William 'Bill' Hughes

William D. "Bill" Hughes, 69, 1216 Imperial Drive, died at 5:20 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Sycamore Village Health Care. Born Aug. 4, 1931, in Kokomo, he was the son of Emerson and Ann (Moss) Hughes. On June 15, 1949, he married Barbara Hughes, who died April 29, 1999.

He had worked as a city bus driver and at Continental Steel, and also was self-employed as an antique dealer. He was a past member of the Moose Lodge and a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church.

Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Gail Moore-Walters and Joe Walters, and April Fuller, all of Kokomo; a son, William Joseph David Hughes, Kokomo; six grandchildren, Wendy Williams, August and Shannon Hughes, Leslie and Michael Moore and Kyle Fuller; a great-grandchild, Lindsey Smith; a sister, Judy Keegan, Kokomo; a sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Earl Cowsert, Kokomo; aunt and uncle, Josephine and Lawrence Merrick, Kokomo; several nieces and nephews and a good friend Joe Correll, Kokomo. He was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Joe Hughes.

Services are 11 a.m. today at Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St. The Rev. Doug Dameron will officiate. Burial will be in Albright cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of the service today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Catherine Hosler

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Catherine L. Hosler, 75, 14300 W. Bell Road, Apt. 262, died at 12:20 a.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Sun Health Hospice, Sun City West, Ariz. Born Nov. 3, 1925, in Monticello, she was the daughter of Roy and Ruth (Hamilton) Haas. On Oct. 14, 1944, in Logansport, she married George T. Hosler, who preceded her in death on Oct. 9, 1995.

Surviving are a daughter, Sandra K. Dixon, Surprise, Ariz.; a son, Michael G. Hosler, Kokomo; four sisters, Dorothy Trapp, Monticello; Carol Todd, Idaville; Phyllis Leader, Monticello; Patty Widner, Zephyrhills, Fla. and five grandchildren, Jeffery, Nicole, Jennifer, Maci and Michael Hosler. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and granddaughter.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at McCloskey-Hamilton-Gundrum Funeral Home, 1603 E. Broadway, Logansport, Ind. The Rev. James Jacobs will officiate. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park cemetery, Logansport. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite church or hospice.

Scott Johnson

Scott W. Johnson, 83, Kokomo, died at 2:25 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at his youngest daughters home in Kokomo. Born May 14, 1917, in Sharps Chapel, Tenn., he was the youngest of 14 children, and the son of Benjamin and Sarah Beason Johnson. On Nov. 27, 1938, in Kokomo, he married Mary Ellen Wright.They had been married 62 years. She survives.

He worked at Continental Steel Corporation for 27 years as a rigger. He farmed and was an insurance agent for American Family Insurance. He owned the Johnson Insurance Agency on North Phillips Street from 1972 to 1981. He was a charter member of the Alto Road Church of Christ and a former deacon. He was a former member of the Golden Agers Club. He loved his family dearly.

Surviving are his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Marilyn Johnson, Kokomo; Steve and Vicky Johnson, Las Vegas, Nev.; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Judith A. Black, Nancy and Max Ehrman and Cindy and Roy Prough, all of Kokomo; Kathy Simpson, Galveston; 21 grandchildren, Kathie Gee, Laurie Beahrs, David Black, Doug Black, Amy Black, Angela McKinley, Stephanie Johnson, Tim Simpson, Suzanne Davis, Kristie Simpson, Brent Ehrman, Luann Helvie, Tammy Scott, Trace Heavilin, Tony Johnson, Troy Johnson, Todd Johnson, Jill Boyce, Barbara Horton, Wesley Johnson and Mandy Schave, and 24 great-grand children. He was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel and James Michael Johnson; a grandson, Tom Simpson and six sisters and seven brothers.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Alto Road Church of Christ, 600 E. Alto Road. Mr. Lynn Brust will officiate. Entombment will be in Sunset Memory Garden Mausoleum. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Alto Road Church of Christ Building Fund in his memory. Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., is in charge of the arrangements.

Julia Meritt

Julia F. Meritt, 87, 603 St. Joseph Drive, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Saint Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis. Born Jan. 20, 1914, in New Richmond, she was the daughter of James L. and Zora (Magruder) Hornbeck. On April 9, 1939, in New Richmond, she married Olin Meritt, who died March 8, 1960.

She was a 1932 graduate of New Richmond High School. She was employed for 47 years by Kokomo Center Township Schools, retiring in June 1997. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #498 of New Richmond, where she was a past Worthy Matron. She enjoyed her family, her many friends, and her bridge clubs.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen M. Thomas and her husband Jeffery S. Taylor, Chicago; Elaine S. and David K. Needham, Kokomo; Pamela A. and James M. Burt, Fort Wayne; five grandchildren, Kristi Severns and husband Craig, Kokomo; Carrie A. Eaker, New Castle; Gretchen Thomas, San Francisco, Calif.; Mark Needham and wife Angie, Melbourne, Fla.; Meridith G. Burt, Canon City, Colo; four great-grandchildren, Ryan Eaker and wife Jen, Crown Point; Kyle and Courtney Eaker, both of New Castle; David A. Needham, Melbourne, Fla. and a step great-grandson, Cameron Leet, Melbourne, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Hugh M. Hornbeck, and a sister, Ina E. Petry.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Fenn & Shirley Mortuary, Colonial Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road. The Rev. Dr. Gary Forbes will officiate. A committal service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Oakland cemetery, New Richmond with Mrs. Velma Keesling officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 8 today at the funeral home, where an Eastern Star Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 219 W. Mulberry St., Kokomo, 46901, for the roof repair fund, and/or to the American Red Cross, 210 W. Walnut St., Kokomo, 46901, for the bloodmobile program.

Joyce Keer

Joyce C. Keer, 78, Kokomo, and formerly of Highland and Monticello, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at her home. Born March 14, 1923, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Charles and Fern Crossman. In 1943, she married William Hermann, who died in 1965. In 1970, she married John M. Keer, who died Aug. 3, 1995.

She was a graduate of Hammond High School and Chicago Business College. She retired from Beatty Machine and Manufacturing where she worked as the assistant secretary treasurer. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary #1109 and American Legion Auxiliary, Post 81, both in Monticello; St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Kokomo, and the Altar and Rosary Society at the church. She was a also a member of Kokomo Senior Citizens.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Leaynn and Terry Dalton, Kokomo; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Cassandra Hermann, Alpine, Calif., and a granddaughter, Alicia Hermann, also of Alpine, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husbands; a son; a brother and a grandson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 900 S. Purdum St. with Father Dennis O'Keeffe the celebrant. Burial will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Schererville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St., where there will be a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. A committal service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Ave., Schererville, with an hour of calling prior to the service. (The funeral home is located one mile south of Ind. 30.) Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Joseph Hospice, 400 N. Main St., Kokomo, 46901.

Norma King

Norma J. King, 106 Cornada Circle, Kokomo, died at 3:21 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Howard Community Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Fenn & Shirley Mortuary, Colonial Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road.

Madge Garber

PERU -- Madge M. Garber, 95, Dukes Continuing Care, formerly of R. R. #5, died at 5:25 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the facility.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Allen Funeral Home, 105 W. Third St., Peru. Pastor Larry Brandon and Chaplain Steve Fleck will officiate. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery, Bunker Hill. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.

Gresley, Raymond G., services at 10 a.m. today at St. Joan of Arc Church.

Sue Angle

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Sue Ellen Conner Angle, 58, went home to be with the Father at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2001, at St. John's Regional Health Center. Born May 17, 1942, in Tipton Township, she was the daughter of Samuel M. and Mary A. Conner. On Jan. 6, 1962, in New Waverly, she married James R. Angle.

She was a graduate of Tipton Township High School in Onward, and attended Ball State University. She was a member of the Brady Lane Church of Christ in Lafayette for many years prior to moving to Thompson, Ga., in the late 1980's. They then relocated to Springfield, Mo, , in June, 1991. She was always sharing her Christian love and sense of humor with family, friends and anyone that she met on this life's journey. Her faith never faltered through all the years of illness. Even in illness, she was always brightening someone else's life. Her love and caring were evident in her work at Brady Lane and volunteer work with the Tippecanoe Council on Aging. She was co-founder, officer and was considered one of the top counselors for a not-for-profit crisis intervention center in Indiana during the early 1980's.

Surviving are her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, J. Shawnn and Pamela Angle, rural Cass County; daughters Kelly Sue Morris and Wendy Heather Angle, Springfield; her beloved grandchildren, Brandon, Brooke, Brody, Breanna, Taylor, Tyler and Conner; her mother-in-law, . Marcella Angle, Logansport, Ind.; brother-in-law, Steven F. Angle, Tulsa, Okla., and many friends and relatives across this great land. She was preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law, Frederick Angle; grandson Bradley, and a brother, Harry Lee Conner.

The family would like to express their thanks to the dialysis technician at the Kidney Disease Center of the Ozarks, Dr. Michael North and staff; Dr. Wade Jordan and the nursing staff of Five North and the MICU of St. John's Hospital.

A private family farewell will be held today, with cremation following under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, 1947 E. Seminole, Springfield, Mo. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Lafayette, Ind., with inurnment at the Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens, West Lafayette, Ind.

Those who so desire may contribute to the Kidney Disease Center of the Ozarks, 1675 A. E. Seminole, Springfield, Mo, , 65804; Children's Miracle Network % Cox Health Systems, 3525 S. Sandra Hinkle

KEMPTON -- Sandra "Sandy" K. Hinkle, 56, 311 Pike St., died at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis. Born Feb. 9, 1945, in Kokomo, she was the daughter of Edith (Silvers) and Earl L. DeWeese Sr. On Feb. 27, 1972, in Winter Haven, Calif., she married Glenn R. Hinkle Sr., who survives.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed computers, playing bingo and spending time with her family.

Surviving are her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin L. and Loriane Hughes, Monterey; Glenn R. and Lori Hinkle Jr., Sharpsville; three daughters and spouses, Kim Hughes and Gregg Ruane and Sherri and Christopher Haskett, all of Kokomo; Glenda R. Hinkle, Kempton; a brother, Earl L. DeWeese, Kokomo; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Connie S. and Jose Frias, Sharpsville; Linda L. Miller, Kokomo; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. The Rev. George Reprogle will officiate. Burial will be in Kempton cemetery, Kempton. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the funeral home before the service on Monday.

Edward Huddleston

Edward Huddleston, 68, 2233 W. Jefferson St., Kokomo, died at 2:43 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2001, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center. Born March 26, 1933, in Kentucky, he was the son of T.E. and Verdie (Kinney) Huddleston.

Surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Ruby Jewel and Dewey Dennis, Louisville, Ky.; three brothers, Alfred Huddleston, New Albany, Ind.; Tommy Huddleston Jr., Kentucky, and Joe Huddleston, South Carolina.

Services are 1 p.m. Monday at the Kokomo Rescue Mission, 321 W. Mulberry St. Ron Visse will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Point cemetery. Friends may call one hour before the service on Monday at the Rescue Mission. Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Norma King

Norma June King, 78, 106 Coronada Circle, Kokomo, died at 3:21 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Howard Community Hospital. Born Dec. 7, 1922, in Kokomo, she was the daughter of Floyd Harry and Lelah Vivien (Pickering) Bender. In 1945 in Oklahoma City, Okla., she married Walton Lee Stevens, who preceded her in death. She later married John Robert King, who died March 2, 1982.

She graduated from Kokomo High School in 1942, In her youth she enjoyed roller skating and harmonizing with her family and friends. She also enjoyed needlework of all types. She formerly worked for Haynes Stellite during World War II in the wax department, at at Delco Radio from 1950 to 1957. She and her family moved to Mobile, Ala. and in 1961 moved to Downey, Calif. She was very dexterious and was selected to wire and solder, and due to her small stature she was selected to work in many confined spaces. She was chosen to work on the nose cones of the Apollo Space Craft, the Minute Man Missiles and several space shuttles. She was head of the Safety Commission at work for seven years and had won many suggestion awards for saving the company time and money on many projects. She finally retired in 1991 from Rockwell International at Seal Beach, Calif. after 30 years of service. She also had worked at Hughes Aircraft and Edwards Laboratories in Irvine, Calif.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Marquitta Joy and William Mealer and Denise Rae Flynn and Randy Bough, all of Kokomo; four grandchildren and spouses, Parrisha Ellen Miller and husband Bruce, Melissa Denise Fletcher and husband Clarence, and Brian Wesley Flynn and his fiancee Jamie, all of Kokomo; Aysha Chantel Guffey and husband Jason of Rossville; seven great-grandchildren, William Austin Mealer, Jacob Eugene Guffey, Joshua Scott Guffey, Taylor Alexander Mealer, Nicholas Bruce Mealer, Brooke Ellen Mealer and Kyle Wesley Flynn; four sisters, Helen Adair Helfrich, Washington Courthouse, Ohio; Florene Kelly, Osage Beach, Mo.; Barbara Jean Adler and husband Donald, and Carolyn Joan Hewitt, all of Kokomo; two brothers and wives, Malcolm Floyd Bender and wife Della Jean, Kokomo; Charles Richard Bender and wife Shirley Ann, Lafayette, and a faithful brother-in-law, Benjamin T. King, San Francisco. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a son, David Lee Stevens; two brothers, Troy N. and Bobby Lee Bender; two sisters, Opal M. Purvis and Marsha L. Bender; three granddaughters, Kristen Marie Mealer, Ashley Rennee Mealer, Andrea Rose Mealer; two grandsons, Robert Franklin Mealer and James Arlen Mealer; two great-granddaughters, Alicia Marie Guffey and Shelby Nichole Guffey, and a great-grandson, Dakota Scott Fletcher.

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Fenn & Shirley Mortuary, Colonial Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road. The Rev. Douglas Shoemaker of Westfield will officiate. Burial will follow in Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Howard County Unit, 1150 S. Dixon Road, Kokomo, 46902 or to a church of the donor's choice.

Ruth Miller

AMBOY -- Ruth I. Miller, 80, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center, Kokomo.

Arrangements are pending at Laird Funeral Home, Amboy.

Charles Lay

Charles Marion Lay, 70, Kokomo, died at 3:55 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, at SCCI Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at Ellers Mortuary.

Sean McDowell

MONTICELLO -- Sean Michael McDowell, 29, died at 6:58 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Home Hospital, Lafayette. Born March 14, 1972, in Kokomo, he was the son of Michael and Karen (Edging) McDowell.

He graduated from Carroll High School in 1990 and from Purdue University in 1996 with an associate degree in computer programming. He liked football and basketball and enjoyed the computer very much.

Surviving are his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Tina and Tom Cole, Fort Worth, Texas; grandparents, Maxine and Carleton Cory, Flora and Wayne and Jacque Edging, Camden. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Alex Cole, and a grandfather, Robert McDowell.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Neptune Funeral Home, 44 Michigan Road, Burlington. Pastors Wes Brookshire and Ray Squibb will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Lawn cemetery, Flora. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
