Robert Kelly

Robert Garth Kelly, 73, 205 Yale Blvd., died at 5:51 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2001, at his residence. Born May 17, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of William Harry and Mary Yvonne (Wagner) Kelly. On Aug. 28, 1954, in Plymouth, Wisc., he married Joyce Ann Matschnig, who survives.

He was assigned to the U.S.S. Coral Sea while serving in the U.S. Navy from 1947 to 1951. He graduated in 1958 with a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He served General Motors Corporation in their AC Spark Plug, AC Delco and Delco Electronics Divisions, retiring in 1992 as a program manager in electrical engineering, after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1152; Elks Lodge #190; Isaac Walton League; National Rifle Association; the Kokomo Engineering Society and the Rotary Club of Kokomo. He had served on the Western School Board and the Kokomo Symphony Board.

Surviving are his wife; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dean Mark and Christi G. Kelly, Lafayette; Patrick Timothy and Darlene Kelly, Kokomo; five daughters and sons-in-law, Molly (Susan Jean) and Peter Haas, Plano, Texas; Mary Lynn Kelly, Galveston; Kathleen Ann Kelly, Ann Marie and Scott Freeman, and Kristi Lee and Joseph Short, all of Kokomo; eight grandchildren, Matthew S. Jones, Colin M. Haas, Ian Robert Kelly, Patrick J. Kelly, Madeline E. Haas, Audrey M. Freeman, Connor J. Short and Andrew S. Freeman; two sisters, Delores "Sue" Givens, Ashburn, Va. and Patricia Kelly, Toledo, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul Kelly, and a grandson, Paul Alan Freeman.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Fenn & Shirley Mortuary, Colonial Chapel, 1315 W. Lincoln Road. The Rev. Fr. Dennis J. O'Keeffe and the Rev. James Jacobs will officiate. Cremation will follow the service. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kokomo Park Band Endowment Fund and/or the Kokomo Symphonic Society. Contribution envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

G. Virginia Hawkins

TIPTON -- G. Virginia Hawkins, 71, 604 N. Independence St., died at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, May 27, 2001, at her residence. Born Jan. 10, 1930, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Paul H. and Martha K. (Maxwell) Graham. On July 28, 1949, she married William A. Hawkins, who survives.

She graduated from Tipton High School in 1947. She was a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of Kemp United Methodist Church, Tipton; a 50-year member of the America Legion Auxiliary and the Women of the Moose, both in Tipton.

Surviving are 10 children, Mike, Jim and Steve Hawkins, Kathy Murphy and Lisa Plake, all of Tipton; Mark Hawkins, Marysville, Wash.; Lynn Cunniff, North Carolina; Joe Hawkins, Fishers; Rich Hawkins, Japan, and Rob Hawkins, Salt Lake City, Utah; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, June Brooks, Middletown; Betty Boone, Kirklin; a brother, Robert Graham, Tipton. She was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Porter Funeral Home, 726 E. North St., Tipton. Pastor John Hogsett will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

E. Michael Gancsos

SHARPSVILLE -- E. Michael Gancsos, 45, 108 Tumbleweed Drive, died at 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Saint Joseph Hospital & Health Center. Born Jan. 6, 1956, in Dayton, Ohio, he was the son of Ernest and Meda Marcella (Shadowens) Gancsos Sr. On April 25, 1975, in West Carrollton, Ohio, he married Lolette Laureen Roney, who survives.

He graduated in 1978 suma cum laude with an electrical engineering degree from the University of Dayton, earning the 1978 Horvath-Steger Award. He was employed at Delphi Delco Electronics for 22 years, the last 16 as an engineering team leader. He served as a delegate to the Indiana Republican State Convention in 1982. He had served as a deacon at the Indian Heights Baptist Church of Kokomo since 1999. He was a leader in AWANA children's ministries for the last 12 years.

Surviving are his wife; his parents of West Carrollton, Ohio; a son, Andrew Michael Gancsos; two daughters, Sherah Lolette and Charlotte Hannah Gancsos, all of Sharpsville; a sister, Marla Donelle Hartzell, Dayton, Ohio; two nieces and three nephews.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Indian Heights Baptist Church, 346 S. 00 E.W., Kokomo. The Rev. Jerry Adamson will officiate. Burial will be in Sharpsville cemetery. There is no planned calling. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the general fund of AWANA Club International, c/o Rick Glover, 4907 Council Ring Blvd., Kokomo, 46902. Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Irene Downing

TIPTON -- Irene Downing, 92, 1000 S. Main St., died at 2:08 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Autumnwood, Tipton County Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 11, 1909, in Tipton County, she was the daughter of Joseph M. and Blanche (McIntire) Ploughe. She was married to Dallas Wright, who preceded her in death. On Aug. 14, 1959, she married Mark E. Downing, who died Sept. 17, 1992. She worked for several years at Perfect Circle, Tipton, and was a sales associate at Danners in Tipton and Wassons in Kokomo. She was a member of Meridian Street Christian Church, Greentown and attended South Side Christian Church, Kokomo. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Rosary Chapter #66 in Tipton.

Surviving are a step-daughter, Betty Savage, Kokomo; step-son, Tom Wright, Frankfort; a sister, Lucy Moeller, Tipton; four grandchildren, Jill Savage, Indianapolis; Tod and Tim Wright, both of Forest; Pam Rader, Florida, and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands and two brothers, Clayton and Maurice Ploughe.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home, 216 W. Jefferson St., Tipton. The Rev. Steve Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Normanda cemetery, Tipton County. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Cleta Berry

Cleta M. Berry, 94, formerly of Kokomo, died at 9:50 a.m. Monday, May 28, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Collierville, Tenn. Born May 30, 1906, in Waupecong, she was the daughter of Andrew and Stella (Glassburn) Shrock. On Dec. 22, 1928, she married Paul H. Berry, who died Nov. 25, 1976.

She was a graduate of Clay Township High School and received her teaching certificate from Ball State Teachers College. She taught in the Kokomo school district at Washington and Palmer Elementary Schools. She was also a homemaker. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star #89, where she was a past worthy matron and past district deputy; was a founding member of Highland Park Church and taught adult Sunday school there for more than 35 years. Then she took residence in Collierville, Tenn., where she was a member and teacher at the United Methodist Church of Collierville.

Surviving are a son, Paul Berry, Kokomo; a daughter, Yolanda Snyder, Collierville, Tenn.; two sisters, Dorothea Littler, Syracuse, Ind.; Evelyn Lavrenz, Plainfield; five grandchildren, Debby, David and Daniel Berry; Scott and Brent Snyder; three great-grandchildren, Olivia and Adam Berry and Ryan Snyder. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Miriam Rody and Virginia Shrock; two brothers, Dr. Ethan Shrock and Dr. Robert Shrock, and a daughter-in-law, Dorothy Berry.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. Pastor Harold Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Point cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

James Worthy

James Worthy, 58, Kokomo, died at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital, Indianapolis.

Arrangements are pending at at Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel.

Robert Jackson Jr.

Robert T. "Razz" Jackson Jr., 73, 2905 W. Sycamore St. (Sycamore Village) died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the facility. Born April 26, 1928, in Fort Wayne, he was the son of Robert T. Jackson Sr. and Mary L. Artist Thompkins.

He was a graduate of Kokomo High School. He retired from Foster Forbes Glass Co. in Marion after 15 years. He was a member of Wilson Lodge #12; Consisery 12; Royal Arkes; Elks Lodge; American Legion #177; Black Dragon Motorcycle Club and the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed roller skating, fishing, photography, motorcycle riding and car detailing.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy Odell and Marla Jackson; Robert T. III and Tracy Jackson; Aaron Ray and Cynthia Jackson; four daughters, Marcia L. Walker; Diane L. Spruill; Athena M. Miller and Allen West; Roseellen Love; a sister, Billie P. Hunter; grandchildren, Robert Eric Stanley, Devin C. Spruill, Michelle Miller, Allen Miller II, Khala Miller, Timothy O. Jackson II, Shanna Jackson, Jarrett Jackson, Roderick Love, Jessica Jackson, Jaylen Jackson, Jonathan Hill, Aaron Jackson II, Jordan Jackson and Jalisa Jackson; two step brothers, John A. and Odell Tompkins; a step sister, Leona Stewart, and a special cousin, Joan Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, James Robert Jackson.

Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Historic Wayman Chapel, 920 N. Apperson Way. The Rev. Phillip Carroll will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel, where Masonic rites will be said at 7 p.m.

James 'Jim' Worthy

James L. "Jim" Worthy, 58, Kokomo, died at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Indianapolis. Born Feb. 16, 1943, in Kokomo, he was the son of August "Jack" and Matilda (Toney) Worthy.

He had served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kittyhawk. He was a lifelong carpenter. He was a member of the Isaak Walton League and enjoyed hunting, fishing and ceramics.

Surviving are his companion of 18 years, Arlie Norris, Kokomo; his companion's children, Larry Norris II and John Norris, both of Kokomo; Davina Norris, Marion; sisters, Avery Canik, Titisville, Fla.; June Faye Quillen, Donna Gay Creviston and Deena Lou Crawford, all of Kokomo; two brothers, Gene and John Worthy, both of Titisville, Fla.; a special friend, Terry Turner, Kokomo, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Worthy.

Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary, Main Street Chapel, 725 S. Main St. The Rev. George Reprogle will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Point cemetery with military rites. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Vera Rutherford

Vera Pauline Rutherford, 91, 3525 W. Jefferson St., Kokomo, died at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Howard Community Hospital. Born April 27, 1910, in Cass County, she was the daughter of Harry Willard and Lennie Catherine (Cassingham) Eckley. She was married to John S. Rutherford, who preceded her in death on Oct. 23, 1988.

She graduated from Kokomo High School in 1928. She was a homemaker and a member of the former Beamer Methodist Church, where she had been a member of the Women's Society. She was presently a member of Bible Baptist Church.

Surviving are four sons and three daughters-in-law, William E. and Joan Rutherford and Dale E. and Cinda Rutherford, all of Kokomo; Richard V. Rutherford, Branson West, Mo.; Jerry W. and Ruth Rutherford, Springfield, Mo.; 12 grandchildren, John H. Rutherford; Judy Rutherford; William "Bill" Rutherford; Becky Hudson; Rick Rutherford; Randy Rutherford; Jani Adams; Brent Rutherford; Andrea Rutherford Hamilton; Lisa Hemsworth; Debbie Johnson; Tim Rutherford; 11 great-grandchildren, Aaron Hudson; Kyle Rutherford; Ryan Rutherford; Caitlyn Rutherford; Chelsea Rutherford; Olivia Rutherford; Amanda Rutherford; Nicole Hemsworth; Brianna Hemsworth; Katherine Rutherford; Loren Rutherford; a brother-in-law, Glenn Dwiggins, Kokomo, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Josephine Dwiggins and Louise Harper.

Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Stout & Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., Russiaville. The Rev. Dan Johnson and Tim Rutherford, her grandson, will officiate. Burial will be in Galveston cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Linda Kay Waddelow

GREENTOWN -- Linda Kay (Scott) Waddelow, 54, of Greentown, died at 1:25 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Tipton County Memorial Hospital. She was born July 12, 1947, in Kokomo, daughter of R. May and Dorrena R. (Featherstone) Scott. On May 20, 1967, at Galveston's Upper Deer Creek United Church of Christ, she married Larry Waddelow Sr. Pastor Chet Perkins officiated the marriage ceremony.

She was a 1965 graduate of Lewis Cass High School. She was a homemaker, and an active member of Rainbow of Walton. She also was involved in Howard County 4-H, and was a supporter of Eastern High School athletics (Go Comets!). She was a very special mother and babysitter to many people over the years.

Surviving are her husband, Larry Waddelow, Greentown; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Kent and Heather Waddelow, Sharpsville, Keith Waddelow, Columbia City, Kurt Waddelow, Noblesville; one daughter, Kim Waddelow, Greentown; one granddaughter, Aubrey Lauren Waddelow, Sharpsville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Fred Raderstorf, Galveston, Nancy and Max Elliott, Lucerne; one brother and sister-in-law, Max Lee and Rebecca Scott, Bedford; father, R. Max Scott, Galveston; maternal grandfather, Howard Featherstone, Kokomo; three foreign exchange students, Thomas Mortenson, Alex Kerston, Tom Jensen; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorrena (Featherstone) Scott in 1998.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hasler-Pickett Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown. Pastor Rick Morris will officiate. Burial will be at the Forks of the Creek cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Howard County 4-H Exhibit Association and Eastern High School Athletics.

Orville Stover

Orville A. Stover, 85, Kokomo, formerly of Dunedin, Fla., died at 5 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital and Health Care Center.

Arrangements are pending at Ellers Mortuary, Webster Street Chapel.

Paul E. Etherington

Paul E. Etherington, 83, 6571 West Road 600 South, Russiaville, died at his residence at 5 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001. Born April 16, 1918, in West Middleton, he was the son of the late George and Adeline "Addie" (Lincoln) Etherington. On Aug. 21, 1949, at Russiaville United Methodist Church, he married Mary H. (Watson) Etherington, who survives.

He graduated from West Middleton High School in 1936 and from Purdue University in 1937 after completing a short course in agriculture. He was a lifelong farmer.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946, where he served in Europe and Le Havre France during World War II. He received an American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Eame Theater Ribbon, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Ribbon and Victory Medal.

He was a lifelong member of West Middleton United Methodist Church, 50-year member of Farm Bureau, member of the American Legion, member of the Purdue Alumni Association and a former 4-H Leader in Howard County. He was an avid coin and arrowhead collector. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, one son and daughter-in-law, David and Rhonda Etherington, Russiaville, two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Michel Rockwell, Middletown, and Becky and Lewis Beeman, Elwood, grandchildren, Mindy Dunn and her husband Richie, Kokomo and Chad Etherington, Russiaville, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one grandson.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stout and Son Funeral Home, 200 E. Main Street, Russiaville. The Rev. Steve Cole will officiate. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Kokomo. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by VFW Post 1152. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Russiaville United Methodist Church's building fund. Envelopes are provided at the funeral home.

Winifred Bishop

FLORA -- Winifred N. Bishop, 88, of Park Row, Flora, died at 5:46 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Health Care in Delphi. Born Aug. 3, 1912, in Howard County near Kokomo, she was the daughter of William J. Norton and Sarah E. Locke. On March 1, 1929, in Peru, she married Arthur Dick Bishop, who died Nov. 11, 1978.

She graduated from Kokomo High School in 1930. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Psi Iota XI, both of Flora, and of the Howard County chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. She attended Flora Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Molly Hussein, Flora; four sons, Dick N. Bishop, Daniel G. Bishop and Michael D. Bishop, all of Flora, and Thomas W. Bishop, Palm Coast, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters.

There will be a private graveside service at Maple Lawn cemetery. The Rev. Charles Compton will officiate. Memorials may be made to Flora Presbyterian Church or Flora-Monroe Township Library.
