Elmer E. Griffin

Oct. 4, 1914 - April 5, 1999

Lt. Col. Elmer E. Griffin (U.S. Army Retired), 84, of Cape Coral, Fla., died on Monday, April 5, at the Coral Trace Manor Nursing Home in Cape Coral.

The son of Dale and Susan (Karr) Griffin, he was born in Flat River, Mo., on Oct. 4, 1914. He graduated from Creighton University in 1938 and joined the U.S. Army that same year.

While in the service he married his wife, Sally Anne Keller in 1953. He retired from the Army in 1959 and received his Master's degree from Purdue University. Mr. Griffin moved to Punta Gorda, Fla., in 1967, was a teacher at Port Charlotte High School for ten years, and later moved to Sanibel, Fla. He was a resident of Cape Coral for the past 13 years, and was a member of the American Legion. He had been a former resident of Culver, Ind.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Sally of Cape Coral.

The funeral service and interment will be officiated by Rev. William Schiller at Riverside Memorial cemetery in Monterey, Ind., at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 9. Veteran rites will be conducted at the graveside.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to a humane society of choice.

The Bonine Funeral Home, Culver, is in charge of arrangements.

Florence E. Hagenbush

July 8, 1927 - April 5, 1999

Florence E. Hagenbush, 71, of 1510 Catherwood Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 8 a.m. on Monday, April 5, at her residence. She had been in failing health for a year.

She was born on July 8, 1927, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Eric and Agnes (Johnson) Carlson, who both preceded her in death. She had lived in the South Bend area since 1961, coming from Argos, Ind., where she had resided for 12 years. On March 19, 1949, in Minneapolis, she married Robert LeRoy Hagenbush, who preceded her in death on May 29, 1997. She was also preceded in death by a infant daughter, Christy; and by a son, Robert in 1982.

She retired from Kroger's Ireland Road store in 1966, and she was also a homemaker. Her hobbies included reading, puzzles and flower gardens. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, Plymouth, Ind.

She is survived by a daughter, Miss Cheryl Hagenbush of South Bend; a son, Richard Hagenbush of South Bend, and his fiancee, Amy Heyboer of Knox, Ind.; a granddaughter, Karen (Thomas) Edwards of Mentone, Ind.; a great - grandson, Colton Edwards of Mentone; and by a sister, Edith Carlson, and a brother, Evert Carlson, both of Minneapolis.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, at the Grossman Funeral Home, Argos, with Pastor Peter Wardlow officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from an hour prior to services on Thursday. Burial will be in the Maple Grove cemetery, Argos.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Flossie E. Keller

May 20, 1920 - April 5, 1999

Flossie E. Keller, 86, of South 25th Street, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 5 a.m. on Monday, April 5, at the home of her granddaughter in Longwood, Fla. She had resided with her granddaughter for the past four months.

She was born on May 20, 1912, in South Bend, to the late Milton and Alta (Casper) Wrigley, and had lived in South Bend all of her life. She was also preceded in death by a son, John M. Keller, who passed away on Nov. 30, 1990; and by a granddaughter, Cynthia Ann Keller.

She was the owner and operator of Flossie Keller's Beauty Shop for 56 years.

She is survived by a granddaughter and her husband, Sandra (Richard ) Keller Johnson of Longwood; two great - grandsons, Adam Keller Johnson and Noah J. Johnson, both at home in Longwood; a sister Vivian M. Freed of Elkhart, Ind.; a nephew, David Freed of Mishawaka, Ind.; and by a niece, Susan Buckley of Elkhart.

Services for Mrs. Keller will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 9, in the River Park United Methodist Church. Rev. Phil Abrams, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at Highland cemetery, South Bend.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday in the Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Flossie was a longtime member of the the River Park United Methodist Church, to which memorial contributions may be made.

Ruth A. Madsen

May 24, 1906 - April 4, 1999

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, at the Kewanna Church of Christ, with viewing one hour before the services, and from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 7, at the Harrison - Metzger Funeral Home, Kewanna, for Ruth A. Madsen, 92. Rev. Ron Prilliman, Heritage Christian Church, Mooresville, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Cliff Gano, Kewanna Church of Christ. Burial will be at Citizens I.O.O.F. cemetery, Kewanna.

Pall bearers will include three great - nephews, Brian E. Van Duyne of Logansport, Ind., Shane E. Van Duyne of Fort Wayne, Ind., Michael G. Paschen of Rochester, Ind.; personal friends, Larry Stout and Terrell Hoover of Winamac, and Dr. Glenn D. Buell of Kansas City.

Born on May 24, 1906, in DeKalb County, Ill., she was the daughter of William B. Wharton and Tina B. Meyers. She was manager of the Kewanna Garment Factory and retired after 13 years at the Rice Corporation, Winamac, in 1968. Until 1998 a well - known seamstress, she considered alterations her occupation and tie - making her hobby.

On July 24, 1930, she married Rev. Henry F. Bulger, who preceded her in death on July 4, 1959. On Dec. 29, 1965, she married Rev. Meyer A. Madsen, who died on March 1, 1988. She and her husbands served in 25 area Christian churches. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Marion M. Wharton on Feb. 25, 1949, and Harlan A. Wharton on March 26, 1999.

She is survived by two sisters, Esther A. Lake of North Judson, Ind., and Elsie E. Turner of Rochester; and by five nieces, a nephew, and many great - nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kewanna Church of Christ.

Robert E. Mahowald

July 3, 1931 - April 3, 1999

Robert Edward Mahowald, 67, of Plainfield, Ind., died on Saturday, April 3, in Hendrick Community Hospital, Danville, Ind.

Robert was born in Grand Forks, N.D., on July 3, 1931, to Leo Mahowald and Dorothy Dooley.

Robert is survived by his wife, Charlotte C. (Hoffman) Mahowald; a daughter, Suzanne E. Deckard of Plainfield, Ind.; a son, John C. Mahowald of Brownsburg, Ind.; a sister, Doanne Mulvihill; and by four grandchildren and one great - grandchild.

Mr. Mahowald was the president of Mahowald, Inc., vice - president of Leatherfoam, Inc., and was the current president of Mahowald & Associates (management consultant). He was elected and served for the St. Joseph County/South Bend House of Representatives (1964 - 1966); the State Senate (1966 - 1970); and was minority caucus chair. His service in the government includes the Commission on State Tax and Finance Policy, the Transportation Advisory Commission, lay member of the Study Committee on the Legislative Process (1990), and was currently on the Hendricks County Property Assessment Board of Appeals.

He was a graduate of Notre Dame in 1953, and was a member of the Prestwick Golf Club.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 9, at St. Christopher's Catholic Church, 5301 W. 16th Street, Speedway, Ind.

The Conkle Funeral Home, Hendricks County Chapel, Avon, Ind., is handling arrangements.

The family requests no flowers. Contributions may be made in the name of Robert Mahowald to the National Stroke Association, 96 Inverness Drive East, Suite 1, Englewood, CO 80112 - 5112.

Alberta Malone

June 18, 1908 - April 4, 1999

Mrs. Alberta Malone, 90, was born in Forest City, Ark., on June 18, 1908, to the union of the late Joe and Lueilza McCauley. The Lord called one of his precious flowers, Alberta, home on Sunday, April 4, 1999.

On Oct. 9, 1926, in St. Louis, Mo., Alberta married Warren (Jack) Malone. They moved to Mississippi where Jack's family resided. From Mississippi they moved to Chicago, Ill., where they lived for a few years and then. in 1946, settled in South Bend , Ind., because of better job opportunities. Alberta retired from Uniroyal in 1978 after 40 years of service.

Alberta leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory three brothers - in - law, Reverend George (Frances) Malone of Chicago, Emmitt (Lucille) Nichols and Robert (Carolyn) Bougard, both of Byhalia, Miss.; and three sisters - in - law, Ida Bougard, Carrie Malone and Pearl Williams, all of South Bend; along with a host of nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

Preceding her in death along with her husband and parents were a sister, Jeffie McCauley; a brother, Eugene McCauley; and an aunt, Mary Alexander, who raised her as a young girl.

Alberta was a kind and giving person, full of love. Many people who moved to South Bend came to live in their home on Pine Street. During her life, Alberta touched so many lives. Those who have come to know her will never forget her unique personality. To all who had the pleasure of meeting Alberta as a friend, or mere acquaintance, will miss her quick - witted nature and spunky attitude.

Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. today, April 7, at Alford's Mortuary, with visitation occurring one hour prior to services.

Alford's Mortuary is in charge of handling arrangements.

Anthony J. Molnar

March 19, 1914 - April 5, 1999

SOUTH BEND - Anthony J. "Tony" Molnar, 85, of Peach Stone Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 7:01 p.m. on Monday, April 5, in Regency Place of South Bend.

Mr. Molnar retired from both Adams Engineering and Capitol Engineering as a tool & die designer and checker. Previous to that he was employed with Witt Engineering for over 20 years.

He was born to Anton and Gizella (Neher) Molnar on March 19, 1914, in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident.

On Sept. 6, 1941, he married Violet Ladewski in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend. She passed away on March 2, 1989. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and by two brothers, Frank and Leslie Molnar.

He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Ann (Jim) Michalski of South Bend and Mary Jane McCarthy of South Bend; his son - in - law, James R. McCarthy of South Bend; three grandchildren, Kevin M. Michalski and Ann Marie McCarthy, both of South Bend, and Lynn Ann (Bill) Wargo of Elkhart, Ind.; and by a sister, Gazella Molnar of South Bend.

Mr. Molnar belonged to St. Stanislaus Catholic Parish, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #58, St. Joseph Young Men's Society, and was a lifetime member of Elks B P O E #235. He was a 1933 graduate of South Bend Central High School, and was the City of South Bend marble champion in 1928.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Polish Roman Catholic cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, April 7, and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. A parish Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Carrie B. Palka

Dec. 30, 1910 - April 6, 1999

Carrie B. Palka, 88, of West Poland Street, South Bend, Ind., died at 10:53 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6, in Hospice House.

She was born on Dec. 30, 1910, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. She was an employee of the former Enro Shirt Factory and retired in 1961 from the University of Notre Dame. On June 12, 1937, as Carrie Przestwor, she married Howard Palka, who preceded her in death on April 23, 1969. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Gladys Przestwor; and by two brothers, Leo Przestwor and Frank Przestwor.

She is survived by a sister, Joan Przestwor of South Bend.

Mrs. Palka was a member of St. Adalbert Catholic Church, the Harvest House of St. Adalbert Catholic Church, and the Polish Roman Catholic Union.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 4 p.m.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Adalbert Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Joseph cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice House of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.

Betty M. Sargent

Feb. 22, 1922 - April 5, 1999

Betty M. Sargent, 77, of S. Spring Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away after an illness at 11:30 p.m. on Monday, April 5, in the Countryside Place Nursing Home, Mishawaka.

Mrs. Sargent was born on Feb. 22, 1922, in Silver Lake, Ind., as the daughter of the late LeRoy and Elsie (Engle) Lindzy. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Carl Lindzy.

On Aug. 9, 1941, in Mishawaka, as the former Betty Lindzy, she married Donald Sargent, who survives.

She is also survived by two sisters, Joyce Marchant of Mishawaka and Wanda Roth of Edwardsburg, Mich.; and by a brother, Charles Lindzy of South Bend, Ind.

Mrs. Sargent was employed by the Spiegel Store for 20 years, retiring in 1979.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park Mausoleum, Granger, Ind., with Rev. Daniel Motto officiating.

The Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, is handling arrangements.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Sargent may be made to the charity of donor's choice.

Willie J. Smith, Sr.

Aug. 10, 1925 - April 5, 1999

Mr. Willie J. Smith, Sr., 73, of Freemont Street, expired at 5:30 a.m. on Monday, April 5, in Vincor Hospital, Greenfield, Wis. His death followed a brief illness.

He was born on Aug. 10, 1925, in Greenwood, Miss. Mr. Smith's parents, Sam and Jimmie Lee Smith, preceded him in death, as well as three sisters, Mamie Graham, Mary Paul and Bessie Evans, and a brother, Clarence Smith.

In May 1941 he married Mary McKinney, who survives. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife of 52 years, Mary Smith; two sons, Willie J. Smith, Jr., of Michigan City, Ind., and Jimmie Smith of South Bend, Ind.; six grandchildren and 13 great - grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ida Bell Johnson of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country from 1942 to 1948, for which he received an honorable discharge. For many years he was employed at the Bendix Corporation, retiring in 1974.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, followed by burial at Highland cemetery.

The Clark - O'Neal Funeral Home is entrusted with funeral services.
