Hubert Woodmansee

Hubert Woodmansee, 89, died at 4:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Century Villa Health Care, Greentown. Born May 13, 1910, in Jackson Township, Howard County, he was the son of Grant and Lillian (Hackenbracht) Woodmansee. On Aug. 16, 1930, he married Florence Ballard, who preceded him in death Aug. 6, 1973. On Sept. 12, 1974, he married Ruby Cranor Howell, who preceded him in death Dec. 30, 1983. He was a farmer in Jackson Township, retiring in 1975. He was a former director of First Farmers Bank and Trust, in Converse. He was a member of Converse Church of Christ, and a 47 year member of Greentown Lions Club.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Richard Keyton, Greentown; two stepsons and a step-daughter-in-law, Keith and Dolores Cranor, Marion; Robert Cranor, California; three grandchildren and spouses, Patty and Brian Renbarger, Debbie and Ron Bauer, all of Greentown; Kay and Bryan Chalk, Plymouth; three step-grandchildren and two spouses, Brian and Jamie Cranor, Indianapolis; David and Towana Cranor, Fishers; Steven Cranor, Marion; six great-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by both wives, and one daughter, Patty Arlene Woodmansee.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Hasler-Pickett Funeral Home, Greentown. Rev. Bob Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery, Converse. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Converse Church of Christ or American Cancer Society, Howard County Unit.

Lester Duncan

MARION, Ind. -- Lester Earl Duncan, 79, 729 W. 35th Street, a former resident of Rigdon, died at 7:35 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at Wesleyan Health Care Center. Born July 2, 1920, in Madison County, he was the son of Leslie C. and Maude (Heater) Duncan. On July 12, 1941, he married Irene E. (Jamison) Duncan, who survives.

He retired from Delco Remy in Anderson, and was a member of United Auto Workers Local 662. He attended Rigdon United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of Green Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Rigdon Lions Club. He was also a member of Fairmount Horse Shoe Club.

Surviving are his wife, Irene; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Gene Miller, Russiaville; Karen and Alan Sample, Marion; two sons and daughters-in-law, David C. and Jill Duncan, Cicero; Lester E. "Digger" and Loretta Duncan Jr., Anderson; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Richard and Nedra Duncan, Rigdon; Ralph Duncan, Marion; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Florence Jamison, Rigdon; Jesse and Bob Goetz, Muncie; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mable Duncan, Marion. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Duncan; a sister, Mildred (Mick) Duncan; a daughter-in-law, Laura Duncan.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Rigdon United Methodist Church. Rev. Daniel L. Love and Rev. James Nickles will officiate. Burial will be in Knox Chapel cemetery, Green Township. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Rybolt Funeral Home, 314 W. Washington St., Swayzee. Memorial contributions may be made to Rigdon United Methodist Church, 18909 N. 600 W., Elwood, Ind., 46036, or Rigdon Lions Club.

Jesus ‘Chuy’ Garza

CARMEL, Ind. -- Jesus "Chuy" G. Garza, 82, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at his residence. He had been a chef (cook) for 45 years, retiring in 1981 in Kokomo. He became a U.S. citizen in 1975, but was a resident of the United States since 1943. He was a member of the First Hispanic Baptist Church, Division Road. He was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are his wife, Juanita H.; four sons, Joseph L., Mario H., Rene, Javier Garza; a daughter, Mary Jane Gonzalez; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five brothers, Nicolas, Onofre, Mario, Francisco, Amador Garza; four sisters, Melchora, Amada, San Juana, Maria Luisa.

Services are at 10 a.m. Friday at Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 2126 E. 71st St., Indianapolis. The Rev. Larry Baughman will officiate. Burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Catholic cemetery, Indianapolis. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gerald Hood

Gerald L. Hood, 54, 708 Jeff Drive, died at 3:50 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at his residence. Born Sept. 28, 1944, in Logansport, he was the son of Frank and Margorie (Anghemyer) Hood, of Flora. On July 14, 1967, he married Trudy (Catron) Hood, who survives.

He graduated from Carroll High School. He received a bachelor’s degree from Butler University, and a master’s degree from Ball State. He was a teacher at Northwestern High School Corporation, and a coach of basketball, baseball, and track. He was a member of Judson Baptist Church. He liked to play golf.

Surviving are his wife Trudy; a son, Scott J. Hood, San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Nancy A. Hood, Kokomo; a brother, Dana Hood, Flora; four sisters, Shirley Downhour, Scotsdale, Ariz.; Carol Weise, Lafayette; Linda Langston, Moline, Ill; and Mary Zerkel, Coatesville, Ind.

Services will be 4 p.m. today at Shiloh Methodist Church, 5741 W. 100 N. The Rev. Robert Hammond and LuAnn Hendershot will officiate. Burial will be in Burlington cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4 p.m. today at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Northwestern School Foundation Scholarship Fund. Stout & Son Funeral Home, Russiaville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Alice Adkins

Alice J. Adkins, 53, 2206 E. 00 NS, died at 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at her residence, after a brief illness. Born Feb. 2, 1946, in Sweetwater, Tenn., she was the daughter of D.S. Weaver and Marie (Kellar) Weaver. She was married to Gary D. Adkins Sr., for 32 years, who survives.

She earned her diploma from KHS in 1984. She was an announcer for East Side Little League ball games, and she bowled at Cedar Crest Bowling Lanes for Friday night break away league. She was a homemaker. She frequently did karaoke at Hacienda on Friday nights.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard W. and Melissa G. Adkins, Gary D. Adkins Jr., all of Kokomo; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lora A. and Hoshea Blackamore, Kokomo; Tina L. and Robert E. Yeary Jr., Tipton; a brother and a sister-in-law, John C. and Durece Weaver, Kokomo; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary D. Fraley, Norwalk, Ohio; Betty L. and Al Tyler, Auburn, Maine; five grandchildren, Tyler L. Nix, Kokomo; Dale Ryan Yeary, Tipton; Mikhail E. Blackamore, Kaddie M. Blackamore, both of Kokomo, Christopher L. Nix, of Kokomo, a grandson who was like a son to her. She was preceded in death by a brother.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. Mike Imbler will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Herbert Crabb

CULVER, Ind. -- Herbert L. Crabb, 78, 17001 W. 18th B. Road, died at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend. He had been in failing health for the last nine months. Born Nov. 10, 1920, he was the son of George and Effa Edwards Crabb, who have both preceded him in death. On Feb. 23, 1947, in Rochester, he married Evelyn May Wysong, who survives.

He was a lifelong resident of Culver. He was a World War II U.S. Army infantry veteran of the European Theatre. He was a mechanic and a machinist for the Bendix Corp., South Bend, retiring in 1986. He attended the Argos First Baptist Church and was a former member of the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church, near Leiters Ford. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union, Local #9, South Bend.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters and a son-in-law, Donnabelle and Lester Stotler, Valparaiso; Diana Crabb, West Dundee, Ill.; three sons and a daughter-in-law, David L. and Susan Crabb, Culver; Dale I. Crabb, Culver; Donald A. Crabb, Osceola; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Dorothy Sedan and Nancy Johnston; four brothers, Cecil, Stephan, Nelson, and James Francis Crabb.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church, Argos. Pastor Rob Mace will officiate. Burial will be in Washington cemetery, Culver, with the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars in charge of military graveside services. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Grossman Funeral Home, Argos. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Argos.

Waldemar Gitzbrecht

Waldemar Gitzbrecht, 72, 2351 W. King St., died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, at his residence. Born April 4, 1927, in Zyrardow, Poland, he was the son of Oskar and Klara (Leidner) Gitzbrecht. On Sept. 28, 1957, in Aschaffenburg, Germany, he married Renate Gitzbrecht, who survives. He was retired from the U.S. Army and Chrysler. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict and Vietnam era. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Monica D. Rocheford, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Private family services were held at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home. Rev. Harold Williams officiated. Private entombment was held at Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum.

Ronald Flook

Ronald D. Flook, 63, 917 N. Morrison St., died at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center. Born on Sept. 17, 1935, in Kokomo, he was the son of Charles and Mary (Daulton) Flook. On July 5, 1957, at South Side Christian Church, he married Betty (Cottingham) Flook, who survives.

He graduated from Eastern High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army. He had worked in the service department of Kokomo Gas Co., and retired in 1997 after 31 years of service. He attended Bethany Wesleyan Church and formerly attended Fair View Baptist Church. He was a member of Greentown Masonic Lodge #341 and was past master of the lodge. He was a member of the foresters. He enjoyed camping, fishing and bowling.

Surviving are his wife; his mother, Mary Flook Parsons, Greentown; three daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and David Fink and Vickie and Randy Williams, all of Kokomo; Cheryl and Tom Renshaw, Avon; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Mary Flook, Dover, Tenn.; Donald and Sue Flook, Greentown; a stepbrother and step-sister-in-law, Larry and Jenny Parsons, Indianapolis; a stepsister, Deanna Bolander, Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, Kyler Floor, Eric Fink, Corbin Fink, Ashley Carter, Derek Williams, Morgan Williams, Kayla Renshaw and Nicholas Renshaw. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Flook and his stepfather Larry Parsons.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St. Rev. Donald McDowell will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Garden cemetery, with military services by the Greentown American Legion. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Berteal Snow

Berteal Snow, 73, Summer Trace Nursing Home, Carmel, died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at the facility.

Arrangements are pending at Ellers Mortuary.

Ronald Flook

Hugh McNew

Hugh Donald McNew, 91, Windfall, died at 7:40 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at Autumnwood Extended Care Unit, Tipton County Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 14, 1907 in Nevada, Ind. he was the son of Otto and Rachel (Pugh) McNew. On June 30, 1934, he married Ruth Legg who preceded him in death April 2, 1992.

He retired in 1990 from Union State Bank in Tipton County, where he was a banker. He was a member of Windfall Christian Church, Windfall Lions Club, Masonic Lodge No. 334, OES Rosary Chapter, Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine and Purdue Alumni Association.

Surviving are one daughter, Paula Damman, Lafayette, one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents and wife.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Windfall Christian Church. The Rev. Carl Roudebush will officiate. Burial will be at Brookside cemetery, Windfall. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Windfall Christian Church or Tipton County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Gift Shop for Autumnwood Fund.

James Smith

James (Fred) Smith, 60, 622 Jackson St., Brownsburg, Ind., died at 1:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at his home. Born April 29, 1939 in Monon, he was the son of Clarence L. Smith and Edith O. Overton, who both preceded him in death. He married Wanda M. Hughes, and had resided in Brownsburg for 27 years.

He was a mechanics helper Citizens Gas and Coke Utility for 27 years, and was previously a barber for Eddie Smith’s Barber Shop in Speedway. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1958-1962.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda M. Smith, Brownsburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Richard Harlan, Kokomo; one son, SSGT Randall J. Smith, Korea; one brother, Jerry Smith, Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Norma Curwick, Monon and Julia Perrin, Floral City, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Bryce, Gabriel and Whitney Harlan, Kokomo.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Matthews Mortuary, Brownsburg, Ind. Tony Maynard, Bethesda Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Memory Gardens in Zionsville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Berteal Snow

Berteal Snow, 73, Kokomo died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Summer Trace Nursing Home, Carmel. Born April 8, 1926, in Ellisville, Miss., she was the daughter of Charles and Lucille (Pace) Brown. On Dec. 25, 1949, she married Orville D. Snow in Kokomo, who proceeded her in death April 13, 1994.

She retired from Delco Electronics in 1978 after 30 years of service. She was a member of New Life Assembly of God Church and a member of UAW Local 292.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Maureen Snow, Carmel; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Byron and Puett, Kokomo; six grandchildren, Marcie Puett, Dawn and Sam Lewis, Beth Puett, Holly Snow, Lori Snow and John Snow; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Eloise and Paul Hillman, Kokomo and Burnelle Grooms, Kokomo.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at Ellers Mortuary, 725 S. Main St. The Rev. Don Gifford will officiate. Burial will be at Sunset Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Willie Cannon

Willie Mae Cannon, 62, 1113 North LaFountain St., died at 11:42 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at SCCI Hospital. She was born Feb. 28, 1937.

Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memory Garden and Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road. The Rev. Lee will officiate. Entombment will be in Kokomo Memorial Park. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until the service at the funeral home.

Merritt Whybrew

PERU, Ind. - Merritt Leon Whybrew, 71, R.R. 5, Peru, died 4:42 a.m. Friday, Aug., 13, 1999, in St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Allen Funeral Home, 115 S. Elm St., Bunker Hill. Pastor Bill Shewman and Pastor Charles Layne will officiate. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park in Cass County. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
