1986 as a supervisor for United Teck in Lexington, Ohio, and moved to Indiana in 1993.
She was born Oct. 2, 1927 in Brush, Colo., where she spent her childhood before moving to Van Buren, Ind., and finally to Decatur for the last 10 years. She was the daughter of William F. and Martha Yunkon Fisher. Her marriage in 1942 was to John Slagle, who died in 1992.
Surviving, in addition to the son and daughter in Wells County, are two other sons, William F. “Kelly” Slagle of Marion and Michael Slagle of Cleveland, Ohio; another daughter, Jean Simpson of Lincoln, Neb.; a sister, Inez Vermillion of Ignacio, Colo.; a brother, Bill Bennett of Lake Tahoe, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A brother and a sister are deceased.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson Funeral Home in Van Buren, where calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 12 noon until time for services.
Rev. Brad Garrett will officiate and burial will be in Van Buren cemetery.

Carol J. Ehrman, 66
A retired secretary and resident of Berne, Carol J. Ehrman, 66, died at 6:23 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Chalet Village in Berne.
Mrs. Ehrman formerly worked as a secretary for Balsiger Motors in Berne and for Yager Furniture, also in Berne.
She was a member of the the Evangelical Mennonite Church in Berne and a former choir and Ladies Aid member, and member of the Merrier Monday’s Home Economics Club and served for many years as a Cub Scout leader. She was born in Adams County, a daughter of Wilman and Gladys Augsburger Yoder. Her mother survives and resides in Berne. A first marriage was to Leroy Nussbaum, who died in 1988, and her second marriage in Berne on Aug. 3, 1996 was to Hugh Ehrman, who survives.
Additional survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Phillip (Lisa) Martin and Mrs. Gregg (Lana) Gerber, both of Berne; two sons, Gary Nussbaum and Todd Nussbaum, both of Berne; two brothers, Carl and Earl Yoder, both of Berne; a sister, Mrs. Rev. Allen (Gloria) Sprunger of Saginaw, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. A sister is deceased.
A burial committal service will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Mennonite Church cemetery.
Services will follow at the church at 10:30 a.m. Thursday with Rev. Allen Sprunger and Rev. David Bocker officiating.
Memorials to the church’s building fund or to Youth for Christ.

Laurel K. Mattax, 82, of Berne died Monday afternoon, Dec. 2, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center. His wife, Virginia, is among the survivors; Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne.
