PLYMOUTH - Donald D. Smith, 83, of 1004 Sycamore St., died at 8 p.m. Friday in his home. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia (Ruffing); six daughters, JoLynn Listenberger, Vivian Bush and Vera Reichard, all of Culver, Vicki Swizek of Granger, Sandra Holcomb of Leiters Ford and Ellen DeWitt of Argos; a son, David of Rochester; a stepdaughter, Doris Hooker of Plymouth; a stepson, David Stayton of Plymouth; and two sisters, Miriam Buss of Bremen and Joan Nicely of Hastings, Mich. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Union Church of the Brethren. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Bonine Funeral Home.

Grigorij I. Birutschenko

Feb. 28, 1925 - July 28, 1998

ELKHART - - Grigorij I. Birutschenko, 73, of Prairie Street, died Tuesday in his home. Survivors include his wife, Johanna (Hennebach); four daughters, Anita Lewallen of Plymouth, Sena Birutschenko of Anchorage, Alaska, and Marta Francis and Sonja Szilagyi, both of South Bend; and two sisters and a brother. There will be no visitation or services. McGann Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Willene L. Bontrager

Jan. 2, 1911 - July 28, 1998

ELKHART - - Willene L. Bontrager, 87, of 1427 Laurel St., died Tuesday in her home. Survivors include three sons, David A. of Elkhart, William D. "Bill" of Hesperus, Colo., and Charles E. of Bremerton, Wash.; and a sister, Dorothy Burkhardt of Minneapolis. Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Rice cemetery. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church, where friends may call after services. Hartzler - Gutermuth - Inman Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Sam Caparell II

Jan. 18, 1951 - July 29, 1998

NILES - - Sam Caparell II, 47, of 2411 S. 16th St., died Wednesday in his home. Survivors include his parents, Frances L. and William H. Medders of Niles; three sisters, Stacey Sarratore and Lynette Hickerson, both of Niles, and Lou Ann Caparell of Cassopolis; and a brother, Jeff Blacketter of Elkhart. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Halbritter Funeral Home, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Mary E. Daumer

Aug. 17, 1915 - July 27, 1998

BREMEN - - Mary Elizabeth Daumer, 82, of Alden Town Manor, Cicero, Ill., formerly of Bremen, died Monday in the nursing home. Survivors include two daughters, Beverly J. Sopiarz of Oak Lawn, Ill., and Eva Marie Witwer of Bremen; and two sons, Robert W. Jr. of South Bend and Rodney Lee of Valparaiso. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Bremen cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today in Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen.

Vivian O. Haines

Dec. 20, 1927 - July 28, 1998

NILES - - Vivian O. Haines, 70, of 3129 Detroit Road, died Tuesday in Elkhart General Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Goens of Niles; a son, Emerson D. Jr. of Niles; two sisters, Wydennia Busby of Jones and Alta Mae Sherman of Wyoming, Mich.; and two brothers, Irving Jeffries of Paw Paw and Harvey A. Jeffries of South Bend. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Connelly Funeral Home, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Robert E. Kennedy

Sept. 5, 1917 - July 28, 1998

NILES - - Robert Emmett Kennedy, 80, of 2648 Lake Shore Drive, died Tuesday in his home. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Jean (Carlson); two daughters, Mary Penberthy of Detroit and Kathleen K. Litvak of Richmond, Calif.; a son, Michael J. of Ann Arbor; a sister, Mary Cahnovsky of Belleville, Ill.; and two brothers, Joseph of Whittier, Calif., and Thomas E. of Niles. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Mark's Catholic Church of Niles. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Delbert W. Lint

Jan. 22, 1948 - July 28, 1998

ELKHART - - Delbert W. Lint, 50, of 919 Baldwin Street, died at 8:31 a.m. Tuesday in his home. Survivors include his mother, Wanda I. Lint of Elkhart; a sister, Lois Skipper of Elkhart; and a brother, Larry W. of Elkhart. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Elkhart Chapel of Stemm - Lawson - Peterson Funeral Home, where friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. today.

Douglas G. Metz Sr.

June 19, 1924 - July 28, 1998

LEESBURG - - Douglas G. Metz, Sr., 74, of Prairie View Health Care Center, Warsaw, formerly of Leesburg, died at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the health - care center. Survivors include a son, Douglas G. Jr. of Leesburg; and a sister, Janice Hartman of San Antonio, Texas. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Eastlund Funeral Home - Mishler Chapel, Milford, where friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and a Masonic service will be at 7:45 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Charles H. Player

Feb. 8, 1942 - July 28, 1998

WHITE PIGEON - - Charles H. Player, 56, of 15941 River St., died Tuesday in the Veterans Affairs Hospital, Battle Creek, Mich. Survivors include his wife, Ola I.; a daughter, Sara O. Barnett of White Pigeon; three sisters, Louise Murphy and Francis Hallman, both of Boston, Ga., and Elizabeth Krontz of Fort Oaks, N.C.; and two brothers, Ira of Ruffin, S.C., and William "Billy" of Orangeburg, S.C. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Farrand Funeral Home. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in White Pigeon Community Church.

Helen Shadle

April 10, 1895 - July 29, 1998

KEWANNA - - Helen Shadle, 103, of Extenda Care, Winamac, formerly of South Street, Kewanna, died Wednesday in the care center. Survivors include a daughter, Helen L. Myers of Albion, Mich. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Harrison - Metzger Funeral Home, Kewanna Chapel, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Friday.

Joseph M. Sherwood

March 18, 1968 - July 28, 1998

LAPORTE - - Joseph Matthew Sherwood, 30, of 405 E. County Road 400 South, died Tuesday in St. Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend. Survivors include his wife, Shelly; his parents, Susan (Kalsow) and James Sherwood of LaPorte; and a brother, William of LaPorte. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. John's Lutheran Church. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday in Cutler Funeral Home and one hour before services in the church.

Rolla Smith

Oct 1, 1917 - July 29, 1998

GROVERTOWN - - Rolla Smith, 80, of 1840 N. County Road 700 East, died Wednesday in Starke Memorial Hospital, Knox. Survivors include his wife, Grace; eight daughters, Thelma Hensley of Argos, Linda Wojciechowski and Bernice S. Smith, both of Knox, Brenda Long of Monterey, Eloise Martin of Hialeah, Fla., Yvonne Daley of Grovertown, Cindy Polsinelli of Merrillville, Tenn., and Gwendalyn Good of Monterey; and five sons, Wilburn of Tippecanoe, Robert of Knox, Howard L. of Spencer, Ind., and Roger L. and Roy D., both of Grovertown. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Rannells Funeral Home, Hamlet Chapel, where friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday and after 9 a.m. Saturday.

Katherine Zelmer

Dec. 4, 1907 - July 28, 1998

EAU CLAIRE - - Katherine Zelmer, 90, of 5318 Hipps Hollow Road, died Tuesday in Lakeland Medical Center - St. Joseph. Survivors include her husband, Herman; five daughters, Betty Eddy of Eau Claire, Barbara Olson of Bear Lake, Mich., Phylis Hauch of Sodus and Ruth Schacknies and Patricia Schmaltz of Berrien Springs; a sister, Emily Clem of Jackson, Mich.; and a brother, Jake Busick of Buchanan. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Berrien Springs. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in Allred Funeral Home, Berrien Springs.

Erwin C. Aranowski

Aug. 5, 1919 - Dec. 31, 1998

Erwin C. Aranowski, 79, of Peashway, died Thursday in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Aranowski was born on Aug. 5, 1919, in South Bend, Ind., to Casimer J. and Nellie (Skarupinski) Aranowski, and was a lifelong area resident. Before his retirement, he was a Certified Public Accountant, and also an instructor at the University of Notre Dame.

Mr. Aranowski is survived by a brother, George (Carolyn) Aranowski of South Bend; a sister, Loretta Chillag of South Bend; five nieces and nephews, Nancy (Mark) Chillag - Mongird of Menlo Park, Calif., Mark (Debbie) Chillag of Coppell, Texas, Jim Aranowski of South Bend, Susan (Judd) Hansen of Long Lake, Ill., and David (Nellie) Aranowski of Granger, Ind.

Preceding Mr. Aranowski in death was a sister, Lucille Coveleski, who died on Nov. 21, 1994.

Mr. Aranowski was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He was a member of the M.R. Falcons and a United States Army veteran of World War II.

Family and friends may call from 2 until 8 p.m. on Sunday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be said at 4 p.m.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Hedwig Catholic Church, 331 S. Scott Street, South Bend, IN 46601.
