LEON A. COOK
TECUMSEH, Mich. – Leon A. Cook, 97, of Tecumseh, formerly of White Pigeon and Klinger Lake, died on Tuesday (May 19, 1998) in Tecumseh Place.
Mr. Cook was born on March 9, 1901, in Florence Township, and married Ethel Kelly on June 2, 1923, in Florence Township. She died July 17, 1997.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William (Eloise) Adams of Tecumseh; two sons, Carlton of Tecumseh and Glen of Three Rivers; 12 grandchildren; 26 great - grandchildren; and one great - great - grandchild. A daughter and two sisters, Lorene Ash and Helen Foust, are deceased.
A White Pigeon resident until 1993, Mr. Cook retired from farming in 1962. He had served as the White Pigeon Township Supervisor for several years and one the board of directors of First Commercial Savings Bank of Constantine for 22 years. He was a member of the Sturgis Elks Club, White Pigeon Masonic Lodge and White Pigeon Presbyterian Church, where he had been an elder.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Couture - Handler Funeral Home in Tecumseh. Friends may also call one hour prior to the 1 p.m. Friday service at White Pigeon Presbyterian Church. Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon is in charge of local arrangements.
Memorials may be given to the church.

BERTHA M. BARNES
ELKHART – The family of Bertha Mae Barnes will receive friends for one hour before the funeral service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mount Sinai Worship Center (formerly Macedonia Church of God in Christ).
The funeral will be at noon Friday at the church, with Bishop Milton Hall, prelate of the First Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ, officiating. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
Mrs. Barnes, 70, of 700 Christian St., died at noon Friday (Feb. 19, 1999) at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born on April 2, 1928, in Chicago, the daughter of Taylor Sr. and Roberta (Williams) Dunn, and graduated valedictorian in 1946 from Wendell Phillips High School. She married Lester Barnes on Feb. 26, 1949, and he died Jan. 23, 1987.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Sonia) Hadley and Mrs. Ronald (Sharon) Martin, both of Elkhart; two sons, Lester D. of Elkhart and Juard of Chicago; 10 grandchildren; five great - grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Hobbs of Indianapolis; and two brothers, Taylor Dunn Jr. of Elkhart and Leon Dunn of Fort Wayne.
In 1973, Mrs. Barnes and her late husband founded the Macedonia Church of God in Christ, which she served in many capacities locally as well as at the district and state level.
Alford’s Mortuary in South Bend is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES E. BLAIR
ELKHART – James E. Blair, 73, of 57698 Roys Ave., died at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 23, 1999) at Elkhart General Hospital.
Arrangements are pending at Walley - Mills - Zimmerman Funeral Home.

PALMER E. CONE
ELKHART – Palmer E. Cone, 81, of 938 E. Beardsley Ave., died at 12:27 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 20, 1999) at Elkhart General Hospital, where he had been a patient since Feb. 12.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Hartzler - Gutermuth - Inman Funeral Home was in charge of cremation arrangements.
Mr. Cone was born on July 27, 1917, in Elkhart, the son of Fred C. and Leona (Palmer) Cone, and graduated from Elkhart High School, Indiana University, Western Michigan University and Fort Wayne Business School. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Gladys Hershberger on Feb. 19, 1954, in Elkhart, and she survives with a daughter, Elizabeth J. Cone - Hohman of South Bend.
Mr. Cone was the science librarian at the University of Notre Dame Library for 15 years, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed music and reading.
Memorials may be given to Habitat for Humanity.

JAMES CRAIG
ELKHART – James Craig, 60, of 23483 Farmington Ave., formerly of Lakeland, Fla., died in his home at 8 p.m. Monday (Feb. 22, 1999).
Born on Dec. 14, 1938, in East Jordan, Mich., Mr. Craig was the son of James and Ruby (Boyer) Craig and a U.S. Navy veteran. He is survived by a brother, Donald of Saginaw, Mich., and two sons, Matthew Scott of Elkhart and Timothy Scott of Goshen.
Friends may call for two hours before the service at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rieth - Rohrer - Ehret Funeral Home in Goshen.
Mr. Craig had been a truck driver for Kercher’s Orchard in Goshen for many years before his retirement.
Memorials may be given to the family or a charity of choice.

RALPH E. WHITE
CASSOPOLIS – Ralph E. White, 75, of 67253 Bulhand St., died after an extended illness at 9:15 p.m. Monday (Feb. 22, 1999) at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1923, in Sikeston, Mo., the son of Joseph R. and Gladys (Hutchason) White, and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and retiring after 28 years of service.
Mr. White married Catherine E. Carlisle on July 19, 1944, in Matthews, Mo., and she survives with two daughters, Rhonda K. Fitts of Edwardsburg and Candace S. Webster of Cassopolis; three sons, Dennis R. and Michael E., both of Elkhart, and Roger E. of Mottville; 10 grandchildren; three great - grandchildren; two brothers, Durwood of Sikeston and Bob of Owensboro, Ky.; and two sisters, Bonnie Bartlett and Mrs. Jack (Lela Jo) Pankey, both of Dexter, Mo. A son, Stephen D., is deceased.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walley - Mills - Zimmerman Funeral Home in Elkhart, where the service will be at noon Friday. The Rev. Paul Brenneman of Northwest Community Church will officiate. A military graveside service will be at Adamsville cemetery.
Mr. White formerly worked at the South Bend Medical Foundation and retired from the former Elkhart Institute of Technology, where he had taught for many years. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19, Elkhart Veterans of Foreign Wars and the 101st Airborne Association.
Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.

LAMOYNE E. SCHUTZ
NILES – LaMoyne E. “Gene” Schutz, 69, of 3161 Redfield Road, died at 2:05 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 23, 1999) at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness.
Mr. Schutz was born on Aug. 31, 1929, in Mishawaka, the son of Leroy D. and Stella F. (Jenkins) Schutz, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
He married Angela M. (Wardlow) Young on Jan. 27, 1973, in Edwardsburg, and she survives with two sons, David E. and John L., both of Elkhart; two daughters, Mrs. George (Kathleen A.) Soncrant of DePere, Wis., and Tammy M. Gard of Edwardsburg; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Carl (Tina M.) Childress of Elkhart; 15 grandchildren; four great - grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Virgil (Marion) Mochel of Wadsworth, Ohio; and one brother, Albert of Honolulu.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walley - Mills - Zimmerman Funeral Home in Elkhart, where the service will be at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Kenneth Seiffertt of St. John United Church of Christ in Woodland will officiate.
A graveside service will be at noon Friday at St. John cemetery, Woodland.
Mr. Schutz was a longtime farmer and had worked at the Selmer Co. in Elkhart for 40 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Elkhart Moose Lodge 599 and American Legion Post 365.
He was also a member of United Auto Workers Local 612, where he served as president and vice president for 20 years, chief steward for six years and served on the bargaining committee.
Memorials may be given to the church.

VINCENT B. TERLEP JR.
ELKHART – A memorial fund at the Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart has been established in the name of former Elkhart resident Vincent B. Terlep Jr.
Mr. Terlep, 52, of Kensington, Md., died on Sunday (Feb. 14, 1999) in his home after suffering a heart attack.

HERSCHEL M. WILLIAMS
Feb. 1, 1909 - Oct. 1, 1999
OSCEOLA – Herschel Melvin Williams, 90, of Vistula Road, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) in Valley View Health Care, Elkhart.
He was born Feb. 1, 1909, in Cass County (Ind.) to Franklin and Myrtle (Stephens) Williams. He married Elizabeth Gyorgyi on Aug. 31, 1932, in South Bend.
She survives with two daughters, Suzanne Pedler of Elkhart and Maxine Frederick of High Point, N.C.; a son, David Williams, and a sister, Mae Buzalski, both of South Bend; one brother, Everett Williams of Mishawaka; nine grandchildren; 15 great - grandchildren; and two great - great - grandchildren. Two brothers, Clyde E. and Edgar Williams, are deceased.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 N. Main St., Mishawaka, where a memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Sheldon Grames of East United Methodist Church will officiate. The body will be donated to the anatomical division of Indiana University in Indianapolis. Memorials may be given to the Indiana University Anatomical Board, Indianapolis.
Mr. Williams was a 1929 graduate of South Bend Central High School and attended Pratt & Whitney Stationary Jet Engine School in Hartford, Conn. For 33 years he was an engineer for I & M Power Co., Twin Branch in Mishawaka, before retiring in 1973. He also was the manager of Independent Concrete Pipe Co., Atlantic & Pacific divisions, for nine years.
Mr. Williams also was the first president of IMCO Credit Union, which he helped organize, and served as treasurer for 10 years. He was a member of the East United Methodist Church.

LOIS C. KENNEDY
April 20, 1930 - Oct. 1, 1999
GOSHEN – Lois C. Kennedy, 69, of 18762 C.R. 20, died at 9:45 a.m. Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at her home. She had been in ill health for 11 months.
She was born April 20, 1930, in Elkhart, to Ora and Cecile (Bratton) Ziegler. She married Robert L. Kennedy on Dec. 13, 1958, in Bristol. He survives with three sisters, Hazel Pickrell of Bristol, and Ilene Mast and Irene Ziegler, both of Goshen; and one brother, Carroll Ziegler of Bristol. A brother, Marvin Ziegler, died in 1996.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Yoder - Culp Funeral Home. Friends also may call one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Monday funeral service at Zion Lutheran Church, Bristol. Pastor Daniel Engber of Zion Lutheran and Pastor Larry Bratton, retired Baptist minister, will officiate.
Mrs. Kennedy retired in 1985 as a business partner with her husband. They operated a construction steel yard in Willows, Calif., where they resided for 15 years. She worked at Northern Indiana Public Service Co. for 10 years and graduated in 1948 from Jefferson High School. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Jefferson Extension Homemakers Club, Maple City Senior Citizens, Elkhart Moose Lodge and Menno Travel Club.
Memorials may be given to Goshen Hospice programs or Zion Lutheran Church.

EULA L. BURKHEAD
Sept. 3, 1909 - Sept. 30, 1999
GOSHEN – Eula Lucile Burkhead, 90, of 20014 C.R. 21, died at 7:20 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 30, 1999) in Wakarusa, at Miller’s Merry Manor, where she resided for three weeks. She was in ill health.
She was born Sept. 3, 1909, in Millersburg, to Floyd and Lela (White) Kurtz. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Terry (Rebecca) Weirick of Goshen and Mrs. Larry (Mona) Gibson of Plano, Texas; one son, Larry (Linda) Burkhead of Goshen; seven grandchildren; and 16 great - grandchildren. One brother, Floyd Kurtz, and two sisters, Bernice Carper and Jean Davis, are deceased.
No visitation is planned. A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. today at North Webster cemetery, where family and friends may gather for the service. Pastor Harry Deppe of the Assembly of God, Elkhart, will officiate. Yoder - Culp Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Burkhead resided at her rural Goshen address since 1982 and previously lived in Sturgis for 20 years. She was a surgical supply supervisor at Columbia Hospital in South Carolina and was a graduate of Millersburg High School. She attended Fort Wayne Business College for two years.

GREGG R. MOORE
ELKHART – Gregg R. Moore, 97, of 59434 C.R. 11, died at 6:20 a.m. Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Irv (Linda) Stender, with whom he lived since May.
Arrangements are pending at Hartzler - Gutermuth - Inman Funeral Home.

CATHERINE J. WARREN
March 2, 1918 - Oct. 1, 1999
ELKHART – Catherine “Cathy” J. Warren, 81, of 2601 Oakland Ave., formerly of Auburn, Ind., died at 2:15 p.m. Friday (Oct. 1, 1999) in Elkhart General Hospital. She was in ill health.
She was born March 2, 1918, in Elkhart, to Jacob W. and Elizabeth P. (Wilson) Kline. She married Fred L. Warren on Oct. 30, 1942, in Elkhart. He died Dec. 21, 1983, in Auburn.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Leo (Sally E.) Harris of Elkhart; two grandchildren; three great - grandchildren; two brothers, Elmo W. Kline of Elkhart and Albert R. Kline of Bristol; and two sisters, Thelmo (ok with the o) W. Anderson and Alberta (ok) F. Donovan, both of Elkhart. Two brothers, Robert Kline and Edward Gross, are deceased, as is a sister, Georgia Rumfelt.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Walley - Mills - Zimmerman Funeral Home, where private family services will be at 1 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Toni Carmer of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn cemetery, Auburn.
Mrs. Warren retired from Eckhart (OK) Public Library in Auburn and previously worked in retail sales. She lived in Auburn for 41 years before moving to Elkhart in January 1993. She was employed with the Elkhart County Council on Aging.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Women of the Moose and Ladies of the Elks, all in Elkhart.
Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association or American Cancer Society.
