WARSAW - Mary Robinson, 87, of Miller's Merry Manor, formerly of 527 E. Market, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the nursing home. Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Parks of Warsaw; and three sons, Bill and Gary, both of Warsaw and Larry of Claypool. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in McHatton - Sadler Funeral Chapel - Warsaw Chapel, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Cairine Sewell

July 5, 1962 - Feb. 9, 1999

MEDARYVILLE - Cairine (Fulmer) Sewell, 36, of 11475 W. County Road 100 North, died Tuesday as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident one mile north of Medaryville on U.S. 421. Survivors include her husband, Glenn; a daughter, Jenna Sewell at home; her parents, Audrey and Ray Fulmer of Francesville; a sister, Lisa Brady of Francesville; and a brother, Kevin Fulmer of Medaryville. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pulaski. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today in Querry - Ulbricht Funeral Home, Francesville, where a rosary will be said at 8:30 p.m.

Wayne J. Smith

April 21, 1929 - Feb. 10, 1999

LAPORTE - Wayne J. Smith, 69, of 1009 C. St., died Wednesday in LaPorte Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Diane Marak of Kouts; a son, David of Sun Prairie, Wis.; and two sisters, Jeanne Clark of Hammond, and Wilma Sprouse of Ypsilanti, Mich. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Haverstock Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. until time of services Saturday.

John N. Sneddon

Oct. 14, 1916 - Feb. 10, 1999

MISHAWAKA - John N. Sneddon, 82, of East Fourth Street, died Wednesday in St. Joseph Community Hospital, of natural causes. Survivors include his wife, Grace (Russell); a daughter, Janette Carson of Mishawaka; two sons, Thomas of Osceola and George of Taylors, S.C.; and two brothers, James of Mishawaka and Thomas of Cheshire, England. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Thallemer - Goethals Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Frank P. Stuper

April 6, 1912 - Feb. 9, 1999

LAPORTE - Frank P. Stuper, 86, of 1533 Michigan Ave., died Tuesday in LaPorte Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Albina; a daughter, Bette Eaton of LaPorte; a son, Andrew of Philadelphia; and a sister, Elizabeth Vasaitis of Arlington Heights, Ill. Private family services will be held. There will be no visitation. Haverstock Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Frank A. Swintal

June 13, 1924 - Feb. 10, 1999

SOUTH BEND - Frank A. Swintal, 74, of South Albert Street, died Wednesday in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Swift of Granger; a son, David A. of Indianapolis; and a sister, Patricia Burns of Bradenton, Fla. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Katherine Szobocsan

Nov. 24, 1897 - Feb. 10, 1999

SOUTH BEND - Katherine Szobocsan, 101, of Regency Place, died Wednesday in the nursing home. Survivors include a son, Eugene of Granger. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Zahoran Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 3 p.m.

Cyriel T. Vlaeminck

June 22, 1921 - Feb. 9, 1999

ELKHART - Cyriel T. Vlaeminck, 77, of Mesick, Mich., formerly of Elkhart, died Tuesday in his home of natural causes. Survivors include a son, Tedd of Lake City, Mich.; a sister, Erma Mahlar of Mishawaka; and a brother, Julius of Elkhart. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Palmer Funeral Home, Osceola, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Helen A. Zurawski

Oct. 8, 1917 - Feb. 9, 1999

SOUTH BEND - Helen A. Zurawski, 81, of West Poland Street, died Tuesday in St. Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka. Survivors include a son, James of Alexandria, Va.; and a brother, Casimir Wantuch of South Bend. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Casimir Catholic Church. There will be no visitation. St. Joseph Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Gertrude R. Bednar

Oct. 4, 1917 - March 28, 1999

Gertrude R. (Summers) Bednar, 81, of East Lansing, Mich., formerly of South Bend, Ind., passed away unexpectedly in East Lansing on Sunday, March 28.

Gertrude was born on Oct. 4, 1917, in South Bend, to Dr. Edward J. Summers and Mabel McCombs.

She was wife and partner to John Bednar, who survives her. They celebrated their 55th anniversary in January. Together they raised two loving daughters, Colleen Bednar (Lawrence R., II) Hyslop of East Lansing and Anne Bednar of Ann Arbor, Mich. They were special grandparents to their two grandchildren, Colleen Jara and Emily Kathleen Bednar.

Gert spent most of her life in South Bend. She attended high school at St. Mary's Academy in Notre Dame, Ind. Following her 1939 graduation from Michigan State University she pursued graduate school at the University of Chicago in social work. Her early career in social work drew her to Syracuse, N.Y., and back to Chicago. After raising her family she placed foster and adoptive children for the St. Joseph County Department of Public Welfare until her retirement in 1979. She and John moved to Michigan in 1991 to be close to their grandchildren. They have been residing at Burcham Hills Retirement Community since March 1998.

Gert found special joy in sending cards and letters to friends and relatives and in tracing the family history, but she could be easily distracted to watch birds and squirrels or to try a new restaurant.

Gert is also survived by her sister, Rebecca Ricke, wife of Earl, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Bednar was a former member of Christ the King Catholic Church, South Bend.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. today, March 31, in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Road, East Lansing. The family will receive friends at the church an hour prior to services.

Additional services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, in the Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, where friends may call one hour prior to services in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Highland cemetery.

Those desiring may make contributions in memory of Mrs. Bednar to St. Vincent DePaul; or to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church; the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 14176, Lansing, MI 48901; or to Habitat for Humanity.

Lynde F. Burkhart, Jr.

Nov. 4, 1920 - March 29, 1999

Lynde F. Burkhart, Jr., 78, of Basswood Road, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away after an illness at 10:15 p.m. on Monday, March 29, at St. Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka.

Mr. Burkhart was born on Nov. 4, 1920, in Mishawaka, as the son of the late Lynde and Ruth Burkhart. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Peters and Betty Messina; and by two brothers, Robert Burkhart and Richard Burkhart.

In July 1943 in Roanoke, Va., Mr. Burkhart married the former Florence De Geyter. Mr. Burkhart is survived by his wife Florence of 55 years; two daughters, Cynthia (Michael) Lehner and Cheryl Lane, all of Mishawaka; two sons, Lynde F. Burkhart, III, and Tom D. Burkhart, both of Mishawaka; eight grandchildren and two great - grandchildren; and by a sister, Katherine Goegebeur, also of Mishawaka.

Mr. Burkhart was employed by the United States Post Office in Mishawaka for many years as a letter carrier before retiring in 1983. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy. He was also a member of V.F.W. Post #360 in Mishawaka.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, in the funeral home, with Rev. Elder Miller, pastor of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Mishawaka, officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens cemetery, Osceola, Ind., where military rites will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #360.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Burkhart may be made to the Logan Center, 1235 N. Eddy Street, South Bend, IN 46617; or to the Alzheimer's Association, Northern Indiana Chapter, P.O. Box 4204, South Bend, IN 46634 - 4204.

Mary Chapman

March 27, 1910 - March 30, 1999

Mary "Bernice" (Hummer) Chapman, 89, formerly of 2105 Brady Lane, Lafayette, Ind., died at 9:35 a.m. on Tuesday, March 30, in Heritage Healthcare in Lafayette.

She was born on March 27, 1910, in South Bend, Ind., and had lived in Lafayette since 1951, moving from Goodland, Ind. She graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1927.

She married Garold E. Chapman on April 9, 1931, in Elkhart, Ind. He preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, a son, a granddaughter and three sisters.

She retired in 1975 from J.C. Penney where she had worked in the stock room. She was later a receptionist at the Indiana Pythian Home until 1988. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters Olympia Temple and enjoyed music, sewing and her family.

She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Weiand of South Bend, Janet Neubauer of Miami, Fla., and Loretta Hobson of Lafayette; and a brother, George Hummer of South Bend; and by 16 grandchildren and 32 great - grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Hippensteel Funeral Home, Lafayette, from noon until service time at 1 p.m. on Friday, with Rev. Kenneth Kraft officiating. Interment will be at Tippecanoe Memorial Gardens in West Lafayette, Ind.

Walter J. Deranek

Sept. 15, 1909 - March 29, 1999

Walter J. Deranek, 89, passed away on Monday, March 29, in the home of his daughter - in - law, Jeanette M. Deranek on East LaSalle Avenue in South Bend, Ind.

Mr. Deranek was born on Sept. 15, 1909, to John W. and Anna K. (Szkielka) Deranek in South Bend. He retired from the Torrington Corporation after a lifetime of service.

On Nov. 19, 1932, he married Lucille Robakowski, who preceded him in death in October 1969. He was also preceded in death by a son, Paul T. Deranek on July 3, 1992; and by two brothers, Aloysius and Chester Deranek.

He is survived by a daughter - in - law, Jeanette M. Deranek of South Bend; eight grandchildren, Elaine (Rick) Kimmel, Denise (Russell) Rettig, Rita Deranek, Amy Deranek and David (Karen) Deranek, all of South Bend, Karen (Dennis) Giles, Brenda Deranek and Paulette (Donald) Hoover, all of Mishawaka, Ind.; 11 great - grandchildren, Timothy, Heather, Holly, Dennis, Jason, Evan, Lauren, Chelsea, Kyle, Chloe and Keaton; a sister, Mary Szalay of South Bend; and two brothers, Stanley Deranek of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Henry Deranek of South Bend.

Mr. Deranek was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and was a former Torrington Retiree's Club member.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, South Bend, with burial to follow in St. Joseph cemetery.

Family and friends called from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary was prayed at 5 p.m.

Memorials may be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 415 North Brookfield Street, South Bend, IN 46628.

Paul Guard

Aug. 1, 1918 - March 29, 1999

KOONTZ LAKE - Paul Guard, 80, of 11408 E. Samuel Drive, Koontz Lake, Ind., passed away on Monday, March 29, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, Ind.

Paul was born on Aug. 1, 1918, in Bremen, Ind., to Charles and Ruby (Kimble) Guard, and lived in the area all of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a brother. On Jan. 22, 1940, in South Bend, Ind., he was married to Viola Baker, who also preceded him in death on June 14, 1997.

He is survived by a son, Dennis Guard of Koontz Lake; three sisters, Phyllis Walters of Nappanee, Ind., Marjorie Roeder of Bremen and Lucille Parcell of Arcadia, Fla.; two brothers, Dean Guard of Nappanee and Robert Guard of Arcadia; and by many friends.

Paul was the previous owner - operator of the Koontz Lake Supermarket for 17 years, a former Starke County Commissioner from 1980 through 1988, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Walkerton American Legion, Post #189, and the Knox V.F.W. Post #748.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. (EST) on Friday at the Rannells Funeral Home, Koontz Lake Chapel, with Dr. Donald Lacy officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn cemetery, Walkerton, with military graveside services.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. (EST) on Thursday, and from 9 a.m. until the time of services on Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Walkerton American Legion Building Fund.

Charles Hayes

March 26, 1999

Charles Hayes, 81, of Calle Ramona, Tucson, Ariz., previously of Walkerton, Ind., died after a short illness on Friday, March 25, at St. Mary's Hospice in Tucson.

He was born in 1918, and was retired as a supervisor for Hughes Airport in Tucson.

He is survived by his wife Maxine, married 58 years; a daughter, Penny Thomas; a grandson, David Thomas; a granddaughter, Tahnee Thomas, all of Tucson.

He was a member of the Walkerton Masonic Lodge, and worked as a plant superintendent for the Oliver Corporation, Plant 2, South Bend, Ind., before moving to Tucson in 1956.

Services were held on Tuesday, March 30, in Arizona.

South Lawn Mortuary, Tucson, handled arrangements.

Pauline M. Lavanture

Aug. 30, 1920 - March 27, 1999

Pauline Mae Lavanture, 78, of 1473 Woodstream Drive, Oldsmar, Fla., died at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, in her home.

She was born on Aug. 30, 1920, in Reading, Pa., the daughter of William and Olive Lutz.

She married Robert E. Lavanture on Sept. 19, 1941, in Pottstown, Pa. He survives.

She is also survived by two sons, Richard A. of Elkhart, Ind., and Robert W. of Granger, Ind.; five grandchildren and three great - grandchildren; a brother, Richard Lutz; and by a sister, Mildred Field.

Mrs. Lavanture was a homemaker and helped her husband in the founding and operation of LaVanture Products Company in Elkhart.

Her body was cremated and there will be no calling or funeral service.

Memorials may be made to the Share the Vision Campaign, North Pinellas YMCA, 4550 Village Center Drive, Palm Harbor, FL 34685.
